How to get to Volendam from Amsterdam. From Amsterdam to Volendam and Marken: planning a trip. A couple of important points

. :) Today is the last part and it is about the suburbs of Amsterdam.
From Amsterdam Central Station you can take bus number 311 to the village of Marken. Previously, it was a fishing village on the island, then a road was built from the south to the island and they wanted to extend it north, to Volendam. For some reason, the whole thing was abandoned, and the island turned out to be a peninsula. Now about 1800 people live in the village.

The bus route looks something like this:

It takes about 40 minutes to go with all the stops, there is free Wi-Fi on the buses. There are few tourists here (especially in comparison with Amsterdam), and in general there are almost no people on the street.

2. When you exit the bus, you will be met by such deserted streets.

3. The area is newer.

4. And older. The interiors of the church are decorated with models of fishing boats (the past of the village affects).

5. Real village atmosphere.

6. Everyone dries clothes outside.

7.

8. Everyone tries to decorate their house the best they can.

9. At first you think that these are some private museums. But no, these are ordinary residential buildings, in an ordinary village.

10.

11. They also have a cafe here.

12. The most "party" place is the pier. It seems like every family in the village has their own boat.

13. There are old wooden houses around the pier. Most are residential. There is one souvenir shop, one house-museum and a cafe with delicious sandwiches. And a separate "tent" with fresh seafood (herring, mmm). :)

14. We buy a one-way ticket for the ferry and sail to Volendam.

15. Hello, Volendam!

Volendam is a city with a population of 22,000 people. Typical Dutch architecture, many cafes, souvenir shops. And a lot of tourists. Everyone gets to Marken mainly by ferry from Volendam.

16. Why tourists rush to Volendam is not clear to me. In the same Marken, it is more interesting and there are practically no tourists.

17. There are a lot of different cafes and restaurants on the waterfront with high prices and mediocre food.

There is nothing more to do in Volendam, so we go to neighboring Edam. You can get here by bus 110 or 118 from Volendam. It takes only 10-15 minutes to drive, as these are neighboring cities. The population of Edam is about 7500 people.

19.

20. Very quiet and nice.

21. There are practically no tourists.

22. On the main street, along the canal, there are several souvenir shops and coffee shops.

23. Strange, humpbacked bridge.

24.

25. Local go in for sports.

26. And they go about their business.

27. Classic, littered houses.

28. In July and August, every Wednesday, a cheese fair is held in one of the squares. We didn't get to it.

29. Mobile lamppost.

30.

On another day, we no longer go to a real village, but to the Zaanse Schans open-air museum. Here are the most famous Dutch windmills. At the Amsterdam station, we take the Sprinter train to the Koog-Zaandijk station (direction Uitgeest) and in 30 minutes we reach almost our destination. It remains only to take a short walk (past the chocolate factory) through the city to the museum itself.

31. I had to wait a bit until the bridge was brought down.

32.

34. Here they are. Mills were brought here from different regions of the Netherlands.

35. All houses are not residential. All this is one huge museum. The houses are old, but they were also brought here specially from different parts of Holland.

36.

37. Many houses can be entered, while some can only be seen from the outside.

38.

39. There is a workshop-shop of the famous Dutch wooden shoes.

40.

41. No sheep anywhere. :)

42. You can go to all the mills (one is free, the rest are for money). In each of them, all sorts of differences are ground for tourists (spices, flour, dyes).

43.

Thank you for reading to the end. I hope it was interesting.

Volendam (Holland) is a fishing village near Amsterdam where you can see how Dutch fishermen lived in the 19th century. Volendam is not an open-air museum, its people live their ordinary lives, giving guests the opportunity to watch it with the hospitality of hospitable hosts. Without a visit to Volendam and the nearby town of Edam and the village of Marken, it will not be complete.

General information

The history of the village of Volendam (Netherlands) is inextricably linked with the nearby city of Edam. Edam has been known since the middle of the 13th century, in 1357 it was given the status of a city, and by the beginning of the 16th century. it became the center of shipbuilding in North Holland. However, after a couple of hundred years, the construction of ships stopped here, and cheese making became predominant in the city's economy. From the middle of the 16th century and until 1922 there were weekly official cheese fairs.

Now Eddam is a small town with a population of about 7,000 people, which, like Volendam, is a landmark of Holland and attracts many tourists. The interest of the guests of the country in these places is not only cognitive, but also gastronomic - many people come to Volendam to taste the freshest Dutch herring, smoked eel and shrimp, and Edam attracts with its famous cheese, which bears the same name as the city.

Initially, Volendam served as the harbor of Edam, but over time, a channel was dug to the Zuiderzee Bay, and the former harbor lost its significance for the city. The fishing and farming settlements that appeared here formed the village of Volendam. Now it is home to about 22,000 people, which is three times more than in Edam. Getting from Amsterdam to Volendam on your own is not at all difficult.

Attractions and entertainment

Volendam itself is a tourist attraction. People come here to feel the spirit of old Holland, to find out how this country lived for many centuries.

Neat village streets with traditional Dutch architecture, windmills, all kinds of fishing boats, from which you can buy freshly caught fish directly - all this will tell about Holland better than any guide. It is enough to see with what love every square decimeter of land is used here to understand how much the inhabitants of Holland value the land, because they have to literally win it back from the sea.

Openness is an important part of the Dutch culture, a tradition that has been preserved since ancient times, when the wives of fishermen who went to sea did not close their windows to show their loyalty to their husbands. Openness allows the residents of Volendam to live and work in peace under the tireless attention of an endless stream of tourists. Many windows in Volendam are not covered with curtains, as they were many centuries ago.

Historical Museum

For those who come to Volendam, there are a wide variety of attractions here. This is a local historical museum with ancient household items and scenes from the life of fishermen of the past, and workshops for the manufacture of wooden shoes, and traditional cheese dairies and confectioneries. The sights also include the Church of St. Vincent, built in the middle of the 19th century.

It also has its own art gallery. For the village of Volendam (Holland), this attraction is of particular importance, because the development of tourism here was due to the artists.

Leendert Spaander

In the late 19th century, the owner of the village inn, Leendert Spaander, began to provide artists with rooms in exchange for their paintings. This attracted many painters to the village, and the local landscapes painted by them spread all over the world, attracting new travelers to these parts.

Every year the fame of this Dutch village grew, and with it the influx of tourists. Among the admirers of Volendam are such famous personalities as Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, Walt Disney, Elizabeth Taylor, etc.

Embankment of Volendam (Marina Volendam)

Judging by the number of tourists, the main attraction of Volendam is its embankment. Most of the tourist flows are concentrated on Marina Volendam, it is always crowded and noisy. A characteristic component of the landscape is numerous yachts, boats, fishing boats moored off the coast.

A typical Volendam building is one-story houses with an attic and a gable tiled roof. The exception is the embankment, where you can see two-story and three-story houses in the style of traditional Dutch architecture. The first floors in all the buildings of the embankment are occupied by numerous shops, cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops.

An interesting feature of the Volendam embankment is that it rises above the village. If you take a photo from the sea, Valendam will be completely hidden by a number of coastal houses. The fact is that the embankment is located on a dam and is located just above sea level, while the rest of the village is located significantly below sea level. If not for the efforts of its inhabitants, then the territory of Volendam would be the seabed.

Traditional entertainment on the embankment is feeding ducks and cormorants, fish for which you can buy here, tasting local fish delicacies, photographing in the national costumes of Holland, boat trips. There are also some sights here - bronze figures of people from the past, hurrying about their business, or sitting down to rest on the benches.

Marken village and Volendam-Marken Express ferry ride

From the embankment of Volendam 8 months a year (from mid-March to mid-November) there is a ferry to the small village of Marken, located on the island of the same name. The ferry to Marken runs every 30-40 minutes, the first departure is at 9.45, the last flight from Marken to Volendam is at 18.00. You can get here in half an hour. The ticket price is €8 one way, or €11.50 round trip.

The village of Marken is small, its population is about 1800 people. Since the 13th century, after the flood, its territory was isolated from the mainland, which led to the emergence of special customs, dialect, costume. In the middle of the 20th century, a dam and a road were built to the island, through which you can get to it by regular bus routes. Fishing used to be the main occupation of the inhabitants, now the main source of income is tourism.

Marken

Marken is interesting for the peculiar architecture of houses on stilts, cleanliness, comfort and well-groomed backyard courtyards. At the service of tourists - many cafes and restaurants with local cuisine, souvenir shops.

Twenty kilometers from the Zaanse Schans is another popular tourist destination - Volendam. Visits to these two villages are combined not only by travel agencies, but also by free travelers. Traveling “Through the Outback of Holland” (that was the name of our excursion), we were transported from the folklore village of windmills to a fishing village.

This is how Volendam is positioned. And you immediately imagine wooden houses standing alone on a cliff with fishing nets hanging around, boats lying on the shore of an unfriendly sea, and an all-consuming fishy smell. The fishing village of Volendam is not like that at all. This is a very well-groomed cozy place where you want to settle down.

Boats, boats and yachts are here, of course.

Maybe it's fishing schooners

I don't know if they are used for catching fish. They are laid up near the shore, and do not cut through the water surface. In general, as for a fishing village, the surrounding water area is too deserted. The only cruise boats were seen connecting Volendam and Marken Island.

Regular boat plying on the route "Volendam - Marken Island"

Marken Island is no less popular with tourists than Volendam, and actually turned into a peninsula after the construction in 1957 of a dam connecting it to the mainland. He gave the name to Lake Markermeer, on the banks of which Volendam is located. Lake Markermeer appeared after the construction of a dam in 1976, dividing the IJsselmeer, which, in turn, arose on the site of the Zuiderzee bay thanks to a dam built in 1932 and separating the bay from the North Sea. Thus, the sea bay became a freshwater lake. The Dutch, as part of this project, wanted to go even further and drain the Markermeer, but stopped in time. Volendam remained a fishing village on the shore of a fresh lake, the water of which we tested for salinity on the left side of the harbor on a small sandy beach.

Salinity was tested here.

In Volendam, like most small coastal settlements, all active life is concentrated on the embankment. Cafes, restaurants, shops, souvenir shops occupied the first floors of pretty houses standing in a row.

Everything to attract tourists. This was a great merit of Leendert Spaander. In 1881 he opened the Spaander Hotel with rooms for artists. Visiting masters were inspired by local landscapes from wooden houses and boats and took away the “corner of Holland” on their canvases as free advertising. Already a few years after the opening of the “hotel for artists”, tourists poured into Volendam who wanted to see the “real Holland” with their own eyes. Often, artists paid for their stay at the Spaander with their work. As a result, now there is a whole collection of paintings. The Spaander Hotel welcomes guests with a list of famous people with the dates of their stay at the hotel. The guests of the hotel were members of royal families, Auguste Renoir, Eleanor Roosevelt, Elizabeth Taylor, Walt Disney, Kirk Douglas, Muhammad Ali and others.

The embankment is crowded and bustling, but one has only to dive into the alley, and you immediately find yourself in Volendam "for the locals." Big fans of such streets, even with extreme time constraints, we could not help but wander there a little. True, we did not meet a single local.

In addition to ducks, I met such a beauty on the embankment. We think it's a heron.

There are several sculptures on the embankment depicting local residents in traditional costumes. Here an elderly man in klomps sat down to rest on a bench.

"Local"

And this is our guide to the Netherlands, Vlad, next to an elderly lady in a high cap.

Our guide in Holland is Vlad (one of the best guides we met on this trip)

Not so long ago, Volendam people called all visitors “coats”. Such a strange nickname appeared because in Volendam all the locals wore a traditional costume and headdress, and visitors wore a coat. Today, traditional clothing has become a rarity.

One and a half hours spent in Volendam flew by quickly. Finally, we went to a supermarket located near the harbor, bought, in addition to every little thing, a package of Heineken beer, which we planned to bring home. The beer changed its physical form along the way and traveled home as a memory of the taste.

From Volendam we returned to Amsterdam, where we still had to look into.

Voledam is one of the favorite places for tourists and locals in the immediate vicinity of Amsterdam. Volendam is positioned as a kind of attraction that introduces the life and way of life of the Dutch fishermen who lived in the old days.

It is absurd to cover a distance of 20 kilometers by plane, although trains also do not go to this area, so you can only get there by car or bus.

By car

Getting there by car is very easy, you just need to leave Amsterdam along the N247 highway and do not miss the turn just before Volendam. The distance from Amsterdam is about 20 kilometers, you can get there in an hour. It is worth remembering that there may be delays due to traffic jams when leaving the city.

The road does not cause difficulties, and it is almost impossible to get lost. Traffic on the highway is quite active, the road is wide, with good asphalt.

By bus

Buses leave from the Amsterdam / CS IJzijde stop, which is located at the Amsterdam Central Bus Station, it is located right behind the Amsterdam Central train station. You can get there on routes No. 110, No. 118, No. 312 and No. 316. Buses operated by a transport company "EBS". The journey will take about half an hour.

The inside is quite simple but comfortable. As for me, comfort in such a trip is not the most important thing, especially since the trip is not far at all.

The other day I already started to tell that we got out on a tour along the route Edam - Volendam - Marken. Pro . And about Volendam and Marken, I decided to tell more applied details: how to get there from Amsterdam and what tickets are better to buy. Just a couple of important points:

1. Your journey will start from bus station Amsterdam/CS IJzijde. It is very easy to find it: it is located right behind the central railway station. Go along the tunnel of the station in the direction opposite to the center. And behind platforms 14 and 15, without leaving the railway station building, take the escalator up. Everything - you are in the right place!

2. Depending on where you decide to go first, you need to take different buses (which is logical). But the numbering of buses this year, for example, is not exactly the same as in the past. In this article I will write bus numbers, relevant for 2016. And I will also give links by which you can double-check the relevance of the information immediately before your trip.

By numbering, in short: bus No. 316 goes to Volendam, No. 315 to Marken, No. 312, 314 and 316 to Edam. I will tell you more about this below. In the meantime, let's deal with the tickets.
