My husband and I decided on the dates of our trip to Vietnam to the island of Phu Quoc from the beginning of December 2016 to January 2017, and having sorted out the visa (you can read about the visa in the article -) we purchased air tickets from Moscow to the large city of Ho Chi Minh City. Therefore, I needed information on how to get from Ho Chi Minh City Airport to Phu Quoc Island (Phu Kok - Phu Quoc, often called that), and found out that you can fly on a domestic flight in literally 1 hour or take a bus to the ferry and then sail along Gulf of Thailand to the island.

Two options for getting to Phu Quoc Island:

  • By plane, air travel will be a little more expensive than traveling by land, but it is more convenient in terms of time, only 1 hour of flight.
  • By land (by bus) and by sea (a little more affordable, but the travel time is 8-10 hours).

Let's consider each of these options and decide what is more convenient and profitable in our case.

By plane to Fukuoka (domestic flight)

Of course, the easiest way to get to the island is by air, namely, take a domestic flight ticket and fly off at the appointed time. After searching, I came to the conclusion that some Asian airlines periodically offer fairly cheap flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc. Let’s look at a few of the main ones:

  • Vietnam Airlines – this airline will be at the top of the list because... Comparing with other carriers, it is she who has quite tempting offers. The main thing is to look for tickets in advance, before the departure date, and buy them on time, because they sell like hot cakes. I was looking for tickets at the beginning of November 2016, so that in a month (approximately at the beginning of December 2016) I could fly from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc. I found a one-way ticket for one person and it cost 569,000 dong (1,650 rubles with all taxes and 20 kg of luggage). However, if you don’t bother buying a ticket in advance, the amount will increase; there are offers for 1,120,000 dong (3,180 rubles with taxes and luggage), as well as for 1,450,000 dong (4,117 rubles) and higher. Zhenya and I flew Vietnam Airlines on December 6, 2016 from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc, read all the details in the article -

I note that when searching for air tickets in any company, the starting price is written less than what I indicated because... They don’t write down all the taxes and fees right away, so you need to look at the total amount so as not to mislead yourself. And also check the information on your luggage, because... sometimes the lowest price may only include the minimum weight of hand luggage, and you will have to pay extra for the rest of the luggage. Below is an example for Jetstar airline . Also, the cheapest ticket of all the airlines listed in the article usually cannot be returned or exchanged for another date. If you haven’t found any good deals, you’ll have to take a ticket from 3000-5000 rubles, and possibly higher for one one way.

In my example for Vietnam Airlines, I indicated the total amount with all taxes and fees in one direction, so as not to get confused. This company flies 6 times a day starting at 6 am and ending at 7:55 pm.

I advise you to search for tickets through well-known search engines, where you can find great deals (compare ticket prices for different dates), for example, through Aviasales, which does not happen with a direct air carrier. Below is a search for tickets through them:

  • Jetstar Pacific– flies 5 times a day and I found the best offer for my date in December 2016 for one person one way for 289,000 dong (830 rubles), but this ticket price only includes 7 kg of hand luggage. Therefore, it is more profitable for me to take a little more for 589,000 dong (1,680 rubles), where 20 kg. luggage included in the price.
  • VietJet Air- they also sometimes have cheap tickets, the main thing is to check how much baggage you can carry, in this airline the minimum cost is usually only 7 kg.

From Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc Island by bus and by boat

Getting from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc Island will have to be done in two stages: first by land by bus and then by water by ferry or speedboat, because... Phu Quoc Island is located in the Gulf of Thailand and is washed by the South China Sea.

Usually this route is chosen by people who are not afraid of an 8-10 hour journey, who are looking for new experiences, because this road can definitely be called a small journey. And also when there is no advantageous offer for a domestic flight from Phu Quoc to Ho Chi Minh City or any other city in Vietnam.

There is another option: you can purchase a package transfer “bus + boat” from a travel agency, although you will have to overpay a little for such a convenient offer. A large number of travel agencies can be found around Pham Ngu Lao Street (Pham Ngu Lao)in Ho Chi Minh City.

If you want to go the whole way on your own, then read on which port is best to get to Phu Quoc Island.

There are two ways to get to the island yourself, namely through different ports from the mainland of Vietnam:

  1. Ho Chi Minh City (bus station Mien Tay Bus Station)- Rach Gia port - Phu Quoc island.
  2. Ho Chi Minh City (bus station Mien Tay Bus Station)– Ha Tien port (Ha Tien) – Phu Quoc island.

1. The most popular way to get to Phu Quoc Island is the first option via the port of Rach Gia (Rach Gia).

a) Where to buy a bus ticket in Ho Chi Minh City to Rach Gia port? First you will need to take a taxi or motorcycle taxi to the bus station in Ho Chi Minh City called Mien Tay Bus Station, Buying a bus ticket there will cost about 160,000 dong (that’s 460 rubles or $7) to the city of Rach Gia. At the bus station, look for a window with the name of the city in Vietnamese, Pach Gia, and purchase a ticket there. Of course, the night bus (slip bus) is convenient, because... the journey to the city of Rach Gia will take about 5-6 hours. There is one stop along the way to have a snack and rest. The slip bus is also convenient because it will come to the city at night, and from early morning you can already buy a ticket and get on a ferry or boat, because They go to the port of Rach Gia only until 13:00 in the afternoon, or rather twice in the morning at 9:00 and at lunch at 13:00.

Tips for purchasing a bus ticket (slip bus) and important points:

  • It’s better to take beds on the 2nd floor (in order to protect yourself from the symptom of “sickness” of passengers traveling nearby). And also, because it’s at the top, you can adjust the air conditioning yourself or open the window.
  • We look for our ticketed bus by comparing the ticket number and the last four digits of the bus number
  • take some water with you, because... it may not be issued everywhere, but it is usually practiced
  • Don’t forget to take something warm from your main luggage, because... Air conditioners in Asia are usually turned on full, there are two options for the air conditioner - cold (on) and heat (off)
  • a pillow and a blanket are usually provided; the blanket will serve as another means to stay warm
  • Don’t be late for boarding and don’t linger at stops, it’s possible that the driver will leave without you and won’t even blink an eye.

b) The bus will go to the city of Rach Gia, or rather to the bus station in this city, however, you still need to get to the port. You can follow the Vietnamese passengers as they head to another bus to the port. Bus companies offer free trips from the bus station to the stop at the pier, but if you haven’t found it or don’t understand something, you can always take a taxi, of which there are plenty, and they will take you to the right place. Perhaps, if you arrived at night and want to spend the night somewhere until 7 am, then you can ask taxi drivers about accommodation, the main thing to remember is an important rule in Asia - bargain.

c) All that remains is to buy tickets for the ferry or speedboat. As I wrote above, at 7 am the ticket office at the port opens and sells tickets for a ferry or other ship for 250,000 dong (720 rubles or $12). Travel time from Rach Gia port to Phu Quoc island takes approximately 2.5 - 3 hours. Just know that the ferry runs twice: in the morning at 9:00 and in the afternoon at 13:00 and that’s it.

However, do not despair if you were unable to purchase a ticket at the ticket office, go to the pier to the controllers who check tickets upon boarding and ask for a free seat. Usually there are ships of several companies docked there, and you can get onto one of them (the price will be from 150,000 – 250,000 dong). Perhaps the place you come across is not the most comfortable, but the view for the traveler will brighten up all the shortcomings.

d) If you board the ferry (ship) through the ticket office, the seats will be comfortable, water will be provided, and there may be a working TV in Vietnamese. Having arrived on the island, you can take a taxi to your booked hotel, the approximate price per person is $4, but remember that you have to bargain. There is information that a bus runs for 20,000 dong (60 rubles), but I can’t confirm or refute this yet.

In Phu Quoc, ferries (boats, speedboats) arrive at the port of Duong Dong or the port of An Thoi.

2.The second way to get to Phu Quoc Island is possible via Ha Tien Port (Ha Tien).

Ha Tien Port is located near the border with Cambodia, less popular, but can be useful if you couldn’t buy it at the bus station Mien Tay Bus Station ticket to the first port of Rach Gia. This means that we also take a ticket to the city of Ha Tien (Ha Tien), here it’s a little longer to travel by bus (8 hours), but at the same time it’s a shorter swim of about 1-1.5 hours to the island.

Total

  • Bus ticket to Rach Gia – 160,000 dong (460 rubles or $7)
  • Ferry ticket (ship) – 250,000 dong (720 rubles or $12)
  • Hotel or taxi and snack (if you need to spend the night somewhere, at least once or as expenses for a taxi and snack) – 230,000 dong (640 rubles or $10)

The total for one person on the land road from Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc is: 1820 rubles (640,000 dong or $29).

And a plane ticket now costs 1,650 rubles. for one one way (without food, but with luggage of 20 kg).

We draw conclusions after this, what do we want to get from an independent trip to the island? If it’s saving money, then it’s a dubious pleasure, but if we consider it as a trip, then have a good trip!

- the largest and most “paradise” in Vietnam. This is of course in quotation marks, because he is still very far from heaven. Everything about Phu Quoc Island 2019, how to get to Phu Quoc, what to see and which hotels in Phu Quoc in Vietnam to choose.

Phu Quoc has not yet been promoted, crowds of package tourists do not come here, there is not much traffic here, and there are not even roads everywhere. Moreover, direct charters have been flying to Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam for only a few years. Mainly from Moscow. And not every day. One of the advantages of Phu Quoc Island is that the roads are far from the coast, so there are hotels right on the seashore.

Fukuoka Map

To navigate around the island, I recommend our proprietary offline map of Fukuoka. It highlights hotels, shops, attractions, exchange rates, and weather. The map plots the route and determines the location without the Internet!

We went with a large group to Phu Quoc island in 2019 for two weeks. Before departure, we thought for a long time about where it would be better for us to go, to Vietnam or Thailand, but we still decided to stop at Vietnam. Because we really wanted to visit the neighboring country of Cambodia, and see the cable car to Pineapple Island (the longest cable car in the world over the sea!). We also wanted to get to know Vietnam, which carries the culture of Western and Eastern civilization.

In general, going to Phu Quoc in the summer is not a good idea. July is the rainiest month of the year. It rains like a wall for 2 weeks in a row. But at the end of August it’s already quite good in Fukuoka; there are several days without any rain at all. But on the western side of Phu Quoc island there are winds and waves. Officially, the rainy season lasts until October.

Phu Quoc Vietnam

Phu Quoc, Vietnam is a former French colony that has been heavily influenced by China and has long and established ties to Russia. I never expected to see our KAMAZ and UAZ trucks in Fukuoka, but there are a lot of them here.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam is located in the southwest of the country on the border with Cambodia. The travel agency assured us that this is one of the best places to holiday in Vietnam, with excellent beaches, hotels in Phu Quoc in Vietnam and a lot of entertainment for a large group.

In fact, everything that the travel agency said turned out to be untrue. Phu Quoc is a village where tourism is just beginning. The beaches are dirty and littered with garbage. If the beach is from the hotel, then of course it is cleaned. There is constant construction all around, you can’t get to the sea everywhere. The roads are half dirt and there is no lighting. But first things first.

Tours to Phu Quoc and Nha Trang

If you want to visit Phu Quoc Island 2019 for 1-2 weeks, then it’s easier to buy a tour. The price includes direct flight, transfer, hotel and insurance. If you travel on your own, then only with a transfer.

Phu Quoc: how to get there

The most convenient way to get to Phu Quoc on your own is to fly on Aeroflot or Vietnam Airlines through Ho Chi Minh City. The flight was quite comfortable and took place on a Boeing 767. The flight time was 9.5 hours, during which we were fed and watered, and we could also keep ourselves busy watching entertainment programs. Upon arrival at Ho Chi Minh City airport, we needed to transfer to local airlines.

Now it’s easier to buy a tour to Phu Quoc, where there will be a direct flight. Such tours are sold by Sanmar and Coral Travel. Therefore, you don’t have to worry about transfers.

Tan Son Nhut Airport in Ho Chi Minh City is located on the outskirts of the city. The most remarkable thing is that there is nothing connecting between the terminals, there are no passages, escalators or monorails. Upon arrival, after receiving a visa, passing through passport control and customs, you will need to cover a distance of almost half a kilometer to the terminal on foot. Fortunately, we only had hand luggage with us and the distance was short. For the future, we realized that we can also get there by taxi, with a landing fee of about $10.

From Ho Chi Minh City to Phu Quoc

Sights of Fukuoka

Vinpearl

Arriving on the island of Phu Quoc Vietnam in 2019, you need to visit one of the main attractions - Vinpearl. It was built literally in 1 year, but it is still being completed. Vinpearl consists of two different parks, one with rides and water slides, the second a safari park. You can buy a ticket separately, for attractions 500,000 dong, for safari 600,000 dong, there is a single ticket for one day for 850,000 dong. Tickets for Vinpearl are sold at all hotels and travel agencies. With this ticket you can take the bus (which goes along the main road towards Vinpearl) and get there for free. Same thing back. But this is only if you have a ticket. We enjoyed our safari in Fukuoka. Part of the park is reserved for a zoo, and part for safari. You need to take a bus (included in the ticket price) that will pass through a savannah with wild animals.

Cable car

The Sun World Ropeway is one of the best attractions in Phu Quoc. The ticket costs 500,000 dong, for this amount you will travel to Pineapple Island and back. The road passes over the sea, with beautiful views from above, as if you were flying low on an airplane. On Pineapple Island you need to take a golf cart (called the “buggy station” and get to the beach). This is all included in the price. There are free sun loungers, chairs, showers and toilets on the beach. There is a cafe with unlimited food (near the beach), it costs 250,000 dong per person. To swim in the sea, you must wear a vest (lifeguards carefully monitor this). When coming to Phu Quoc Island 2019, the cable car and Pineapple Island are a must-see!

Coconut Prison

Coconut Prison is an eerie reality of Fukuoka, once a prison island. Here you will see the cells in which prisoners were kept in inhumane conditions. The coconut prison closes at 17.00, so we didn’t get there the first time (we arrived late). I had to go another time.

Museum of Local Lore

In the southeast of Phu Quoc Island there is a local history museum. You can go there, but it is not necessary. It’s just that if there’s nothing else to do, then you can.

The main attraction of Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam is, of course, its nature, and almost all specimens of local flora and fauna are collected here. Those who want to experience everything in one place on their Fukuoka holiday will find the museum interesting.

Kau Palace

Cau Palace is one of the attractions of Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam; it also has the same name as the Temple of the Lady of the Sea of Vietnam. We got there by taxi, since it is located relatively close to our Phu Quoc hotel in Vietnam, near the Duong Dong embankment.

This palace in Fukuoka serves as a lighthouse and has the status of a temple, and for the most amazing religion in the world - “Cao Dai”. Admirers of this religion recognize famous personalities as saints: Tolstoy, Lenin, Churchill, etc. So, when coming to Phu Quoc Island 2019, you can also pray for our famous ancestors.

What else to see and where to go

On the island of Phu Quoc we went to a rubber plantation, learned how black pepper grows and went to a fishing village, where we were fed a very tasty lunch.

Vietnam has the cheapest diving school, so if anyone has a desire to learn, I advise you to do it here.

We also flew as a group to Hanoi while on vacation in Phu Quoc, where the main attractions of Vietnam are located: the Ho Chi Minh Palace, the Temple of Literature and others. Low-cost airlines and Vietnamese airlines fly there directly from Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. The cost of a round-trip ticket is about $100 per person.

Phu Quoc: review

In conclusion, I would like to note that if you have seen enough beautiful pictures on the Internet, then the real island of Phu Quoc, Vietnam has nothing in common with them. Yes, if you rent a luxury hotel and don’t go beyond it, perhaps... It will be paradise here. But this will not be the real Fukuoka, but just a picture.

If you want to explore Phu Quoc, Vietnam, you will find bad roads, dirt, garbage and constant construction. But this is real Vietnam. This is something worth seeing. Don't expect great service outside the hotel, there simply isn't any. The travel agency won’t tell you this, you understand.

About tips. We argued for a long time with friends, shared our experiences on what was best. Using the example of the then unspoilt places of Thailand, Bali, Goa... People came, left big tips, and the locals decided that the prices were very low and began to raise them. In general, we came to the conclusion that there is no need to leave a tip in Phu Quoc, Vietnam. So as not to spoil or spoil the locals.

Phu Quoc, Vietnam is still a beach holiday. But the locals don’t particularly take care of such beauty. If there is a city nearby, the water will be dirty. If there is a hotel nearby, then everything will be clean and well maintained. The direction of Phu Quoc, Vietnam is actively developing. Huge complexes are now being built on the seashore in all parts of the island. The food in Fukuoka is varied and tasty, lots of seafood, which I adore. But menus often don’t have prices, so tourists pay more for everything.

In Fukuoka, few people speak English, and Russian, of course, too. Therefore, you often need to express yourself on your fingers. Many shops, markets and even cafes do not have prices, which personally does not suit me very much. The price will be shown on a calculator or a banknote will be taken out, but what the cost will be depends on the mood of the seller.

By the way, Russians are treated very well in Fukuoka. But they don’t like the Chinese. The service in our Phu Quoc hotel in Vietnam was at a high level, and in general we liked everything. I recommend Phu Quoc Island 2019, Vietnam for those who have already visited Asia and are not afraid of dirt and garbage.
