What is the name of Hawaiian. Hawaiian male and female names. Our new book "The Energy of Surnames"

The glorious ancestors of the small ukulele are European musical instruments - the bragina from the island of Madeira and the cavanquinho from Portugal.

What does the name of the guitar - "ukulele" mean? The Hawaiian musical "baby" is called differently - ukulele, ukulele, uke. In translation, the name sounds like "a jumping flea" or "a gift that came by itself."

History of the origin of the ukulele

How did this unusual European instrument end up on the exotic Hawaiian Islands? It was like this, in 1879, three comrades from Portugal - José do Esprito Santo, Manuel Nunez, Augusto Diasha - were delivered to the port on the island of Oahu - Honolulu by the capacious ship "Ravenskrag".

It is clear that at first, far from their homeland, men settled in a new place - they were looking for suitable housing and ways to earn money. And they found a suitable "niche" in the music sales market for themselves - they put an instrument on sale to the local population, which was estimated at some 75 cents.

When the King of Hawaii David Kalakaua found out about the existence of the ukulele, he immediately included the guitar in the instrumental staff of his orchestra. Such a decision could not but affect the popularity of uke.

Especially "loud" was the tour in 1915 of the Royal Quartet to the Pacific-Panama International Exhibition in San Francisco. Since that glorious time, the small guitar has been directly associated with Hawaiian music.

But, despite the compact size of the ukulele, its unusual sound, it is not very popular in Russia. There is a lack of special teaching aids. But with a strong desire, you can quite find useful articles on the Internet that are devoted to a small Hawaiian instrument and playing it.

Types of ukulele

But the growing popularity of the ukulele could not be compared with the "loud" guitar, which "showed" itself in all its glory during the performance of rock and roll. Although in jazz there was a place for uke.

The mass production of the ukulele became possible due to the increased demand for this small instrument with an interesting sound. But the period of 1960-80 cannot be called commercially successful - only ten years later the guitar again took a "favorable" position among the variety of stringed instruments.

According to a long tradition in the manufacture of ukuleles, the same types of wood are used that go to the production of guitars. But today you can find a ukulele made of plastic. This option has a lower cost, and it has a different sound.

From this common truth it follows that the price of the Hawaiian "baby" depends on the material from which it will be made. It is clear that laminate boards will cost less than a solid piece of wood from trees such as ash, rosewood, maple, mahogany, agatis, spruce, walnut, acacia.

The shape of the tool can be different - classic, round, triangular, square or in the shape of an oblong "pineapple". The fantasy of the masters simply knows no bounds, so they are prone to experimentation. It is better to use strings from nylon material - this will make the sound deeper and more interesting.

The Hawaiian miniature instrument has 4 strings (although there are 8-string uke with twin strings), its most common length is 53 cm.

What are ukuleles?

  • soprano - the most famous and widespread;
  • concert ukulele - an instrument reaching a length of 58 cm;
  • The tenor is a guitar that appeared in the heyday of the 20th century. Its length is 66 cm;
  • baritone - a fairly large uke, about 76 cm long;
  • bass - modern ukulele, 76 cm.

Ukulele in cinema

Another indicator of the popularity of the ukulele is seen in the movies. For example, the ukulele can be seen in the hands of the main character - Darling (the incomparable Marilyn Monroe) in the film "Only Girls in Jazz". In the famous TV series "House Doctor" - gloomy Gregory also plays on the "baby".

But in the literature there is also a noticeable trace of uke - in the unforgettable work of I. Ilf and E. Petrov, the novel by the famous foreign writer Jack London - "Moon Valley".

The state capital is Honolulu. A modern high-rise city lies on the southern coast of Oahu. Long white seashores and blue waters of the ocean are the best for swimming and sunbathing; surfers trust themselves to the waves on the northern coast of the island. And in the resort town of Waikiki Beach, nightlife is seething.

The island of Hawaii is known locally as the "big island" because of its size and not to be confused with the name of the state. The most remarkable thing here is the volcanoes, especially the active Kilauea. The island has wonderful beaches and many sports grounds, Lahaina, the old capital of the Hawaiian kingdom, is also located here. You should definitely visit the dormant Haleakala volcano with a height of 3000 m.

To the north, the islands of Molokai and Lanai are perfect for those looking for a relaxing getaway where you can hike, mule or cross-country in a jeep. Kauai or Garden Island is a real tropical paradise, whose rivers and waterfalls will appeal to lovers of fishing.

Panorama of Honolulu

Geography of the Hawaiian Islands

The archipelago includes 8 large islands, as well as many small islets and atolls. The islands are located in the northern part of the Pacific Ocean, between 19° and 29° north latitude. Hawaii is elongated from northwest to southeast and covers an area of 16,636 km². The total length of the Hawaiian Islands is 2400 km. Their isolated position, lost in the ocean, explains why Europeans discovered them so late - only in the 18th century.

Hawaiian Islands from space

History of Hawaii

According to the most reliable sources, the ancestors of modern Hawaiians sailed from Tahiti around the 12th century. The Tahitians sailed thousands of miles back and forth across the ocean in double canoes. Ancient Hawaiian society was ruled by chiefs, matriarchy reigned there, and religion followed strict laws called kapu. The Tahitians drove out the natives, and the alien priest appointed his own king. The following centuries passed in constant civil strife: the islands either united in alliances, or left them. The ethnic type and customs of modern islanders testify to the Polynesian origin.

Drawing depicting the settlement of the inhabitants of the islands before the arrival of Europeans

Europeans in Hawaii

The Hawaiian Islands were discovered by James Cook in 1778 during a trip around the world. Here he died in a conflict with the natives - he tried to curb their unhealthy desire from the point of view of the Europeans to take things from the whites without asking and faced resistance. Before his tragic death, he managed to give the islands a name - Sandwich. Only one thing connects them with the popular fast food sandwich - the origin of the term from a noble English family. The Earl of Sandwich, after whom the islands were originally named, was in charge of the maritime affairs of Great Britain. The modern name of the entire archipelago came from the name of the largest island - Hawaii.

In the early 1790s, King Kamehameha, chief of the Big Island, conquered and unified the Hawaiian Islands. He is famous for bringing peace and stability to a society that was constantly plagued by civil strife and wars for the power of the privileged classes. After Kamehameha's death in 1819, his son Liholiho succeeded to the throne.

Christian missionaries arrived on the island a little later, and in the midst of the Hawaiian social and spiritual chaos began to "save their souls." Also, whalers from New England sailed to the island, looking for alternative sources for fishing. And by 1840, Lahaina and Honolulu had become the most famous whaling towns on the Pacific coast. Meanwhile, foreigners set to work on the Hawaiian fertile lands, establishing cane plantations in the local wide expanses. Needing manpower, they called in immigrants from Asia and Europe. This uplifted Hawaiian multi-ethnic culture, but it also left many natives landless.

American History of Hawaii

Until 1893, Hawaii was safely ruled by the local royal dynasty, but 5 years after the overthrow of the monarch, the territory left without a master was annexed by the United States. The US government was reluctant to support the coup d'état, but soon realized that the colonization of the islands could be an important strategic move, and Hawaii was annexed to American territory in 1898. The infamous surprise attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 in the Hawaiian Islands brought the United States into World War II. The island became a full-fledged, 50th state in 1959. Since then, Hawaii has periodically attempted to secede from the US, but more in the fantasies of some political activists than in earnest.

Russian Hawaii

Our compatriots also took part in the development of the Hawaiian Islands. Captain Yuri Lisyansky at the beginning of the 19th century circumnavigated the world with Krusenstern, and one of the small islands was named after him. Then, as in our time, it was uninhabited, practically devoid of vegetation, the entire space was occupied by nesting seabirds and rookeries of monk seals. After returning to his homeland, the traveler published a memoir describing Hawaii, which was also popular in Europe.

Largest islands

Tourists prefer to stay on the six Hawaiian Islands, each of which has its own characteristics: a developed infrastructure or, on the contrary, the absence of noisy entertainment and pristine nature. These are volcanic Hawaii, which gave its name to the archipelago, metropolitan Oahu, calm Molokai, fashionable Maui, Kauai covered with exotic plants and the dream of Lanai divers.

The largest island not only of the archipelago and of the entire United States is often referred to simply as the Big Island, so as not to cause linguistic confusion. At its widest point, it reaches 150 km, but this is not the limit yet: active volcanoes over the past 30 years have added a couple of hundred hectares to the island. The highest mountain in the world is also located here, if you count not from the surface of the earth, but from the base hidden deep under water. Hawaiian Mauna Kea surpasses Everest in this case by almost 1.5 km. In total, there are 5 large volcanoes on the island, both extinct and dormant, and active. In the future, in about 100 thousand years, another underwater volcano will emerge to the southeast of the island. The neighborhood with volcanoes does not in the least interfere with the development of infrastructure: public buses and taxis run along decent roads, and a car rental service operates at Hilo and Kona international airports. Marine vessels call at the ports of Hilo and Kawaie, cruise ships prefer Kailua-Kona.

In the southeast of the island of Hawaii is the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, which is one of the few places on the planet where it is relatively safe to observe volcanic eruptions. Since 1983, the low, reaching 1247 meters, Kilauea has been continuously active here. True, its height is relative - several more kilometers are hidden under water. The lava flows straight into the ocean: a thrilling sight opens up to the eyes of tourists when a bright red stream explodes clouds of steam and instantly cools in the water. A 3-kilometer-long caldera basin stretches around the volcano, on the slopes of which the Halemaumau crater is located - a real lava lake, where the goddess Pele, the patroness of fire and eruptions, lives. Sulfur fumes and acid rains burn everything around, at some distance from the craters the barren desert turns into a Garden of Eden. Guided tours began here in the middle of the XIX century. The national park was created in 1916, since 1987 the object has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. For the safety of tourists, to the east of Kilauea, at a distance of less than 2 km, an observation deck is equipped, from where both ash and lava are perfectly visible.

Of the man-made attractions of the park, the museum of Thomas Jaggar, a famous volcanologist, the first director of the nearby observatory, which, unfortunately, is closed to tourists, deserves attention. The museum presents interactive expositions dedicated to the nature of the island. Nearby, the historic hotel "House of the Volcano", built in the 70s of the XIX century, is almost restored. Now it is used as a souvenir shop, a hotel and a restaurant with renovations still unfinished. The main advantage of the hotel is a great view of the volcano, although due to gas emissions from time to time it is necessary to evacuate guests.

Another volcano over 4 km high, Mauna Loa, lies less than 30 km west of Kilauea. It is considered quite dangerous, although the last destructive eruption occurred more than 60 years ago. For the convenience of tourists, a new route has been laid along its gentle slope. The Mauna Kea volcano lying to the north is the official recreation area of the islanders. Hunting for wild goats and pheasants is allowed here. Due to the high altitude, tourists will need remarkable physical fitness, so only lovers of difficult hiking routes climb here. In January-February, they go skiing, although no special conditions have been created for this. Lying in the west of the island, the 2.5-kilometer Hualalai has been dormant for more than 200 years. It has as many as 6 craters, which are easy to climb, but this is prohibited by the owners of the surrounding land. Particularly persistent tourists, however, slip up at their own peril and risk. Finally, in the north lies Kohala, extinct 60 thousand years ago, stretching 35 km in length. There are excellent beaches nearby, including the white-sand bay of Kaunaoa. Although an expensive hotel was built near it, everyone is allowed on the beach.

Volcano Hualalai

The southernmost point of the States is Ka Lae, a rocky precipitous coast. To the north of it, the nature of the island is much friendlier. To admire the tropical vegetation, you do not need to delve into the jungle. In the Hawaiian Botanical Garden with a rich collection of palm trees, hiking trails are laid, graceful bridges are thrown across the streams. In the garden you can see several small waterfalls, the more serious one, 129-meter Akaka, is located 18 km north of the city of Hilo. The house of the royal family, built for the governor in the first half of the 19th century, was later transferred to the Hawaiian dynasty. Now a modest two-story house with carved railings has been turned into a museum with historical furniture and artifacts.

Oahu

The state capital, Honolulu, is located on the third largest island in the archipelago, Oahu. Near the suburbs of the capital, Waikiki, and all major hotels are arranged. The advantages of resting here are obvious: the airport is nearby, many shops, restaurants and entertainment centers, excellent roads. There are also a lot of people, but you can find a relatively inexpensive hotel. Living on the more remote islands is more expensive. There is always enough space on the beaches, because the main one is 3 km long.

For tourists, they organize sightseeing tours on ships, evenings with Hawaiian dances. The most interesting trip is to Pearl Harbor. Although this is an active American military base, a separate area has been allocated for tourists that can be visited. A nice bonus is a trip to the sunken battleship. The entire base can be viewed from above by helicopter. Half an hour of air walks cost from $200. Popular and trips to the center of Honolulu. The city does not shine with architectural sights, but local buildings seem exotic to continental guests. In the northern part of the island there is a nature reserve where organized excursions lead.

Molokai Island

The island seems to be specially designed for lovers of silence. Sandy beaches, including the longest in Hawaii, a minimum of cars. The ruins of ancient structures have been preserved on Molokai. It is most convenient to move around the island by bicycles, and the popular village of Kalaupapa is reached along a picturesque mule trail. Once upon a time, patients with leprosy were settled here. Today's tourists have nothing to fear - it was a long time ago, besides, leprosy is not contagious.

Maui island

This island is a cross between Molokai and Oahu: there is more civilization here, but not annoyingly much, as in the vicinity of Honolulu. The southeastern part is the most fashionable, here the highest quality service and appropriate prices. In the vicinity of Wailea, all opportunities for surfing and diving open up. There is only one volcano on Maui, Haleakala, but it is high - three kilometers. Making ascents and bypassing one climatic zone after another, you can even freeze, so tourists take windbreakers with them. In winter, whales gather off the coast, but to see them well, you need to go out to sea on a boat.

Kauai Island

It is best to observe tropical plants in all their diversity on the island of Kauai. It's one of the few parts of Hawaii where there are hints of seasonality - it's often rainy in autumn and winter. There are almost no roads on Kauai, but you can roam freely on foot without fear of poisonous snakes. There is neither modern entertainment nor national exoticism here. The entire island is a continuous reserve with a giant Waimea canyon, second in size only to Colorado.

Lanai Island

The quietest island, a former pineapple plantation with a single village, was chosen by divers. The dive sites around Lanai are some of the best in the world. The relief of the island allows you to travel by jeep. Those who do not dive hunt ungulates, swim, watch dolphins.

Active recreation in the Hawaiian Islands

Hawaii is the top of an underwater ridge, there are many sea mountains around that do not protrude to the surface, which is why the conditions for diving on the islands are simply ideal. You can go snorkeling in the Molokini crater. Legendary surfing, whose homeland is considered to be the Hawaiian Islands, has long been a real means of transportation and part of public rituals. Later, it turned into extreme entertainment, which at the beginning of the 20th century was also ventured by the guests of the islands. On every decent beach you can find an instructor and rent equipment. For beginners, waves in the Waikiki area are optimal. If the courage for an independent swim is not enough, you can take part in a sea canoe trip as a passenger. In addition to surfing, horseback riding, mountaineering, and hiking flourish in the Hawaiian Islands. Of the expensive active entertainment, diving in a submarine and helicopter travel are highly valued.

Population of Hawaii

The blessed climate and the development of tourism have allowed the native Hawaiians to adhere to the traditional way of life. True, they have long been a minority of the population. Less than 10% of Hawaiians identify as Indigenous.

Unlike the continental US, Hawaii could easily be a different country. In fact, some native Hawaiians would like to regain the status of an independent nation. In terms of both geography and culture, Hawaii was formed in isolation, and both the flora and fauna of the islands are unique.

This is not to say that any ethnic group is dominant, and this racial diversity is also different from American multiculturalism. Hawaii has a large Asian community and tiny African American and Hispanic communities.

local culture

Hawaiians are happy to participate in folklore ensembles that dance the popular local hula dance, demonstrate a high class in surfing, and teach tourists their art. No one worships many gods anymore, but colorful Hawaiian legends have been preserved from former polytheism, which the indigenous inhabitants of the islands will gladly tell guests. Another popular Hawaiian pastime is performing folk songs accompanied by a ukulele, or miniature guitar, not that ancient. In fact, these are continental American songs reworked a century ago, seasoned with local flavor.

As befits a tropical paradise island, Hawaii is absolutely calm. Except for cosmopolitan Honolulu aloha shirts and sandals (ruba-slippa) suitable for any occasion and event, whether it be family gatherings or fun and outdoor activities with friends. Caring for the islands and the community is a must.

And then there is the aloha... aloooohah, to be exact! - as they would say in luau (local holiday). This is, of course, a greeting, but more than a greeting. It expresses good manners, the daily practice of openness, hospitality and goodwill, and applies to everyone, both locals and tourists.

Language

Hawaii has two official languages, English and Hawaiian, and one unofficial language, Pidgin. Hawaiian has undergone a resurgence, but still, except in official institutions (schools, performances) difficult to hear it in everyday life. All residents speak English, but when the locals "tell a story" to each other, they can switch to a relaxed, ironic pidgin. The pidgin was invented on the sugar plantations as a common dialect for various foreign workers.

Between surfing and sunbathing on the beaches of Waikiki, you can visit the museums of Honolulu and stroll through the city's Chinatown, climb to the top of Diamond Head and snorkel in Hanauama Bay. In winter, you can admire the giant waves on the North Coast.

Information for tourists

Holidays in Hawaii are expensive even for Americans - flights are too expensive, and hotels do not hesitate to set higher rates. Budget hotels outside entertainment centers will be more affordable. We recommend using the Booking.com service, where you can book a hotel room, apartment or villa with discounts up to 60%.

Weather in Hawaii

Unlike many tropical resorts, the Hawaiian Islands do not have a pronounced dry and wet period. From the end of autumn to the beginning of spring, there is more precipitation than in summer, but there are no prolonged rains for many days. The climate is ideal for year-round recreation. It is hot in summer, the temperature is about +30 °C, there is a danger of hurricanes. In winter, it is rarely below +18 ° C on the coast, snow is possible in the mountains.

When to go

  • December-April. Somewhat cooler than usual, humidity high in winter. peak tourist season. At this time in Hawaii they go surfing and whale watching.
  • May-September. Mostly sunny weather, cloudless days and huge crowds of families who came for the summer holidays.
  • October November. Extremely hot and humid times of the year, but fewer tourists means more affordable accommodation.

How to get to Hawaii

Hawaii is an expensive holiday destination primarily due to its remoteness from the continent. The nearest section of the mainland is located 3000 km from the islands. There are no direct flights from Russia to Honolulu. A flight with transfers through Asian countries or the USA will take more than a day. Another option is to get to the Hawaiian Islands on cruise ships.

What to buy in Hawaii

The Big Island once produced sugarcane, but the last plantation was closed 20 years ago. Nuts, papaya, some coffee, orchids are grown for export. Basically, all the efforts of local producers are aimed at tourists. An abundance of souvenirs, colorful fabrics, authentic tiny guitars - it is best to buy this in Honolulu and the surrounding area.

What to try

For many centuries, the main protein food of the islanders was fish, meat got on the table much less often. In addition, there were gender taboos: women, for example, could not eat bananas and pork. The local analogue of potatoes, taro, is widely used in second courses and for baking. Tourists will enjoy dishes from freshly caught fish and colorful cocktails with exotic names.

Time in Hawaii

Honolulu's time zone is UTC-10:00 or HST. Time in the Hawaiian Islands is 13 hours behind Moscow time.

Security questions

Tsunamis are observed in the northern regions, hurricanes occur in summer and autumn, but they do not cause much harm to the islands that protrude from the water. Due to the peculiarities of geology, the echoes of earthquakes in Alaska and Chile reach here. The last major event of this kind was the Japanese cataclysm of 2011. Then the tremors that reached the Hawaiian Islands caused great material damage, but there were no human casualties. Volcanic gases sometimes spread over the Big Island. It is not fatal, but harmful to people with asthma and allergies. Poisoning by symptoms resembles a breakdown with the flu. The political movement for the independence of Hawaii does exist, but tourists are unlikely to know about it: the main protests are taking place on the mainland.

Attention!

Sites and blogs have appeared on the Internet that are not our official sites, but use our name. Be careful. Fraudsters use our name, our email addresses for their mailing lists, information from our books and our websites. Using our name, they drag people into various magical forums and deceive (give advice and recommendations that can harm, or lure out money for magical rituals, making amulets and teaching magic).

On our sites, we do not provide links to magical forums or sites of magical healers. We do not participate in any forums. We do not give consultations by phone, we do not have time for this.

Note! We are not engaged in healing and magic, we do not make or sell talismans and amulets. We do not engage in magical and healing practices at all, we have not offered and do not offer such services.

The only direction of our work is correspondence consultations in writing, training through an esoteric club and writing books.

Sometimes people write to us that on some sites they saw information that we allegedly deceived someone - they took money for healing sessions or making amulets. We officially declare that this is slander, not true. In all our lives, we have never deceived anyone. On the pages of our site, in the materials of the club, we always write that you need to be an honest decent person. For us, an honest name is not an empty phrase.

People who write slander about us are guided by the basest motives - envy, greed, they have black souls. The time has come when slander pays well. Now many are ready to sell their homeland for three kopecks, and it is even easier to engage in slandering decent people. People who write slander do not understand that they are seriously worsening their karma, worsening their fate and the fate of their loved ones. It is pointless to talk with such people about conscience, about faith in God. They do not believe in God, because a believer will never make a deal with his conscience, he will never engage in deceit, slander, and fraud.

There are a lot of scammers, pseudo-magicians, charlatans, envious people, people without conscience and honor, hungry for money. The police and other regulatory agencies are not yet able to cope with the increasing influx of "Cheat for profit" insanity.

So please be careful!

Sincerely, Oleg and Valentina Svetovid

Etymology

The name of the state Hawaii"(eng. Hawaii) comes from the largest island of the Hawaiian Islands - the island of Hawaii. There are several versions about the etymology of the name of the island. According to one of them, the island is named after Hawaiiloa, a character in Hawaiian myth who discovered the island when they were first settled. According to another version, insulonym comes from the name of the legendary ancestral home of the Polynesians Hawaii.

State spelling controversy

In 1978, when the Hawaiian language was proclaimed a second official language in the Constitution of the State of Hawaii, questions arose about the correct spelling of the state's name. The name of the state constitution in English looks like English. The Constitution of the State of Hawaii, and the name of the state, according to Article XV, Section 1 of the Constitution - English. The State of Hawaii. The English spellings of the name did not use diacritics, because the previous version of the constitution, drafted in 1949, did not use ocean("") and macron, used in modern Hawaiian orthography. The exact spelling of the state name in Hawaiian is Hawaiʻi. In Hawaii Admission Act 1959, which established the official status of the state, the federal government recognized the English version as the official name of the state - Hawaii. All official government documents, job titles, and the seal of Hawaii have used the traditional spelling of the state's name without diacritics. On the other hand, the State Park Service, the University of Hawaii, and some private companies use diacritical characters in the state name. At the same time, since the adoption of the US Constitution in 1789, there has not been a single precedent for changing the name of the state. Only in 1780 Massachusetts state constitution officially changed the name of the "Province of Massachusetts Bay" (eng. Province of massachusetts bay) to "Commonwealth of Massachusetts" (eng. Commonwealth of Massachusetts), and in 1819 the Territory of Arkanso (eng. Territory of Arkansaw), which was admitted to the Union as the state of Arkansas (Eng. State of Arkansas) in 1836.

Story

The islands were first settled by Polynesians in the III-IV centuries. For Europeans, the islands were discovered by the English captain James Cook in 1778, who named them the Sandwich Islands. Europeans found several state entities on the Hawaiian Islands, which at the beginning of the 19th century merged into a single Kingdom of Hawaii. The development of interest in the production of sugar cane led the United States at the end of the century to more active economic and political influence on the affairs of the archipelago. The local population, faced with infections brought from outside, to which it had no immunity, died out: by the end of the century, about 30 thousand people remained from the 300,000th Polynesian population.

Main industries: sugar and fruit-canning.
