The most popular city in China among foreigners, without a doubt, its capital is the grandiose expansion of Beijing with its seven (and according to some sources - eight) ring roads. How did you get to China and Yiwu? What are you doing here?

The first time I came here was in 2006 with a classmate after an internship at Shandong University. At that time little was known about this city. But my friend had been here before, so I knew roughly that the city is wholesale, based solely on the export of consumer goods. I am currently in the process of purchasing. I work for a Moscow company, we ship toys, household and sporting goods, we produce underwear under our own brand.

What is Yiwu famous for and why is it special? Why is it worth living here?

I must say right away that living here is not easy in the sense that foreigners live in Shanghai, Beijing and other large cities. There are very few places for leisure. The main purpose of life here is to earn money. The main attraction of the city is the largest wholesale market of consumer goods Futien Note. Ed.). The market stretched into five sectors, each with five floors. People from all over the world come here. There are also large wholesale markets for clothing, food and production materials.

What neighboring cities or areas do you visit?

I travel a lot in China on business trips. But for recreation I prefer Hangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong.

Which foreigners live in Yiwu and what do they do? Is there a community?

Businessmen from the Middle East and Central Asia are the main contingent here. They have their own kindergartens and schools. There is a mosque in the city. There are also a large number of restaurants and cafes, where Oriental cuisine is widely represented. There are many Russian speakers in the city who work here, study or just spend time. There are many communities of Arabs and Indians.

What are the gastronomic specialties of Yiwu?

Oriental cuisine is represented most widely here. There are a small number of restaurants with European and Caucasian cuisines.

Do you have Chinese friends? How do you spend your time?

There are no Chinese friends. Basically, communication is limited to work.

Would you like to leave Yiwu? Where and why?

I'm not considering leaving at the moment. Since there are a large number of plans and projects, the implementation of which requires personal presence.

What are the main difficulties foreigners face in Yiwu?

To be honest, I don't see any problems. It might just be a language barrier. For a very long time I got used to the southern pronunciation, because before that, at the universities of Russia and China, we were taught only in the northern dialect.

I would probably advise students to come here after graduation. Language practice and practice related to foreign economic activity, they can get here in full in a very short period of time. All this will help them in their future life and work in China.

Who shouldn't go to Yiwu?

Lazy people have no place here, that's for sure. The basic principle of life here - as you stomp, you will burst.

Yiwu airport

Bus stations

Yiwu is one of the largest transportation hubs in the area. There are two intercity bus stations in the city. Binwang Bus Station (义乌宾王客运中心) runs buses to cities located in Zhejiang province for short distances, while Yiwu Bus Station (义乌长途汽车) runs buses to other provinces and long distances.

Just a few hours by train from Shanghai in Zhejiang province is the world's largest market city - Yiwu. It is also called CCC (China Commodity City). Yiwu, like many other cities in China, over the past decades has turned from a village into a huge center of trade, where small and medium-sized businesses are concentrated. In 2016, the city's GDP was 111 billion yuan ($16.8 billion).

Yiwu's success is remarkable, of course, but will the market be able to withstand the increasing competition from other low-cost foreign manufacturers such as Vietnam or Bangladesh?

History of Yiwu

Yiwu is located too far from the sea to develop as a port, in addition, the city is located in an area almost unsuitable for agriculture, and there are no minerals here. Its development was entirely dependent on domestic and international trade. And proximity to Shanghai and Hangzhou added advantages in terms of logistics.

The growth of Yiwu trade began in the late 70s, when the first local businessmen began to expand their trade relations with more developed cities. The famous Chinese (connections) were especially strong in Yiwu, whereby there was a rapid exchange of business information and contacts. It was this that became one of the main driving forces for the development of the market city, given the relatively poor support of the industrial sector.

Yiwu is one of those Chinese cities that showcase the success of Deng Xiaoping's reforms that began in 1978. The new pricing system and permission to engage in private enterprise allowed the local tertiary sector of the economy to develop rapidly.

The decentralization of state control over trade in certain areas led to the fact that in 1982 the Yiwu authorities launched China's first free market. Since then, its turnover has continued to grow relentlessly.

At the moment, Yiwu has grown from a simple wholesale market into a whole cluster, which is considered the national economy of the country, and its population is 1.2 million people. It has consistently won government awards for its rapid development and exemplary management. In 2005, Yiwu was named the world's largest light industry market in a joint report by the World Bank, the United Nations and Morgan Stanley.

Goods and buyers

Heavy industry and high-tech industries are located in areas around Shanghai, Guangzhou and Beijing. In turn, Yiwu specializes in the production and trade of light industry goods. From key chains and toys to cosmetics and jewelry - more than 300 thousand different items of goods.

Yiwu is an international trade center, with more than 200,000 buyers arriving every day to buy products covering 40 industries and 2,000 industry categories. In total, more than 70 thousand points of sale: from small pavilions to the largest shopping centers. Every year, the third largest exhibition in China, the International Commodities Fair, is held here, which is very popular, and exhibitors book seats a year in advance.

Although most of Yiwu's exports are to the United States, the city has extensive trade links with almost every country in the world. Now the emerging markets of Africa and the Middle East are taking the lead.

Closest competitors

Despite the astounding success of Yiwu's economy, there are now some doubts about its bright future. The conditions that led to its rapid growth are gradually weakening. Rising overhead costs are forcing buyers to consider alternative options for locating production in countries neighboring China.

With many infrastructural problems, the so-called group of "powerful five" countries (MITI-V: Malaysia, India, Thailand, Indonesia and Vietnam) nevertheless offer a viable alternative to China's rising labor force in price. But for many companies, this option is still unacceptable.

The low cost of labor and raw materials in China's neighbors does not always outweigh their other shortcomings. Developed manufacturing infrastructure, 30 years of experience in international trade, technology and production efficiency, legal aspects, as well as cheap and convenient logistics - all this will keep China afloat for many years to come. However, this applies to heavy industry, mechanical engineering and high technology industries.

Light industry will eventually partially move to other countries. For this reason, in order to survive, Yiwu needs to transform its economy over time, relying not on the sale of cheap small goods, but on quality, high-class service and a developed logistics system. Then Yiwu will be able to strengthen its status as an international exhibition and trade center.

Story

20 years ago, Yiwu City was an unknown town with a population of about 600,000 people whose main occupation was agriculture. Nowadays, the city has become a rapidly developing center of international medium and small wholesale trade, here is the world's largest wholesale market (Futien) of consumer goods, which is the center of business development for many businessmen from all over the world.

Key trade objects

Futien International Trade Center (China Commodity City)

The main attraction of the city and the key object is the Futien consumer market. This is an incredibly large building, the length of which is more than 3 km. More than 300 thousand people work at the market every day, and even more people visit it. The market is located on five floors, divided into sectors (five sectors in total) and has many transitions. There are more than 100,000 stores (“shops”) on the territory of the market. Each sector of Futien has a name in the form of a Latin letter of the alphabet, and each store has its own unique number.

Futien is intended for the sale of goods from all over China, including Hong Kong. Foreigners from all over the world come here every day and buy goods for the needs of their business. Basically, the market has a large wholesale trade, and retail sales are less common. The most interesting thing is that an incredible number of items are presented here. If you say that there are more than 10 million of them, you can not be mistaken at all.

It will take about a month to go around the entire market, looking into each shop. Based on the fact that sellers begin to close closer to five o'clock in the evening local time, it is not always possible to find all the necessary goods in a short time. There are air conditioners and seating throughout, so visitors don't have to languish in the hot Ivuvian weather while visiting Futien.

Like any large shopping mall in China, the market attracts a wide variety of businesses. Here you can meet many foreign translators, foreign representatives of various companies providing services to support transactions with the market. This is not surprising, because the variety of goods on the market will amaze even an experienced foreign entrepreneur.

Binwang Night Market

Once upon a time, the word "Bingwan" was the name of a clothing market in Yiwu City, where many different textile products were offered for wholesale. But over time, almost all the sellers from Binwan left to sell their goods to the larger and more attractive Futien market.

However, in the evening and at night, a real fair opens here. Many different tents with goods encircle the empty building of the shopping center and sellers lure visitors with various slogans and shouts. There are both ordinary everyday goods and food products. The market itself is not much different from other similar markets in China, but, nevertheless, it is one of the key objects of the city of Yiwu.

Huangyuan Market Shopping Center

Huangyuan is Yiwu City's largest stock clothing market.

Climate

It is quite hot in Yiwu during the summer. Thermometers can go over the mark of 38 degrees Celsius. However, along with this, it often rains here, accompanied by a copious amount of lightning. In winter, the temperature here is from zero to ten degrees. Travelers, when visiting Yiwu city in spring, summer and autumn, should bring umbrellas, raincoats and waterproof shoes, as well as sun protection.
