How did you get to China and Yiwu? What are you doing here?

The first time I came here was in 2006 with a classmate after an internship at Shandong University. At that time little was known about this city. But my friend had been here before, so I knew roughly that the city is wholesale, based solely on the export of consumer goods. I am currently in the process of purchasing. I work for a Moscow company, we ship toys, household and sporting goods, we produce underwear under our own brand.

What is Yiwu famous for and why is it special? Why is it worth living here?

I must say right away that living here is not easy in the sense that foreigners live in Shanghai, Beijing and other large cities. There are very few places for leisure. The main purpose of life here is to earn money. The main attraction of the city is the largest wholesale market of consumer goods Futien Note. Ed.). The market stretched into five sectors, each with five floors. People from all over the world come here. There are also large wholesale markets for clothing, food and production materials.

I travel a lot in China on business trips. But for recreation I prefer Hangzhou, Shanghai, Hong Kong.

Businessmen from the Middle East and Central Asia are the main contingent here. They have their own kindergartens and schools. There is a mosque in the city. There are also a large number of restaurants and cafes, where Oriental cuisine is widely represented. There are many Russian speakers in the city who work here, study or just spend time. There are many communities of Arabs and Indians.

There are no Chinese friends. Basically, communication is limited to work.

Would you like to leave Yiwu? Where and why?

I'm not considering leaving at the moment. Since there are a large number of plans and projects, the implementation of which requires personal presence.

What are the main difficulties foreigners face in Yiwu?

To be honest, I don't see any problems. It might just be a language barrier. For a very long time I got used to the southern pronunciation, because before that, at the universities of Russia and China, we were taught only in the northern dialect.

I would probably advise students to come here after graduation. Language practice and practice related to foreign economic activity, they can get here in full in a very short period of time. All this will help them in their future life and work in China.

Yiwu is located too far from the sea to develop as a port, in addition, the city is located in an area almost unsuitable for agriculture, and there are no minerals here. The growth of Yiwu trade began in the late 70s, when the first local businessmen began to expand their trade relations with more developed cities. The famous Chinese (connections) were especially strong in Yiwu, whereby there was a rapid exchange of business information and contacts. It was this that became one of the main driving forces for the development of the market city, given the relatively poor support of the industrial sector.

Yiwu is one of those Chinese cities that showcase the success of Deng Xiaoping's reforms that began in 1978. The new pricing system and permission to engage in private enterprise allowed the local tertiary sector of the economy to develop rapidly.

The decentralization of state control over trade in certain areas led to the fact that in 1982 the Yiwu authorities launched China's first free market. Since then, its turnover has continued to grow relentlessly.

At the moment, Yiwu has grown from a simple wholesale market into a whole cluster, which is considered the national economy of the country, and its population is 1.2 million people. It has consistently won government awards for its rapid development and exemplary management. In 2005, Yiwu was named the world's largest light industry market in a joint report by the World Bank, the United Nations and Morgan Stanley.
