The Boeing 777 is a long-range twin-engine airliner with a wide fuselage. The aircraft has more than three hundred passenger seats and, depending on the modification, can fly a distance from 9,695 kilometers to 21,560 kilometers. Its characteristic feature is the presence of jet engines with the largest diameter in the world. This is approximately 3.5 meters. Eight leading air carriers were consulted before the aircraft was built. The group's first meeting took place in January 1990. It included such airlines as: Japan Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific Airways, Delta Airlines, All Nippon Airways, Qantas United Airlines.

The Boeing 777 was designed to replace the previous generation of wide-body aircraft, as well as to fill the gap between the Boeing 767 and Boeing 747 models. It is one of the first aircraft from the Boeing aircraft manufacturer to be equipped with the Fly by Wire digital control system. It is also the first commercial passenger aircraft designed using computer technology. Individual components of the aircraft were developed using 3D CAD CATIA software developed by IBM and Dassault Systemes.

On October 14, 1990, United Airlines placed its first order for 34 Boeing 777s, worth $11 billion. On January 4, 1993, the first “triple sevens” began to be produced. And on April 9, 1994, the first Boeing 777 was produced with serial number WA001. The first flight took place on June 12 of the same year. Test flights were carried out over the next eleven months. The nine aircraft were tested in climates ranging from the arid deserts of Edwards Air Force Base in California to frigid Alaska. On April 19, 1995, after passing all tests, the Boeing 777 received a certificate of airworthiness from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Joint Aviation Administration (JAA).

The Boeing 777 is available in two lengths. The base model 777-200 has a length of 63.7 meters, which entered service with United Airlines in 1995. After two years, a model with an extended flight radius was released - 777-200ER (Extended Range). This model first entered service with British Airways. The second version of the Boeing 777 is the 777-300 model. This is a version extended by 10.1 meters compared to the 777-200 model, which can accommodate up to 550 passenger seats. This version began flying in 1998.

In 2004, a version was released - 777-300ER. This version allowed longer flights than the 777-300. And in 2006, the airline received a Boeing 777-200LR (Longer Range). At this time, it became the longest-range passenger airliner. This model was called "Worldliner". And since 2009, the cargo Boeing 777F (Freighter) began flying. The 777F, 777-300ER and 777-200LR are powered by General Electric GE90-115B engines. Also, to reduce fuel consumption, the curved wingtips became slightly larger. All other models are equipped with GE90, Pratt & Whitney PW4000 engines, or RollsRoyce Trent-800 engines. The cockpit is equipped with multifunctional Honeywell LCD screens. The wings are angled at 31.6 degrees to achieve an optimal cruising speed of Mach 0.83. Each 777-300ER main landing gear tire can carry a load of nearly 27 tons. There is also a modification for the Air Force. This is a KS-777 model used as an aerial tanker.

After 2000, the Boeing 777 became the best-selling model of the manufacturer of the same name. The most common variant purchased by airlines is the 777-200ER.

The Boeing 777 is considered one of the largest passenger aircraft over the past 20 years in Russian and world aviation. It is also called Boeng T7, which means Triple Seven, or “Three Sevens”.

The largest number of these airliners are operated by Transaero (14 aircraft) and Aeroflot (16 aircraft).

The layout of the Boeing 777 cabin, the best places to fly, technical characteristics - all this is in this article.

Short description

This Boeing model is the very first in history; its design was developed in the 90s of the last century without paper drawings, entirely on a computer using special programs.

This is the most reliable airliner in the history of aviation, which carries out long flights without a single stop.

The Boeing 777 belongs to the wide-body passenger aircraft. It has been in operation from 1995 to the present day.

The capacity is 305-550 people, the flight range is 9,100-17,500 kilometers.

Technical characteristics of the Boeing 777

It is the largest airliner in the world with only 2 engines. These are powerful General Electric gas turbine engines. The landing gear consists of 6 wheels, which makes it different from other aircraft.

Let's look at the technical characteristics of the Boeing 777 for modifications 200 and 300.

Interior and interior layout

The Boeing 777, as noted above, has several varieties. Each of the modifications has 3 or 4 salons - each has its own layout, which directly depends on the customer.

The interior of the cabins is dominated by curved lines, indirect lighting, and wide luggage racks. The size of the porthole relative to the earlier ones is 380x250 mm.

Economy class capacity is up to 555 people. The seats are arranged 10 in a row. Compared to the first Boeing 777 models, since 2011 the interior has been modernized, making it more modern.

In business class, the seats are arranged 6 in a row, and they fold out into a full-size bed, which is very convenient during long flights. Due to the fact that the total number of seats is smaller than in economy class, there is more space here.

Imperial class is designed for the most comfortable and expensive flights. Increased attention, additional services, the best cuisine - all this for special guests.

The interior layout of a Boeing 777-300 operated by Aeroflot is shown in the photo below.

The best seats on the plane

Depends on the overall equipment of the cabin. When purchasing tickets, you can choose any seats, but it is preferable to find the most convenient ones so that the flight is pleasant and comfortable.

The best seats are located near the emergency exits: there is additional legroom. Comfortable seats on the Boeing 777-300 are considered to be those located in rows 11-16 - these are places where there are 3 seats in a row (except for those next to the toilet). Good seats are located near the aisle - there is an opportunity to stretch your legs for a short time, but with pleasure.

- if the modification provides double seats near the window, then when flying in pairs it is better to choose them;

In economy classes, the closer to the nose of the plane, the wider the distance between the rows of seats;

Those in the tail shake the most, those near the wings shake the least;

If the airliner is not fully loaded with passengers, then there are fewer people in the tail and, accordingly, more space.

Of course, these are average figures, since different airlines have their own nuances in the design of the cabins of the aircraft they own, and it does not matter that in essence they are the same Boeing 777.

"Transaero"

The Russian aviation company Transaero owns 14 Boeing 777 aircraft. Of these, 9 are modifications of the Boeing 777-200.

This company uses configurations with a passenger capacity of 306 and 323 people, 4 and 3 cabin classes, respectively.

On a passenger aircraft there are usually only 3 classes. But the airline company supplements the standard set with additional subclasses.

In Transaero they are as follows:

Imperial;

Business class (premium);

Economic;

Tourist.

A photo of the interior diagram of the Boeing 777 (Transaero) modification 200 is presented below.

In imperial class, all seats are as comfortable as possible for flights. There are only 12 seats in the cabin, which can be transformed into a bed if necessary and desired. Near each seat there is an LCD screen and a table for eating or working on a PC. Exit to the bathroom directly from the salon.

Business class (premium) contains 14 soft and comfortable seats. But in the fifth row there are seats whose backrests recline to a limited extent.

Economy class is a spacious cabin with a large number of comfortable seats.

There are several places here that are not as convenient as the others: near the bathrooms, near partitions and emergency exits (10th, 29th rows). The backrests of these chairs are limited in reclining.

Tourist class is a type of economy class. There are many comfortable seats here (for example, row 30, A, B, H, K). Less comfortable seats include seats C, D, E, F, G in the 30th row, 42nd and 43rd rows at the end of the cabin.

Aeroflot

This airline's Boeing 777 for long-distance flights sends modification 300. The passenger capacity of these airliners is about 400 people, 3 cabins, 3 classes:

Comfort;

Business class is located at the front of the aircraft. There are 30 chair-beds in the cabin, arranged in a two-two-two pattern. The cabin has its own improved menu, drinks, Internet, a retractable table for working at a PC, the ability to charge a mobile phone or computer, and an individual approach to passengers.

The comfort class salon has 48 seats. These are rows 11-16. Comfortable seats with a width of 49 cm allow you to fly in comfort. Near each chair there is a retractable footrest, which allows you to recline. There is individual lighting, a table, a monitor, and a socket for charging a mobile phone. In the 11th row there is fastening for a baby cradle. You can pre-order baby food separately. Not the most comfortable seats in this class are located near the toilet.

Economy class is the most crowded, with a passenger capacity of 324 people. The seats are arranged in a two-four-two pattern. For each passenger, Aeroflot provided a blanket, pillow, slippers, and a sleep mask. There is a monitor to brighten up the flight while watching a movie or listening to music. It is possible to use the Internet for an additional fee. The width of the seats is 43 cm. There are mounts for a cradle in the 17th, 24th, and 39th rows. You can ask for games and books for children - this is provided by the airline services.

The Boeing 777 was created for long-distance routes with a respectable passenger capacity. It holds a leading position in the world as the largest twin-engine wide-body aircraft. It was the Boeing 777 that set the flight range record among all existing passenger airliners - 21,601 km.

Boeing 777 modifications

Today, 6 active modifications of the aircraft are in operation and 2 are in development.

  1. The 777-200 was originally produced for American airlines. This is the minimum range version for the Boeing 777 family. It is no longer produced,
  2. 777-200ER - extended range modification for international airlines.
  3. 777-200LR - has the longest flight range among all aircraft in the family. This plane set an absolute record. It can fly without refueling between almost any airport in the world that can accommodate the aircraft.
  4. 777-300 - has an extended fuselage. With a single-class cabin layout, it can accommodate up to 550 passengers, which has increased its popularity among Japanese airlines, where routes are characterized by congestion.
  5. 777-300ER - the extended-range version has the most powerful jet engines in the world and is the most sold Boeing 777 model.
  6. 777 Freighter - a cargo model of the airliner. The aircraft's excellent operational characteristics - high payload capacity (103 tons), ease of maintenance, economical fuel consumption - made it popular in the cargo transportation market.
Interesting! In March 2003, the Boeing 777-200ER set a record for flight on a single engine in emergency conditions - 177 minutes.

Passenger cabin plan

Among the various interior layout options, the most popular is the three-class one. The capacity of the various models ranges from 301 (three classes) to 550 (one class). With a three-class cabin plan, passengers are accommodated in the following compartments:

  • Business Class;
  • "comfort" class;
  • Economy class.

The interior design of the cabin uses few right angles, mostly smooth, rounded lines. There are spacious shelves above the seats for hand luggage, soft side lighting. Before the Dreamliner, the Boeing 777 had the largest windows. Airlines can, if desired, quickly change the configuration of the cabin, move bathrooms, seats, and kitchens. The toilet uses an original toilet lid design - it closes slowly using a hydraulic hinge.

Interesting! For the first time in 2003, on the Boeing 777, separate seats (beds and chairs) were equipped for the crew to rest. They are located above the main cabin and equipped with ladders. Some of the beds were installed in the tail. Now other Boeing models are equipped with them.

Business Class

In business class, the seat layout can be of several types, most often it is 2-2-2. There are from two to five rows in total.

The kitchen and toilets are located in the bow, an additional kitchen block and toilets are located behind the last row.

Business class differences:

  • wide comfortable chairs that transform into beds as needed;
  • first-class service with a choice of individual menus;
  • LCD monitors for video entertainment.

All seats in business class are considered comfortable, it all depends on the personal inclinations of the passengers.

Comfort class

In the comfort class, the seats have a 2-4-2 layout. Branch characteristics:

  • the seats are wider and more comfortable than in economy class, the distance between the rows is also much greater;
  • when the backrest is folded, the seat moves forward slightly, which does not cause discomfort to the passenger sitting behind;
  • the seats are equipped with individual monitors and large tables;
  • Passengers are provided with an improved menu.

In total, the “comfort” class occupies 5 rows. The seats in the first row of this section can be considered partly uncomfortable, as they are located immediately behind the business class toilet.

Important! Comfort class passengers do not have their own bathroom and use the toilet in economy class.

Economy class

Economy class has the most cramped conditions, but there is enough personal space according to the standards. The seats are arranged in a 3-4-3 pattern, and in the rear section, where the fuselage tapers, 2-4-2.

The internal space is divided into 3 parts by emergency exits. There are also toilet rooms here. The kitchen block is at the end of the salon and in the area of the second emergency exit.

The best seats are considered to be the seats immediately behind the emergency exits due to the increased space in front. By numbering, this can be 17, 24 and 38 rows (to be confirmed with the air carrier). But these same seats are located right behind the toilets, which not everyone will like.

The seats in the rows in front of the toilets will also be hectic. This is the 23rd, 36, 37, 50, 51 row.

Passengers traveling as a couple may enjoy paired seats in the rear of the aircraft.

Design features

Features of the structural components of the airliner, its design and manufacture:

  1. How many engines does a Boeing 777 have to lift such a huge machine into the air? Like the vast majority of modern jet aircraft - two, but the largest and most powerful in the history of aircraft construction. The diameter of one of the engines installed on the airliner, GE90-115B, is only 0.3 m smaller than the width of the Boeing 737 cabin.
  2. The huge dimensions of the aircraft should determine how much the Boeing weighs. In fact, its weight is much lower than it might seem, thanks to the use of composite materials. Aerodynamic fairings, the main beams of the floor of the cabin for passengers, elevators - 9% of all parts - are made from them.
  3. The aircraft's wings are wider and thicker than those of other airliners, and their design is optimized for cruising speed. This contributed to an increase in flight range and altitude.
  4. The landing gear consists of six wheels with powerful struts, which distinguishes the Boeing 777 from other aircraft. One tire carries a 27-ton load.
  5. The airliner has three hydraulic systems that back up each other, while during landing it is necessary to use one.
  6. To provide emergency power, there is a retractable wind turbine under the fuselage.
  7. The spacious cockpit has a simple design and is equipped with an electronic fly-by-wire control system, but it was decided to leave the traditional steering wheels. Avionics are fully programmable. Fiber optic cables for avionics were used for the first time on a passenger aircraft.
Interesting! For the first time in history, when designing the Boeing 777, drawings on paper were not used, only computer graphics in three-dimensional images. Thanks to the preliminary computer assembly of the liner, it was possible to get rid of production errors.

History of creation

The first work on the creation of the Boeing 777 began in the 70s of the last century. According to the idea of the company's engineers, it was necessary to update several produced models at once and supplement them with new ones. These were versions of the 757, 767 with two engines and the new 777 airliner.

Interesting! The Boeing 777 was originally designed as a three-engine aircraft, but the developers encountered difficulties with the design of the tail section, and the project was frozen indefinitely.

The development of projects 757 and 767 was successfully completed. And then it turned out that the company’s aircraft line lacked a long-haul aircraft capable of transcontinental transportation of a large number of passengers. The company was also prompted to unfreeze the project by the work of the Airbus concern to create the Airbus A330, which would occupy the free segment of the market.

At first, the engineers planned not to create a new family, but to develop a new modification of the Boeing 767, which was given the name 767-X. It was planned to lengthen the fuselage and enlarge the wings. According to the project, the new airliner was designed for 340 passenger seats with a flight range of 13,500 km.

This concept was not understood by airlines. They wanted to have a salon with an easily changing configuration. Another condition was to reduce operating costs. As a result of a significant design change, the new Boeing 777 was introduced.

Interesting! For the first time in history, the development of a new airliner was carried out in close contact with representatives of air carriers and passengers. Never before has the opinion of consumers at the design stage been decisive.

1990 - work began on the creation of the Boeing 777, and after 5 years the airliner took off on its first commercial flight.

In 2013, the airline began developing new models of aircraft of the family - 777-8X, 777-9X.

Place of production

The Boeing 777 is manufactured at its main facility in Seattle, Washington. This plant is located in Everett, near Seattle. The assembly plant is located there, and components are supplied from almost all US states. In total, more than 600 suppliers from different countries are involved in the manufacture of the aircraft.

Interesting! There is no indoor facility in the world larger than Boeing's facility in Seattle. The total length of its façade is 4 km.

It takes about four months from the start of assembly to the delivery of the finished airliner.

Operating companies

A total of 40 airlines operate the Boeing 777. The largest number of aircraft belong to Emirates (United Arab Emirates), Air France (France), Singapore Airlines (Singapore), United Airlines (USA).

Cost of different models

Currently, production of the 777-200 and 777-300 models has already been discontinued. For other modifications, the current price is basic, but it may vary depending on the configuration.

Development prospects

The airline promises to introduce new modifications of the Boeing 777X by 2020, although some technical data of the aircraft are known:

  1. It is assumed that the last member of the family will be the largest aircraft in the world. At the same time, fuel consumption will be reduced.
  2. The contract for the supply of engines was concluded with General Electric. The fan diameter will be 3.35 m. Larger jet engines are not produced in the world. Blades made of composite materials will reduce the overall load on the engine, extending its life.
  3. The wings will be made from composite materials. The basis is taken from the developments in the creation of the Dreamliner.
  4. The wing design is being changed to improve aerodynamic qualities.

As of the fall of 2017, more than 1,500 units of Boeing 777 have already been sold, but competition with Airbus forces continuous improvements and changes to modifications of the aircraft. The airliners have gained a high reputation among airlines and passengers, and new developments should provide an advantage over other aircraft of this class.

Watch a video about the Boeing 777 - the best airliner of the 20th century.

The Boeing 777 is the world's largest wide-body airliner, impressive not only for its size and comfort, but also for its technical characteristics. It is equipped with two of the most powerful jet engines ever installed on a passenger aircraft. This model is one of the most reliable aircraft in its class.

Development history

In 1978, having studied the market and the wishes of air carriers in detail, Boeing introduced 3 fundamentally new developments:

  • twin-engine 757 model with more economical fuel consumption (compared to the previous 727 model);
  • twin-engine long-haul 767 (as a competitor to the Airbus A300);
  • Model 777 with three engines (this aircraft challenged the DC-10 and L-1011 models).

In the future, the first two models will debut with success, and the 777 model project will be postponed indefinitely.

In 1988, it became known about the next project, which was the Boeing 777 with 2 engines. Airlines became interested in this model. At the end of 1989, sales of a new twin-engine model began.

The design process for the 777 was carried out using recommendations from 8 of the world's largest airlines. For the first time in its history, Boeing used such experience. The development process included a specially created working group, the first meeting of which took place in early 1990. The object of their discussion was a list of wishes and recommendations based on the needs and wishes of passengers. That is why the company recognized the 777 as an airliner, the development of which was based on the wishes of the consumer.

The presentation of the aircraft is presented in this video:

The moment the Aeroflot Boeing 777 takes off is recorded in this video:

The springboard for the production of the aircraft was a huge plant in Everett, specially built in 1960 for the development of the 747 model.

The first customer of the new product was United Airlines. This company ordered 34 aircraft. Development of the model began in the early 1990s, and already in 1994 it made its first flight.

Technical features of the liner

The model has a number of distinctive characteristics:

  • The Boeing 777 is the first commercial airliner in history to be designed entirely using computer programs. Its development process was completely free of paper drawings and everything was made using CATIA (3D design system). Thanks to pre-assembly in the program, it was possible to avoid a lot of errors during production.
  • The model holds the record among passenger airliners for flight range – 21,601 km.
  • The height of the aircraft is 18.5 m.
  • Length – 74 m.
  • Wingspan – 64.9 m.
  • Cabin width – 5.87 m.
  • The weight of the 777 model is 160 tons when empty, and with passengers, fuel and luggage it reaches 300 tons.
  • Average fuel consumption is 5000 l per hour.
  • The maximum possible speed is 950 km/h, cruising speed is 905 km/h.
  • The plane is equipped with two powerful engines.
  • Passenger capacity: from 305 to 550 people, taking into account the interior configuration.
  • Maximum flight altitude is 13,100 m.
  • The maximum flight range is from 9.1 to 17.5 thousand km (depending on modification).
  • The total number of toilets in the cabin is 7.

Interior features

The interior of the airliner is practical and stylish. The design is made in curved lines. The cabin has spacious luggage racks and indirect (global) lighting. Multimedia monitors are built into the backs of the seats, which will allow passengers to spend time with interest: watch a movie, listen to news from the cockpit.

Economy Class Boeing 777

Video review of the interior of an Aeroflot Boeing 777:

Each company offers its own interior layout, as it largely depends on the customer’s preferences. The number of seats ranges from 4 in business class to 10 in the budget segment.

The dimensions of the windows are 380 by 250 mm. Due to the lowering shelves, the developers managed to increase the space above the heads. The carefully thought-out layout of the cabin makes it possible to quickly move the seats to achieve the desired configuration.

Boeing 777 cabin layout, best seats

The interior of this model has a base extended by 10 m, which has a passenger capacity of up to 550 people.

Rows 1-5 business class

The most comfortable places. The chairs can accommodate not only sitting, but also lying down. All the advantages of these seats can only be fully appreciated during the flight; their cost is fully justified, because comfort is what is especially important during long flights.

Unlike other classes, there is a fairly large distance between seats - 1 m 60 cm. Passengers are offered the press and a varied menu.

When choosing a seat in business class, you should take into account that there is a toilet near DGHK 1: the sound of flushing water is clearly audible, so the passenger will be constantly distracted by extraneous sounds.

Many airlines have a very thin partition between business class and economy class, but this is not the case with Aeroflot: this carrier leaves a large distance between the compartments, which helps create conditions for optimal sound insulation.

6-11 row

This is the so-called comfort class, that is, intermediate between “business” and “economy”, a new product from Aeroflot. The distance between the seats is slightly smaller than in business class. The seats can be reclined 130 degrees. Each passenger has at his disposal a screen located in the back of the seat in front. With its help you can watch videos and listen to music. Passengers are also offered the latest newspapers.

Rows 17-51

These seats belong to economy class. There is a distance of 81 cm between the seats. This is the most popular and therefore the most spacious class.

In economy class, the seat backs recline 105-100 degrees.

17, 24 and 38 row

They are considered privileged because they have a number of additional advantages: each of these seats cannot recline the back, but the passenger in them has this opportunity. In addition, there is significant legroom in front - just like in business class.

The maximum comfort of these rows is called into question by one “but”: the close proximity of the bathroom. Due to this, there may be a constant crowd of people here. The sound of water is also distracting. If you do not take these nuances into account, then these places are ideal for relaxation and sleep.

On some airliners in rows 23, 36, 37, 50, 51 there is a possibility that the seat backs will be blocked due to their proximity to the toilet.

Seats 23A and 23K have only a small window located on the emergency exit door. The table and multimedia display are located in the armrest.

It is prohibited to block the emergency passage with luggage or hand luggage. Elderly people, disabled people, children or animals cannot be accommodated here.

At first glance, it seems that these are the most inconvenient places, but they have one significant advantage: there is a lot of legroom in front, since there is an emergency passage. This is a great advantage, especially for those passengers who travel long distances.

ABHK seats row 47

They are classified as seats with additional amenities: they are located in the rear and have a large distance in front of the seats. Their advantage is also their location near the window, which offers a magnificent view. The rest of the budget places are no different.

This demonstration video will allow you to get acquainted with the interior of the aircraft and the view from the inside:

Cockpit

The 777's cabin has a clean layout similar to Boeing's predecessors. This is the company's first commercial airliner equipped with a fully program-based fly-by-wire control system. It is equipped with a glass cabin. Has LCD displays from Honeywell.

The Cockpit features the first fiber optic control system network installed on a passenger aircraft. It was also decided to leave control using the steering wheel. The system has a flight parameters protection function: it monitors that pilots do not exceed the flight configuration and also helps to avoid dangerous maneuvers. If necessary, the system can be turned off.

In 2003, an updated cabin was introduced with the additional option of separate crew rest areas, which are located above the main cabin and have stairs. They have 2 armchairs and the same number of beds.

Features and differences of Boeing 777 modifications

Boeing 777-200LR Has the status of an ultra-long-range airliner. He made the longest flight without landing (the range was 17,370 km).

The development of the aircraft took place almost in parallel with the 777-300ER. The Boeing 777-200LR has an additional 3 tanks and increased take-off weight. Innovations include modified wing tips, a strengthened airframe and new landing gear. The model was first delivered to Pakistan International Airlines in 2006.

Boeing 777-300 The length is 11 m longer than its predecessor. Thanks to this, it has the ability to carry 550 passengers in a mono configuration. Compared to outdated models, it has the same number of seats for transporting passengers and range, but at the same time consumes 30% less fuel. Operating costs reduced by 40%. The increased length gave the developers a reason to create skis under the tail of the aircraft to prevent it from hitting the ground during takeoff, and cameras for comfortable maneuvering. The maximum flight distance is 11,120 km. The first copy of this model was put into operation in 1998 by Cathay Pacific.
Boeing 777-300ER It is considered a modified model with increased capacity and the highest take-off weight. Has new main landing gear and additional fuel tanks. The tail, wings and fuselage have been modified and significantly improved. Engines with turbofans are the most powerful jet systems with maximum thrust ratings of 513 kN. The flight range with maximum load has been increased by 34% compared to the previous model and is 14,690 km. In 2004, the first aircraft of this model was delivered to Air France.
Boeing 777 Freighter This airliner is designed to transport cargo. The maximum weight for transportation is almost 103 tons. The maximum flight range is 9043 km.
Boeing 777 (KC-777) In the second half of 2006, the start of production of this tanker aircraft was announced. It could become a full-fledged replacement for the KC-767, which is in service with the US Air Force. The model exceeds the dimensions of the KS-767, so it can deliver a large volume of cargo and personnel. But in 2007, instead of the specified model, the US Air Force proposed a modification of the KC-767 Advanced Tanker.
Boeing 777X The development process of this model started in 2013, mass production has not yet begun, production is planned for 2020. It will be a large but economical aircraft. Its passenger capacity will be 353 people. It will be longer than its predecessors. It is planned to increase aerodynamics, which will give an advantage over other models.

Comparison of Boeing 777 with analogues

The Boeing 777-300 was released to replace the outdated 747 model. The first has a base extended by 11 m, which makes it possible to accommodate a maximum of 550 passengers - the same as in the previous model; the flight range is also the same. But despite this, the Boeing 777-300 is a third more economical in fuel consumption and 40% cheaper to maintain.

The Boeing 777-200 has a strong competitor from Airbus - the A330-300. Distinctive features include the maximum flight range of the first manufacturer: it is significantly higher and amounts to 14,300 km, while that of the competitor is 10,400 km. Boeing also has a higher maximum take-off weight, it is 297,560 kg, while Airbus has a higher maximum take-off weight of 233,000 kg. The A330 model has a smaller cabin width: it is 5.28 m. For its competitor, this figure is slightly larger - 5.87 m.

Price

The cost of a Boeing 777 depends on the modification of the aircraft: it can vary from $270 million to $330 million.

The Boeing 777 is an aircraft whose design was developed not only taking into account the interests of air carriers, but also based on the wishes of passengers. The total number of aircraft deliveries from 1990 to 2011 is 1,372. Aircraft of this model are available in the fleets of the world's largest carriers.

The Boeing 777 is a family of large twin-engine passenger aircraft. Models in this range can accommodate several hundred passengers – from 301 to 550 people. In addition, these aircraft are capable of flying vast distances. The record range is 21 thousand kilometers. The airliners of this line are equipped with the most powerful engines ever used in passenger aviation.

The aircraft of this series became a legend before they even appeared. Project 777 aircraft are perhaps the most popular among operators today.

History of creation

In the 1970s, the constant growth in the popularity of passenger air travel led to the fact that existing aircraft at that time could no longer meet the increased demand. To update the line of airliners, Boeing began to develop new models - the twin-engine 757 and 767, as well as the three-engine 777.

The new airliners would compete with products from Airbus, McDonnell Douglas and Lockheed. However, later the 777 project had to be abandoned due to limited resources and low demand.

The situation changed in the 1980s, when wide-body aircraft became in demand.

At first it was planned to carry out modernization, but the presented project did not satisfy the airline.

Carriers needed an aircraft similar in configuration to the Boeing 747, but designed to fly relatively short distances. The use of three engines was already redundant, and the new car received two engines.

For the project of the revived Boeing 777, the company took a non-standard approach. The development of the aircraft was carried out in constant cooperation with several major airlines. They conducted surveys among passengers, and then combined their results with their requirements for the new liner. Thanks to this approach, it was possible to create an aircraft that is better suited to end users than others.

Development of the Boeing 777 began in 1990. Five years later, the first copy appeared on commercial airlines.

Production

Boeing chose a plant in Everett to manufacture the aircraft. The production area had to be increased almost 2 times. Assembly lines were added that could rotate the fuselage 180 degrees.

Boeing 777-200 model range

The first flight of the Boeing 777 base model 200 was made in June 1994. And less than a year later, United Airlines received its first airliner for commercial operation.

After the success of the first model, the company began developing an airliner designed for flights between continents across the Atlantic Ocean.

This Boeing modification was designated 777-200ER. It turned out to be very popular and became the best-selling aircraft model.

The Boeing 777, model 200LR, has the longest range of any commercial airliner in existence. It is capable of non-stop flights between most airports in the world. The aircraft of this particular modification made a record flight over half the length of the equator and lasting about a day.

Boeing 777-300 model range

Models with the number 300 in the name are versions of aircraft with an extended fuselage. The Boeing 777-300 modification was intended to replace the old Boeing 747. These models have comparable payload and flight range, but the 777 is 30% more fuel efficient and 40% cheaper to operate.

The improved model of the Boeing 777-300 aircraft was designated 777-300ER.

This is the largest and heaviest airliner in the Boeing 777 family. The flight range has been increased by a third. To achieve such characteristics, many design elements have been improved in this modification and additional fuel tanks have been added.

The Boeing 777, originally intended to carry passengers, also has a cargo modification called the Boeing 777 Freighter. This aircraft takes on board more than a hundred tons of cargo and flies over a distance of more than 9,000 kilometers.

Prospects

Since 2013, Boeing has been developing the promising Boeing 777X series. The company plans to begin production of these aircraft by 2020.

This airliner will combine all available engine and design improvements to make it the most fuel-efficient aircraft in the world.

Design

The speed and range of an aircraft is determined by how much it weighs. Boeing, starting with the first model 777-200, began to use high technology much more widely than before:

  • composite materials in the fuselage structure;
  • Fly-by-Wire digital control system;
  • avionics with replaceable software;
  • LCD screens in the cockpit;
  • on-board information network on fiber optics.

Thanks to such innovations, it was possible to reduce the weight of the aircraft and their cost. The takeoff weight of an empty Boeing 777 ranges from 140 to 170 tons.

Cockpit

When designing the cockpit for the Boeing 777, special attention was paid to comfort. Comfortable seats, quiet background noise, good visibility - already in the base model 200 everything was done to ensure that pilots had no distractions.

Flight and diagnostic information is displayed on panels and color displays for better human perception. For the crew to rest during long flights, special places with chairs and beds are provided.

Interior

The interior design of the Boeing 777 is known for its flowing lines, spacious overhead bins and ambient lighting. Airlines themselves determine how many seats they need to install.

The number of seats depends on the number of classes and the layout of seats in the cabin.

From four to ten chairs are installed in a row in different classes. There is more space above the middle row thanks to drop-down luggage compartments.

Glider

Composite materials used to lighten the airframe's structure account for nine percent of the total weight. The wing profile is designed for the speed of the Boeing 777, reaching 84% of the speed of sound in cruising flight. Thanks to its wingspan and increased strength, the Boeing 777 can fly at altitudes of up to 13 kilometers.

Engines

The Boeing 777 family, starting with the base model 200, uses the most modern engines. Thanks to them, the speed of the Boeing 777 aircraft approaches the speed of sound.

Their record power provides the aircraft with excellent flight characteristics. Engines for aircraft of this line are manufactured by General Electric.

Avionics

The airliners are equipped with small computers. The design provides for their easy replacement during modernization. The EFIS digital complex includes:

  • LCD displays;
  • data management system and library with information about aircraft subsystems;
  • power management system;
  • control system for cabin sealing and air parameters.

Chassis

Boeing 777 aircraft have six-wheel landing gear. This achieves effective load distribution when moving along the runway. Due to the large size of the tires, it was necessary to improve the braking system. Each of the six tires in the landing gear can withstand a load of up to 27 tons, which is more than that of.

Flight performance compared to competitors

The 1990s saw significant changes in the passenger airliner market. Some companies were absorbed by larger ones. Some aircraft makers have exited the market due to economic difficulties and declining demand. As a result, only two manufacturers remained - Airbus in Europe and Boeing in the USA.

Russia continues to produce passenger aircraft, but production volumes do not compare with the two largest suppliers of aircraft.

Their aircraft are present in all niches of passenger transportation. This preserves competition, and carrier companies have the opportunity to choose airliners that have the most suitable technical characteristics.

The flight performance characteristics of the Boeing 777 aircraft in comparison with competing models from Airbus are presented in the tables.

Exploitation

The Boeing 777 was developed taking into account the wishes of carrier companies and passengers. Thanks to this, the airliner takes into account most of the details that make up a comfortable flight.

Advantages

A significant advantage of aircraft of this line is the smoothness of takeoff and landing. Improved sound insulation significantly reduces engine noise.

The wide luggage racks can accommodate even large bags. To entertain passengers during long flights, multimedia systems are built into the backs of the seats.

Flaws

When ordering aircraft, airlines themselves choose the cabin layout. Some airlines, wanting to make more profit, install too many seats. The result of this approach is crowding and inconvenience for passengers, especially in economy class.

Flight safety

The Boeing 777 is considered the safest aircraft in the world. It has not experienced a single confirmed disaster due to equipment failure.

There were emergency landings and fires, but after that most of the airliners returned to service.

4 people died in these incidents. During operation since 1995, 6 aircraft of this type were lost. Two events stand out, in which 537 people died.

In March 2014, a Malaysia Airlines plane disappeared from radar. The Boeing 777-200 was believed to have crashed into the Indian Ocean. During three years of searching, several fragments of the fuselage were discovered, but the cause of the fall could not be determined. There are many versions, but none of them has received sufficient evidence.

The second event was the crash that occurred with the Boeing 777-200ER near Donetsk on July 17, 2014. The flight of the same company, Malaysia Airlines, was shot down while flying over the combat area. As a result of a lengthy investigation, the commission determined that the plane was shot down by a surface-to-air missile of the Buk complex. However, it was not established which of those involved in the conflict shot down the Boeing.

Interesting facts and records are associated with the Boeing 777 line of aircraft:

  • When designing the 777-200, the first model of this family, not a single drawing was made on paper. For the first time, the entire development process was completed using only computers.
  • The General Electric GE90-115B engine, installed on the Boeing 777 models 200LR and 300ER, is the largest and most powerful in the world.
  • The longest single-engine flight was made by the Boeing 777-200ER. The duration was 177 minutes.
  • A Boeing 777 made a non-stop flight over a distance of 21,601 km. For a 200LR model airliner, the flight from Hong Kong to London took 22 hours and 42 minutes.

Nordwind Airlines

Nordwind Airlines – translated as “North Wind” – is a Russian airline that operates Boeing 777-200ER and 777-300ER aircraft.

Present on the passenger air transportation market since 2008. The Nordwind fleet has 21 aircraft, of which five are Boeing 777.

The Boeing 777-200 has a cabin that can accommodate 393 seats. It includes business class and economy class. The seating arrangement on the plane is as follows:

  • business class – 2-2-2 layout;
  • economy class - most rows 3-4-3, some rows 2-4-2.

In economy class, there are several rows that differ from most others in terms of convenience. In rows numbered 5 and 6 there are seats in front of which there are no seats. There will be no problems with the reclining seat of the front neighbor; there is enough room for the knees of even a tall person. There is also relatively plenty of space in front of rows 12, 14, 15, 33 and 34, but there are toilets nearby, which does not contribute to comfort.

The cabin on Boeing 777-300 aircraft is divided into three classes and can accommodate 312 passengers. The seating arrangement is as follows:

  • business class – 1-2-1;
  • comfort class - 2-4-2;
  • economy class - most rows are 3-3-3, some rows are 2-3-2.

The best seats in comfort class are in row 20. In economy class, there is additional space in front of seats in rows 45, 46, 60 and 61, but nearby toilets reduce the amenities.

Boeing 777 aircraft from Nordwind are quite attractive for long flights due to their safety and level of comfort.
