Will the Khersones sailboat return to Sevastopol? The legendary training ship rots and is plundered at a layup in Kerch

It became known that, perhaps, the training sailing ship Khersones will return to Sevastopol. The history of the ship with such a close name to all of us has been very sad in recent years.

"Khersones" (Khersones) - a training three-masted ship (a vessel with full sailing equipment).
This modern three-masted ship was built in Poland at the Gdansk shipyard named after. Lenin in 1989 based on the prototype of sailing ships of the early 20th century. In Poland, the same type of sailboats were built: "Druzhba" for Odessa, "Mir" for Leningrad, "Khersones" for Sevastopol, "Pallada" and "Nadezhda" for Vladivostok, according to the rules and under the supervision of the Maritime Register USSR commissioned by the Ministry of Agriculture of the USSR.

During construction, the ship's hull was painted white. This decision was made by the first captain of the vessel O. E. Elfimov. In 2003, the ship's hull was repainted with a special dark red paint by AKZO-Farben-International, which is decorated with a strip of sandy-golden ocher running along the side. The well-known gold stern ornaments of this series of vessels (all vessels of the same type have this finish) harmoniously fit into the new color scheme

UPS "Khersonesos" on March 28 celebrated its 25th anniversary. After launching, the owner of the vessel was the Sevastopol PURP "Atlantika".

In 1991, Khersones was transferred to the Kerch State Marine Technological University. From the same period, on a lease basis, the sailboat was operated by the German travel company Inmaris (German: Inmaris Perestroika Sailing GmbH) as a cruise ship.

Since 2006, due to a financial dispute between the lessee and the shipowner, the operation of the vessel was terminated, and it was laid up in the port of Kerch.

In recent years, a beautiful sailboat "died" at the pier, turning into a pile of scrap metal, and brought only losses to the shipowner. Nobody's attempts to revive the ship were not successful. But the breath of the "Crimean spring" touched him too.

Now the training sailing ship Khersones can return to its homeland. In Sevastopol, the ship will be repaired and restored to its original functions: it will become an excellent school for future conquerors of the sea.

The world practice of training specialists for work at sea provides for cadets to undergo mandatory practical training in the conditions of an operating ship. A special pride of higher educational institutions of the maritime orientation is the presence in their arsenal of an operating sailboat. And there are such worthy establishments in our city.

By the way, within the walls of the former Navy Academy. P.S. Nakhimov, which in the near future will return its historical “Black Sea Higher Order of the Red Star Naval School named after Pavel Stepanovich Nakhimov”, the wise youth mentor Mikhail Ivanovich Sukhina, the captain of the frigate Khersones, who stood at his helm all the years of operation of the ship, is working. Without a doubt, we have a specialist who is able to pass on his invaluable experience to young navigators.

Obviously, the revived sailboat could become a wonderful emblem and symbol of our glorious hero city. The point is small - to return the ship to its native harbor. But the almost completed step to tow the sailboat failed.

During the years of sludge in Kerch, the ship was subjected to severe corrosion. Property, equipment, rigging and spars, as well as memorable gifts, cups and awards earned in prestigious international sailing competitions (for example, in the race dedicated to the 500th anniversary of the discovery of America) were gradually plundered.

The process of destruction of the ship, in which nothing has been invested for 7 years, is inevitable. The Ukrainian state did not find the means to preserve the pride of the maritime power. Now it is not too late to save the sailboat if it is delivered to the Sevastopol Bay.

It almost happened the other day. To tow the ship, the Black Sea Fleet allocated 3 tugboats and 2 escort boats. However, the weather did not allow the task to be completed quickly. And then the rector of the Kerch Marine Technological Institute prevented the ship from being transported.

It became known that earlier he had an unspoken order from the Kyiv deputies to tow the ship outside the Crimea. Fortunately, this did not happen. Otherwise, the ship would have been lost to Sevastopol and the world's sailing fleet forever.

The Ukrainian government does not value such attributes (for example: the Druzhba sailboat, which has been laid up in Odessa for more than 10 years). According to the decision of the rector of KMTU, "Khersonesos" was not allowed to go to Sevastopol. As they say, things are still there.

His future fate is being decided. But, based on the experience of many recent years, no prospects can be expected from the former shipowner.

HISTORY OF THE SAILBOAT "KHERSONES"

Sailing training vessel "Khersonesos". Built in Poland at the Gdansk shipyard named after Lenin in 1989. Initially named "Alexander Grin", but at the end of construction, in honor of the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus', it was renamed "Chersonese".

A modern three-masted frigate is a ship with full direct sailing weapons. It is one of a series of six ships of the same type (sisterships): "Gift of Mlodzezha", "Friendship", "Peace", "Pallada" and "Hope". The vessels of this series are the fastest training sailboats according to the STI (Sail Training International) classification.

In 1997, the sailboat gained notoriety by becoming the last ship to sail around Cape Horn with its engines turned off. The previous sailing ship of the same class, Cape Horn, was passed in 1949. It was the Pamir barque. Since then, no one has been able to repeat the feat of "Chersonesos". All other large sailing ships were forced to turn on their engines to pass Cape Horn.

The Chilean Association awarded the vessel a certificate of passage of Cape Horn, the captain of the Khersones Mikhail Ivanovich Sukhin was awarded the honorary title of Albatross.

In 2003, the ship's hull was painted dark red, decorated with a stripe of sandy golden ocher along the side and an ornament of the same color on the stern.

From 2006 to 2015, the ship was in a long and forced stay in the port of Kerch, for such a long period, due to lack of funding, the technical condition of the sailboat completely fell into disrepair.

In 2014, the new shipowner of the Khersones sailboat was the Ministry of Transport of Russia, FSUE "Rosmorport".

On October 9, 2015, the Khersones ship was towed to the Sevastopol branch of Zvezdochka for repairs and was docked on December 10, 2015. The repair was completed in June 2016. The original painting was returned to the ship. The shipowner decided that the ship Khersones will be based in the port of Sevastopol.

Since August 2016, on board the Khersones training vessel, cadets from the State Maritime University named after Admiral F.F.

In September 2016, the Khersones sailboat, for the first time since 2006, set off on its maiden voyage and took part in the SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta – 2016 international sailing regatta.

From June 2016 to the present, the captain of the vessel is Teslenko Dmitry Sergeevich.

About the shipowner: The Federal State Unitary Enterprise "Rosmorport" promotes the development of Russia's maritime transport infrastructure and enhances the competitiveness of Russian seaports through efficient operation, maintenance and development of the federal property assigned to the enterprise in seaports. Takes an active part in the implementation of federal targeted programs for the development of maritime transport in the Russian Federation. Provides services to ensure the safety of navigation in the waters of seaports and on the approaches to them.

Sevastopol is famous for its historical sights and is rightfully considered the city of glory for Russian sailors. Every year since 2014, the base of the Black Sea Fleet has been replenished with new ships. Some are returning to service after repair and restoration work, the other part are completely new models with modern equipment. Since 2016, the Khersones training frigate has been another hallmark of Sevastopol, which the locals and the entire Black Sea Fleet are proud of.

Sailboat "Khersonesos" - second life

In the Ukrainian Crimea, the ship was doomed and rusted in the port for more than ten years. Due to lack of funding, the sailboat stopped serving and the crew was reduced. Time did not spare the once beautiful ship: the masts and deck rotted, and rust began to eat away the metal. To give the frigate a second life, the federal enterprise Rosmorport took the ship under its protection.

Day of the open gangway at Chersonesos

In 2015, the Khersones was towed to the shipyard of Sevastopol, where for several months all the equipment of the ship was completely restored. After the repair, the ship went to sea and received a “baptism of fire”, taking part in the Black Sea regatta of large sailboats, which took place off the coast of Sochi.

Now the ship performs the tasks that were set during its construction. The board of "Khersonesos" is an excellent school for training specialists of various maritime professions. Cadets from different cities of Russia undergo study and practice.

How to get on the Khersones sailboat

From time to time, an open gangway day is arranged on the sailboat: everyone can board for free and examine everything in detail on their own or with a tour, turn the helm or hit the bell, look into the cabins, climb the captain's bridge and, of course, take memorable pictures on the revived sailboat .

The three-masted frigate can be seen at the main holidays of the republic, it is always awaited with enthusiasm. Thousands of spectators come to see how the Khersones raises its sails at the sunset of the sun sinking into the sea. If the weather conditions are right, the ship enters the bay of Sevastopol with all sails raised, as it was on the Navy Day. A ship with 26 sails passes along the formation of warships to the delight of all present.

Undoubtedly, now the Khersones has begun a new life stage, and the sailboat will adequately serve its country.

There are many surprising and unexpected twists and turns in the history of the Khersones sailboat. The sailboat survived more than one storm, worked as a tourist vessel and changed color to bright red, made the legendary round of Cape Horn under the same sails. It was supposed to rust in the sump of the Kerch port, but the "Crimean Spring" changed its fate.

Birth

The three-masted sailing frigate Khersones was designed by the Polish designer Zygmund Horen. According to his drawings, large sailing ships were designed, such as Mir, Nadezhda, Pallas and others.

"Khersonesos" was laid down in 1987 at the Gdansk shipyard. Lenin in Poland by order of the Ministry of Fisheries of the USSR. It was the fourth ship in the series: "Gift of Youth" and "Friendship" were already in operation, the construction of the "Mir" was being completed.

The frigate was built according to the prototype of sailing ships of the early 20th century and is equipped with full ship-type sailing equipment. 26 sails are controlled exclusively by hand and provide the main movement of the vessel. Two engines driven by one controllable pitch propeller are used for sailing in stormy conditions, as well as when entering and leaving the port.

Initially, the ship was planned to be named after Alexander Grin. However, at the end of the construction, which coincided with the 1000th anniversary of the baptism of Rus', the sailboat got its name in honor of the ancient city in which the Kiev prince Vladimir was baptized in the 10th century.

Life

With the commissioning in 1989, the vessel under the control of the Black Sea detachment of training ships made international training voyages with cadets on board. In 1991, the Khersones PUS was transferred to the Kerch branch of the Kaliningrad Technological Institute of the Fishing Industry and Economy. In 1992, the ship passed under the Ukrainian flag, lost foreign exchange financing and the opportunity to purchase spare parts for the repair of imported equipment.

The leadership of the Kerch Marine Technological Institute has already concluded an agreement with the German company Inmaris Perestroyka Sailing, according to which Inmaris bore the majority of the costs of maintaining and operating the vessel in exchange for the possibility of its commercial operation. The ship took part in many maritime festivals in Europe and completed many long-distance voyages. In 2000, the ship was re-equipped. At the same time, relations with Inmaris were severed by the Ukrainian side. In 2003, the vessel was repainted in red, for greater recognition, as well as to save money and labor resources.

Death

With the coming to power in Ukraine of the "orange" everything has changed. According to the leadership of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine, the ship did not make a profit, although a training ship, by definition, cannot make a profit. In March 2006, when the departure for the next flight was already registered, the Minister of Agrarian Policy Baranovsky forbade the exit. This caused protests among the students of KMTI, there were rallies, petitions to all authorities of the country. As a result, the rector of KITI Kolodyazhny V.V. was fired, and the ship was gradually dying in the Kerch port. The German side filed a lawsuit against Ukraine, hoping to return the funds spent on the re-equipment of the vessel. After a process that went on in the Hague court for about 5 years, Ukraine paid 4.8 million euros. In May 2006, the ship was laid up in the Kerch port with a reduction in the crew. Gradually, the sailboat began to rust and die.

resurrection

After the entry of Crimea and Sevastopol into Russia, the fate of the sailboat changed. In accordance with the decision of the Crimean Maritime Council dated April 11, 2015, “Khersonesos” was transferred to federal ownership by the order of the Council of Ministers of Crimea and the order of the Ministry of Property and Land Relations of Crimea and assigned to FSUE “Rosmorport” on the right of economic management. The vessel was accepted under the transfer act on June 8, 2015 in the port of Kerch.

After receiving the vessel, FSUE "Rosmorport" carried out work on the transfer of the STS "Khersones" under the Russian flag, execution of documents confirming the ownership and state registration of rights to the vessel. The enterprise towed the ship in a wrapped state along the route Kerch - Sevastopol.

The repair of the ship is carried out under an agreement with Zvezdochka CS JSC (former Sevastopol Marine Plant named after Sergo Ordzhonikidze) in Sevastopol under the supervision of the Russian River Register. The sailboat was returned to its historical white color with a blue stripe along the side and golden ocher decorations. Full repair and modernization of the ship should be completed by August 2016. The amount of funding is more than 150 million rubles. Further use of the vessel is planned for its intended purpose - conducting educational swimming practices for cadets and students of Russian maritime educational institutions.

Since July 2, 2016, the three-masted Khersones sailboat has been officially assigned to the port of Sevastopol. The decision was made, in particular, because of the construction of the Kerch bridge, which in the future would not allow the ship to go to sea, since the height of the masts is about 50 meters. On August 12, the sails were raised on the ship. On August 22, the ship was consecrated by the rector of the Vladimir Cathedral-tomb of the admirals, Father Alexei. As of the beginning of September, Khersones is preparing to participate in the Russian stage of the Black Sea regatta SCF Black Sea Tall Ships Regatta 2016.

In the age of electronics, computers and nuclear technology? The controversy about this reached its peak thirty-five years ago. Skeptics argued that training specialists for the modern fleet, driving them along shrouds and yards, is the same as teaching drivers the rules of driving on horse-drawn carts. However, many of the sailors-professionals were of a different opinion. On sea sailing ships in everyday routine, valuable qualities are brought up in a person: mutual assistance, the ability to make the right decision in difficult situations and a sense of collective responsibility. There is nothing worse when a person hopes for the possibilities of modern technology, having met one on one with the elements, which can take away the mind and strength. On a sailboat, the interaction of the vessel, wind and waves is felt every second. In the end, the second point of view won out. After a long break training sailing ships began to build in almost all countries. The undisputed leader in the creation training sailing fleet was the state of the USSR.
