The charm of Tuscany resorts: the sea, entertainment, a fairy tale in reality! The best beaches of Tuscany: a detailed review The best resorts of Tuscany by the sea

Sea, beaches and resort life in Tuscany

One of the most frequent questions that I have been answering lately is “help me decide on the choice of a resort in Tuscany, so that the sea is clean, the beaches are sandy and free, and it’s not boring in the evenings ...” with slight variations on the theme of holidays with children or in youth company - finally took shape in a single article, which, I hope, will be useful to many.

Another reason for writing it, strange as it may seem, is the absolute impossibility of giving an unambiguous answer to this question in all parameters of the “search” for a beach holiday. The fact is that the coast of Tuscany is very different, each with its own characteristics and its own “Pros and Cons”, which I tried to state more or less clearly.

The most famous resorts of the north coast of Tuscany or Versions (Viareggio, Lido di Camaiore, Marina di Pietrasanta, Forte dei Marmi) have long established themselves as prestigious places for summer holidays in Italy thanks to a well-developed infrastructure with a wide choice of hotels for every taste, expensive or traditional restaurants, cafes, evening cocktail bars. It is pleasant to stroll here in the evenings - all the suburbs of Viareggio are connected by one wide promenade "Passegiata", here are the best discos in Tuscany, shops and boutiques of all famous brands. From here, excursions to the main cities of Tuscany are conveniently planned.

And now about the main thing, about the sea. sandy beaches Apuan Riviera unusually wide, the sandy bottom is shallow ( which is not very popular with lovers of long swims, but just pleases parents with kids). The water in the sea is quite clean ( as far as this is generally applicable to any sandy bottom), as evidenced by the Blue Flags of Quality, awarded in Italy only to environmentally friendly resorts. However, absolutely all local beaches are urban ( especially in Viareggio) and paid, often with 15-20 rows of densely standing umbrellas. In Versilia, there are practically no hotels with their own beaches, there are no free beaches within walking distance from hotels, so among all other vacation expenses, you need to take into account the additional payment for beach places. Thanks to constant charter flights to Pisa (from May to September) the main offers from large Russian tour operators are here, so there are always a lot of Russian tourists in Versilia.

Resorts of southern Tuscany ( coast of Livorno, Grosseto and Pisa) unlike Versilia, they are more democratic and less pretentious! Small resort summer towns and villages also have a developed infrastructure, designed mainly for Italian family tourism. The sea here is very clean, with wide sandy beaches and a convenient entry for children. Almost all hotels (3 * and 4 *) and even aparthotels in this part of the Tuscany coast have their own beaches and pools, which alternate with free ("wild") beaches accessible to all.

Riviera Etruscans especially convenient for day trips and excursions to all the cities of Tuscany, even if you do not plan to rent a car. However, in the evenings there is not as much entertainment as in Versilia. Fans of evening promenades overlooking the sea will not be able to “walk along the embankment”, since there are no embankments in these towns either. All resort life is concentrated on one main street ( meters 500) with pizzerias, ice cream parlors and small shops for the most necessary things. Recently, many people choose these places precisely because of the tranquility and ease of relaxation, and most importantly, because of the special, favorable microclimate of pine parks that stretch along the entire coast!

A few words about the towns themselves. Marina di Castagneto Carducci, Marina di Bibbona, Cecina Mare- quiet resort towns, where Italian families with children mainly relax (there are several playgrounds, the Cavallino matto amusement park and a large water park). The towns are convenient for short excursions to Pisa, Volterra, Lucca, for enogastronomic outings in medieval towns and even visiting the thermal baths.

San Vincenzo is by far the most popular resort on the coast of Livorno. There is also a small "promenade" ( imagine one main street (800 meters) with a dozen different boutiques, cafes and restaurants, quite nice and calm, with resort houses on 2-3 floors), where all vacationers pour out in the evenings in the summer. In July and August, there are many events for the entertainment of tourists, such as "white nights", fairs with tastings or open-air concerts. The newest yacht port "Marina San Vincenzo", like all yacht ports on the coast, is traditionally a favorite place for evening walks and entertainment: aperitifs at sunset, dinners overlooking the yachts, evening cocktails with music.

Personally, I like the coast of Tuscany Castiglioncello- a small town near Livorno, was once the famous Dolce Vita resort of the 60s. True, even here all the entertainment of vacationers is concentrated on one main square, or in the nearby yacht port. But Castiglioncello does not feel like a provincial resort, perhaps because of the Italians themselves, who spend their holidays here or come for the weekend. The town still remains such a “fashionable place”, where colorful and quite nice “bikers” from all over Italy invariably gather on Saturdays, and theater festivals and concerts are held in the local Castle in spring and summer. Starting in May, it is always quite lively here in the evenings, there are good restaurants and beautiful bars. People come here and just take a walk along the Promenade along the sea or in a pine park, where there is also a small playground. The main "minus" of Castiglioncello is the beaches, of which there are not so many. Tiny beaches in coves, with a few exceptions for paid ones with loose sand, are rocky and with a pebble bottom, which especially attracts lovers of clear water and snorkeling.

prestigious resorts in south coast of Tuscany considered Punta Ala And Castiglione della Pescaia. IN Punta Ala, however, apart from a chic yacht port with expensive yachts and expensive villas hidden in the greenery of pine parks, there is nothing either. Main street with two or three boutiques along the pier with yachts 100 m! Unlike him in Castiglione della Pescaia very nice historic castle centre, always lively in the evenings the harbor promenade and the main street with restaurants, bars and boutiques. In these places, perhaps, the cleanest sea in Tuscany with beaches of fine light sand. But the one that appeared recently in the proposals of our maintenance Marina di Grosseto may seem even more "democratic" than the already mentioned towns of Livorno ( it, by the way, is positioned as an inexpensive vacation by the sea in Tuscany).

The main disadvantages of these places is, oddly enough, the infrastructure. These resorts cannot boast of an abundance of hotels, there are very few good 3 * or 4 * hotels ( the exception is three 5* hotels in Punta Ala). In addition, it is quite difficult to get out on excursions around the cities of Tuscany on your own (without a car) from here. Still on the sidelines Punta Ala, little accessible in every sense to a wide range of tourists ( it is almost impossible to spend a holiday here without a car) and firmly holding the bar of a true VIP resort in Tuscany, a resort for the elite, which provides a great opportunity to isolate yourself from the outside world during your vacation!

We are familiar with its tart wines, cheeses, fish delicacies. After all, it is here that grapes are grown on arid soils, which are used to prepare the famous Chianti, Montepulciano. The area is famous for the great artists Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Rafael Santi, this is the birthplace of Dante Alighieri. Their creations still delight any traveler who has visited Florence. Choosing a beach holiday in Tuscany, you can not only soak up the cleanest beaches, but also visit the famous old towns of Italy.

The combination of a beach holiday with a visit to historical sites

And how many small and very beautiful towns with ancient history are here, among them Siena. The sea coast of Tuscany is luxurious beaches, hotels, trendy discos and clear sea. Individual tourism, wine and gastronomic tours are especially developed here. In addition, you can relax on the coast of the Tuscan Riviera. This is a prestigious expensive resort. People come here not only for recreation, but also to establish business relations, to rotate in the highest circles of society.

It is hot on the coast in summer, this is due to the fact that from the north the Apuan Alps protect from the northern winds and keep the heat coming from Africa. The beaches of the Riviera are sandy, wide, on some you can find up to 15 rows of sunbeds, differing only in color. Most of the beaches have a "blue flag" - a sign of clear water and cleanliness. Tuscan beaches are public, they are owned by cooperatives.

Therefore, the beaches are paid, the price includes sun loungers, umbrellas, as well as showers and changing cabins. The entrance fee to the beach can be from 3 to 35 euros. Also, on some beaches, an additional fee for 1 minute (1 euro) is taken for using the shower. Such a high cost is well justified. All beach infrastructure is at the highest level. In the northwest of the coast is the prestigious beach of Viareggio. This is a resort with a two-hundred-year history, distinguished by the highest infrastructure.

The beach offers a range of sports from sailing to bike rental. The resort is surrounded by a pine forest, a walk through which will delight you with coolness and clean air. The famous Pisa is only 20 km away. In Forte dei Marmi, in addition to the beach, you can visit the market where you can buy delicious Italian cheeses, wine, as well as high-quality clothes.

The resort of Marina di Carrara offers wide sandy beaches. In addition to all the famous water sports, children can visit the amusement park. Large cruise ferries are being built in Marina di Carrara. In the town itself, there are many ancient masterpieces of architecture - these are churches of the 17th-18th centuries. In the city of Carrara, the main square and the cathedral are lined with local marble.

The square itself is surrounded by ancient buildings, sculptures, churches built by famous Italian architects. It will be a pleasure to walk in the shade of narrow cobbled streets and have a cup of coffee in a cozy cafe. Nearby is the mountain terrace of Kampochocina, which offers wonderful views of the coast and the island of Corsica.

The historic capital of Pietrasanta has about 100 beautiful beaches surrounded by coniferous trees. It is a marble and bronze processing center. Between Viareggio and Pietrasanta lies the resort of Lido di Camaiore. You can come here with children. Thanks to the owners of the beach, it is in perfect condition. There are beautiful views, along the embankment along a special road that goes to the mountain range, you can ride a bike or rollerblade.

There are numerous boutiques, cafes and restaurants on the embankment. The town is surrounded by greenery and flowers of private villas. Enjoy local culinary delights: pasta tordellata, chocolate cake. Nearby is the medieval city of Lucca. In the southern part of the Tuscan coast, you can find more democratic beaches. In contrast to the luxury and corresponding cost of the resorts of the north, there are beaches owned by hotels. Visiting them is already included in the price.

Free beaches and holiday feature

There are also free beaches on the Riviera. Between Viareggio and Torre del Lago you will find la shiaggia Della Lecciona. This is a beach with clear water, surrounded by a pine forest. There are no water activities here. Beach 10 km from the town of Folonnica with quartz sand. Free beaches can also be found south of the Marina di Cecina resort.

Agritourism is a popular type of tourism. You will be offered to live on a farm, where you can have a great rest in a comfortable, cozy atmosphere and get an unforgettable experience. You will be introduced to the process of making local wine or other products. The hosts will offer cycling or horseback riding, as well as cooking lessons.

Where to stay?

Hotels on the Tuscan coast are varied in price and comfort, you can stay in a villa. Prices from 100 euros for a double room, if you book in advance, you can save. The Tuscan coast with its magnificent beaches and the highest infrastructure attracts travelers from all over the world. The cities of the province with ancient history will enrich your cultural baggage.

It is difficult to understand what is more popular in Tuscany - beautiful beaches or first-class wines. In any case, this is one of the most famous tourist areas in Europe, where monuments of ancient history are organically inscribed in picturesque landscapes. The resorts of the Tuscan Riviera or Versilia are considered prestigious and expensive, offering, first of all, an individual holiday for wealthy tourists. Luxurious hotels, lush vegetation, many discos, bars and restaurants. People come here not just to relax, but also to join the "high society". The proximity of Versilia to the sights of Tuscany and such an artistic center as Florence, give the resort even greater significance.

How to get there and transport

In Tuscany, as well as everywhere in Italy, a well-developed network of bus and railways. But those who have their own vehicles will still get a separate pleasure. Landscapes of Tuscany have long become world famous: vineyards, abbeys, pines and cypresses are replaced by sunflowers and poppies. All roads are well-surfaced, even in the wilderness you will not find a broken track. Hence the advice: of course, moving along motorways is faster and, at times, more comfortable, but all the beauty of Tuscany can only be seen on ordinary roads.

Italy: test of 11 difficult questions. Try to answer correctly 11/11:

Tuscany Hotels

Local hotels are distinguished by their refined style, high cost and elegance. Most of them are located at some distance from the sea along the promenade. There are options for relaxing by the sea with accommodation in villas, estates or castles.

A popular type of accommodation in Tuscany today is agritourism. Tourists stay at a farm or farm, where, in addition to a pool, air conditioning, silence and beautiful views, they are treated to their own olive oil, cheese and wine. In between culinary delights, agritourists can go to Siena, Florence or the sea.

Discos (the largest are La Bussola in Viareggio and La Capannina dei Franceschi), nightclubs, disco bars. Every February, Viareggio hosts a carnival on a scale not inferior to that of Venice.

The main resorts of the Tuscan Riviera

On the northern coast of Tuscany, Italians themselves usually relax, coming here from other provinces. In the resorts from Viareggio to Marina di Carrara, there are well-maintained crowded beaches that differ from each other only in the color of sunbeds and umbrellas.

The Maremma region is a state-protected nature reserve. On its territory there are, perhaps, the most sparsely populated beaches in Italy. Access to them is limited, especially during the season, and many of them are open only a few days a week.

Punta Ala is one of the most elite seaside resorts in the Tyrrhenian Sea. He owes his fame to the local yacht club. Follonica is attractive for lovers of a relaxing holiday on the sea coast. Clean sand and sloping shores are favorable for families with children.

Castiglione della Pescaia is a modern resort built on the site of an ancient fishing village. It has a well-equipped beach, developed infrastructure and popular water sports. You can also go horseback riding or cycling through the surrounding dunes and pine forests.

Previously, Monte Argentario was a rocky island covered with dense Mediterranean vegetation. Today it is connected to the land by two sandy isthmuses, between which there is a lagoon protected by the International Wildlife Fund. The largest city on the island is Porto Santo Stefano, located on wide terraces descending to a picturesque bay. Another famous resort is Porto Ercole. Small beaches are also hidden among the high coastal cliffs of the island, some of which can only be reached by boat.

The beaches in Tuscany are quite spacious and sandy. All along the coast they are public and are leased from special cooperatives. Guests pay an entrance fee and use umbrellas, sun loungers, sun loungers, showers, changing cabins, and can also sit in any of the many bars.

Boats depart regularly from the harbors of Porto Santo Stefano to the islets of Giglio and Giannutri. These resorts primarily attract divers, although there are several small sandy beaches on Giglio. There are only two beaches on the island of Giannutri, but numerous grottoes are located along the entire coast.

Tuscan Riviera

The Versilia region in northern Tuscany is known for its 20 km long sandy beaches. Local resorts are considered prestigious and expensive, offering, first of all, individual rest for wealthy tourists.

The center of cultural and social life is Viareggio, stretching along the fashionable promenade with boutiques, bars and restaurants. Lido di Camaiore is good for its democracy and simplicity. And on Forte dei Marmi, which strikes with silence and elegance, most of all Italian celebrities have a rest.

So, after reading a thousand and one reviews, reviewing a lot of photos, you decided to go to Tuscany. Where to look for free beaches? What to do in the evening and where to go for a walk? That's what we'll talk about.

Impatient vacationers start swimming and sunbathing in Tuscany in early May, and finish only at the end of September. During this period, the water temperature in the Tyrrhenian Sea is ideal for swimming (26-28 ° C), which explains the influx of tourists.

What you need to know about Tuscan beaches?

During the season, the beaches of Tuscany are expensive. Since October, the entry price has been significantly reduced. By paying the entrance you get sun loungers, a parasol, access to a shower and a changing cabin. On many beaches, you will have to pay extra for hot water in the shower, the fee is 1 EUR per minute. So think about it, maybe hardening is not so bad?

The International Foundation for Environmental Education has awarded 16 Tuscan beaches with Blue Flags. This sign is something like an Oscar for the beaches. "Blue flag for quality" give for clear water, clean sand, a convenient pier and good tourist service. Beaches awarded this award San Vincenzo, Forte dei Marmi, Cecina, Rosignano, Camaiore and a few more.

Exquisite Versilia: everything is fine, but not cheap

Tuscan Riviera (Versilia) - a place where the powers that be rest. Lido di Camaiore, Forte dei Marmi, Marina di Pietrasanta, Viareggio- luxurious beaches requiring luxurious expenses. But all costs are well justified.

The best beaches of Tuscany (and the territories adjacent to them;)) give their guests clean sand, perfect service and a lot of entertainment:

  • elite yacht club in Punta Alla;

  • diving;
  • water skiing;
  • hang gliding;
  • surfing;
  • scooters;
  • night clubs;
  • galleries;
  • walks through the pine forest;

  • golf course;
  • bike paths;
  • tennis courts;
  • horseback riding.

Viareggio- the largest Tuscan resort town on the coast of Versilia. It is surrounded by pine forests, so a week's rest here can be equated to a month in a sanatorium.

About local shops and boutiques, reviews are diametrically opposed. Someone admires novelties from Italian designers, and someone notes only 2-3 good stores. In general, if you are advised to buy in one of Viareggio's outlets, ask the adviser for the exact address of the store, it's more reliable.

And the prices here are aggressive.: even for 35 EUR per day you can not find a place on the beach. But the nearby hotel provides its guests with discounts: a day on the beach - 18 EUR (the price includes an umbrella and 2 sun loungers).

IN Forte dei Marmi Best to go Wednesday or Sunday. Then you will be pleased not only with outlandish vegetation and a sandy beach, but also with an excellent market. From 8.00 to 14.00 here you can buy homemade cheeses and wines, souvenirs and ... high quality Italian clothes! On weekends, there is also an antique market.

When you get tired of splashing in the sea, you can spend a couple of hours reviewing the local Museum of Caricature and Satire. open air theatre, marble warehouse, Villa Puccini- not a single beach, as they say.

Olga (27 years old, Kyiv):

“Looking at pictures on the Internet, we decided to stop by Viareggio for a day. We were afraid that the beach would be too expensive, but we were lucky: the entrance cost only 3 EUR. If you take a place with an umbrella - then 10, but we decided to save money and sunbathe .. At the entrance we were given a key to a booth where you can leave valuables and change clothes. We are somehow used to the fact that various souvenirs are sold on the beaches. I could not resist here either: I bought a couple of bracelets. But to have a massage right on the shore… Tuscany knows how to surprise!”.

Lilia (41 years old, Novosibirsk):

“We traveled with two children, we chose a beach on the coast of Viareggio. Immediately bought a subscription for the entire holiday. This is very profitable: if you pay for the entrance every day, it will be much more expensive. Finally, I was calm for the children: the entry into the sea is very long, you can literally walk on the water. More than 500 meters the water level remains "waist-high". The only negative is that the animation is often only in Italian. Our offspring don't speak English very well either, so they stayed away all the time."

Elba Island: on the ferry to "little Sardinia"!

There are over 130 beaches on this island! Beaches are suitable for couples with children La Biodola, Fetovaia and Lacona, because there is a smooth descent, there are attractions. For divers, Elba is generally a real attraction, because such underwater "gardens" are really a rarity.

Where to go in Tuscany?

A dam connects the seaside town Orbetello with the mainland. The beaches here are of average quality, the coast and the bottom are strewn with pebbles. But the lagoon itself is a protected area, because not only tourists, but also migratory birds like to relax here. Orbetello has many shops, delicious cuisine, a majestic cathedral and a lonely stone mill on the water - everything you need to feel like a complete traveler after a week spent on the beaches.

By train you can reach Rosignano. This is the only one in Europe, the so-called "white beach". The sand here is white, like in the Caribbean. It became so thanks to the work of the soda plant. The plant has existed here for many years and does not cause any damage to the environment.

They enjoy no less fame. Here you will find the purest golden sand, comfortable sun loungers and parasols. Most of the beaches in Rimini are paid, but they are much cheaper than in Tuscany. In addition, there are many outlets and shops where you can buy crazy things at a discount.

Not so long ago, a small resort town appeared on the shores of the Adriatic Sea - Lido di Jesolo. People come here to take a break from the metropolis, soak up the sun and swim in the warm sea. Read more about the beaches of Lido di Jesolo.

Budget beach holiday in Tuscany: where to look for it?

Free beaches in Italy are less common than good roads in Russia. Although sometimes free sites come across on paid beaches. Some tourists solve the problem even more simply: they sit on the rocks nearby.

And the smartest googled in advance, found this review, made notes on Google maps and now they have a rest at no extra cost. Because below is a list of beaches for which you do not have to pay for entry.

List of free beaches in Tuscany:

La Spiaggia della Lecciona

This beach lurks between Viareggio and Torre del Lago. Pine park, sand, sea - that's the whole list of available entertainment.

10 km south of the town of Folonnica there is a small beach Cala Violina with quartz sand.

Buca delle fate

It is difficult to get to this beach, a map will definitely not hurt. The car will have to be abandoned on the road along which you were driving from Pollonia. Further - on foot through the forest. But the purest water and an amazing view of the island of Elba are worth it.

The beaches of Barcola

A range of beaches where everyone will find their place. Young parents will choose a safe area with small pebbles, middle-aged people will rush to the beach near the pine forest, teenagers will drag their "ancestors" to Topolini.

There are free beaches south of Marina di Cecina

The scheme is the same: we leave the car on the road and walk briskly through the forest.

Are you planning a holiday in Tuscany? First you need to choose a beach!

Thinking of hitting the Tuscan Riviera? Keep in mind, for Versilia, 15 rows of tightly packed sun loungers is the norm. There are no free beaches here, only a few hotels with their own beaches. The bottom is sandy and shallow.

Southern Tuscany is just made for an unassuming family holiday. On the beaches Livorno, Pisa, Grosseto convenient entrances for children, clean sea and low prices. Most hotels have their own beaches, and public areas of the coast are located nearby. Absolute leader here - San Vincenzo. Here you can not only swim and lie on the sand, but also spend your leisure time culturally (no matter how threatening it may sound). Evening walks along the main street or a pine grove, concerts of stars, constant entertainment events, sports grounds - the complete package!

Would you like to relax your mind and body? Smoke your ass and décolleté in the sun? nude beach Santa Maria near Forte dei Marmi is waiting for you.

Prefer wild areas? Keep heading for the beach. Its sandy shores are washed by the cleanest water in Italy. This corner is protected from the outside world by beautiful rocks and old pines. Once upon a time, salt was mined here. Since then, a medieval fortress has been preserved here. A great place for those who want to get unusual photos from Tuscany.

Maxim (34 years old, Dubna):

“Livorno was chosen based on the price / quality ratio. It's not as expensive here as in Versilia, but the entire infrastructure is at the level: there is where to go, where to stay, eat, etc. The beaches turned out to be clean and well-groomed, the rental prices are also reasonable: for two sunbeds and an umbrella 16-25 EUR, depending on the equipment of the beach and the location of these sunbeds. We spent a couple of days at the thermal centers - the procedures there perfectly tone us up. ”

Alexander (39 years old, Rostov-on-Don):

“We rested with my wife and son in Castiglione della Pescaia. Two paid beaches on the shore, everything else is free, come and lie down, no one will say a word. On 3 free kilometers, everyone, albeit compactly, can fit. True, towels, an umbrella from the sun and other attributes must be carried by ourselves every time.

Valentin (31 years old, St. Petersburg):

“During a vacation on the Tuscan Riviera, you can look at a nudist beach, go on a couple of excursions, arrange a “romantic” in a secluded bay. Enough impressions for another office year.”

And in a year you can visit Tuscany again. Still, no one has managed to see all the beaches in one trip.

Relax in style. And don't forget the towels!
