All about LAUDA Air:

The airline is another Austrian airline founded by Formula 1 driver Niki Lauda.

The airline was founded in 1979 and began operations in 1985. Initially, the airline provided charter flights and air taxi services. The airline received a license not only for domestic air transportation, but also for international routes. Already in 1989, the airline operated long-haul flights from Vienna to Melbourne and Sydney, with a stopover in Bangkok. Since 2000, LAUDA Air has merged with Austrian Airlines and has operated code-share flights with this airline since 2005. To date, LAUDA Air operates only charter flights for the Austrian Airlines Group.

  • The main activities of the airline are charter transportation of passengers and cargo.
  • The company's base airport is Vienna International Airport.

LAUDA Air is an active member of the international Star Alliance.

There has been one aircraft accident in the history of LAUDA Air. On May 26, 1991, a Boeing flying to Thailand crashed. 223 people died. According to official data, the cause of the accident was the inclusion of an uncontrolled reverse.

LAUDA Air fleet

The airline's fleet consists of Airbus A320-200 aircraft - 2 units, Boeing 737-700 - 1 unit, Boeing 737-800 - 7 units. An interesting fact is that LAUDA Air called its planes after world celebrities, so under the name LAUDA Air, aircraft named after Freddie Mercury, Frank Zapp, George Harrison, Kurt Cobain, Frida Kahlo and Ray Charles fly.

Lauda Air was founded in the late 70s of the last century. Since 1985, she began to operate her first charter flights, and also provided air taxi services. The main airport was Schwechat (Vienna). Two years later, Lauda Air received permission for regular flights, and even later - for international flights. The airline carried out flights to some cities in Africa, Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, was a member of the Austrian Airlines Group, and was also part of the well-known Star Alliance aviation alliance.

In 2000, Lauda Air was taken over by Austrian Airlines and operated as a division. The aircraft fleet of Lauda Air included aircraft brands such as Airbus and Boeing. The company named its ships after famous personalities (for example, there were planes of Frank Zappa, Frida Kahlo, etc.). But in 2006, as a result of the decision of the Austrian Airlines Group to decommission Airbus liners, the company ceased to carry out long-haul flights, and in 2013 it ceased operations altogether.

Lauda Air Luftfahrt GmbH, formerly Lauda Air, is a discontinued Austrian airline headquartered at Vienna International Airport in Schwechat. Owned by Austrian former Formula One world champion driver Niki Lauda for most of its existence, it was a subsidiary of Austrian Airlines and chartered to holiday destinations in Europe, North Africa, the Caribbean and Southeast Asia. On July 1, 2012, Lauda Air was officially merged with Austrian Airlines, and on April 6, 2013, Lauda Air ceased to exist. The new brand, which is now used for holiday flights on behalf of Austrian Airlines, is called "Austrian myHoliday".

May 26, 1991: A Boeing 767-300ER named after "Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart", Flight 004, crashes in Thailand shortly after takeoff from Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok as a result of an uncontrolled reverse operation, killing all 223 people on board, including members crew.

Additional Information:

Lauda Air was founded in April 1979 by former F1 world champion Niki Lauda and began operating in 1985, initially as a charter and air taxi service.

Lauda Air became a wholly owned subsidiary of Austrian Airlines in December 2000, with 35 employees as of March 2007. In 2005, flight operations were merged with Austrian Airlines and the Lauda Air label only dealt with charter flights within the Austrian Airlines group.

The Austrian Airlines group board meeting in November 2006 approved plans to replace Airbus' wide-body fleet with Boeing 767s and Boeing 777s by mid-2007. As a result of subsequent fleet cuts, Austrian Airlines suspended some long-haul services and, over the next year, Lauda Air withdrew from the long-haul charter market. This has led to a shift towards the short/medium haul market and the addition of Boeing 737-800s to most of the charter routes. Lauda Air also had an Italian subsidiary, Lauda Air S.p.A., which ended operations in 2007.

Lauda Air was officially merged into Austrian Airlines on 1 July 2012. All aircraft within the group were transferred to Austrian Airlines as of 1 July 2012 to be able to benefit from the Austrian Airlines structure. The Austrian Airlines Group continued to use the Lauda Air livery until the brand's demise to ensure the validity of the Lauda Air Operator's Certificate.

The Lauda Air brand was discontinued at the start of the summer schedule on March 31, 2013. The new brand, which is now used for holiday flights on behalf of Austrian Airlines, is called "Austrian myHoliday".
