Eindhoven - attractions and this Dutch city are not very close concepts to each other, if you compare it with Amsterdam or The Hague. Nevertheless, there is something to see and where to go here too. Perhaps you shouldn’t devote a whole day to Eindhoven, but you can definitely devote a couple of hours to it. I invite you to go with me to photo walk around the city and its attractions.

— Eindhoven has been known as a city since 1232, although the first mentions of it date back to the 8th century. Once upon a time, on the site of the modern city there were 170 wooden houses, and now more than 200 thousand people live here.

— High technology came to Eindhoven in 1891 with the opening of the well-known Philips company. Initially, the company produced only light bulbs, but over time the list of products was significantly expanded, and you yourself know this very well.

— Another world famous brand that was born in Eindhoven, DAF company. Giant trucks and compact trucks – all DAF.

— Among football fans, the city of Eindhoven is known as native to the PSV team. About a century ago, this football club was created as a team of Philips employees (Philips Sport Vereniging or Philips Sports Union), and today it is one of the most famous in the Netherlands and even in the world.

— Eindhoven not a typical Dutch town with canals, mills and gingerbread houses, although all this is still present in small proportions. Eindhoven - attractions in this city are mainly concentrated in the center, so you won't need to use public transport. But if you still need it, then know that bus station located next to railway station. Looking ahead, I will say that this is very convenient and typical for all Dutch cities. It was from here that my walk around the city began - a bus brought me to the railway station from the airport.

1. People running around Eindhoven Phileas express buses(Phileas) are modern vehicles that use a lot of fiberglass and a little aluminum in their production. The buses are very quiet and fast. They run on diesel or gas paired with nickel batteries. The front of the bus seems to be sending greetings from the future, wouldn’t you agree?


2. Eindhoven may have few canals and mills, but what it has as much as other cities in the Netherlands is bicycles. The photo shows bicycle parking near the train station. More precisely, one of the parking lots. In the Netherlands a cyclist has more rights than motorists and the infrastructure for riding bikes here is simply ideal.


3. In the evening, this sign probably looks very nice, but for so long, if you, like me, found yourself in the city in the morning, there is nothing to do in Eindhoven


4. Traditionally, in the city center you you will find many shops and boutiques. An unusual glass building is one of them. On the other side of the square there is another similar store, only larger (they will be lower).


5. This oblong building looks a lot like the entrance to the subway, which is what I took it for. The impression is enhanced by a working escalator located at the entrance. But it turned out that it leads to underground parking for bicycles. Quite expected, it seems to me =0)


6. The photo was taken on Sunday morning - people began to appear on the streets closer to 10. I love walking along deserted streets, which are usually crowded with people.


7. In the expensive Netherlands, unhealthy McDonald's can be a salvation for thrifty travelers. For example, breakfast, or rather a breakfast of black coffee and a morning burger with an egg, will cost you 2.95 euros.


8. There are almost more high-rise buildings in Eindhoven than there are old houses. In this regard, it is closer to Rotterdam than to Amsterdam or The Hague, not to mention such wonderful cities as Haarlem, Alkmaar or Delft. The skyscraper on the left is called Admirant and is considered tallest building in Eindhoven. Its height is 105 meters.


9. A walk through the center will inevitably lead you to St. Catherine's Church(Sint-Catharinakerk). Well, how could it be otherwise? It is very difficult to see these majestic towers from afar and not go to them. The temple is located at Kerkstraat 1.


10. Either a monument, or just an original installation - guess for yourself).


11. And here is the Church of St. Catherine nearby. It was built in 1861-1867. The architectural style is neo-Gothic, the architect is Peter Kuipers.

12. It is impossible to capture the church strictly in the center - the neighboring building is in the way. The temple is a three-nave basilica with two 73-meter towers, named after Mary and David.

14. I love visiting Catholic churches - the decoration, both external and internal, always delights me. Be sure to go inside the temple- you will not remain indifferent. On the day of my visit there was a Sunday mass, so I did not take photographs.

16. Parking for bicycles is literally everywhere. It’s just that no one leaves such big ones on the street - you won’t have time to blink an eye before they disappear)).


17. If you go from the church along Stratumseind ​​street, it will lead to a small square with an unusual monument in the center.


18. Here I turned right (Oude Stadsgracht street) and soon came across this installation. Apparently, it has something to do with the building next to it. Its name indicates a clear affiliation with design.


19. The street will lead to Stadhuisplein. On the picture monument to those who fell during the Second World War(my guess).


20. I love dogs and bicycles, I have both, but no matter how hard I tried to make these two things friends, I couldn’t. My Labrador Byron doesn’t want to walk with me at all when I’m on a bike.))

22. And again the theme of bicycles - these are the brown paths with a special coating available in all cities of the Netherlands. On both sides of the road (!). Riding them on bikes is a pleasure.


23. I made a circle and again returned to the shopping center with unusual architecture at 18 Septemberplein.


24. The time had passed 10 o’clock, the sun began to warm up and people appeared on the streets. You don’t often see tourists here – whatever one may say, Eindhoven is not a tourist city.

26. Road signs will prevent you from getting lost.


27. The main surprise of the day is that the urinal is located right on the street, almost in the very center. By the way, it is installed near streets Stratumseind, which I spoke about above. It is considered the longest street with bars and pubs in Holland. If you find yourself in Eindhoven on Friday or Saturday, go to Stratumseind ​​in the evening - fun is guaranteed.

Eindhoven attractions - what else to see

If you want to explore the sights of Eindhoven more thoroughly or have more than 2-3 hours to spare, turn your attention to the city's museums. Some of them are of great interest.

DAF Museum

The museum is dedicated to the history of DAF. Recommended for visiting for car lovers and those who want to expand their horizons. Museum visitors will learn that the company produced not only trucks, but also cars and even racing cars. The exhibition presents both small copies of cars and full-size models.

Augustinian Church (Augustijnenkerk)

The three-nave church was built at the end of the 19th century in the neo-Gothic style. The church has one hexagonal tower, which is crowned by a 4-meter sculpture of Jesus Christ with arms wide open. The statue weighing 800 kilograms was made of wood and brass. The total height of the tower is 66 meters.

The church was built for the monks of the Augustinian Order from the nearby Mariënhage monastery.

If possible, go inside the church to admire the magnificent stained glass windows, many of which were donated to the church by wealthy residents of Eindhoven.

This attraction has gained fame as “the most left-wing museum in Europe.” The largest collection of avant-garde artist El Lissitzky, as well as other authors, is presented here. The museum regularly hosts exhibitions of contemporary artists.

The attraction is located in a compact red brick building, visually reminiscent of a military cruiser. White and red colors were used to decorate the interior. The exhibition is quite large; a suspended car with a bed is of great interest. There are several ways to get from the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam, to Eindhoven. The easiest and most comfortable way is to rent a car. A serious argument in favor of this method of travel is free roads.

Travel by car

From Amsterdam you can get to Eindhoven along the A2 highway - this is a typical highway, with several lanes of cars moving in each direction. What is typical is that there are no traffic jams on the road, so you can get to your destination quickly and without hassle.

A little history

Complex Evolion

One of the most remarkable places in Eindhoven is the original architectural complex of Evolion. In shape it resembles a huge snow-white plate. Nearby there is a picturesque pond. Previously, several scientific and technical museums were located within the walls of the complex. Today it houses a huge conference center owned by the global electronics company Philips.

Van Abbemuseum

The Van Abbem Museum of Contemporary Art is very popular among art fans. Its exhibition includes about 3 thousand paintings and canvases by famous artists. Among them are works by Chagall, Lissitzky, Picasso, Van Gogh and many others. In one of the museum's exhibition halls you can see a large collection of unique sculptures, while others feature extraordinary art installations. There is also a small themed cinema within the museum.

Genneper Park

Genneper Park is a favorite place for children. On its territory there are several children's playgrounds with fun attractions and a fabulous interactive exhibition. In the center of the park stands a huge mammoth skeleton. Nearby is the old Watermill from the Middle Ages. Tourists are attracted by the picturesque landscapes of the park - mirror ponds with fragrant magnolias, romantic bridges, greenhouses, shady alleys, fancy fountains and numerous Renaissance buildings.

City Park

An excellent place for walking and relaxing is the central city park of Eindhoven. On its territory there are several fantastic gardens, rose gardens, flower beds dotted with Dutch tulips, a charming lake, and ancient bridges.

To get to Eindhoven, just go to Amsterdam and change trains. Ticket price is about 33 euros. Several dozen trains depart daily from the city's railway station to different points of the country. In the vicinity of Eindhoven there is a large airport serving a huge number of domestic and international flights. Public transport is represented by numerous bus routes. Unlike other Dutch cities, Eindhoven has no metro stations or tram networks.
