The exact time of the appearance of this amazing natural monument has not yet been clarified; for some reason, scientists stubbornly ignore it as not of particular interest to science. The meager data obtained during the first studies make it possible to slightly open the curtain of mystery, discard beautiful, but completely useless legends in this case, and with little certainty determine the age of the troughs within 50,000-70,000 years. Although there is reason to believe that it is greatly overestimated, most likely they are from 25,000 to 10,000 years old, and the time of occurrence should be considered the period in the history of the planet that came after the last glaciation.

This can be proved by the fact that in the period from the 10th to the 7th millennium BC, the mountain river Western Dagomys, or the Kuban, as it is also called, despite its small length, was the most full-flowing.

Its turbulent, unrestrained stream, rushing towards the Black Sea coast, has been carving voids in the soft rock on the way for thousands of years, composed mainly of limestone, sandstone, marl and clay mudstone. If you take a closer look at the parallel straight strips on a stone base, it becomes obvious that only a swift water pressure could wash out entire layers even from such pliable rocks. And if you pay attention to the upper furrows and how high they are from the surface of the river, it becomes clear that in ancient times its level was much higher than the current one.

Nature and geography

The Dagomys troughs, as mentioned above, are located on the Western Dagomys River, 21 km long, which flows into the Black Sea. The natural attraction, which is part of the Sochi National Park, is located approximately in the middle river course, between the village of the same name and Solokhaul.

The area is a low canyon, immersed in thickets of boxwood and laurel cherries, huge chestnut trees covered with ivy. In their shade, there are turned layers of soft sandstone and limestone, forming geometrically harmonious depressions and fonts, with wide partitions, similar to man-made troughs, from where their name came from.

Throughout their cascade, they are replaced by new depressions of a bizarre, and sometimes regular shape, fenced with low sides, appearing as a chain of stepped reservoirs, completely different from the previous ones. A truly unique spectacle that deserves close attention.

The appearance of this natural wealth attracts tens of thousands of tourists, according to preliminary estimates - at least 100 thousand tourists a year, they say that everyone visiting Sochi will never miss the Dagomys troughs. In appearance - mother nature created them specifically for swimming, the water is clean and crystal clear so much that every pebble at the bottom is visible.

But it should be noted, despite the view, the river that rushes its waters here remains mountainous, fed by melted snow and dozens of streams escaping from the depths to the surface. All this contributes to cleanliness, and also leaves the water icy even in hot summers. As a result, despite all the attractiveness, you should not devote too much time to swimming - it is better to divide it into several visits.

And the structure of the fonts, also called Lakes of Love, which is associated with many romantic places, and other local objects, such as impromptu pools, plums, cascades and dams, are attractive. Both adults and children want to dive into this water element from the top of some rocky ledge, located as high as possible. Yes, it seems funny, but you can also take a spectacular photo. Yes, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

1. Firstly, natural stone towers are often covered with moss, it grows a lot on stones along the coast, and moss absorbs moisture like a sponge, after which it becomes slippery, it is easy to lose balance and fall on it.
2. Secondly, no matter how soft sandstones, marls and limestones are, they remain a stone, and often with sharp edges, it is easy to get hurt about them if you forget about caution.
3. Thirdly, the river flowing through the Dagomys troughs is extremely shallow here, and looking at the transparent surface from a height, it seems deeper than it really is - all thanks to refraction.

After the bear, we are greeted by magnificent lakes located in small rocky baths, which are also called troughs. There are many troughs here, and where one ends, another begins. At the same time, they have a stepped shape and, as a rule, each subsequent one is located downstream of the river. Therefore, from one trough to another, the river flows in small waterfalls.

The bizarre form of Western Dagomys has been formed in these places for thousands of years. At first, these were rockfalls, as a result of which huge blocks came off the rocks and fell into the water. And then for thousands of years water undermined them, making them smooth, beautiful and appropriate.

The rocks surrounding the river are covered with a picturesque forest: chestnuts, boxwood, rhododendron, beech and many other trees grow here.

There is a small beach near the river, to which steps lead, so it will be quite easy to pass.

In addition to the trees surrounding the trough, there is something else. Or rather, someone: full of bathing people. For the most part, these are local residents, because vacationers, as a rule, do not have time to find out about such places during a two-week vacation. Due to the small suitability for excursions, the Dagomys troughs are not advertised at all among vacationers. Nevertheless, back to the bathers. If you do not like places where there are a lot of people, where young mothers with small and noisy children, then you better find another place. Because troughs are perhaps the best place for swimming in Sochi, and it is logical that there are a lot of people here.

In addition, gazebos and barbecues are rented. Unfortunately, the beauty of Sochi, they are. You have to pay to visit what nature has created. It is very easy to get to the Dagomys troughs on your own.

• If you are coming from Sochi, then buses 153, 155, 156c and 157 will suit you. All these buses go from the Marine Station, and the stop is called "Dagomys troughs"
• If you are traveling from Dagomys, then 145 is added to the above.
• If you are traveling from Adler, Khosta, Lazarevskaya or other places in these areas, then ... maybe the Dagomys troughs are not the best choice, but if you still want to, then first it’s better to get to Sochi or Dagomys by train / bus and catch a minibus there already.
• To get to the Dagomys troughs by your own car - the road is quite conducive to this.
• Don't have a car but don't want to mess with public transport? Taxi from Dagomys will take you in 10 minutes and 200-250 rubles.
• Theoretically, you can come here as part of an excursion, but such an excursion will probably be the most irrational in the whole of big Sochi. So not worth it.

• Surprisingly, for some reason, the locals call this place koryta, putting stress on the last syllable. The correct pronunciation is korYta. This word is basically used to designate rock baths suitable for swimming.
• The Dagomys troughs are one of the most popular river backwaters for swimming in Sochi. Therefore, you do not need to come here "just to see." Swimwear is a must!
• Students of local universities visit the Dagomys troughs for their study in terms of geology.
• It is difficult to say whether it is advisable to go here from other areas. For example, in Lazarevsky with the same success you can swim in the Crab Gorge, in Adler in the Psakho canyon, and in Khost there is, in principle, the main competitor of the Dagomys troughs - the Devil's Gate canyon with its lake
• Tea plantations of Solokh-aul are visible directly from the river.

It is authentically known that the lakes were formed several tens of thousands of years ago. And during this time they have not only not lost their uniqueness. On the contrary, they even became even more attractive.

Rest on the territory of the Dagomys troughs gives a lot of pleasure, fills with unique feelings and causes the most positive emotions. It is believed that even if you just touch the life-giving moisture with bare feet, a person will always be lucky in love.

Natural beauty

Peculiar baths are located in a small gorge, the slopes of which are decorated with boxwoods, laurel cherries and huge chestnuts, almost completely entwined with ivy. The river is mountainous, fed by melted snow and underwater springs.

By the way, that is why it is here, always quite cool, even on the hottest day. If you are not a fan of cold water procedures, it is better not to swim. You can just dip your feet in life-giving moisture, believe me, this will be more than enough.

At the same time, there are more than enough people who want to plunge into the amazing waters of the Dagomys troughs, especially at the height of the tourist season. Some vacationers come here just to have a good time in the bosom of beautiful nature, not yet completely spoiled by man.

The infrastructure here, by the way, is well developed. There are equipped places for recreation. You can rent a barbecue, skewers and sit in the gazebo. Naturally, all this is not free, but the prices are quite adequate. Sochi is not a cheap resort, and it is also very noisy. And here there is an opportunity in peace and quiet to have a great rest, escape from everyday worries. Away from noisy companies.

For those who are not particularly eager to cook barbecue with their own hands, I recommend visiting a local cafe. Very tasty, fragrant Dagomys tea is served there. By the way, it is grown on neighboring plantations. Huge selection of good local wines. And the cheese here is delicious, I have never tried this anywhere else.

Some tourists are attracted by the opportunity to dive into a natural font from a height. I would strongly advise against doing this. Firstly, the stones on the slopes are covered with moss, and the chances of slipping are very high. Well, if there are no consequences.

Secondly, from a height it may seem that the depth in the "troughs" is large enough and you can dive. Actually this is not true. Bathtubs are not deep, jumping from a height you risk at least getting hurt. Therefore, if you decide to swim, do not experiment with jumping. Just enter the water. So you will provide yourself with the most comfortable, and most importantly, safe rest.

How to get there by car

It will not be difficult to get to the Dagomys troughs by your own car. About 10 kilometers from the center of Dagomys. You need to move from the village in the direction of Solokh-Aula. It is unlikely that you will be able to miss the entrance to the territory of the "Lakes of Love". There is a pointer in the form of a large wooden bear, beautifully holding in its paws a “tablet” - “Trough”.

There is an opportunity to get here by bus both from Dagomys and from Sochi. In the first case, at the bus station, take bus 145 or 146, get off at the Nor-Luys Village stop.

Bus number 154 goes here from the Sochi bus station, but it runs much less often than from Dagomys. And yes, it will take a lot more time. In any case, the trip here is worth both the money spent and the time. You will definitely not get such impressions anywhere else.
