On Saturday afternoon, December 6, 1997, a huge An-124-100 Ruslan military transport aircraft took off from the local Irkutsk-2 airfield, loaded with 2 Cy-27UBK fighters, which are assembled at the city’s aircraft factory, and they had to be transported under a contract to Vietnam.

The plane was supposed to make a flight through Vladivostok to Cam Ranh (Vietnam). In a matter of seconds after the giant took off, three out of four engines broke down at Ruslan: first, the first and third failed, then the second. It was not possible to restart the engines, and on one engine the plane simply rolled over and began to fall like a stone into the village.

The exact cause of the crash is still unknown.

The runway of the experimental airport Irkutsk-2 is located within the city limits. The village (microdistrict) of aircraft manufacturers has long been accustomed to the fact that planes fly low over their heads.

The ship's commander is trying to drag the plane to a non-residential area, to protect the people who stayed at home on the day off. But this is impossible due to the overload of Ruslan with fighters, the total mass of which is forty tons.

Those who survived the plane's impact were now fighting for their lives to get out of the fire. Someone even jumped from the fifth floor. The shock wave was so strong that it knocked out windows in houses within a radius of one kilometer. Fuel also hit the orphanage, the wiring caught fire, three children could not be saved.

Because it was a day off, a group of guys were in the pool, some of the children were at a concert in the house of culture. Who knows what happened, be it a weekday - perhaps there were much more victims.

Almost a few minutes later, rescue services are at the scene of the incident, the territory is cordoned off, people are evacuated from nearby houses, they provide assistance to the victims, and put out fires. There is no time to deploy heavy equipment, firefighters use ordinary light ladders to save at least someone from the fire. Many people ran out in a panic to the balcony, to the very epicenter of the fiery "tornado", 27 people were saved.

Rescue work was underway at the crash site, not only firefighters and ambulances, but also combat and emergency rescue services of Russia, cadets of the Higher School of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Irkutsk were involved. And a few hours after the crash of the An-124 Ruslan, a task force arrives in Irkutsk with the head of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, Sergei Shaigu.

After 12 hours, they finally managed to bring down the flames, and by the morning of the 7th, the fire was practically under control, mostly smoke remained, and separate ceilings of houses and remnants of unburned fuel periodically flared up. Those who managed to escape were mostly residents of the house, whose windows faced the opposite side from the fiery whirlwind. The tail of the aircraft, which was practically undamaged and leaned against the building of house number 120, posed a threat to the rescue services. On the same day, they decided to drop it on the ground.

Rescue work lasted four days and did not stop for a minute, although by the end of the operation it was clear that there were no longer living people under the melted remains of the houses.

The children from the orphanage, who were taken out almost half-naked into the street in a thirty-degree frost, were helped by residents of nearby houses. They dressed, fed, warmed, left for the night.

Consequences of the tragedy

The affected houses were completely demolished, and in 1999 the Church of the Nativity of Christ was built on the site of the disaster. This terrible plane crash took the lives of more than seventy people, eight of them were the crew of the aircraft, fifteen were passengers, the rest of the dead were on the ground, including fourteen children. More than seven dozen families were left homeless.

Investigation

Until now, the causes of the disaster are not known, and it is not clear who is to blame. Two recorders burned down in a terrible fire, the team's conversations could not be restored, and what was removed was of no value. The last seconds of the crew are shrouded in mystery. However, at that distant time, a special commission was assembled to investigate the incident.

The officially accepted version of the tragedy is the failure of 3 engines. But it was not possible to find out the reason for this. They tried to clarify the situation experimentally, drawing conclusions from known facts and collecting information from the scene. One of the versions is an overload of the vessel. Someone sins on the engines themselves, which were manufactured at Motor Sich OJSC in Ukraine. Someone suggested that the surge of the SU was caused by low-quality fuel, which contained a large amount of water, as a result of which ice formed, which clogged the fuel filters.

There is a version, which was voiced in an interview with Moskovsky Komsomolets, that the engine failure occurred due to a radio call on a Chinese phone made from the aircraft. The ship's electronics failed, and the consequences were irreversible.

An-124 "Ruslan" is a Soviet heavy transport aircraft, the largest and most lifting serial aircraft in the world.

The board with the number RA-82005 was released in 1986, belonged to the 556th military transport regiment (Seshcha, Bryansk region). On that day, Ruslan took off on the route Irkutsk-Vladivostok-Vietnam. In its cargo compartment were two new Su-27 fighters with a total weight of forty tons, assembled by a local aircraft factory. The fighters were bought by Vietnam for $30 million each.

There were 23 people on board, including eight crew members. The commander is a lieutenant colonel. The transporter was filled with 140 tons of fuel. Shortly after takeoff, which took place at 14.40 local time,

the third, second and first engines failed one after another, after which it began to fall.

An attempt by commander Vladimir Fedorov to keep the plane in level flight on one engine was unsuccessful, and the car, having entered the right bank, fell on residential buildings in the Aviastroiteley microdistrict and completely collapsed. The fall fell on house 45 on Grazhdanskaya Street, while house 120 on Peace Street was hit. In addition, the debris touched the building of the orphanage, two of his pupils died while in the shower.

In total, 72 people died in the crash, including everyone on board. Among them - 14 children. More than 79 families were left homeless.

Surreal footage from the crash site spread all over the country that day: destroyed houses, smoke, aircraft wreckage and the giant tail of Ruslan, resting on a brick five-story building.

A large amount of fuel, which immediately ignited after the impact, led to serious consequences. “He was refueled“ under the cork ”, he had to fly far. The Ruslan disaster in Irkutsk has become one of the largest in the history of modern Russia and the largest in terms of the scale of destruction and casualties with this type of aircraft.

The first major plane crash of 2017, which occurred on the morning of January 16 near Bishkek, was not the most typical. Most of the victims this time were not passengers and crew members, but residents.

The Boeing 747 transport aircraft of the Turkish company ACT crashed while landing at the Kyrgyz airport Manas. The liner fell on the village of Dacha-Suu, located 1.5-2 km from the airport runway.

The unwritten law of pilots says that the crew must take the plane away from residential areas, even if such a maneuver can cost the lives of the pilots themselves.

It's just that sometimes it's impossible to do so. During takeoff and landing, the catastrophic situation develops so quickly that there is simply no time left to take any measures.

Despite the fact that a disaster scenario similar to the one near Bishkek is not the most common, there are many tragic cases of this kind.

1992 Freight Boeing 747 crashed into residential complex in Amsterdam

On October 4, 1992, a Boeing 747-258F-SCD El Al cargo aircraft was flying LY 1862 on the New York-Amsterdam-Tel Aviv route. Six minutes after takeoff from Amsterdam airport, two right engines failed. The pilots turned the plane around and tried to land it at Amsterdam Airport, but the liner capsized and crashed on the Grunewen residential complex in the suburb of Bijlmer.

The liner crashed into the 6th floor of an 11-story residential building, destroying 31 apartments. A total of 43 people died, 39 of whom were residents of the destroyed building. In addition, 26 people on the ground received injuries of varying severity.

The version of the attack, which was considered initially, was not confirmed. 1996 An-32 plane crashed into a crowded market in Kinshasa

January 8, 1996 in the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (at that time called Zaire) Kinshasa, the largest disaster in terms of the number of victims on earth occurred.

The Russian An-32B cargo plane of the Moscow Airways airline was making a cargo flight from Kinshasa to Cahemba.

The aircraft began its takeoff run, reached its design takeoff speed, but could not take off from the ground. The actions of the crew to stop the takeoff did not prevent the aircraft from overrunning the runway and the airport.

Near the airport there was a market filled with people. The plane flew into the crowd, raced through the shopping arcade for about 240 meters and caught fire from a collision with market buildings.

The bodies of the dead were so mutilated that only 66 people could be identified. The unidentified victims were buried in a mass grave.

The Russian investigating authorities found that the flights of International Air Lines were carried out with significant violations, which led to the ban on the company's activities on January 4, 1996 by the commission of the Moscow Regional Air Transport Administration due to poor-quality aircraft maintenance. However, the company illegally continued its activities until the disaster in Kinshasa.

The cause of the disaster, according to investigators, was the flight with a takeoff weight exceeding the maximum allowable. According to calculations, the takeoff weight of the aircraft during takeoff was 29,200-34,000 kg, that is, it exceeded the maximum allowable 27,000 kg.

On July 25, 2000, Air France's Concorde supersonic passenger airliner operated charter flight AFR 4590 on the Paris-New York route.

However, the failure of another engine actually deprived the pilots of the opportunity to fly the liner. Interestingly, the supersonic Concorde died just 5 km from the place where another supersonic passenger liner, the Tu-144, crashed during a demonstration flight in 1973.

On June 3, 1973, during a demonstration flight as part of the Le Bourget air show, the Tu-144 suddenly entered a dive, and a few seconds later disintegrated in the air and fell on the residential areas of the town of Goussainville located below it.

Exactly 20 years have passed since the tragic crash of the An-124 aircraft on a residential building in Irkutsk. “After the fall, a terrible fire started,” continues Igor Utkin. - Tanks "Ruslan" were filled to the eyeballs, it's almost two railway tanks. From the impact, aviation fuel splashed out, the fire broke out instantly with great force. People who fell under the fiery wave died in a matter of seconds.

By the time the fire brigade arrived, the surviving people were rushing about on the balconies and in the open windows, it was clear that panic and fire were pushing them out, a few more minutes, and someone could jump out. Firefighters had to deploy light ladders and shoot people directly from the burning balconies.

“Of course, the situation was very difficult psychologically. The family of one of our employees lived in the forty-fifth house. At the time of the disaster, his younger brother was in the apartment, who was sitting at the table and doing his homework. We found him in this position in a burned-out apartment. The boy did not have time to understand anything, even to jump up, ”says Igor Utkin.

“My family still lives in a hostel, the windows of which overlook the very place where the plane crashed,” recalls Natalia Bochkarnikova. That day I came home from work tired. I remember I saw a plane flying low through the window and even managed to shout to my son to move away from the window. Then everything was like a dream... I ran out into the yard, it was already full of people, the forty-fifth house was in some thick fog and fire, and from there burning people ran out to meet us. We placed them in our rooms, brought them to their senses, provided medical assistance. Until now, everything is in front of my eyes.

Extinguishing burning fuel and debris lasted more than a day and a half. All this time, firefighters were supported by residents of the area. Despite the double cordon of the catastrophe, the townspeople managed to bring tea and sandwiches to the rescuers.

“My friends and I wanted to help at least something,” says the Irkutsk citizen Andrey Nikolaev- Then we still didn’t know exactly what happened and what was burning, we just went to the glow. As a result, they went straight to the fire. Houses and cars parked nearby were on fire. Rescuers carried the wounded. It was terrible to see how the dead people were stacked in front of the school building, which was very close to the site of the tragedy. Help from us, of course, did not work, they simply did not let them in. A huge number of cadets, the fire service, and the police worked on the spot even without us. During the disaster and fire, 72 people died. Of these, 23 crew members and 49 Irkutsk residents, including 14 children. Witnesses say that on this day a wedding was planned in house No. 45. The newlyweds left just a few minutes before the plane crashed, but a large number of their guests remained in the apartment.

There were only a few children in Orphanage No. 1 at the time of the disaster. Someone went to the House of Children's Creativity, someone to the pool and the skating rink. Only three girls and their teacher remained in the fifth group, who brought her son Makar to the group 15 minutes before the tragedy. As the employees of the institution later recalled, the fire literally stole into the room, Makar flared up like a candle, and other children were burning.

At the same time, pupils from the orphanage Yana Potanina and Luda Shashkina were playing on the playground very close to the 45th house. The girls were missed only in the evening, when all the children from the orphanage were transferred to the 13th boarding school. The director of the orphanage, Galina Kryukova, and her staff wandered around the cordon for a long time, questioning the firefighters. At night, the woman was called for identification. The bodies of the girls were burned so badly that they shrunk to 70-80 centimeters.

Exactly five days later, 15-year-old Anya Zernis, who was injured in a group fire, died in an Irkutsk hospital. Makar Mileshko was taken by plane to Moscow, but it was not possible to save his life, he died in mid-January 1998.

The culprits have not been named.

The investigation into the causes of the accident raised many questions. It was not possible to unequivocally answer why Ruslan fell. During the fire, the "black boxes" were almost completely burned out and the information of the crew's negotiations could not be restored. It is known that the plane failed three engines at once, so the ship failed to rise into the air higher than 66 meters. Some experts believe that this happened due to excessive loading of the aircraft. The case file also contains a reference to possible problems with the D-18T engines, which were produced by the Ukrainian company Motor Sich OJSC. These units, apparently, had problems with gas-dynamic stability, especially at high angles of attack.

It is likely that the failure of the on-board computer could also be the cause of the fall of Ruslan.
