What to see in Yalta in one day, three days and a week. Resorts of Crimea: Big Yalta

The summer season is approaching, and many of you are already actively looking for vacation options. In this article, I want to tell you about one amazing city, which is easy to get into, pleasant to relax, and simply impossible to forget. This is Yalta. No wonder it is called the pearl of the Crimea. This city has become a real discovery for me. It clearly stands out from other Crimean cities.

And today I want to tell you why it is worth coming to this city if you want to see all the most interesting sights of Crimea in a short time.

Rest in Yalta: for whom this resort is suitable

I want to immediately turn to lovers of an economical beach holiday: guys, look for another resort for yourself. If you want to just lie down for 2 weeks on a sandy beach, choose Sudak or Evpatoria. It will cost you much less. In Yalta, you can and should enjoy other things.

Despite the fact that this city cannot boast of ancient and medieval antiquities, like in the 19th century, it was Yalta that became the center of the resort life of Crimea. Its excellent climatic conditions and picturesque nature attracted here many aristocrats and simply influential people, who in a short time built a whole ensemble of cultural heritage sites on the Yalta coast, and thereby left their mark on the history of not only the city, but also the peninsula as a whole.

By the way, a few words about the history of the city should be said separately.

The history of Yalta: from Taurus to a lady with a dog

It is assumed that the name of the city comes from the Greek word "yalos", which means "shore, coastal." An old legend says:

Many centuries ago, the Greeks went in search of new lands. The Black Sea met them unkindly, with storms and fogs (that's why they called it the Black Sea, again according to legend). For many days sailors wandered, not knowing where they were sailing. The ship ran out of fresh water and food. The team lost heart and dutifully waited for death. But one morning the fog cleared, and people saw the long-awaited shore and green-purple mountains.

- Yalos! Yialos! they shouted. Here, on fertile land, the Greeks founded a new settlement.

But archaeologists have not yet been able to find traces of a Greek settlement dating back to antiquity. But sanctuaries and remains of settlements were discovered taurus . It was the Taurians who were the most ancient inhabitants of the Yalta Valley. Perhaps they were the indigenous inhabitants of the Crimea, or perhaps they were representatives of the tribes that retreated to the Crimea from the Northern Black Sea region or from the Caucasus under the onslaught of the Scythians. However, the very word "tauri" is Greek and was originally the name of a mountain range in Asia Minor, the continuation of which the Greeks considered both the Caucasus and Crimean mountains. Then the local tribes were also named with the same word. The Greeks themselves called Crimea the "Peninsula of the Taurians" - Tauris.

Further, on these shores, the Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Genoese appear and disappear, replacing each other ... In 1475, the Turks became the owners of the southern coast of Crimea. Yalta was part of the province, which was in the personal possession of the Turkish Sultan.

In 1771, the first Russian troops arrived in Crimea under the command of A.V. Suvorov. In Yalta they built a military fort. By the time Crimea was annexed to Russia, Yalta was a tiny fishing settlement of 13 houses with a church and a mosque (so, for 13 houses - both a church and a mosque!)

In 1823, Count M.S. Vorontsov became the governor-general of the Novorossiysk Territory, which then included Crimea. In Yalta, he distributed 200 acres of land on the condition that the new owners would plant orchards and vineyards and actively engage in construction. The enterprising tsarist official Vorontsov created industrial wineries in Alupka and Massandra. At the direction of M.S. Vorontsov, roads were laid that connected the South Bank with Simferopol and through the Baydar Gates with Sevastopol, a seaport and a pier were built.

In 1838 Yalta received the status of a city. However, in the next four decades, Yalta still remains a provincial backwater. All that the surroundings of Yalta were in those days were tobacco and vineyards.

Everything changed dramatically in 1866, when, on the advice of Professor Botkin, who was the first to appreciate the outstanding climatic features of the place, not far from Yalta, in Livadia, Empress Maria Alexandrovna began to rest in the autumn months. In the 70s of the 19th century, rapid construction began in the city. This was facilitated by the fact that the royal family acquired neighboring Livadia. In 1873, the construction of the railway was finally completed, linking the Crimea with both capitals of the empire. After Livadia became the royal residence, Yalta quickly began to change. Following the titled persons, rich industrialists and merchants rushed to the Crimea. Yalta is becoming a fashionable resort with fashionable hotels, shops, restaurants, hospitals and dachas.

This is exactly the kind of Yalta that appears to us in A.P. Chekhov's story "The Lady with the Dog". Here, in Yalta, the last five years of A.P. Chekhov's life passed. Consumption did not allow him to live in a damp and cold climate. According to the project of the architect L.N. Shapovalov, he built a two-story house with a mezzanine, which was called “White Dacha”. The artist I. Levitan, the writer Bunin visited here, the troupe of the Moscow Art Theater headed by Stanislavsky and V. Nemirovich-Danchenko came in full force. In Yalta, Chekhov wrote nine stories and two plays: Three Sisters and The Cherry Orchard.

Around Yalta, the new owners of the lands erected luxurious palaces, villas, mansions, planted industrial gardens and vineyards, magnificent parks that today adorn the Crimean coast: Massandrovsky, Alupkinsky, Gurzufsky, Livadia and others.

In general, attentive readers have already understood from this historical digression: there is something to see in Yalta!

What to see in Yalta itself

Massandra

Another place where it is convenient and close to get out of Yalta. Tour of Massandra winery will delight all connoisseurs of Crimean wines. And a walk along park around the Massandra Palace will give pleasant memories and colorful photos to all tourists without exception.

We walked through this park on our first visit to the Crimea. Even then, in late autumn, this place looked very beautiful!

At the same time, we also visited the most beautiful Vorontsovsky (Alupka Palace). Unlike the Massandra Palace, which is more like a cozy country house, Vorontsov Palace looks like a medieval knight's castle .

The adjacent park is a worthy rival to the Nikitsky Botanical Garden. But if the Nikitsky Garden will amaze you with a riot of colors and a variety of vegetation, including exotic ones collected from almost all over the world, then Vorontsovsky Park looks more restrained and less artificial. And this, perhaps, is the genius of its creator - the famous gardener Karl Kebach. The park looks very well-groomed, but at the same time it is very natural, it organically fits into the complex terrain, as if created not by the hand of a master, but by nature itself.

To be honest, I liked walking around Vorontsovsky Park more. Somehow calmer in it, or something. In general, in terms of energy, he is closer to me)

bird home

I will only add that the TC "Yalta - all year round" has an evening excursion to this object. And there you will not only be told amazing facts about this place, but will also be treated to Crimean wine. It’s a pity we didn’t have time for this evening departure - we were in Bakhchisarai that day (which, of course, we were also satisfied with, and I told about this in the article)

The palace in the village of Livadia was the summer residence for the imperial family. Thanks to this palace, Yalta became the favorite resort city of the Empire. From here begins the Sunny Path - a favorite place for the emperor's walks.

The Italian style palace was built at the end of the 19th century. Alexander III died in this palace. Nicholas II came here with his family. And during World War II, the Livadia Palace became the venue for the famous Yalta Conference. In Soviet times, a sanatorium was opened on the territory of the palace. Only since 1993 a museum has been opened in the palace.

The cost of visiting the palace is 350 rubles. Tours run on time, as the group recruits. This was the reason that we did not visit the palace, but limited ourselves to an external examination and a walk in the park around it. It’s just that for this day we still had a planned climb to Ai-Petri ...

Ai-Petri

We did not have time to climb this mountain on the first passage through the Crimea. Then they flew at a gallop across Europe. But this time we got to it. I would like to write a separate article about this mountain - my impressions of it do not fit into a couple of paragraphs. Therefore, in this article I will simply say this - people, do not do it the way we do! On the same day, having visited the Nikitsky Botanical Garden and the Livadia Palace, they also swung at Ai-Petri. You need to set aside a separate day for this! It's worth it.

When going to Ai-Petri, take something from warm clothes - the wind turbine on the mountain blew off but!. And we were told that this is not a rare occurrence.

You can get to the top of Ai-Petri in different ways:

  • alone by car
  • by cable car from Miskhor
  • walking along hiking trails to the top

All of them have pluses and minuses... In short, wait for a separate post about Ai-Petri, friends!

Other sights of Yalta

Generally speaking, in Yalta there is also zoo , And dolphinarium , And Museum "Glade of fairy tales" . But, to be honest, their visit was not included in our plans. Firstly, I personally do not like animal shows, and there were no children with us. Zoos where animals are kept in cages don't really interest me either. And therefore I can’t write anything about these tourist sites.

But now I remembered how on our last evening in Yalta we went to an organ music concert in Church of the Holy Mother of God. The Catholic church at 25 Pushkinskaya Street was built in 1906 in the traditional Western European style. We noticed this building on the first day, when we walked along Pushkinskaya Street towards the embankment. We approached, read the sign, and saw a poster - once a week there is an organ concert in the temple. The ticket price is 350 rubles.

And also there, on Pushkinskaya street , I liked just walking, sitting in cozy cafes with a cup of aromatic coffee ...

Generally, Yalta is exactly the city where I would like to stay when I come to Crimea. Both the city itself and its environs are almost one continuous attraction. Therefore, this list - what is worth seeing in Yalta - can be continued indefinitely. And now, on the eve of the season, I plan to write a few more articles about interesting places in the vicinity of Yalta.

And happy travels!

Attractions

The Swallow's Nest is one of the most romantic and smallest castles in the world. Being similar to a medieval building, it has nothing to do with such a high-profile title. At the end of the 19th century, a retired general of the Russian-Turkish war received this place for his merits, where he built himself a small wooden house.

Later, it was repeatedly resold until it became the property of a German oilman. He wanted to see a building hovering over the sea at this place, reminiscent of the Belem tower or the Miramare villa near Trieste. This is how the now known "Swallow's Nest" appeared. A luxurious garden was laid out next to the house. Crimea is a zone with seismic activity. During a small earthquake, the section of the rock on which the castle garden was located collapsed into the sea.

Before the First World War, the castle was sold. It went through a period of abandonment, then a long restoration and strengthening. Currently, the building hosts various art exhibitions open to visitors. The castle remains one of the romantic places in the world. Despite its modest interior decoration, very small size, lack of special historical values, it attracts guests and is the hallmark of the Southern Crimea.

It owes its fame to its successful location on the edge of a steep cliff and the most picturesque landscape that surrounds it at any time of the year.

If you climb a little higher from the observation deck, you can see the Wish Tree, an original artifact for tourists. It is believed that if you put a coin in the chest, you will be haunted by desire and everything will be fine.

Pleasure boats from the Yalta embankment go to the Swallow's Nest.

General Pushkin - pleasure boat on the Swallow's Nest

Definitely worth a ride on a boat - from the sea offers an amazing view of Yalta, its embankment, sanatoriums, nature. The Swallow's Nest itself looks amazing from the sea.

Yalta - view from the sea

In May, lilacs bloom and the iris carnival takes place. In autumn, a chrysanthemum ball is held in the garden. In summer and autumn you can see a lot of roses here. The garden has a collection of cacti. There is a butterfly garden.

Entrance to the territory of the botanical garden 300 rubles. To see rare collections, you will have to pay extra.

You can just walk around the area all day. Many benches and trade pavilions with fast food.

This is not only one of the most beautiful park structures, but also a well-known operating research center and nursery for horticultural and ornamental crops.

On the territory of the garden you can find many small fountains and ponds in which beautiful fish swim.

To the left of the entrance is a feeding place for cats - there are quite a lot of them in the botanical garden. Cats fit quite harmoniously into the atmosphere of the garden.

The garden was founded in the 19th century and initially only fruit crops were grown in it. The need for its creation was dictated by the fact that the climate in Yalta and its environs is quite difficult for the survival of vegetation. Thanks to this garden, many fruit and berry and ornamental crops were bred that were suitable for these climatic conditions. As a result, varieties of apricot, fig, mulberry and other fruits appeared, which not only are not inferior to their counterparts from the black earth regions, but also win in terms of juiciness and taste.

Today, the garden contains plants from different parts of the world. It is always pleasant to spend time here, to wander between glades, tulips, roses, various cacti, in a bamboo grove, among different types of coniferous trees. Walking through the garden with a guide will take at least an hour and a half. But you can wander here much longer.

How to get there: Address: Crimea, Alupka, sh. Palace, 18

This palace is special among all that are on the south coast. It was built for Count Vorontsov. It took about 20 years to build it. Having visited the South Coast, it is impossible not to visit this man-made miracle.

Its interior decoration has largely been preserved, so it will be interesting to see it not only from the outside, but also inside. It is felt that its owner tried to make his house an indicator of well-being and comfort. There are about 150 rooms inside. Not all are accessible. But even those that you can see are interesting for their decoration, wall decoration, fireplaces, and furniture.

Its architecture fits perfectly into the surrounding landscape. It is said that the architect who designed it has never been here. From only saw drawings and photos of these places. Another master, who was present here throughout the construction, somewhat changed the original project.

The palace has a winter garden, streets imitating a medieval city. It combines several styles. The main material from which it is made is the local diabase stone. It is 2 times stronger than granite, but also more capricious in processing. For the construction and decoration of the palace, masters of various construction specialties were assembled. Today, the names of about 300 of them have been restored.

This waterfall is known not so much for the height and power of the water as for its beauty. But it is worth visiting it in spring or early summer, or in autumn when it is full of water. Those who come at the end of summer run the risk of being disappointed, as there will be little water and they will not get the proper impression. The waterfall is beautiful in winter too. In the cold season, people come here to look at the ice kingdom of many icicles, frozen spray. But this cold does not happen every winter.

It is located at an altitude of 8 km above Yalta. The height of the water fall from a steep cliff is 98 meters. It is also called "hanging water".
In spring, the waterfall is visible even from Yalta. The sound of falling water carries far. Falling, streams of water fall on protruding stones in the rock, which gives it a special look. The water in it is the purest. Falling, it enters the Mogabinsky reservoir, from where Yalta receives its water supply.
In the rock, which is located on the path of the waterfall, there is a small observation deck with a sculpture of an eagle taking off. If you go a little lower than the waterfall, then by the river you can see the remains of the destroyed Greek-Byzantine fortress.
The road to the waterfall is landscaped and spacious enough for walks, which in themselves will be a pleasure.

Massandra Palace

How to get there: Address: Crimea, Yalta city district, Massandra village, Simferopol highway, 13

GPS coordinates for navigator: Latitude 44°31′02″ / Longitude 34°12′10″

In March 1902, the construction of the Massandra Palace, in the form in which it has survived to this day, was completed. Exact calculations were made of how much money was spent on its construction - 978,443 rubles 42 kopecks. It was built at the expense of the treasury, and not from imperial money.

The architect who made his project and supervised the construction, Messmacher wrote: “... work on both the external and internal decoration of the palace ... was done with such diligence, so solidly and conscientiously that, as I hoped, he could well justify what was rendered to me by the Augustus the customer's gracious trust". And it was the pure truth.

But, ironically, the palace has never been a place for long-term residence of anyone.

One of the most beautiful and worthy sights of Crimea, the Massandra Palace has a rather sad history. The castle was based on the styles of the Renaissance and the Middle Ages. They fit perfectly into the landscape of the Crimean mountains.

Count Vorontsov was the first to build the palace. When the work was in full swing, the architect who was involved in the construction suddenly died of a heart attack. But the work continued. However, while the castle was still unfinished, the owner himself, Vorontsov, died.

After the death of Vorontsov, the estate passed to his wife, who almost immediately sold it to Countess Shuvalova.

After that, it was bought by Alexander III in order to develop industrial viticulture. The new owner liked the palace and ordered the architect M.E. Messmacher to complete it. Under his leadership, the palace was completed, terraces and balconies were added, many elements of the outer facade were updated and changed. Heating was provided, hot and cold water was installed, sewerage was established and the plumbing was improved.
Much was planned, but in view of the death of Alexander III, an order was received from his heir Nicholas III to complete construction in a short time, reducing the number of projects.

Nicholas II did not really like Massandra. He visited this palace only sometimes during the day, and spent all the time in Livadia.
The palace was completed. It was joined by two picturesque towers, terraces, the interior decoration corresponded to modern tastes and traditions.
The palace in Massandra has become a real "swan song" of the architect. He put his talent, experience, great knowledge in the history of art into it.
For decoration, complex technologies of carving and modeling, wood burning were used, with which whole panels were made, walls and doors were painted with paints, then fixed in a special way.

Well-known art organizations involved in decorating the palaces of St. Petersburg were involved in the decoration.

An engine room was built to service the palace. There was a park all around. It was supplemented with a large number of sculptures. Only 6 of them have survived to this day.
Today, much of what was, is not preserved. However, even by what it is, one can judge how much strength and artistic talent, rare materials and technologies were used in its construction.
