Cottbus- a green and pretty town on the river Spree. Remember the movie "Goodbye, Lenin!", where the main character was constantly looking for Spreewald cucumbers for his mother? So Cottbus is located just on the banks of this very river Spree.

Cottbus - officially bilingual city. All tablets and names are written in two languages: German and Lusatian (Sorbian). The city has a very rich history and the townspeople treat it with care.

1.2. The decline and prosperity of Cottbus

Unfortunately, the prosperity of the city is over due to plague epidemics, terrible fires and a ten-year occupation during the Thirty Years' War that swept across Europe (from 1618 to 1648). The city was almost completely destroyed. Need and poverty prevailed everywhere.

Cottbus "recovered" only by the beginning of the 18th century, when the French Huguenots came and created their colony on these lands. They began to create hitherto unknown productions: sericulture and tobacco growing, as well as the textile industry. Cottbus shawls were known in Denmark, Sweden, Alsace and in America. (I wonder if the townspeople themselves know about the role played by their city in the fashion world of the 18th century?)

In 1815, after the Congress of Vienna, Cottbus moved into the possession of Prussia. Then a new stage of city prosperity began: rapid industrialization (textile industry and lignite mining), as well as the creation of local governments.

Economic growth continued until before World War I. Then there was terrible inflation and famine.

1.3. The Second World War

With the advent of the National Socialists and start of World War II, Cottbus has regained its former grandeur, on a national scale. It produced heavy weapons for the Wehrmacht until 1945.

Autumn 1940 residents of Cottbus survived the first airstrikes. The city was strong destroyed during the war. In February 1945, about 4,000 high-explosive bombs were dropped on the city by American troops. April 22, 1945 after fierce fighting Soviet troops occupied the city (for those who are interested, read about the Cottbus-Potsdam operation).

1.4. East Germany. GDR and FRG

In 1949 begins GDR era.

During the GDR, Cottbus was of key importance: city since 1957 becomes an important supplier of coal and energy. Construction, textile, furniture industry, as well as the agricultural industry are the main economic component of the city.

After reunification with the FRG, Cottbus, unfortunately, lost ground. Privatization also did not pass him by. And only after the city created major technical university in 1991 the situation has improved slightly. Although most of the city is still abandoned and the old Soviet buildings rise sadly against the backdrop of the urban landscape. But I didn't really want to show them to you, so I took pictures only the historic city center.

[By the way, the Brandenburg University of Technology is the youngest university in Germany. ]

2. Useful information about Cottbus

2.1. Rhythm of life

People are friendly as well as in Germany as a whole. There are some peculiarities in terms of the German language: a pronounced dialect, but the townspeople try to speak literary German 🙂 Especially when they understand that you are a foreigner.

City not very big, so on Thursday, on the central square, the cafe where I sat closed at 18:00. My surprise knew no bounds. Still, I'm already used to the big and dynamic Hamburg with a population of more than 2 million people.
