Now no one can say for sure how he got to the shores of the Black Sea. The most common version is vague: in the early 1990s, it was bought and transported to Crimea by a Ukrainian businessman. Since then, a huge ship has been standing near Sudak, near Cape Meganom - like a prehistoric sea lizard that crawled out of the water onto land to die...

Tourists taking pictures against the backdrop of the Sudak ship are sure that the object of their attention is the same “Swallow” that the insidious Paratov lured Larisa in love with. In other words, if you believe the local legend, then Meganom has either the “Spartak” or the “Volodarsky” - these are the twin steamships that were filmed as the “Swallow” in the film “ Cruel romance" Built at the famous Nizhny Novgorod Sormovo shipyard in 1914, these ships were not brothers, but sisters - they received the names “Grand Duchess Tatyana Nikolaevna” and “Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna”, in honor of the emperor’s eldest daughters. “River Princesses” (as they were called) were intended to transport passengers on the Nizhny Novgorod - Astrakhan line and were distinguished by their large size (91.4 m in length), comfortable conditions and luxurious interior decoration. The ships had hairdressers, rooms for amateur photographers, baths, special cabins for newlyweds; When decorating the premises, polished Hungarian ash, mahogany, mirror glass, as well as the fashionable material anaglit - pressed English cardboard - were used. After the revolution, the ships were renamed. “Tatyana Nikolaevna” first became “Dobrynya Nikitich”, and then “Spartak”, “Olga Nikolaevna” turned into “Alyosha Popovich”, and a little later - into “Volodarsky”. In the early 1990s, having worked for a record period (most of their peers retired in the 1950s), the ships were decommissioned. They seemed to want to turn one of them into a floating museum, the other - to sell it to England for exotic voyages along the Thames. But good intentions remained just that, and the ships perished. For several years they stood near the Rostov embankment, then they were taken to the distant backwaters of the Don, near the city of Aksai, and there, already in the early 2000s, the ships burned down, and what was left of them was dismantled and sawed up...

If the steamships “Spartak” and “Volodarsky” who played the role of “Swallow” perished in the waters of the Don, what kind of ship is standing near Meganom? Experts on the river fleet claim that this is the passenger motor ship “Memory of Comrade Markin” - a ship that has an equally glorious history and an equally venerable age.

This ship is the last surviving representative of the first large series of river diesel screw-propelled passenger ships built in Russia from 1911 to 1917. There were 11 such ships in total. “Memory of Comrade Markin” was built at the Kolomna plant in 1912 and until 1919 bore the name “Bagration”.

Until 1990, it worked on passenger lines in the Volga basin, and after being decommissioned it ended up in Crimea. At one time, this ship was also distinguished by its comfort and rich interior decoration, but little has survived to this day: an antique piano and chandeliers, some decoration elements. But the life rafts and fire extinguisher, with the help of which it was possible to identify the ship (they were marked with the name of the ship - “Memory of Comrade Markin”), were not preserved.

The appearance of the ship also changed quite a lot during its stay in Crimea - the superstructure that the ship had “during life” is now hidden under the new one. In fact, new walls were built, and due to this, the volume of the interior spaces increased, and the width of the open decks decreased. In addition, concrete was pumped into the stern of the ship, under the weight of which the hull cracked and the stern sagged greatly. So this ninety-meter ship, once capable of accommodating 339 passengers and lifting 300 tons of cargo, will never be able to set sail again. Whether it will become a recreation center or a restaurant, as planned, is still an open question.

By the way

Be that as it may, the Sudak ship did appear in films - it recently played a cameo role in the film “Alien” (Russia, 2010). According to the plot of the film, a couple in love is hiding from their pursuers on this abandoned ship. If you believe the footage from the film, the ancient piano on the ship is still in working order - waking up in the morning, the naked heroine plays some kind of improvisation on it.

Speaking about shipping topics in cinema and especially in domestic cinema, one cannot ignore Eldar Ryazanov’s film “Cruel Romance”, released in 1984. The film is based on A. N. Ostrovsky's play "Dowry". Filming of the film took place in Kostroma and on the Kostroma reach.

in the background near the landing stage is the decorated steamship "Dostoevsky" - in the film it is "Saint Olga". The entire decor is reduced to the installation of a high chimney, typical of steamships of the late 19th - early 20th centuries.

here is one mistake, a very large one - the farewell to Olga Dmitrievna, who had just married a Georgian prince, Larisa’s older sister - the “Swallow” (Spartak) leaves the landing stage

and when the ship with the newlyweds moved away from the pier, Dostoevsky was already in the frame

the race begins between Swallow and St. Olga

This is already one of a series of forced blunders - the steamer "Spartak" worked on the passenger line Yaroslavl - Astrakhan

the brass and polished machine telegraph corresponds to the era and is set to the “Full harm” position, and the modern one, used for control, is in the “Stop” position

"Saint Olga" (Dostoevsky, project 737)

Larisa (actress Larisa Guzeeva, this film was her debut in the leading role - before that she starred in one of the episodes of the TV film “The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed”) speaks with Kuzmich (a steamship mechanic) via a speaking tube. But in the foreground the twisted cord of a modern intercom "climbed"

in the foreground is “Swallow”, behind it is “Saint Olga”

Overtaken. In principle, there is nothing surprising - “Spartak” has a car with a power of 1250 hp, and “Dostoevsky” has only 450. By the way, another “blunder” is connected with this - Paratov (N. Mikhalkov) when he showed Larisa the “Swallow” car , says that it replaces 500 horses. That is, the power of the car is 500 hp. - but in fact the power of the Spartak car is 2.5 times higher. Again - a forced "blunder" - in the early 80s there were already very few steamships on the Volga.

Karandyshev is trying to catch up with the "Swallow" on a boat. The tug "Samara" appears in the frame - this is a steam wheeled tug of post-war construction - project 732/733

According to one version, this is the Bystry tugboat. If so, the ship is alive, the steam power plant is preserved. In recent years, the ship has been converted into a double-decker pleasure steamer. Here is a shot with the participation of “Bystry” from the film “Chinese Service” (1999)

33 years ago, on November 23, 1983, the premiere of the feature film “Cruel Romance” took place in the USSR. The film, directed by Eldar Ryazanov and based on Alexander Ostrovsky’s play “The Dowry,” was released on the wide screen in 1984 and received audience recognition: the magazine “Soviet Screen,” based on an annual survey of readers, recognized it as “the best film of the year.” And Nikita Mikhalkov, who played the role of Sergei Paratov, a hereditary nobleman and owner of a shipping company, in the film, was chosen by the audience as actor of the year.

Mikhalkov was accompanied on the set by an equally stellar cast of the Soviet screen - Alisa Freindlikh, Andrei Myagkov, Georgy Burkov, Borislav Brondukov, Sergei Artsibashev and many others. Separately, it is worth saying that in one of the episodes, Sergei Arsentievich Seleznev, the current captain, was filmed in the role of a sailor beating the bell. And during the filming of the film, he worked as a second navigator on the ship "Spartak", which is filmed as "Swallow" in the film.

The soundtrack to the film delivers no less than the magnificent acting of the actors: “Shaggy bumblebee, for fragrant hops”, “And finally I will say”, “Under the caress of a plush blanket” - the compositions have become as classic as the film itself.

The action of the film takes place on the banks of the Volga in the fictional provincial town of Bryakhimov in 1877-1878. The opening credits of the film show the Volzhskaya embankment in Yaroslavl, and location shooting took place mainly on the Volga in Kostroma.

The artist Borisov created for the film surprisingly authentic interiors of merchant mansions, steamship cabins, and restaurants of the 19th century. And one of the main roles was played by two real ships: “Spartak”, who played the role of “Swallow”, and “Dostoevsky” in the role of “Saint Olga”.

The steamship "Spartak" was built in 1914 in Nizhny Novgorod (now) by order of the "Airplane" society and began work under the name "Grand Duchess Tatyana Nikolaevna", and later became "Dobrynya Nikitich". He worked for the Volga Shipping Company until July 1991, after which, together with the same type steamship Volodarsky, the ship was sent for modernization, which ended with both ships being looted and burned in the late 90s, leaving the remains near Rostov-on-Don. Don.

As for the steamship "Dostoevsky", which was built in 1956 in Hungary, it never appeared on the screens again. After being decommissioned in the early 90s, the ship was used as a recreation center on the Medveditsa River in the Kimry district of the Tver region. In 2014, the ship, abandoned since the early 2000s after a fire, was scrapped.
