Everything was going great until the World Financial Crisis hit the tourism industry, or rather, in 2011 it “rolled” to Europe with all its might, and the Jasmine Revolution added fuel to the fire. If in 2009 and 2010 the tourist statistics of Tunisia “stormed” the figure of 7,000,000 tourists a year, then in 2011 there were only 4,700,000 visitors to Tunisian resorts.

It was a monstrous decline, and the island of Djerba was one of the first to suffer - according to the results of the 2011 season, half of the hotels here were closed due to unprofitability. Or rather, they were not closed, but mothballed until better times. Part of it is still empty (note the article was written in 2016).

Many regular flights have been canceled and the situation has not yet returned to normal. If you decide not to buy a package tour, but to relax on Djerba on your own, then we will have to disappoint. Regular flights to the Djerba-Zarzis airport are now carried out only from France, you will have to fly with a transfer, for a very long time and most likely with a change of airport in Paris. In the case of a package tour, take a direct charter flight.

However, we hope for the best, because in many ways Djerba is superior to other resorts in Tunisia due to some of its features.

The island of Djerba is located in the Mediterranean Sea in the Gulf of Gabes. This is one of the most popular resorts in Tunisia. The area of the island is 514 sq. km., the population is 140 thousand people. It is believed that it was on Djerba that Odysseus was held captive by the nymph Calypso. Djerba is also known as the "island of the lotus eaters" because this plant is very common here. It was from Djerba that the formation of tourism in Tunisia began.

How to get to Djerba?

Djerba has its own airport, but there are no direct regular flights to the island. Only during the beach season charter flights fly to the island.

Also, the island can be reached with a transfer in Tunisia or in Monastir or by land (the island is connected to the mainland by an unmade road built by the Romans) or by ferry.

Weather in Djerba

The beach season on Djerba is longer than on the mainland of Tunisia. Desert winds carry the island warmly, you can swim here from April to mid-November. The temperature in summer is kept at around 30-32C, and the water warms up to 28C.

Shopping in Djerba

It is best to shop at the local market. There you can buy everything from jewelry to ceramics, dates, carpets and olive oil. As in any market in Tunisia, here you need to bargain with sellers.

Unlike supermarkets and shops, merchants in the Djerba market accept not only Tunisian dinars, but also dollars. However, it is better to pay in local currency, as sellers can significantly underestimate the rate.

Excursions from the island of Djerba

The most popular excursion in Tunisia is a two-day trip to the Sahara Desert. Many tourists visit Tunisia with the aim of getting on this tour. A trip to the Sahara from the island of Djerba will take much less time than from the mainland.

Djerba Island is one of the most stunning resorts in Tunisia. You can go here even in winter, if you miss the summer - here almost all year round the same warm water.

Be sure to get acquainted with the ancient synagogue of Gribu and three mosques. The fortress of Borj Gazi Mustafa is very interesting, as well as the museum of folk art and traditions.

In October 2018, during the school autumn holidays, we decided to extend our summer a little and visit the island of Djerba with the whole family. We bought a package tour that includes a flight from Moscow on a regular flight of the Red Wings airline to Djerba and back, accommodation at the Royal Garden Palace 5 * hotel for 12 days (13 nights) for three adults, transfer from Zarzis airport, located directly on the island itself , and a return transfer from the hotel to the airport, three buffet meals a day, and medical insurance with an insurance amount of $ 40,000 for each. The total cost of the tour was 175,000 rubles ($2,666). A pleasant and unexpected bonus was the offer in the form of two free visits to the "a la carte" restaurants located on the territory of the hotel and offering dishes of national Tunisian cuisine and Italian cuisine. The hotel guide also offered an individual free transfer from the hotel to the nearest town of Midoun with a visit to shopping centers for shopping.

In Djerba, all prices are in local currency - dinars, the rate of 1 dinar is approximately 22 Russian rubles. Excursions around the island could be ordered directly from the hotel guide, or bought on the spot, which we chose, since the island is quite small and you can move around it quite safely and quite cheaply by taxi. A visit to the Djerba explore park cost us 45 dinars for three plus the cost of a taxi there and back 14 dinars. However, the cost of one ticket (15 dinars) includes visiting several objects at once: the tourist market, the Heritage village, the Lella Hadria Museum and the crocodile farm, so it’s more profitable to book more than one excursion, but take a complex ticket already on the spot. Another unusual place in Djerba is Jerbahood, famous for its graffiti. A round trip by taxi cost 30 dinars. Inspection and photography of wall paintings - free of charge and without any restrictions. A visit to the El-Ghriba Synagogue, one of the oldest in the region, over two thousand years old, will also be inexpensive. In fact, at the entrance to it, the minister asks to leave a symbolic fee for the needs of the temple. Each of us paid 5 dinars, and the trip to the synagogue and back by taxi cost 20 dinars.

Food and products

To be honest, the food at the hotel was so good, both in terms of the quality of the food and its variety, that the thought of eating somewhere else did not even arise, we simply did not have time to get hungry. However, while shopping in the city of Midoun, we went to a local cafe to try real Tunisian coffee. A small cup of black coffee cost 7 dinars, a plate with dates and national sweets 12 dinars. Products in stores are relatively cheap, while there are many goods of both local and French origin, because Tunisia is a former French colony. In the Carrefour supermarket, local red wine 0.7 liters costs an average of 9-12 dinars, a box of dates weighing 500 grams - 15 dinars, 350 grams - 9 dinars, extra virgin olive oil with a volume of 0.5 liters costs 15 dinars, a can of tuna in olive oil 250 grams - 6 dinars, a box with oriental sweets such as nougat with various types of nuts and spices weighing 500 grams - 19 dinars. It is worth noting that alcohol is sold only in special shops "Generals", and in the city of Midoun it can be purchased in the newly built Noor Mall. Local red wine 0.7 liters costs an average of 9-15 dinars, local vodka - 0.7 liters of booze costs 34 dinars.

Souvenirs and other goods

The cost of clothes and souvenirs in shops and in the market is very different. Moreover, it is impossible to bargain in shops, but in the markets it is impossible not to bargain, since the initial price is at least three times higher. So, a women's leather bag can be bargained for 25 dinars, with its initial cost of 120. A men's leather handbag like a handbag cost us 65 dinars (instead of 175). Jewelry is quite expensive, for example, a turquoise silver pendant costs 75 dinars, but if you take something else, earrings or a ring, feel free to ask for a 30% discount on both items. A men's polo shirt made of good quality cotton costs at least 35-45 dinars, a set of national clothes - a tunic embroidered with ornaments and sequins with harem pants 65 dinars.

Cost of services and entertainment

Various entertainments were offered on the beach: a camel ride along the beach costing 20 dinars, riding an inflatable sofa - 60 dinars, renting a jet ski for two for 15 minutes - 90 dinars. The cost of a taxi, both when ordering from the hotel reception, and when self-catching on the road is the same - 4 dinars to the nearest town of Midoun (about 5 km). A visit to the hotel's SPA center, depending on the procedures, costs from $60 for one massage session to $250 if you buy services in the form of a subscription from several visits.
