Dimensions, number and weight of bags

Baggage that you do not check in, but carry with you in the cabin, is called hand luggage. You can place hand luggage in the overhead storage compartment or under the seat of your chair.

Flights operated by KLM Cityhopper have limited luggage space in the cabin, so we may ask you to carry your cabin baggage in the hold. However, if you are a Flying Blue Elite member, we may bring one piece of hand luggage into the cabin of the aircraft.

As hand luggage you can take the following:

Travel class Quantity and dimensions Weight restrictions Allowed Extra Items
    Economy class
    (length x width x height)*

must not exceed 12 kg (26 lbs).

small laptop or any other 1 item
    similar or smaller.
    World Business/Europe Select 1 bag 55 x 25 x 35 cm (21.5 x 10 x 13.5 inches)
    (length x width x height)* and one bag smaller than 45 x 20 x 35 cm
    (18 x 8 x 13.5 inches) (length x width x height)**
The weight of your carry-on baggage, including additional items,
must not exceed 18 kg (40 lbs).
1 of the following items: purse, briefcase, camera,
small laptop or any other 1 item of similar or smaller size.

    * Overall dimensions must not exceed 115 cm (45 inches), including wheels and handles.
** Exception for World Business Class passengers: on flights from India, you can carry one piece of hand luggage. You can check in a second carry-on bag free of charge.

    Special rules for liquids

Liquids, creams and aerosols are subject to special regulations.

You can carry them in your cabin baggage in small quantities, not more than 100 ml (3.4 oz) per item. They must be in a transparent resealable plastic bag with a volume of no more than 1 liter. The bag must be closed, and the items in it must fit its size and fit easily into a plastic bag.

One plastic bag is allowed per passenger. During the inspection of your luggage, you may be asked to show the plastic bag for liquids separately.

These rules do not apply to the following:

    • Baby food for use during the flight
    • Medicines for use during the flight, subject to a prescription or a certificate from the attending physician
    • Special diet foods for use during the flight

    Duty free goods

If you wish to carry duty-free goods purchased at the airport in the cabin, it is important to consider the following:

At European airports: You can purchase liquids such as spirits or perfumes after going through ticket and passport control or on all European airlines. The liquids you purchase will be packaged and sealed. The seal is valid for one day. If you are transferring to a connecting flight, you must not open sealed liquids until you have arrived at your final destination. At other airports: Duty-free liquid goods purchased at an airport outside the European Union will be confiscated at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, even if packaged and sealed.

However, you can carry liquids purchased in duty-free zones at the following airports:

    • All airports in Canada
    • All US airports
    • Kuala Lumpur
    • Singapore
    • Croatia: Dubrovnik, Pula, Rijeka, Split, Zadar or Zagreb
Liquids must be properly packaged and sealed within the previous 36 hours. If you are connecting to a connecting flight in the United States of America or Canada, we recommend that you pack your duty-free liquid items purchased through Customs in your hand luggage.

    Prohibited Items

Please note: Printers and toner cartridges weighing 453 grams or more are not allowed in checked baggage on flights to the United States of America. This rule applies to both hand luggage and checked luggage.

According to the rules in force in the European Union, the following items are prohibited from being carried in hand luggage in the cabin of a passenger aircraft:

    • Liquids, other than liquids in small quantities and packaged in accordance with official regulations
    • Animal products
    • Weapon
    • blunt and pointed objects
    • Explosive, flammable, chemical and toxic substances
Unpackaged lithium batteries, such as rechargeable lithium batteries and AA lithium batteries for laptops and DVD players, can only be carried in carry-on baggage. All spare batteries must be carried in their original packaging. If you have not retained the original battery packaging, you must cover the contact surface of the battery to insulate it and pack each battery in a separate plastic bag.

Hand luggage for children under 2 years old

For a child under the age of 2 who does not have a separate seat reserved, you may carry one piece of hand baggage containing baby care items. This carry-on baggage must not exceed 55 x 35 x 25 cm (21.5 x 13.5 x 10 inches) and weigh no more than 10 kg. If there is space under your seat or on the overhead luggage rack, you can take a small, collapsible stroller into the cabin with you as hand luggage. If there is no space for a stroller in the cabin, you can check it in as baggage at no extra charge.

    Our Partner Baggage Policy

Some of our partners have different baggage policies. For more information, please contact your travel agent or the airline you are interested in directly.

KLM is a Dutch airline founded in 1919. In this article, we will provide you with the information you need to know about the carry-on baggage allowance on KLM flights, the number of items you can carry, and the size and weight restrictions.

    Carry-on baggage on KLM

The airline has established a general hand luggage allowance for passengers included in the fare.

    Economy class

    • 1 piece of hand luggage 55x35x25 cm
    • total weight - maximum 12 kg

Business Class on European and intercontinental flights:

    • 2 pieces of hand luggage, each no larger than 55x35x25 cm
    • 1 accessory, e.g. light suitcase, briefcase or laptop, no larger than 40x30x15 cm
    • total weight - maximum 18 kg

KLM warns that large bags that fit as carry-on baggage may still have to be checked in free of charge at the boarding gate due to the limited capacity of the overhead bins in the cabin.

    Traveling with children

If your child has their own (booked) seat, they can carry the same amount of carry-on baggage as an adult passenger, including a foldable stroller and child car seat (seat).

For a child under 2 years of age who is traveling on your lap, without a separate seat, you can bring:

    • 1 piece of hand luggage with baby care items weighing no more than 12 kg, the dimensions of which do not exceed 55x35x25 cm.
    • 1 foldable baby stroller
    • 1 child car seat (seat)

On intercontinental flights, KLM has only a few special baby food packages available. They are provided free of charge and do not need to be pre-ordered.

You can carry 1 collapsible stroller per child free of charge on all KLM flights. If the child's stroller (maximum size 15x30x100 cm) does not fit under the seat or in the overhead carry-on compartment, you can check it in free of charge and check it in at the aircraft entrance to the staff.

    Musical instruments

You can carry a musical instrument as hand luggage or buy a seat for it in the cabin.

    1) as hand luggage

You are allowed to carry a small musical instrument (violin or smaller instrument) in the cabin instead of carry-on baggage. The tool must fit in the overhead carry-on compartment. Instrument dimensions should not exceed 55x35x25 cm.

    2) on an extra bed

Tools with large dimensions can be transported at an additional place. The length of the tool should not exceed 140 cm and weight 45 kg. Book an extra seat in advance through KLM Support.

    Transportation of liquids

You can carry liquids in your cabin baggage in small containers (no more than 100 ml) per item. All liquids must be placed in one transparent, tightly closed plastic bag with a volume of no more than 1 liter. The bag must be closed and the containers must be of the right size and fit easily in it. One plastic bag is allowed per person.

    But you can always carry:

    • baby food for consumption during the flight;
    • medicines for use during the flight with a prescription or a certificate from the attending physician;
    • special diet foods for consumption during the flight.

    Goods from the duty-free zone

When traveling within Europe, you can carry liquids purchased in the duty-free zone. The liquids you purchase, such as alcoholic beverages and perfumes, will be packaged and sealed. The seal is valid for one day. You must not open the sealed package until you have arrived at your final destination, even if your journey includes a connecting flight.
