The Perm Shipyard is hiding in the Kama Zaton. This place was sung by the Ural writer Alexei Ivanov in the novel The Geographer Drank His Globe Away. Here the ships of the river fleet are repaired and live out their lives. The territory is guarded - a simple passer-by will not enter. The film crew of the 59.ru portal met the old captain to find out what was happening in the place where every Perm boy dreamed of getting into in his childhood.

At the entrance to the Perm Shipyard, there is a boat painted blue and white. Last summer, he decorated the town of the White Nights festival. At the entrance of the plant, the film crew was met by a polite security guard: "Please, Anatoly Petrovich is waiting for you." They were allowed to enter the territory by car - it would take about twenty minutes to walk.


We pass the dilapidated buildings of the factory boiler room and woodworking shop. Near the machine shop there are capital benches overgrown with weeds. Reminds me a bit of the dead city from Mowgli. Finally, we reach a two-story house that has grown into the ground. The old captain is waiting for us here.

Anatoly Petrovich Bodrov is from Saratov. When he started working in Perm, about 140 ships wintered in Zaton. Large cargo and passenger ships, dredgers. There were huge workshops. Up to 100 diesel engines per year were repaired in the mechanical workshop. They built powerful cranes and sent them all over the USSR. A total of 74 cranes were built. They built "pusher" ships, barges. A lot of furniture was made in the woodworking shop.

Our interlocutor has been navigating for more than 30 years. On large ships and on the Meteor. Many of the ships I worked on are now permanently laid up here in Zaton. Anatoly Petrovich himself has been retired for 20 years. He works as a responsible duty officer at the shipyard.
“After my third year, I worked as the third navigator on the ship Frederic Joliot Curie. After the fourth course, he came to him. And after graduation - the same ship, only "Surgeon Razumovsky", the second navigator. Then he worked on the Gladkovo as the first navigator. Here he stands. From "Gladkov" he went to the paddle steamer "Perm" as a captain. The next year he accepted "Ukraine". Then the private traders renamed it "Bulgaria",” he lists the ships on which he had a chance to work.

At the pier is the ship "Composer Glazunov" - the same type of vessel as the infamous "Bulgaria". “These are good ships,” Anatoly Petrovich sighs. “They were built for us by the Czechoslovak Republic.” According to the river register, such vessels could take up to 500 people and up to 30 tons of cargo on board. There were cases that they carried 100 tons. Since the line was a passenger-and-freight line, the captains had to carry both passengers and cargo.
“If we make plans, fine. If we don’t do it, then in the winter they bow us down from all the stands, - says the interlocutor. - Such a two-deck type of ships is more stable than three-deck ones, because they have a flat-bottomed hull, good draft, and those hulls are semi-keeled, so they are already starting to wallow in a wave, like a roly-poly. And this one is normal, how the iron goes. After the incident with Bulgaria, they were all banned. This drove from Saratov without passengers. Exactly the same ships "Armenia" and "Composer Skryabin" are in Tchaikovsky. They were taken away from here. They were more or less in good condition. Now all that's left of them is metal. Everything else was taken away, plundered.

We continue our walk around the plant. There are about 40 workers here - boilermakers, welders, a turning section. Previously - up to a thousand people, along with the crew. There are huge lathes in the repair shop. Diesel engines are repaired here, ten-meter shafts are processed, which rotate the propellers of such giants as Volgodon. Stove heating in the room. A woodpile is stacked in the corner. Workers hide from the cold in winter in plastic tents that resemble huge greenhouses. This is how they worked during the war.

There are many boats on the territory of the plant. They lie everywhere. The fact is that when the ships are undergoing refurbishment, new requirements are imposed on them. Old boats are taken down and new ones put in. The old ones just stay and lie.
- These boats are no longer good for anything?
- Remember "White Nights" last year? So the boats were taken from here. They nailed the moss, everything else, painted ... Did you see the boat on the way? He was there too.

We are approaching the Soviet Union ship. It has been standing in Zaton for about 12 years. The ship survived the state and does not think to rot.
“His hull is made, the captain told me, you know, they say, Petrovich, paint it inside, usually the paint leaves, rusts ... But here it doesn’t rust, because the primer falls off, and the metal under it is like new. The hull is assembled from the metal from which submarines were made,” Anatoly Petrovich reveals the secret of the “Soviet Union”.

On the bow of the ship was a hundred-kilogram bronze coat of arms of the USSR. Factory employees remember that the ship arrived without him. Many people were taken aback by the management. Emblem found. Now it is stored somewhere in the bins of the enterprise.
Nearby is the ship "Frédéric Joliot Curie". Anatoly Bodrov departed on it for more than 10 navigations. In 2011, a fire broke out on the ship.

Passengers were transported along the Kama by hydrofoils. "Rockets", "Meteors", "Sunrise"... From the bushes by the road, like a monument, the nose of the "Sunrise" sticks out. If you get closer, you can see that its board is torn apart. Iron with torn edges sticks out to the sides, revealing the interior of the cabin.

“This Voskhod in the 90s jumped onto the embankment above the Ust-Kachka pier twenty meters from full speed. The people remained alive and well, there were no victims and injuries, - says Anatoly Petrovich. - Flew out. From full speed, 60 kilometers speed. If it were on the pier, the bow would be all crumpled, and this is the salon - there are people here.

This year, 90 ships are wintering in Zaton. Some of them are being renovated. The enterprise is still afloat, although there are almost no workers left. Previously, ship crews were hired at the plant in the winter. Now the crews are leaving and running in all directions.
