All next week the pulse of Russian trail running will beat on Elbrus!

Here, for the sixth time, the highest trail not only in Russia, but in all of Europe - starts!

Five races of the race will bring together more than 800 participants this year!

We talk in detail about the races themselves and the favorites to win.

Time limit 73 hours, 5 ITRA/UTMB points. The race starts in the Azau glade from a height of 2,365 meters (for comparison, UTMB® start in Chamonix is 995 meters), the finish line is the village of Upper Baksan. During the race, the participants rise to a height of more than 3,000 meters three times: the Azau, Balkbashi and Kyrkytaush passes, as well as the North Karakay almost 3,000 meters. The highest point of the race is Balkbashi pass 3691 meters! (UTMB® -2,570) The average race altitude is 2,518 meters (UTMB® only has 1,697 meters).

The run has been running since 2012. This is a team race of two to four participants. The route is not marked, the movement is on a GPS track. The current distance record of 18 hours 27 minutes and 27 seconds since 2016 belongs to the team consisting of Konstantin Ivanov And Yakova Franklakh.

In 2017, 24 teams will start the race, of which: 16 men's teams, 7 mixed teams and one women's team.

  • Yakov Franklakh- index performance 730;
  • Konstantin Ivanov- index performance 740;
  • Kiril Rusin- index performance 746.

This year, the race record holders Yakov Frenklakh and Konstantin Ivanov were joined by Kiril Rusin, who in 2015 showed the best result among Russians at UTMB® in the entire history of the race. There is no doubt that this team will win. There is only one question - will they be able to improve last year's result or not?

Yakov Franklakh, - “Handsome, fast and smart - that's me, and the guys are just good. There are chances for a record, but it all depends on the conditions. I will start acclimatizing on Sunday, then the guys will come. In any case, we are planning an attack on the record, and then how it goes.”

Among the "mixed teams" we can distinguish a married couple Irina And Alexander Safonov as part of the Kuragan team. The pair have a wealth of ultra-racing experience, including the monstrous Tor des Géants and the 4K Alpine Endurance Trail. Irina and Alexander have already finished three times at this distance, and in 2015 they took third place in the overall standings.

The “Beyond!” team also seems strong. composed of: Maksim Pinchuk And Tatiana Ufimtseva(index ITRA 554). Tatyana last year was second among women at the Elbrus Mountain Ultra distance.

Among the "women's teams" the team "Girls" will undoubtedly win - Nadezhda Korolyatina(index ITRA 625) and Anastasia Galitarova(index ITRA 551). Anastasia Galitarova won the women's stage race last year, Nadezhda Korolyatina. For both of them, this will be the first experience of a 100-kilometer ultra-trail in the mountains.

Time limit 28 hours, 4 ITRA/UTMB points. The race has been running since 2016. The average height of the race is 2660 meters. Start and finish village Verkhniy Baksan. Participants rise to a height above 3,000 meters three times. The highest point is 3,700 meters! Women's 2016 winners are Safronova Irina with the result - 10:49:09, and for men Zavodsky Alexey - 8:50:54.

Last year's record will fall! This is without a doubt! It will fall because one of the strongest trailrunners in the world will start this race: a Frenchman and a Russian. This is what TOR-5 looks like in men.

Dmitry Mityaev, - “aEWR is our favorite race in Russia. The level of organization is growing every year, the race is not inferior in quality to European trails. Unfortunately, we have a difficult season and I have to not prepare for this race, as it falls on the recovery period, but still I will try to fight for a high place. This year is going to be a strong line-up and it will be very interesting, I ran all the personal distances on the aEWR except for 59 km and the records for 34 and 46 km belong to me, but I will run 59 for the first time. I think that the winner can show a time of 7:05 - 7:35, and improve the previous record by more than an hour, for sure. In general, the most important thing in such mountains is to enjoy this unrealistically beautiful nature and get a charge of emotions! Good luck to all! See you at the start!"

A pre-launch interview with can be read at.

Alexey Tolstenko, - “I feel good, I have a great desire to take part in this event, but I have not yet plunged into the atmosphere of the holiday and my thoughts are busy with urgent, routine matters. It is impossible to come to the Elbrus region in advance to train in the conditions of the track and breathe in the mountain air. This year's running race without sufficient acclimatization, I consider it as an acclimatization training start before UTMB. For myself, I set the task to enjoy overcoming the distance and try to improve last year's result. The level of competition for the top three is very high, which will allow you to compare your finish time with that of the trail masters. But in general, aEWR is a running holiday in a unique place, a great opportunity to meet friends, chat, get new emotions.”

Among more than 100 participants in the race -17 women, including the top three in the composition: Elena Lebedeva, last year's winner and current record holder at the Elbrus Mountain Marathon; Irina Safronova, also the winner of last year and the holder of the current record, but at the Elbrus Mountain Ultra distance (the winner of 2015 at the Elbrus Mountain Race distance); and, Anna Khryashcheva third place at Elbrus Mountain Marathon 2016.

Elena Lebedeva,-“First of all, many thanks to the organizers for the opportunity to participate in the EWR. This race has become a tradition for me! Very soon I will again go to the start and will be able to test myself at a distance of 59 kilometers. This will be my debut. I have never run such long distances.”

Anna Khryashcheva, - “The opponents are strong, very strong. Lena Lebedeva last year just rushed through the distance. I think this year she will also show a good result. Ira and I have not met anywhere else, I mean races. I know her as a winner at distances of 112 and 59 kilometers. In general, we will have a fun company! But other rivals should also not be overlooked. All sorts of surprises are possible. After all, last year I didn’t even know who Lebedeva was! I will try to reach out for the girls. Their forte is technical descents. I can't run them that fast yet. This year I want to try a different approach to acclimatization. I will arrive in Terskol on July 30th. Well, this race will be my first official ultra!”

Time limit 24 hours, 3 ITRA/UTMB points. The race has been running since 2013. Start and finish are also in Upper Baksan. Participants twice rise to a height of more than 3,000 meters. The highest point of the Syltran pass is 3,440 meters. The average height of the race is 2,531 meters. The best result in men belongs to Dmitry Mityaev which in 2014 showed the time - 5:26:10. Among women Elena Lebedeva in 2016 she ran a marathon distance in 7:15:34.

Men will compete for the top step of the podium Anton Suzdalev(index ITRA - 759) and Vitaly Shkel(index ITRA - 735). Anton Suzdalev took second place last year at the Elbrus Trail, losing only to Dmitry Mityaev. Vitaly Shkel, master of sports in skyrunning, does not have an actual ITRA rating and it will be very interesting to see what form he is in.

Anton Suzdalev, - “This year I entered the distance of 46 kilometers, because I want to run something new, that year I ran 34 kilometers. I won’t prepare and sum up especially for the race, this time the vacation turned out to be longer and I managed to come to Terskol in advance to fully train, I took roller skates and everything I needed to prepare for winter! I think one thing does not interfere with the other and the race will be a good end to the collection!”

Vitaly Shkel- “I am now at a training camp in the northern Elbrus region, getting ready for the ski season. The adidas Word Race is relatively close, so I decided to run it in preparation. I will refrain from any comments on the race. For a long time I did not run such starts. I set the main goal for myself at this start - to run as much as I can at this stage of preparation. I have heard about the good organization of this race, it will be interesting to compare it with the European ones.”

Among women, the marathon distance will likely be dominated by the 100k master of sports, winner of this year's Markoth Trail 80 and X-race Wild Trail, Svetlana Buravova(index ITRA 637), and it will compete with Oksana Akhmedova(index ITRA 536), winner of Elbrus World Race - Marathon 2015.

Time limit 24 hours. 2 ITRA/UTMB points. The race has been running since 2012. Start and finish in the village of Upper Baksan at an altitude of 1590 meters. The highest point of the ascent to the Syltran pass is 3,440 meters. The average height of the race is 2365 meters. The track record belongs to the sports couple Ekaterina and Dmitry Mityaev and is 4:31:28 for women and 3:27:46 for men.

The main intrigue of this race is the running duel between the legend of the Russian ultra-running, the master of sports of international class and the eight-time (!) winner Elena Nurgalieva and the champion of Russia in skyrunning, the strongest trailrunner in Russia among women Ekaterina Mityaeva.

Elena Nurgalieva, - “The motivating reason for me to come to Elbrus was my sister's victory on. She sort of fulfilled her mission in terms of mountain racing - now it's my turn. And of course, the participation of my friends in this race! One of them ran over it more than once and told how great it was there! He painted everything so colorfully that we fell in love with this start without even participating in it.

I flew to Kislovodsk three weeks before the race to train here for 12 days, and then go up to Terskol and go through a week of acclimatization there. It has never risen higher than Kislovodsk in the Caucasus! First experience! It will not be possible to run such a start from a kandachka without acclimatization. You can walk, crawl - you can, but you can't run fast. I do not know how I will succeed or not, time will tell! Rather, the start will show!

Such starts are a meeting of old friends and acquaintance with new ones. Getting new pleasant emotions and many come just for this! For them, the result is not important. The main thing is to meet, chat in a circle of the same desperate people who love the Mountains, nature and sports!”

The men at this distance also have a very interesting composition. First of all, this is a master of sports in athletics Evgeny Pishchalov(index ITRA - 718). He will also be opposed by the master of sports, but in mountain running, the owner of a personal record in the marathon 2:33 and the recent winner of the “Race of Heroes” in Grozny Sergei Perelygin. It is also worth noting Chingiz Baikasheva(index ITRA 647) representing the Skyrunning Federation of Kazakhstan.

Sergei Perelygin, - “We have gathered a group of guys who run races with obstacles, we decided to make a training camp in the mountains of the Elbrus region, and at the same time compete in the trail. I participated in it once in 2013 and the memories are very positive. I ran a distance of 34 kilometers, I managed to win, but not under my own name, since my friend did not have time to show up. Despite the fact that the start is a training one for me, I'm only motivated to win! I want to see how I feel, work out the descent, compete with strong guys and, of course, admire the beauties of Elbrus!”

Sergei Zon-Zam, President of adidas Elbrus World Race, CEO of Alpindustriya:

“On behalf of the organizer of the adidas Elbrus World Race, AlpIndustriya, I welcome you to the sixth competition! As a climber, my focus is always on ensuring that all participants return safely from the distance. This year we are further developing the system of guides and judges along the route and the communication between them in order to make the competition as safe and successful as possible. We continue to develop the longest distance around Elbrus and, I hope, this year the distance in its current form will be completed by the participants for the last time. We are working to ensure that from next year this distance will take on the classic form of the Golden Ring around Elbrus - from Voroshilovskiye Koshey to Karachaevsky Djily-Su, the participants will go through the Kurshou Pass and the Koltsevaya Pass. I wish you a fair and safe fight on the tracks of the Elbrus region!”

Ivan Kuzmin, adidas Elbrus World Race Director:

“On behalf of the Organizing Committee and partners of the adidas Elbrus World Race 2017, I welcome our participants and spectators to the adidas Elbrus World Race. This year we have over 800 participants. It's nice that there is a growing interest in our competitions from Russian and foreign trailrunners. Introduced last year, the Elbrus11 met our expectations, launching many high-altitude trailrunner careers. This trend continues this year and, surprisingly, again, as in 2016, there will be more women than men at the start of Elbrus11!

For those who want to further push the boundaries of what has been achieved in 2018, we plan to introduce a new Elbrus 50 Miles distance of 80 km. 2017 is a significant year for the creation of the Russian Trail Running Association (RATR) and this opens up new opportunities for us! In 2018, the adidas Elbrus World Race will host the Russian Trail Running Championship for the first time and we will be able to seriously dream of the World Trail Running Championship in the Elbrus region!”

The magazine website wishes all participants a successful finish and see you on Elbrus!

710 athletes at four different distances at the same time - a new aEWR mass record. The number of participants has grown by more than a third. Sports results have also improved - six track records have been set. A significant role in this was played by the participation of world-class masters.

112 km of patience and care

The Elbrus Mountain Race team event, as always, preceded the start of the individual disciplines and turned out to be the only event in the aEWR program where the number of participants was reduced. 45 athletes in 20 teams started from the Azau glade. Together with them, the number of starters in the aEWR is 755, thus setting a record not only for the number of simultaneous starters, but also for the total number of participants in the competition.

The winners Dmitry Gaukov and Maxim Davydov - 21:06:56, achieved only half of their goals. Last year's track record of Yakov Frenklakh and Konstantin Ivanov withstood 18:27:27. Partly, the fact is that the revenge attempt for the team of Gaukov and Davydov came out in absentia. Ivanov fell ill, and Franklakh was left without a partner. There were no opponents of the same level to the current champions, and, having provided a sufficient lead, Dmitry and Maxim took a calm pace. The point is the heat, in which an attempt to work at record speeds could cost the athletes their health. Two teams had to retire.

Running in such conditions brought to the fore the relationship in the team - the ability to take care of the capabilities of a friend.

Perhaps that is why the teams, which included women, this time took higher places. A year ago, the first six positions were for male duets.

This time, Maria Nazarova and Alexander Kuts - 23:11:09, Pyotr Arinichev and Vladimir Khamurzov moved away from the silver during the race - 23:29:39.

Close to equalizing the number of men and women on the podium were Nadezhda Korolyatina and Anastasia Galitarova, but the difficulties of high-altitude acclimatization left the debutante girls in 4th place in the overall standings - 26:28:49. Elbrus Mountain Race veterans Alexander and Irina Safonovs are fifth with the result of 29:20:08

Test day - record day

The competition day on August 5 lasted almost a day. According to tradition, the adidas Mountain Ultra participants started it before everyone else, at four in the morning - they also finished it at 3:47 on August 6. The closing marathon runners also ran the next morning - for 3 hours and 13 minutes.

The races turned out to be very difficult - those who left the track (only 26 people) were at all distances. One participant could not overcome 11 km, three men and women each failed 34 km, two women and a dozen men did not submit to the marathon. Even such a powerful fighter as the winner of Elbrus Mountain Race-2016 Yakov Frenklakh turned out to be in this company. Five men retired from the 59 km race.

The severity of the tests for the athletes was already predicted by their stay in the start zone. Only 93 people who went to a distance of 59 km escaped the heat in the first kilometers; the rest came under heavy fire from the sun's rays right at the exit of the buses that brought everyone to the starting point.

The triumph of speed

Apparently, therefore, already at the warm-up, the runners were divided according to the tactics of behavior.

Natalya Erbet subdued many to the incendiary rhythm of her zumba; there were also many who preferred to calmly prepare the body for work.

The stratification continued - 617 participants of the simultaneous mass start races Elbrus 11, Elbrus Trail and Elbrus Marathon were divided into runners and walkers.

Naturally, those who ran, first of all, had nowhere else to run except at the beginning of the distance - the participants of Elbrus 11. There were 269 of them - like last year, this is the most massive and the only predominantly female competition aEWR-2017. The aforementioned Natalia Erbet stayed true to the energetic style of her warm-up, which led her to third place in her age group. And in general, the competitive day came out fast. In men, Oleg Grigoriev updated the track record - 1:39:27. Last year's winner Sergey Khomenko became the second - 1:46:55, the third - Egor Belousov - 1:54:08.

In women, Anastasia Chelysheva, even slowing down by 5 minutes 21 seconds, defended last year's short distance champion title, her current result is 2:12:11, but the second - Aigul Mingazova - 2:17:06 and the third - Victoria Golovina - 2:25: 48 outperformed last year's women's medalists.

Thus, participants with sporting ambitions experienced the pressure of two factors at once: not only the heat, but also the increased competitive pace.

This was even more pronounced at the longest individual distance - 59 km. The leaders of these competitions finished at about the same time as the winners of certain age categories Elbrus 11.

Champion - Dmitry Mityaev. His new track record of 7:13:54 beats last year's champion Alexei Zavodskoy by 1 hour 37 minutes.

Thanks to this victory, Dmitry became the only one who won individual races of all categories according to the classification of the International Trail Running Association, held by aEWR.

Opponent is the first support

Dimitri would not have been so fast without a reckless rivalry with the eminent French trail runner Sebastian Chegno.

The winner emphasized these two factors when commenting on his speech: “What helped you run? Well, first of all, previous victories in all individual races. Secondly, of course, the rivalry with Sebastian. It is very motivating when there is a strong opponent; It's interesting to run when you don't know whether you will win today or not. Chegno's participation had an impact - I started faster than I should have, now I understand it. The whole distance kept in good shape, because. Sebastian and I ran separately.”

Chegno, an experienced tactician, at first went with a slight lag - he arrived at the first food point in less than two minutes after Dmitry. This, by the way, according to Mityaev himself, is not the most comfortable position for him: “My psychology is to catch up, of course. When you overtake someone, you get an extra stimulus, adrenaline. And when someone overtakes you, it is very demotivating. So just catch up."

The lead increased as the hot sun kicked in.

“The pace was pretty high, it's hard to keep up in the heat that was here. It's always hard to run in the heat. It is also obvious that my acclimatization was insufficient. We need five more days,” said Sebastian Chegno, who came to the finish line 31 minutes 56 seconds after Dmitry.

Despite the rivalry, both athletes managed to enjoy the beauty of the track: “The track is excellent, this is the most beautiful route of all that I ran here. Worth a try just for the scenery alone. Although I would recommend to beginners, of course, to start from 34 km, ”Dmitry shared. Sebastian agreed with him: “It is very beautiful here, amazing nature. I think it’s better to start acquaintance with the country in this way, from nature.”

The third - last year's silver medalist Alexei Tolstenko, this time he improved his time by three minutes and 33 seconds - 8:55:13.

The champion among women - Elena Lebedeva, who last year showed the second result in the overall standings at the marathon - at the current ultradistance left the authority of the male winners alone. Having run for a record 9:46:34, she made the former champion Irina Safronova, who, having improved her last year's time by 8 minutes 33 seconds, became the second, 54 minutes and 4 seconds behind the winner. Third - Elena Anosova, 12:48:51.

34 km - the route of women's exploits

Seb Chegno three minutes after he completed the distance, and in the finish line the championship tape was again torn off. Elbrus Trail winner - Artyom Popov - 3:48:13, followed by Sergey Perelygin - 4:22:25, followed by Ilya Tyuvaev - 4:28:45.

There are no records here. Apparently, the reason is that last year's winners went to longer distances. But the women's record of Ekaterina Mityaeva - 04:31:28, set in 2015 and not beaten by her in 2016 (4:44:49), this time was decisively updated by Elena Nurgaliyeva - 8-time Comrades Marathon champion. The result of the new champion is 4:30:21. Surprisingly, she herself is not enthusiastic about her performance: “Unfortunately, it was not possible to run wherever I wanted! The gradient and altitude, coupled with hypoxia, slowed me down, as did all the participants! But I realized one thing, that for mountain races you need to train longer in the mountains in order to better acclimatize and learn how to pass technical sections faster! Running downhill for me was a complete disaster!” Elena said.

The second - Ekaterina Savkina - 4:56:00, the third - Elena Mitrofanova - 5:20:19.

Also noteworthy is the performance of Irina Vidyasheva, who took fourth place. Barely finishing the 14th km, she suffered an ankle injury. At the food station, she was given a fixing bandage, and Irina continued to fight for medals. As a result - 5:40:07 and the first place in the age category. We wish Irina, who ran a distance longer than a half marathon for the first time, a speedy recovery and restoration of sports form.

Maria Nazarova showed miracles of endurance at the same distance. A day to recover from silver at 112 km Elbrus Mountain Race and a new start, 6:03:25 on the track and a new podium - second place in the age category.

This time in a new class

As we have already said, last year's leaders of the Elbrus Trail men's standings went to longer distances. This, by the way, is one of the aEWR trends, many participants here master more and more difficult routes every year at their level. Dmitry Mityaev, as you know, ran 59 km. But Anton Suzdalev and Dmitry Bregeda supported the aEWR-2017 record relay in the marathon.

Anton Suzdalev ran out of 6 o'clock! The reference time at a distance of 46 km is now 5:58:55. Less than half a minute lost to the champion Dmitry Bregeda - 6:00:24. Third - Vitaly Shkel - 6:07:07. The result of last year's champion Kirill Rusin (6:42:56) was surpassed by all three.

Ekaterina Mityaeva improved the women's course record by 29 minutes 1 second - the champion's time was 6:46:33, the second - Svetlana Buravova - 7:33:53 (this is better not only for women, but also for men last year's second results in the marathon), she took bronze Tatyana Bregeda - 8:04:31 (last year this result would have brought her second place).

Passion and sweetness

The aEWR-2017 races are not only difficulties, but also pleasures. The first - before and after the start - was the thoughtful, fast and very useful work of RockTape taping specialists, which probably saved many from injuries that day and helped many to recover. At about the third kilometer of the distance - a cold shower, which helped to avoid premature problems from the heat. The 6 km mark pleased those who spared no time with delicious smoothies from Electrolux. Then a fruit paradise at the food point.

And the main thing that was noted by the majority of participants is the guiding thread of the marking, which did not disappear from the field of vision, no matter what state the athletes were in, no matter how concentrated on the pace, or, on the contrary, no matter how distracted by the surrounding beauty. Finish - the pleasant voice of the host Andrey Arih, who announced the finishers by name, the attention of the media - television crews of federal channels worked here, as well as a correspondent for the republican radio of Kabardino-Balkaria, then again goodies - smoothies, ayran and dinner from the dishes of the cuisine of the peoples of the Elbrus region.

And at this dinner, many were already making plans to return to the aEWR track, because some had questions unanswered and goals not achieved this time, while others had new ideas, plans and ambitions.

In the first week of August, the Elbrus region will host the adidas Elbrus World Race international trail running competition for the sixth time, which deserves the status of an ITRA member and a UTMB® qualifying start. Athletes who have already decided to test themselves at competition distances in 2017 can apply until March 15 on preferential terms.

While the sports community is going through the winter in anticipation of a warm spring and the opening of the season, the adidas Elbrus World Race team offers to seriously think about plans for the summer. Preferential application for all distances of the adidas Elbrus World Race, which gives the opportunity to receive a 15% discount, is already open.

In 2017, the competition will be held for the sixth time, from 3 to 5 August. Traditionally - in the first week of the month - the Elbrus region will become a real sports mecca for both professional trail runners and amateurs. Especially for athletes of different levels of training, there are 5 distances to choose from.

ELBRUS MOUNTAIN RACE is an uncompromising challenge for those who want to test their endurance and endurance. The distance is 112 km of unforgettable landscapes of the North Caucasus with passes, valleys and mountain rivers, with a total climb of more than 5000 m. Only teams are allowed to participate. Finishers will be able to earn 5 ITRA 5 points and UTMB® points.

".. When we got on the right path, fatigue covered such that I confessed to Max that I wanted to die. It amused him a lot. I read in a book that the mood can change for the better a hundred times and vice versa again, so I didn’t to go in cycles, but just waited for the sadness to let go .. " Anastasia Malakhovskaya, Galaxy team

“I have to agree that this is one of the most serious trails in Russia, and you can’t judge what this discipline really is by its length and climb, because there are a lot of fords, stones, difficult trajectories and a very beautiful Elbrus. Despite the fact that I have been to Elbrus many times, for the first time I saw it from two new angles, and this can only be done during these competitions.” Dmitry Postnov, Perpetuum Mobile team

ELBRUS MOUNTAIN ULTRA is a new distance that successfully accepted athletes in 2016, it is the longest marathon - 59 km in the valleys of the Elbrus region and the national park of the same name. The distance comes close to the glaciers of Elbrus from the side of its eastern peak and has a rich, constantly changing relief. Finishers receive 4 ITRA and UTMB® points.

“Then the incredible happened. Nature decided to break the silence, the roar behind us made us turn around, and an incredibly inspiring picture appeared before us - stones, snow and mud fell from the neighboring peak. The nearby Subashi Pass spoke up. I have never seen landslides and avalanches live, but here it is, and even at a safe distance. A few minutes of trance, and now I'm ready to move forward again, to where, for the time being, it's always up and there's no end in sight for this up.” Anna Doronina, Elbrus Mountain Ultra finisher

“Ultra was madly in love with its beauty! It all goes uphill: from the Upper Baksan you go up to the pass of 3500 m and no longer go down below 2500 m - the distance is very specific! Besides, it can be completed in daylight hours.” Irina Safronova, Elbrus Mountain Ultra finisher

ELBRUS MOUNTAIN MARATHON is one of the traditional distances of the adidas Elbrus World Race with a length of 46 km. The route passes through two passes with a total climb of more than 3000 m. Elbrus Mountain Marathon is one of the most difficult mountain marathons in Russia - an ideal option for those who want to test their strength and literally “feel the steepness”! Finishers receive 3 ITRA and UTMB® points.

“I covered the first 11 kilometers of the track in 3 hours, and here came the realization that this is only the beginning of the coolest race I have ever taken part in.” Konstantin Timchenko, Elbrus Mountain Marathon finisher

“I immediately gave it the definition of “stone river”, later, knowledgeable people explained to me that boulders of different sizes are called “kurumnik”. At first they were small, among them you could find at least some glimpses of a narrow path with dirty-wet earth at the base and thorny, cactus-like bushes at the edges. Then the path disappeared altogether, it was time to jump from stone to stone and squeeze between them…” Andrey Khachaturov, Elbrus Mountain Marathon finisher

The ELBRUS TRAIL is a second familiar distance for those who have competed in the adidas Elbrus World Race several times. 34 km is one of the most popular and affordable distances in terms of required experience and equipment. The climb on the distance will be just over 2000 m, and the features of the landscape and terrain will not let you get bored along the way. Finishers receive 2 ITRA and UTMB® points.

“So the moment came when a race appeared that was in no way inferior to the most prestigious European trails in terms of organization! I would recommend this race to any trail runner! “ Ekaterina and Dmitry Mityaev, winners of Elbrus Trail 2016

“When all the participants gathered at the starting field, I was amazed at their number and geography. In total, more than 500 people from different parts of our country and abroad participated in the race. A very friendly atmosphere reigned throughout the race - everyone was interested in each other's well-being, offered help, gave advice, those who were the first to overcome the distance of 11 kilometers returned to the track to support the others. ”- Natalya Shchaveleva, Elbrus Trail finisher

ELBRUS11 - ideal for beginners in trail running, participants will climb 1840 meters up and finish with a view of a truly fabulous panorama of Lake Syltran. To participate in the 11 km distance, no special equipment is required, it is enough to have a jacket, a hat and an energy bar. In addition, all participants will also earn 1 ITRA and UTMB® points.

“As it turned out, running the whole distance is impossible. Due to the nature of the surface, I was only able to walk quickly. Climbing made climbing more difficult - the race started from 1484 meters, and the finish line was around 3300 meters above sea level. After the race, I was often asked: “Well, how do you like the competition?”. I'll be honest - it wasn't easy. Sometimes I wanted to spit out my lungs, stop, sit down.” Baktiyar Ongarbaev, Elbrus11 finisher

Preferential entry with a 15% discount will last until March 15, and for athletes over 60 there is a permanent 30% discount.

This year, five AlpIndustriya employees took part in the adidas Elbrus World Race. We wrote about the impressions of the races at 112 and 59 km last time, now it's the turn of "short" distances - 46 km :) AlpIndustriya store expert in Voronezh Denis Kupryukhin told how he managed to improve his result, when the very participation in the race was in question.

The result is not the best, but it could have been worse, or rather, there was a general desire to retire. I started feeling sorry for myself too much. When you know what's ahead, it becomes even scarier.

I compare myself with a child who did not teach, and 100% of them should be called to the board today. When the preparation is good, in fact, you should only wait for the fruits of your training, but I’m still a “child”: I trained little, absolutely wrong, and at the same time I rarely ate. As a result, the result can be unpredictable, up to the fall, because I don’t like to give up, and retreat is not an option at all ...

Elbrus

On July 30, we arrived with a friend from Voronezh to Pyatigorsk, the altitude is 500 m. 18 reached Cheget. We reached 3100 by 19 o'clock and admired the views a little there. The descent began at 20:00 and after 40 minutes we were eating a cold watermelon in the room.

On August 1, after having breakfast, we went to Shelter 11, taking with us all the equipment, including the MSR tent. But for some reason they didn’t take food with them, deciding that we had high-calorie oatmeal and ground nuts for it - this is what we will eat, because we are not going for long. Already on the “Barrels” I suspected that it would be bad: we don’t even have snacks for the ascent. Bought 2 Snickers on the spot. We wanted more quick noodles, but there was none :(

Having booked the last 2 places on the 2nd floor of the shelter, they began to shake their backpacks in order to take a minimum of things with them to the exit - warm clothes and water. Already, of course, I didn’t want anything: the height is 4050 m, the climb is a little less than 2000 m ... We start to lay in a sweet dream, but the plan must be followed. We got ready and quietly went under the beginning of the sloping ledge at 5000 m. At the exit from the shelter in a snow pit, we found 3 packages of a miracle of food engineering - Gala-Gala sublimates, apparently, someone had lost. The stars were on our side that day, because there was nothing else to eat.

Slowly but surely we reached the end of the Pastukhov Rocks and a little higher, stopped at 4700 m and decided to go down to save time. We descended together with the sunset over the hump of Elbrus. We ate, wrinkled our legs a little from lactic acid - and went to sleep.

August 2. Waking up at 5:30 (we decided to sleep a little longer to restore strength, as it turned out - in vain!), Departure at 6:30. Incredible heat, full breeze - in the desert, people feel, I think, much easier. We go in the membrane (bottom), and up - only a thin thermo. I overheated and near the snowcat I already freaked out and took off my pants, remained in the cross-country. Unfortunately, I am hot on “You”, and overheating of the body ruined all the strength and desire to climb. But I always have a surge of energy on the skew, and I want to switch to running, as it was already at the Red Fox Elbrus Race. Easy running is fun.

On the saddle, of course, there was no longer a question whether to go up or not. At 13:23 we were on the main peak of Elbrus 5642 m. Our arms and legs began to colic, our cheeks vibrated, our health ordered us to go down, and not to put up a tent. Having reached the spit, we caught our breath a little, put up a tent and ran down, because nothing good awaits us on the mountain: there is food only in Terskol, the cable car closes at 16:15, and the third line of the new cable car does not work.

The legs are clogged, the descent is not fast - they did not have time! After a bit of a snack on the "Barrels", we decided to go down on foot on the last pairs. Having got lost at the Mir station, they asked the person how to get down, to which they taught an exclusive offer to go down on the cable car together with the cafe staff. Lucky again!

August 3rd. This is not the time to relax. We went to the Maiden Braids waterfall to run on the descent and “break” the muscles a little. Altitude 2770 m - from there run to the registration at the Cheget glade.

August 4th. Walk up to Azau and down to the Narzanov glade. You need to at least walk before the race.

Adidas Elbrus World Race

5th of August. Start day. I twitched my arms and legs a little, bent down, sat down ... I tried to jog a little to warm the blood - it hurt in my side. Decided to stop. I suspected that my start could end in the first hundred meters. Unpleasant feeling, but you have to try.

I am running the Elbrus Mountain Marathon distance for the second time, so morally it is a little easier, because I already know what lies ahead for me: where and how to behave, how to expend energy. But from the realization that running for 9 hours, it becomes uncomfortable - for many, these figures are beyond reasonable :)

After 2 hours and 25 minutes, after a long ascent from 1527 to 3172 m, I already drank water from Lake Syltrankel; there is a pass ahead that needs to be endured, then try to push on the descent, and at the same time, while working other muscles, relax those that worked on the ascent.

Descent, then a very steep dangerous descent. Climbing on all fours along the grassy slope after the food point. A relatively flat area where I was going to run: somewhere I run, somewhere I walk fast ... I'm tired. There is not enough water, because the backpack is uncomfortable and I can’t get a bottle to drink - it’s easier to drink from puddles, which I did.

Denis on the run. Photo: Evgenia Alekseeva.

Ahead is the steepest pass that needs to be tortured. I drink Cola without gas at the beginning to work myself out on the rise. Finally at the top I force myself to run down. I run like a zombie, I refuse to even think in order to save my last strength, I don’t remember the way and I don’t look back - all life processes are sharpened to run. I want to go home!!!

On the last 10 km, a text message came that the person who was supposed to take us home today would not go anywhere. But after what I do to myself, I don't want to hear about failure. The plan must be carried out!

On August 4, I found out the results on the Internet from a distance of 112 km: first place - 21 hours, which is several hours worse than last year's result, although, in theory, it should be better. Apparently, the terrible heat is taking its toll... Therefore, I boldly added an hour and a half to my previous result of 8:55. I hoped to run at 9:30, so I took 8 sports gels, one more was in the starter pack - let it be 450 g for a backpack, but I can’t do without them. Your fats are not enough, so you constantly need to eat as soon as the liver begins to demand. Saves with a bang. Like what - gel and water at once. Saved most for difficult sites.

Of course, the choice of equipment plays a significant role. This year I decided to equip myself stronger, the only thing I saved on a backpack and took it from a friend, with which I was very wrong. But with sneakers I hit the mark, I chose Hoka Speedgoat for the race. Recently, they have been heard by many, but they look contradictory, not at all like professional shoes for such purposes. Moreover, all my sneakers are torn, although I train a little, but the shoes live for a maximum of six months, and then fall apart. Apparently, I have such a feature :)

Hoka after the race. Photo: Denis Kupryukhin.

The sneakers proved to be excellent: good depreciation, tenacity of the sole, resistance even to side impacts of sharp stones, excellent running properties. They feel great on any mountainous terrain, running in these SUVs is a pleasure. I didn’t feel sorry for them, I wanted to pass the whole test, I didn’t choose where to step and how to put my foot, and they passed it. There were a few scratches on the toe and a little on the sides. But full leg protection. Even those pebbles that flew into the sneakers, I noticed only after the finish.

I passed the finish on the machine, because I had already run this race and almost up to a meter I understood where the end of the torment was already. The most pleasant feeling is when the upper Baksan appears from behind the hills and you understand that you need to be patient a little more and speed up ...

The whole distance after the cut-off of 11 km, a man with a red backpack was running ahead of me: either I overtake him, or he overtakes me. He is careful on the descents, so I caught up with him, but on the last 20 km he went to the point, and I was already upset, but then, before the descent to Baksan, I noticed him. Like him, he seemed to be waiting for me - and like a madman he drowned me down :) Well, of course, I follow him. And so he ran quickly, and then just another breath. He overtook me, maybe by a minute or less. But it was still nice when I met him after the line. They shook hands with each other and thanked for the excellent race and sincere competition.

Before I had time to turn off the clock from recording the track, the two of us were invited to inspect backpacks. Clearing my throat wildly after a fast finish, I began to turn out my backpacks, showing bandages, flashlights and whether all my seams were taped. Having come to my senses a little, I met a friend with our things, and began to wait for a taxi to the Mineralnye Vody. Already home today.

I had to sleep at the station. Dirty, burnt, and even mosquitoes ate in the most sun-scorched places :) Only on the train, after rinsing a little, I came to my senses :)

Summing up the results of the trip, I want to say right away that I want more, but already at a distance of 59 km. I am satisfied with the result: I improved the time by 30 minutes and ran in 8 hours 25 minutes. There is a feeling that I can improve by another hour, but this is already next year. Mountains, and even more so mountain running, cannot leave a person indifferent, you just need to train more to achieve your desired goal.
