What can you take on a plane. Baggage and hand luggage: what can be taken into the cabin and what can be checked into the cargo hold

Any movement is associated with risks, therefore, it requires compliance with specific safety standards and rules. Even hand luggage on an airplane can become a threat to the life of passengers if it contains items prohibited for transportation. Before embarking on a journey, you should assess the degree of need for each piece of hand luggage on board.

Traveling with and without luggage

Going on vacation or on a long trip, a person will take with him a lot of different things necessary for the trip: change and warm clothes, personal hygiene items and cosmetics, medicines, gadgets (phone, tablet, laptop), jewelry, sometimes musical instruments.

If a whole family flies on a tour by an airliner, then the volume of things increases. For children, you will have to grab toys, and for the smallest - strollers (cradles). Most things are placed in suitcases and travel bags. When sorting things by containers, you need to take into account the amount of luggage. If you don’t need it in the cabin, it’s better to immediately check it in the luggage compartment, leaving only the essentials with you.

Note! The carriage of any hand luggage on an aircraft has restrictions stipulated by the rules of airlines. They may differ slightly from each other, but the list of prohibitions for carry-on baggage is more impressive than for the main baggage.

In advance, you should familiarize yourself with the recommendations of air carriers and take into account the requirements for hand luggage, so as not to throw away “extra” things later. This will make it possible to immediately check them in as baggage, leaving with you only the necessary items that correspond to the list.

But what if they go on a flight light - only with hand luggage (on a short business trip), taking a laptop or tablet for entertainment? Here you will have to make a more careful selection of things that you will carry with you. There are restrictions on what you can take, not only in terms of items, but also in the size of hand luggage, as well as in the number of kg.

Deciding what to take with you on the plane, everyone proceeds from their own needs. Not all hygiene products may be needed on board. Those traveling with suitcases will leave them in checked baggage. A traveler with carry-on luggage can purchase these items at the point of final arrival.

Any airport has a duty-free zone, which is located between the checkpoint and the runway. Something can be bribed there (an extra amount of liquid or food for the journey). These purchases should be taken to the salon in unopened packaging.

Important! When determining what can be carried in hand luggage, the customs rules of the country to which the traveler is sent are also taken into account. Many states have their own idea of what is allowed. Upon arrival, the passenger will also have to go through security, and it is not a fact that they will be able to carry everything that is included in the luggage (even if it was bought at Duty Free).

In order to save money, it is better to clarify all the nuances of the upcoming flight in advance so as not to take prohibited items with you. When deciding what is allowed to be carried in the cabin, the volume is also taken into account. If 2 people are traveling with 1 hand luggage, then the amount is calculated per bag and not per number of travelers. Therefore, it is better for a couple to take 2 small luggage, completing everything that is permitted.

What not to take on an airplane

Going on the road, just go to the website of the airline whose services you plan to use, and decide on the list of what you cannot carry on the plane. This will make it easier to select items that are considered hand luggage.

  • It is forbidden not only to carry weapons with you in the cabin of the aircraft - you cannot take them in luggage unless there is an appropriate permit. This category includes both firearms and piercing and cutting objects;
  • If the toy (as well as the lighter) is an imitation weapon, it is best to leave it in the luggage of the plane. They will not let you on board with these things, and on a further journey it is undesirable to leave the baby without his favorite toys;
  • What should not be in hand luggage is piercing and cutting items - penknives and kitchen knives, manicure scissors, metal nail files, sets of sewing needles and knitting needles, a corkscrew, medical needles, razors. Even toys with sharp edges can pose a health hazard to passengers, so they are not allowed on the plane;
  • You can not carry in hand luggage (and even in the luggage compartment) flammable liquids and solids, explosives and radioactive, oxidizing and poisonous, as well as magnetized things. This is a priori prohibited on an airplane, since such luggage can cause a plane crash;
  • There is also a restriction on the carriage of medicines, both in checked baggage and in hand luggage. You can not transport psychotropic and narcotic substances, as well as poisons;
  • It is better to carry working power tools and carpentry equipment, sports equipment (bats, clubs, rackets, skateboards, skis and sticks for them, skates, etc.), fishing rods in your luggage on the plane. Even umbrellas and canes with sharp points can be dangerous;
  • Do not take perishable products in your hand luggage on the plane. You should familiarize yourself in advance with the list of items that are allowed to be taken on board for a snack.

In some cases, it is allowed to carry some items from the above list. So, a metal nail file can be replaced with a soft version with rounded edges. If a sharp razor cannot be taken on a plane in hand luggage, then a razor with removable heads and an electric razor are allowed. It is better to take folding umbrellas - they are more convenient, more compact and safer.

If a cane is an essential item, and it is difficult for a passenger to move without it, then, if there is an appropriate medical certificate, they will be allowed to carry it into the cabin. The same applies to medicines, without which a person cannot do without in flight (tablets, liquid medicines, injections). Their need must be documented, then the medicines will be allowed to be carried in hand luggage.

Important! By figuring out what not to take on a plane, passengers will make their journey easier. In case of detection of items that are prohibited to be transported, they will be seized and sent to a container at the checkpoint. Either you hand over everything superfluous in your luggage (or give it to those who are seeing you off), or you are not allowed on board the aircraft.

Things and items of hand luggage

When deciding what to take with you on a plane, you should not act on the principle of “I carry everything with me”. At hand should be things that are difficult to do without in flight.

  • If you have to constantly carry medicines with you, which are taken regularly at certain hours, then their presence in your purse is allowed for medical reasons. Quick aid preparations for people suffering from a number of diseases (heart disease, hypertensive patients, asthmatics, etc.) are also considered permitted items;
  • Healthy people can also bring an “emergency” first aid kit, including publicly available antispasmodics, analgesics, antipyretics, cold and cough remedies, absorbents, and motion sickness medications. It is allowed to bring on board brilliant green and iodine in special tubes-pencils;
  • If you are flying with children, be sure to take wet wipes with you. Try to keep them without a strong smell - there may be allergy sufferers next to you in the cabin;
  • It is allowed to carry liquids packaged in 100 ml containers in hand luggage on the plane. If there is no suitable volume, you should not take a 200 ml container half filled. The restriction does not apply to the water itself or drinks, but to the volume of containers. In this case, it should be taken into account that the category of liquids also includes creams, gels, lotions, mascaras. Personal hygiene items include toothpaste, mouth freshener, and shampoo;

  • Is it possible to carry food on the plane if they are fed during the flight? Most airlines allow you to bring food with you. They should not be loose, greasy, strong-smelling and perishable. They should be packed in transparent, lidded containers, which will facilitate the inspection procedure;
  • You can carry an inflatable neck pillow with you. It will provide comfort during a long journey;
  • Jewelry should not be carried in luggage, which can be accidentally lost. So it is better to put them in hand luggage;
  • It is also better to keep a mobile phone, tablet, camera with you in order to exclude their accidental breakage;
  • No one sends money and documents to the luggage compartment - they are personal items and are always kept with you (in a men's purse or a handbag).

Before deciding what you can take with you on the plane and what you can’t carry, you should clarify this point again immediately before departure - suddenly there are new rules. Situations may arise that tighten restrictions on the carriage of a number of items in the cabin. As happened during the Sochi Olympics - then the taboo in Russia was imposed on all types of liquids.

What does not apply to hand luggage

In addition to things that fill hand luggage, it is allowed to take other items on board the aircraft. They are listed as personal items and do not require a carriage charge. They are not included in the list of what is forbidden to take into the salon.

  • These are gadgets (tablet, camera, etc.) that are carried separately and are not checked in as baggage. So, a laptop packed in a briefcase is not considered hand luggage. This creates additional convenience - you can shift some of the items into such a bag;
  • Personal belongings also include warm clothes, which should be taken to the salon for those who do not like the coolness of air conditioners;
  • There will always be books and magazines that will help you spend time on a long flight;
  • Folding umbrellas, handbags - these are exclusively personal items that can be taken on a plane without any problems;
  • Traveling disabled people are concerned about the question of whether it is possible to take canes, crutches, strollers on the plane. Yes, these items are personal items and are allowed to be brought into the salon;
  • For the convenience of parents flying with a child, you can take a cradle with you (it is considered a personal item). So it will be more convenient for the mother, and the baby is provided with a restful sleep. The stroller is checked in as luggage at the gangway;

  • On a long flight, blankets and pillows, which are also categorized as personal items and not hand luggage, may come in handy. Therefore, they can be carried into the cabin without any problems;
  • Valuable and fragile things that cannot be carried in the baggage compartment (expensive musical instruments of the allowed weight and size) are allowed to be taken on board the aircraft.

Note! The above list of things that can be considered personal is conditional. And while a camera, tablet, warm clothes and other items are not labeled, not all airlines allow them to be carried for free if the items are not packed in a bag. Sometimes paying for additional "baggage" can cost half the cost of the plane ticket itself.

Parameters defining the load

It is not enough to know what you can take in your hand luggage - some parameters should be taken into account. The baggage allowance is allowed per 1 purchased ticket. Each cargo is subject not only to inspection, but also to weighing and measurements. For the luggage compartment, their own standards are defined, for the carriage of hand luggage - their own.

Note! For each passenger in the cabin there is 1 free place for hand luggage (in business class - 2 places). It has a certain volume, so when buying a travel bag, you need to take this into account. During the inspection, parameters are measured on a special frame. If hand luggage (including wheels and handles) does not fit into the test volumes, it will not be possible to take it into the cabin and will have to be checked in.

This should be taken into account when buying a travel bag or backpack. The maximum allowable amount of baggage is determined by the airline whose services you will use. In different aircraft, the dimensions of the compartments for hand luggage may vary. This point must be clarified with the airline when choosing a bag for hand luggage.

The weight of the luggage is also important, which determines how much you can take with you. The nominal value of kg is determined by the airlines. Overloading involves a surcharge. The maximum possible weight for things not related to carry-on baggage and allowed to be carried in the cabin should not exceed 32 kg.

Important! Before heading to the airport, weigh everything that you plan to take with you on your trip so that there are no misunderstandings at the terminal. The weight and dimensions of the luggage should allow you to put the bag on the shelf on your own, without stress, without resorting to outside help.

It was mentioned above that vials for liquids should not exceed 100 ml. The exception is bottles with baby food, which the baby will need in flight. For liquids, you should purchase a special travel kit, where bottles of the required sizes are already packed in a plastic bag. The total recommended volume for transportation is 1 liter.

The stationery sells handy zippered files that can easily hold small vials of liquids. Having packed all the bottles in such a transparent bag, it will be easier to pass through the inspection. And for the passenger himself, such compactness is very convenient - everything you need will be at hand.

Some airlines set their own restrictions and regulations, which may differ slightly from the standard ones. But one unspoken rule applies everywhere: the more expensive the ticket (respectively, the higher the class), the more cargo you can carry in hand luggage for free. But even in business class, the weight of luggage in one hand should not exceed 32 kg, and the sum of 3 dimensions should be within 158 cm. The maximum allowable number of kilograms depends on the chosen airline. Personal belongings of children are allowed in quantities not exceeding 10 kg.

Video

Not everything can fit in your carry-on, but traveling light has its perks. The absence of the main luggage will allow you to save on the budget - you will not have to pay for a place in the luggage compartment. You also don’t have to wait for luggage to be issued upon arrival at your destination, and worry about the condition in which it flew (and whether it arrived at all). Things taken to the salon are always at hand and are guaranteed not to be lost. The main thing is to take into account all the requirements of airlines and know what is forbidden to be carried on an airplane in hand luggage and what is not. Those things that had to be left at home are not a problem to bribe on the spot.

It's just pointless to talk about it. On a family trip, you can’t do without suitcases and bulky bags, baby strollers and other things necessary for a small passenger, most of which go on a flight in the luggage compartment of an aircraft.

And in order for everything to go smoothly at the airport, it is important to know in advance how many things you can carry for free, what are the allowed dimensions and weight of luggage for the ticket purchased at the selected airline, how to organize the transportation of your things correctly, how to transport non-standard large items, what to do in some emergency situations , for example, if luggage is suddenly lost or it turns out that there are too many things in the luggage. And today is just about that.

General baggage rules

Air carriers around the world are extremely concerned about flight safety. And for this, strict standards and rules of transportation are being developed. Among the priority norms is the calculation of the maximum baggage weight per passenger. Because excess weight on board is a direct threat to the safety of passengers.

All things with which a passenger goes on a flight can be called in one word "baggage", which is conventionally divided into:

  • checked baggage - bags, suitcases, boxes and other items with which the passenger leaves at check-in at the airport, entrusting the care of them to his employees;
  • hand luggage - bags, packages and suitcases that will be with him until the end of the flight. Previously, a special tag was attached to them. Under the new rules, no;
  • personal belongings that are transported free of charge in excess of the established one (for a complete list, see clause 135 of the Russian Aviation Regulations (FAR)).

Air travel around the world is highly regulated. All airlines-carriers and passengers are obliged to obey the established Rules. For Russian airlines in terms of carrying passengers and baggage, various regulations and rules for air transportation are applied, which were amended in accordance with Law No. 409 of October 5, 2017.

According to the law on non-refundable tickets, not only some hand luggage and baggage allowances have changed, but Russian airlines have the opportunity to offer passengers cheaper tickets without baggage, that is, without free baggage, independently determining for which fare to provide baggage.

However, for passengers with tickets that include baggage, a single free baggage allowance has been introduced. This rate cannot be reduced. And if the carrier wants to be generous and increase the allowed limit upwards, please. This is not forbidden.

Each carrier has the right to change and establish its own standards, without going beyond the established general rules and without worsening the conditions for servicing passengers. The limit value may be different (it depends on the rules of the carrier, the type of aircraft, the duration and direction of the flight, the cost of the ticket and the class of service), but its maximum weight is limited - no more than 30 kg (previously it was 32 kg) for one seat. Foreign airlines have their own rules that comply with the laws of their countries.

Each specific situation has its own nuances. In order not to be mistaken, be sure to specify the weight and dimensions of your free baggage, the parameters of which are indicated for a specific fare on the ticket. This information can also be found on the carrier's website.

How much will you have to pay for the transfer?

Sometimes it happens that at the counter at the airport it suddenly turns out that the suitcase weighs more than indicated on the purchased ticket, and the free baggage allowance is exceeded by some parameter: by weight, size or number of seats (depending on the company's rules). There's nothing you can do about it, in most cases you will have to pay extra for the advantage.

The amounts of surcharges are different: from 2500 to 7500 rubles for domestic flights and up to 200 euros for international flights. The amount depends on the carrier's policy (some will turn a blind eye to a small overweight of 1-2kg, while others may bill in full) and how big the overweight is.

Most often, airlines have the following restrictions:

  • for economy class - 1 free seat (suitcase / bag) no more than 20-23 kg;
  • for business class - 2 pieces of baggage (each no more than 30-32 kg);
  • according to the sum of three dimensions (length, width, height), luggage should not exceed 158 cm (or 203 cm).

Sometimes it is more profitable to fly on an expensive ticket with heavy luggage than in economy class with a surcharge for overweight.

Within the maximum allowed limit (at international airports - this is 1 piece of baggage no more than 32 kg, according to Russian rules - no more than 30 kg), it is allowed to carry baggage in excess of the free allowance. In this case, you will have to pay extra according to the carrier's tariffs for excess baggage (that is, for baggage that is not included in the cost of the purchased fare ticket) and coordinate the transportation of such baggage with it.

As for low-cost airlines, they often do not have free luggage. For example, at the Russian Pobeda, all baggage with a standard non-refundable fare is paid, and its cost depends on the weight and number of pieces. It is allowed to take into the cabin any safe items (regardless of their weight and any lists) that can be squeezed through a measuring frame with dimensions of 36 x 30 x 27 cm.

How to transport oversized and heavy baggage?

Heavy baggage - according to Russian rules, this is everything that exceeds the weight of one piece of 30 kg.

Oversized baggage is an excess of the baggage allowance in terms of dimensions, that is, 1 piece is more than 203 cm (or 158 cm, as in most airlines). When specifying the size of a suitcase (bag) when packed, wheels, handles, and pockets are taken into account.

For excess weight, as well as for exceeding the dimensions, you will have to pay.

Depending on the weight limit established in a particular company (in the order of the Ministry of Transport, the maximum weight of baggage allowed for transportation is 50 kg) and size (exceeding 270-320 cm in total), such heavy and large baggage may not be accepted for transportation even for money.

What should the passenger do in this case? Such items can be sent (of course, after agreeing this with the carrier) along the route as unaccompanied cargo, which is accepted at the cargo terminal in the cargo service of the company. You can receive your baggage at the airport of arrival using the air waybill received during baggage check-in.

What to do if you have non-standard baggage?

Most often these are large, unusual and heavy things: musical instruments, snowboards and surfboards, skis, household appliances (washing machines, refrigerators, air conditioners, freezers, TVs, vacuum cleaners) and more. For the carriage of such baggage, airlines prescribe special conditions, indicating the maximum size, weight and contents of one set of baggage, which it is advisable to familiarize yourself with in advance.

Non-standard baggage (most often sports equipment) can be transported free of charge as an addition to the rest of the baggage or as regular baggage within the limits of the ticket fare or for an additional charge. Special conditions may apply, such as the absence of size restrictions that apply to regular baggage. For some types of such non-standard baggage, a fixed fee is charged.

Items listed in paragraph 136 of the Federal Aviation Rules (baby strollers, walkers, wheelchairs and other baggage) are transported free of charge in checked baggage if it is impossible to place them in the cabin without violating comfortable and safe conditions for passengers.

Lucky for those who travel with skis and snowboards. Many carriers (for example, Aeroflot from November 1 to May 15) allow passengers to carry ski equipment and snowboards free of charge in addition to the main baggage or at no extra charge if they fit into the free weight baggage allowance (often without a size limit).

But, again, you need to double-check everything for reliability. For example, low-fare airlines and low-cost airlines often do not have the option of free transportation of sports equipment. And in some, the allowable weight (usually 20-23 kg) is reduced to 10 kg.

Some destinations (usually for long flights) sometimes have their own rules that allow you to carry sets of equipment of a certain weight for surfing and diving at no extra charge during certain periods.

You can also carry golf bags, hockey sticks, fishing rods, musical instruments for free, if the established norms are not violated. But if the weight, size, number of seats exceed the free rate, then all of the above will go on a flight only with a surcharge.

The passenger is obliged to discuss the transportation of such cargo with the carrier company in advance (36 hours before departure). Because it may happen that the airline does not have conditions for carrying such non-standard baggage (the size of the cargo does not correspond to the type of aircraft or baggage of this size simply cannot be placed on board). Without a preliminary agreement, it may simply not be accepted from you due to lack of free space.

If it turns out that it is not possible to organize the transportation of non-standard and heavy baggage, then it may be possible to send it as ordinary baggage with payment for exceeding the free allowance.

Transportation of fragile luggage

Very often, airline passengers have questions about what to do with fragile and breakable things. It is safest (if possible) to carry such luggage in the cabin, having issued it as hand luggage. If this is not possible, luggage is checked in at check-in with an announcement that it requires particularly careful transportation. If this option is provided by this airline, a special sticker is glued to the cargo and things are delivered on board manually, and not in the total mass of suitcases on the tape.

Experienced travelers who often fly with non-standard baggage claim that, although there are many different nuances, if you strictly follow the rules of the carrier, everything usually goes as usual.

Tip: when transporting expensive and fragile items, it is advisable to insure the baggage and send it with a declared value (this service will have to be paid).

And, of course, there is a list of items that will not be allowed to be carried in baggage under any pretext for security reasons.

What is forbidden to be transported on an airplane?

Most airlines cannot carry:

  • everything that ignites and explodes easily (including firecrackers, sparklers, flares, gunpowder, cartridges, matches, gasoline and gas lighters, solvents, paints, gasoline, acetone, ethyl alcohol and others);
  • gases of various types (liquefied, poisonous, compressed, including cartridges for burners and refills for lighters);
  • radioactive, toxic, easily oxidizing and corrosive substances (all kinds of acids, alkalis, mercury and devices containing it);
  • rechargeable (lithium-ion) batteries with a capacity of more than 160 Wh (if the power of devices is from 100 to 160 Wh, they are allowed to be transported inside the equipment with the permission of the airline, up to 100 Wh in laptops, phones, inside equipment, while spare batteries can be transported only in hand luggage);
  • any sharp, heavy, cutting objects that may be potentially dangerous to others;
  • firearms, cold steel, electric shock weapons without special permits;
  • electronic cigarettes, magnetized items.

This list is quite large. It is set out in Appendix 1 to the Rules for conducting pre-flight and post-flight inspections No. 104 dated July 25, 2007.

Are children eligible for checked baggage?

For small travelers from 2 to 12 years old, the same baggage allowance applies as for adult passengers. For babies (up to two years old) without a separate seat, free baggage allowance is allowed weighing up to 10 kg and not more than 115 cm in the sum of measurements.

Can luggage be combined?

The new rules retain the ability to combine items into one baggage at the request of passengers traveling together (two or more) under certain conditions. Moreover, one piece of such combined baggage, according to Russian rules, cannot be heavier than 30 kg and exceed 203 cm in size.

Traveling families with one suitcase are sometimes met halfway and they are forgiven for a slight advantage. But still, in practice, much depends on the captiousness of employees. In each case, this is decided individually.

It is not always possible to carry one heavy bag instead of two light bags on foreign trips: European trade unions take care of their loaders and prohibit the lifting of luggage in excess of the norm.

Naturally, there are exceptions for bulky baggage that cannot be separated (musical instruments, equipment and equipment for sports, etc.).

What to do if luggage is lost?

You landed, and your things on the tape did not appear? Don't panic. But some actions need to be taken immediately, without leaving the arrivals area. Locate the staff of the airline making the flight who are looking for lost baggage, and presenting them with a ticket, baggage ticket, passport, issue an official written request.

According to Russian laws, the search for lost baggage can take 21 days (how such a search takes place can be tracked on the website using an online service in some airlines). When the missing luggage is found, the carrier is obliged to deliver it to the address indicated by the passenger free of charge.

If, after three weeks, the luggage has not been found or has been found, but partially or completely damaged, you can apply for compensation to the airline.

International rules set the maximum amount of compensation payments in case of loss of baggage or its partial damage. In fact, in each specific situation, the amount of compensation is determined by the airline and depends on its internal rules. In case of refusal to compensate for the damage caused, you should apply to the court.

How to pay less for luggage?

Universal advice for such a case - do not take too much. Sometimes even a small advantage can cause big problems. Especially if this is a trip abroad or you have to use the services of several airlines.

Here you can not do without studying the rules that apply to different carriers along the route. Otherwise, even with an excess of 1-2 kg, you will have to pay extra. And not only this. European movers, who are prohibited by their unions from lifting luggage heavier than 32 kg, may simply refuse to deliver such a load.

Be especially careful when purchasing low-cost tickets from low-cost airlines or at a no-baggage fare. Often, in which case such tickets cannot be returned, and you will have to fly light.

Baggage restrictions may be encountered when purchasing tickets at promotional rates and promotions, when using bonuses. Such flights, at first glance, financially advantageous, sometimes offer lower baggage allowances than the standard fare, or even offer a choice of either checked baggage or hand luggage.

There is only one way out - try to take things a little less and leave at least some weight reserve up to the norm established by the carrier, which you need to familiarize yourself with in advance, and take this into account when packing your luggage at home. To do this, weighing your weight with and without luggage on floor scales, it is easy to make simple calculations and get rid of everything superfluous if something happens and repack your suitcase without hassle and fuss.

Experienced travelers are advised to put on the heaviest shoes and plenty of clothes before the flight, small heavy items can be carried in pockets. Do not take a large amount of care products and cosmetics (sometimes the cost of buying them on the spot is much less than what you have to spend on paying for the overweight).

And you can find a lot of such life hacks. Another of them is the ability to properly pack a suitcase. You can read about what you need to do to take everything you need and save on luggage in this article (Total ratings: 54, average: 4.59 out of 5)

The rules of international transportation imply certain restrictions on the carriage of baggage and hand luggage. In order for the flight to go smoothly, you need to know exactly what items you absolutely cannot take with you on board the aircraft.

You can not take with you in hand luggage on a plane:

  • sharp objects;
  • piercing objects;
  • dangerous substances;
  • liquids;
  • any weapons and explosives.

Samsung Galaxy Note 7 purchased before September 2, 2016 is not allowed due to the explosion of several devices in the hands of users. Other brands of phones can be transported in hand luggage and in the luggage compartment without any problems.

Items that cannot be carried in a bag on board an aircraft include a manicure set made of metal objects, a lighter, knitting needles, a corkscrew, a thermometer with mercury.

Items

In general, the rules for carrying items depend on the internal rules of the carrier company.

Traditionally, people take on board those items that are of the highest priority or even necessary:

  • keys;
  • money;
  • credit and debit cards;
  • passports;
  • valuable jewellery;
  • easily broken items;
  • documentation required for the flight.

Liquids

Any person has the right to take with him on the plane in hand luggage no more than 1 liter of liquid per 1 person. However, each container cannot exceed 100 ml. The concept of "Liquid" in this case may include: shampoos, creams, aerosol, shaving foam and even cosmetics (mascara, liquid lipstick, foundation).

If the container is 200 ml. only half of the shampoo is left, it will not work to bring it on board: it is not the actual amount of liquid that is taken into account, but the volume of the bottle.

The 1 liter limit does not apply to:

  • nutrition for babies;
  • specialized nutrition for patients with a supporting certificate certified by the seal of a medical institution;
  • life-saving drugs with documentation.

Why can't you bring liquids with you?

Liquids larger than 100 ml cannot be carried on an airplane because it meets safety regulations. The rule has been in effect since 2007 and is due to the fact that passengers managed to take flammable items in their hand luggage, such as alcohol, acetone and other pesticides, which pose an increased risk of ignition. In cases where the container with a liquid substance exceeds 100 ml, if desired, it can be used to create an explosive substance that poses a danger to passengers and crew members of the aircraft. In turn, 0.1 l is enough for the transport of medicines.

Medications

The transportation of medicines must be approached responsibly, because in some countries, such as Thailand, the legislation provides for serious sanctions for the transportation of medicines without the manufacturer's packaging. You need to study the local laws of the country of arrival and follow the requirements. If you have a medical prescription, it is advised to take it with you: in case of disputes, it will be easier to prove your case with official paper than just words.

If the drugs are not in tablets, but, for example, in gels, ampoules or in the form of a medical ointment, then they can be taken as a general rule in 100 ml.

In order to carry a larger volume of medicines, evidence is needed: an epicrisis, a certificate from the attending physician, a prescription indicating the amount of the necessary drug and the timing of its administration. The more documentation provided, the higher the chances of transporting the drug in excess of the established norm.

Products

You can not transport products whose export from the country is prohibited. So, for example, cheese and meat semi-finished products and finished products cannot be exported from Greece. You can’t take water with you, but you can often see people who managed to take a 0.5 liter bottle with the contents with them. You can take an empty water bottle with you: the flight attendant will gladly fill it at the request of the passenger.

You can easily take on a plane:

  • vegetables;
  • fruits;
  • chocolates;
  • bars;
  • chips;
  • sandwiches;
  • other solid products.

Honey

Many people who purchase exclusive products, incl. honey from rare exhibitions, they are interested in whether it is possible to take it on board an aircraft. According to the general rules, honey is classified as a liquid, and the carriage of such substances is limited to 100 ml.

Honey can be carried out only in micro-containers of 0.1 ml and a maximum of 10 pcs. In addition, according to the rules for transporting liquids, such jars must be packed in sealed transparent packaging. If the allowable amount is exceeded, the excess will be seized during inspection. The rules apply to most countries of the world, but before the flight it is better to check the latest information on the carrier's website.

If honey is not produced in the EU, then its import into the territory of countries such as Germany is prohibited.

Batteries

For rechargeable devices, batteries are allowed provided that they are in the device, for example, in an automatic razor. Devices must be in good working order, otherwise they may be removed.

Allowed to fly:

  • alkaline batteries;
  • rechargeable batteries;
  • lithium batteries up to 160 W power.

Not allowed for transportation on an aircraft:

  • substances that can lead to corrosion;
  • poisonous chemicals;
  • highly toxic agents;
  • gases in any state;

Hand luggage on an airplane always raises a lot of questions: what can I take with me to the cabin, and what can not? What is the maximum carry-on size and weight? What other requirements exist?

To answer these questions, I divided the article into two large blocks: in the first, an overview of the basic rules for carrying hand luggage, and in the second, a summary table with the conditions of specific airlines.

Rules for carrying hand luggage on an airplane

Classic airlines allow you to take checked baggage and hand luggage with you on a trip (at the cheapest fares, luggage can be for an additional fee, in business class it is allowed to carry twice as much). Low-cost airlines usually only allow hand luggage in the base fare.

As a rule, its dimensions are as follows: 55 cm × 40 cm × 20 cm or 115 cm in the sum of three dimensions. These dimensions vary slightly between airlines, as does the allowable weight.

It is important that not all things can be taken in hand luggage, there are also restrictions - about them below. It is better to know everything in advance so as not to be upset when your favorite manicure set or family knife is taken from you.

What can and cannot be taken as hand luggage on a plane?

The list of allowed things in the cabin is usually the same for everyone, these rules are universal. Particular attention should be paid to liquids.

  • The volume of the liquid container should not exceed 100 ml.
  • In total, you are allowed to take no more than 1 liter of liquid in hand luggage in total, that is, if you have 10 packages of 100 ml each, this is approx. It is important that all these jars must be in a resealable transparent package.
  • The security service will ask you to present this liquid during the search.

What you can take in hand luggage on the plane:

  • Electronics: laptop, tablet, camera, mobile phone, electric razor, hair dryer and other small appliances.
  • Hygiene products (safety (!) razor, toothbrush, shampoo, toothpaste, creams, varnishes, gels, balms - all up to 100 ml).
  • Musical instruments. It is better to clarify this point and all the nuances with the airline in advance.
  • Food in reasonable quantities. Nuts, fruits, vegetables, sweets, sandwiches, cakes and other solid foods. Yogurt, jam, honey, jam, soup - in packages of no more than 100 ml.
  • Drinks and alcohol in glass and plastic packages not exceeding 100 ml.
  • You can take baby food in hand luggage, within reasonable limits (the amount you need during the flight).
  • Medicines. If you are carrying too much or containing narcotic substances, you may require a prescription from a doctor.

What can not be taken in hand luggage:

  • Weapons or objects imitating weapons (including toys).
  • Gas cylinders, flammable liquids, including alcohol with a strength of more than 70%.
  • Knives.
  • Scissors.
  • All other piercing-cutting items (manicure set, forks, knitting needles, syringes, straight razor, tools).
  • Sports equipment is most often not allowed in hand luggage, but you need to check with the specific airline.
  • Any liquids in packages larger than 100 ml.
  • Liquid food and drinks in packages over 100 ml (yogurt, honey, jam).

Almost all of this can be packed into luggage. Any explosive, toxic and flammable liquids, weapons are prohibited for carriage on the plane, including in baggage.

For hand luggage, small backpacks and suitcases are suitable - now they are made specifically so that they can be taken into the cabin of the aircraft. Some airlines allow, in addition to one piece of hand luggage, to take another laptop, camera, handbag, small stroller. But the Pobeda airline, on the contrary, allows you to carry only a handbag / briefcase / umbrella in the cabin - the rest of the things must be packed in 10 kg of luggage.

Hand luggage on an airplane - comparison table by airlines

In addition to the basic rules that all airlines require to comply with, each has its own maximum dimensions and weight of hand luggage, usually within 5-10 kg. These rules often change - before buying tickets, I recommend that you familiarize yourself with the latest information on the official website of the airline on which you plan to fly.

Collected the carry-on baggage allowances of the main Russian and foreign airlines. Dimensions and weights are given for economy fares:

For example, my mother flew an S7 from Tyumen to Kaliningrad for 6,000 rubles round trip when they first introduced a promotional fare without luggage. It seems to be very cheap, but they find fault with the weight and size of hand luggage and force them to pay extra for any excess of the limits. And we flew on, and no one weighed hand luggage, much less measured it, although they have requirements, and we tried to fulfill them.

Nevertheless, it is desirable to meet the specified limits, especially for flights on low-cost airlines.

In 2017, new rules for carrying hand luggage on an airplane came out. We advise you to carefully read the list of what you can take in hand luggage and what not if you are going on an air trip. Ignorance of such subtleties, alas, can overshadow your vacation.

1. Food

You can carry any food on board the aircraft, except for liquid and jelly-like food. You can take with you:

  • nuts;
  • cookie;
  • fruits;
  • sandwiches;
  • chips, etc.

For a child, you can take baby food. But refrain from yoghurts, juices, jellies and similar products, otherwise they will be confiscated from you. They will also take canned food and food in jars. All permitted products should be packaged in transparent bags. This will greatly speed up the inspection.

It is important to take into account the specifics of the carrier and the airport. So, at the Paris airport. Charles de Gaulle is not allowed to carry cheese in hand luggage.

Products from Duty Free can also be taken with you. The main thing is that the store packaging remains undamaged (the seller must pack the goods in a special bag with a capacity of 2 liters). in addition, save the receipt - it may be required when passing control.

2. Medicines

The following medications can be carried on board the aircraft:

  • pills;
  • various drops;
  • dressing materials;
  • hydrogen peroxide.

It is better if the medicines are in undamaged original packaging, with instructions for use. Otherwise, when landing, customs officers may suspect that you are carrying prohibited substances under the guise of analgin.

If you have an injury, you can add crutches or other orthopedic aids to your hand luggage.

According to the rules, the volume of liquid in hand luggage should not exceed 100 ml. Therefore, if the medicine is liquid or in the form of a spray, make sure that the volume does not exceed what is allowed. Syringes cannot be taken on board.

3. Digital technology

What technical devices you can take on board are determined by the security regulations of the country you are traveling to. Usually, you are allowed to take in hand luggage:

  • laptop;
  • tablet;
  • mobile phone;
  • Mp3 player;
  • camera;
  • electric razor and toothbrush;
  • charging for devices;
  • voluminous electrical appliances (for example, a hair dryer).

You can (and should) also take headphones on board. If you are going to listen to music or watch a movie on a laptop, other passengers are unlikely to be happy to share this pleasure with you.

Although it is not forbidden to take a mobile phone with you, you may not need it during the flight. Often, before takeoff, phones are asked to be turned off altogether, because they can interfere with the operation of the electronic systems of the aircraft.

If you are going to take bulky equipment with you, remember the rules. Usually, the length of things in hand luggage should be no more than 56 cm, height - 45 cm, width - 25 cm. The maximum weight varies between 3-15 kilograms. The exact figure depends on the airport.

4. Documents, valuables and jewelry

In addition, you should take in your hand luggage:

  • expensive jewelry;
  • documentation;
  • valuables;
  • Wallet with money.

It is better to take your passport and other important papers with you - it’s calmer, you won’t worry about their safety all the way. In addition, if your luggage is suddenly lost, you will not be left in a foreign country without documents.

5. Cosmetics

You can carry any dry cosmetics on board:

  • shadows;
  • ink;
  • pencils for eyes and lips;
  • blush;
  • powder, etc.

Liquids, jelly-like substances in jars and bottles with a volume of more than 100 ml are strictly forbidden to be transported on board the aircraft in hand luggage. Pack them in a luggage suitcase, otherwise you risk being left without your expensive jars.

With cans under pressure on the plane is also impossible. Therefore, you will have to get rid of shaving foam and deodorants.

Remember that usually the total volume of liquids should not exceed 1 liter. therefore, if you take water with you in addition to lotion and shampoo, and their total volume exceeds the allowable one, think about what will be more important for you on board.

6. Personal hygiene items

From personal hygiene items you can take in hand luggage:

  • a toothbrush and paste (although you need to clarify about the latter - at some airports it is forbidden to take paste with you);
  • wet wipes;
  • Shaver;
  • a comb without a sharp handle (sometimes it is forbidden to carry metal combs);
  • nail polish remover without acetone with a volume of not more than 100 ml.

7. Clothes

You can take with you to the salon:

  • jacket or sweater;
  • coat;
  • plaid;
  • shawl.

In addition, you can carry a handbag, an umbrella and a walking stick.

8. Other

If you are traveling with children, in addition to hand luggage, you can take a portable cradle or stroller on board. It is not forbidden to take newspapers, magazines and other printed publications with you (without fanaticism, of course).

  • weapons, and everything that looks like it (if you have a fashion accessory in the form of a grenade or a pistol, they can be taken away);
  • piercing and cutting objects (this includes everything, even something that you would not even think of using as a tool to hurt another person, for example, knitting needles);
  • animals;
  • gas cartridges;
  • toxic substances.

A full list of prohibited items is often indicated directly on the ticket. If this list is not there, ask about this issue right at the airport.

Check the rules for dimensions, they differ for each airline. Low-cost airlines are especially serious about this issue. Low-cost airlines have a strict rule: one person - one piece of hand luggage. Therefore, everything will have to be folded into one bag or package. An exception is allowed only for folding baby carriages, crutches and outerwear.
