Which countries require an MVA

At the Vinsky Forum they ask the same question and it's pretty annoying.
The question is asked in the car rental sections. In every country. More than once.
I did not try to calculate the cyclical repetition of these questions, but sometimes the eye hurts.
Therefore, in this article I will list those countries where, when renting a car, I was asked for international driving license or IDP

To begin with, I note that it is not difficult to obtain international rights (IDP). I received them before a trip to Sri Lanka for two hours in Moscow.
The procedure for obtaining an IDP is written

List of countries where I was asked for my driving license when renting:

  • Sri Lanka
  • New Zealand(the issue is resolved by a certified translation of Russian rights into English, which is done in 30 minutes in a rental car office)

I have visited over 100 countries.
In most countries, I rented a car, booking it through the site.
ANYWHERE I was not asked for an IDL. Nowhere...

North America: Canada, USA, Mexico
South America: Colombia, Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile, Uruguay, Argentina
Africa: South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Kenya, Tanzania, Burundi, Botswana, Morocco
Europe: all European countries
Asia: ….. except Sri Lanka
Oceania: Australia, Samoa

What rights do I have: a plastic card the size of a credit card.
- Have you ever been denied a car rental?
- Never!
If they ask where the license plate number is, I show it. All

There was even such a case that I received a car in Brazil according to the rights that I independently made in the same place - in Brazil, using my passport, scanner, Photo Shop and a document laminating machine
And nothing - they gave a car, they didn’t even blink an eye

But if you still have some doubts: do you need international rights or not… —
and calm down!

Car rental from low-cost companies

There are car rental companies that gain customers through low rental prices.
As you know, free cheese is only found in mousetraps, so such low-cost companies are looking for various ways to collect additional money from the tenant.

One of the methods is described by me in the analysis of hidden payments from the GoldCar car rental company -.

Another way to take extra money is related to this topic:
– there are many cases when upon receipt of a booked car at the Goldcar office they require an IDP (international driving license).
In their absence, they offer to buy additional full insurance from them.
Therefore, if you rent a car in Italy or Spain from GoldCar, you will receive an IDP at home and pay nothing extra to GoldCar.
