Why Lviv?

Lviv can be safely called one of the most European, modern and "advanced" cities in the entire post-Soviet space. But at the same time, the traditions of celebrating the winter holidays are preserved here, so if you come here not for the New Year holidays, you can combine a real holiday revelry with modern innovations.

And that is why tourists from almost all over the world began to come here for Christmas. The breadth of the soul of the people of Ukraine has always attracted everyone, but at the same time everyone wants brilliance and chic. And Lviv will be able to give you all this! After all, this city is turning into a real fabulous place.

How is it customary to celebrate the New Year in Ukraine?

The traditions of Ukraine are unique and revered by the people of this country. In general, until the 20th century, the New Year was considered not so much a secular as a Christian and even pagan holiday.

The celebration at that time lasted as much as 12 days, and was considered a period of awakening of spirits and evil spirits. People believed that not only the living, but also the souls of the dead gather at the table, so everyone tried to appease them with treats. In addition, there was a belief according to which the heavens opened on New Year's Eve, so any wish made should come true. Any fortune-telling also came true, and everyone was happy. Then the celebration changed a little, but some of the traditions remained unchanged.

December 31 was called "generous evening". “Generosity” is a kind and cheerful custom. Children took bags and bags and went to neighbors, sang songs and recited poems, for which they received sweets. Also in the houses were waiting for "sowers" who wished everyone good, happiness, health and wealth. Such people were invited to the table and generously treated.

Today, most of the customs and traditions have been lost, but some families still remember them. But in any case, the New Year in Lviv is a time of fun and miracles.

On New Year's holidays, we decided "Why not go somewhere?" and went to Lvov.
The city is cozy, beautiful and interesting. We were there for only four days and thought that we would have enough time and still have time to get bored, but for the New Year holidays with long stays in cafes and restaurants (and there you can do it endlessly, it feels like it’s incredibly tasty everywhere) and unhurried walks of this turned out to be even few.

It took us a long time to get to Lviv: since we decided to go there for the New Year at the end of October, which turned out to be too late for buying train tickets: there were no tickets at all for the Lviv-Moscow trains. Therefore, we bought the last tickets for the Moscow-Kyiv train, deciding that the main thing was to get to Ukraine, and then we would figure it out somehow. We didn’t have any special problems with how to get to Lviv, the most difficult thing was to find where they sell bus tickets at the bus station in Kiev (it was very sad with railway tickets, i.e. there weren’t any at all). After walking for a couple of hours in Kyiv, we loaded onto the bus at 8 pm and went to our destination. The only downside to this trip was the arrival time - 4am. After sitting at the station for 4 hours and throwing things into the storage room, we went for a walk around the city. it was still a long time before check-in to the apartment (check-in was at 12, and then it was generally postponed until one in the afternoon).

Time is almost 8 am, Lvovskiy railway station

From the station you can clearly see the spiers of the Church of St. Elizabeth

We buy a map of the city near the church in a kiosk, select the goal - the Cathedral of St. George, and head there.

We were lucky with the weather, after cloudy and slushy Moscow in Lviv it was quite like spring: it was dry, sunny and there was no snow at all, it was a pleasure to walk

Finally, the owner of the apartment called us, and we went to check in. I want to say that the apartment pleasantly surprised us: there were 6 of us and it was quite difficult to find an apartment for the new year at the end of October, firstly, there were somehow few apartments designed for such a large number of people, and even most of them was ordered long before we even decided to go somewhere. After spending a couple of days searching, we found a more or less suitable option, a 2-room apartment on the street. Saksagansky, not far from the monument to Hrushevsky and Shevchenko Avenue. So, the apartment turned out to be just huge (everyone was afraid that it would be crowded - it did not look very impressive in the pictures), with spacious rooms, a bathroom and a kitchen, and the price was quite pleasant, considering the new year.
Having come to our senses after almost two days on the road, we had one goal - to eat: D.
And we went looking for the Jewish restaurant "Pid Golden Rose", where there are no prices on the menu and you have to bargain.

It was both delicious and fun, especially during the auction :) You can refuse the latter by simply asking for a bill, but the process itself pleased us and, probably, the waitress too, because we agreed to her offer to sing and dance: D. As a result, the bill was thrown off to us by half, I don’t know how much we actually ate there, but the price was fair enough for six hungry people :))))

On the morning of December 31, we had breakfast at the Centaur on Rynok Square, there are wonderful breakfasts, I especially fell in love with cocoa there, and lunches too, a very cool place.

After we wandered around the square itself, looking at the stalls of the Christmas market, and then climbed the Town Hall.

On January 1st we went to "Mons pius", a steakhouse in the courtyard next to the Armenian Cathedral. There is a very beautiful interior (unfortunately there are no photos), but I didn’t like the service at all. The food was carried terribly slowly, the waiters did not even bother to inform that there were no dishes from the menu until they were persistently reminded of the order, only then they could get the answer "oh, but this is not today." Perhaps this is how New Year's Eve affected, but the impression still spoiled.
Courtyard near the restaurant:

Inside the Armenian Cathedral

We go towards the Lychakiv cemetery (it's time - it's already getting dark: D), we pass by the Lviv chocolate workshop, the sweets there are really tasty, but expensive:

We pass some kind of "medical" area - there are only hospitals and buildings of some kind of medical university (as we understood)

And here is the Lychakiv necropolis itself, at the entrance it is written that shooting for an additional fee. fee, but no one keeps track of it. And in my opinion, there are more visitors late in the evening than in the afternoon, at least when we left it was already dark, and people walking with flashlights did not decrease :)

Having thoroughly frozen, we decided to go to a coffee shop, the "Golden Ducat" was closed, we went to "Svit Kavi". Because of the holidays, there are a lot of people everywhere, you have to wait until a table is free. For some reason, in this place on the first floor there is self-service, and on the second floor the waitresses themselves come up to you, bring the menu, and then the order (there were two times, they sat on the first and second floors and did not understand what was the matter whether in the number of guests, or indeed in the room of the floor). But there is very tasty hot chocolate, it seems it was called "According to Vidensky")

We went to the House of Scientists in the evening, and I even thought we would not get there, it was already late, but some uncle took pity on us and for a nominal fee opened the door for us, turned on the lights everywhere and gave an impromptu tour of the House in Ukrainian, half of which we did not understand, but the uncle was very talkative)

There is also a Christmas market on the square in front of the Opera House

This city falls in love with itself from the first time. If you have been to Lviv at least once, you will definitely return to it. This atmosphere of the old streets, mixed with the aroma of coffee, enchants, leaving its imprint on the map of even the most hardened traveler. And even if there are thousands of tourists in Lviv during the New Year holidays, this will not stop you from enjoying this amazing city. So, the best options for how to spend the main night of the year in the most beautiful place in Ukraine.

In a good hotel

This is the most banal option that you can think of, but even in Lviv it has a special charm. Choose decent hotels (at least four stars) in the old part of the city. Every morning you will enjoy an excellent cup of coffee with views of the unique architecture.

. Nota Bene Hotel

The rooms of this hotel are decorated in a classic style. This is an elegant, traditional place that will make you feel like a special guest in Lviv. It is important that the hotel is located within walking distance from the unique Church of Saints Olga and Elizabeth.

How much: from 1 500 gr

. hotel "Leopolis"

You won't find a more central location. From "Leopolis" a few minutes walk to any main attraction of the city: for example, to the very Rynok Square you need to walk only a hundred meters. You need to choose this hotel for New Year's Eve at least in order to relax: there is a small spa center with a sauna. Just what you need on cold winter nights! True, it is difficult to call the price of rooms democratic.

How much: from 2 500 gr

. Atlas Deluxe Hotel

A hotel of stunning beauty. This is a classic at its best. Atlas Deluxe belongs to the category of hotels where in the evenings you want to sit in an old English armchair by the window in the lobby and watch the falling snow outside the window with a glass of red French wine ... In general, the photos speak for themselves. The price for the room bites, but it's worth it.

How much: from 4 700 gr

. hotel "Nobilis"

This sophisticated hotel is relatively new, having opened about five years ago. Dozens of luxurious carpets and antique furniture were used in its interior. In the lounge bar, live music plays in the evenings, and in the restaurant, in addition to Ukrainian, you can taste haute European cuisine.

How much: from 5 000 gr

In a concept cafe

For most tourists, the question “How to spend Christmas and New Year in Lviv?” obvious. Many people come here solely to go on a gastronomic trip to the most famous conceptual establishments not only in Lviv, but throughout Ukraine. Remember: food is not the main thing here!

! Prices for the average check are indicated for an ordinary weekday. On New Year's Eve, the cost of dinner is set by the establishment.

. cafe "Masoch-cafe"

This institution can delight emotional personalities, or it can upset people of a conservative nature. But indifferent will not be for sure! In a cafe, not only are they promoted, but rather, all the delights of light masochism are welcomed. However, one should not think that the institution was opened for people with a perverted fantasy. The fact is that the infamous writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch was born in Lviv. In honor of him, a cafe was opened. Here, waitresses are "ladies", erotic films on plasma screens and all sorts of mouth-watering perversions on the menu.

How much: average bill from 120 gr

. Bandera cafe "Kryivka"

It is not at all surprising that this cafe is the most visited in all of Western Ukraine. Every year, more than two million guests have breakfast, lunch and dinner here. If you want to get here for the New Year, then take care of booking in advance: we do not exclude that there are no more free places. If you decide to get here on any other day, you will surely encounter a queue of several dozen people. Our tip: The restaurant is open 24/7, so come here at night or early in the morning. As a rule, there are no queues at this time.

How much: average check from 200 gr

. Jewish cafe "Under the Golden Rose"

The menu of this incredibly atmospheric place does not even have prices. But what else should be in a Jewish cafe? You have to bargain with the waiter for the check, gentlemen! The interior of the cafe has a lot of authentic and antique items. Even the lace tablecloths are embroidered by hand. In addition, only here in Lviv you will taste impeccably prepared dishes of Jewish cuisine: hummus, matzah and much, much more.

How much: average check from 200 - 250 gr

. restaurant "Masonic Lodge"

This restaurant doesn't even have a sign. But behind the gray, shabby door hides a luxurious interior and gourmet cuisine. This is precisely the unique concept that immerses such a phenomenon as Freemasonry into the closed world. This is a closed place for the elite. It should be noted that the restaurant is the most expensive in the city. However, if you see coffee for 200 hryvnias on the menu, then don’t be too scared: for owners of the Local tourist card, you can get a 90% discount on the entire menu.

How much: average check from 250 gr (including 90% discount)

On Market Square

You can celebrate the New Year in Lviv in such a banal, but no less exciting way, how to simply go to the central square of the city. This is a sophisticated and architecturally perfect place where hundreds of tourists gather every day. Here, as in any European central square, the best establishments, souvenir shops and points with local street food are collected. In summer, dozens of summer terraces open here, and on New Year's Eve, a stunning Christmas market opens.

In the center of the square you will see the City Hall. Be sure to climb it! This is one of the best views of festive Lviv. From a bird's eye view, snow-covered roofs and bizarre bends of narrow streets will open up to your eyes ...

Also from Rynok Square you can get to the so-called Italian courtyard. This is a cozy, quiet place where the rumble from the square does not reach. At one time, a local merchant could afford such a luxury. This is the so-called "minute of Italy" in Lviv. For a second it will seem to you that you find yourself, for example, in romantic Florence or Verona ...

"Coffee" New Year in Lviv

This city is unthinkable without coffee. And on New Year's holidays, you can wrap yourself in this aroma from head to toe and appreciate the best drink in the most famous coffee houses in the city. The tradition not to start the morning without a cup of fragrant drink dates back to the eighteenth century, when the Austrians came to the territory of Western Ukraine. And if at first only representatives of the upper strata of society could afford a morning in a coffee shop, then over time this tradition went “to the people”. They say that more than forty-five types of coffee are prepared here ... Try at least ten!

"Beer" New Year in Lviv

Not only coffee is one. Excellent beer is also brewed in Lviv. It is best to taste it in local restaurants. We recommend spending New Year's Eve at the Mon Pius restaurant, which is hidden in the old streets. At one time, the first pawnshop bank in Lviv was located in the building of the institution. To food and drink here is a "non-tourist approach." In the sense that the dishes do not go on stream, as in most popular places. The local chef tries to surprise every guest, focusing on the meat of Ukrainian producers. For a steak, of course, order a beer. It is prepared here in its own brewery, and connoisseurs will definitely note the quality of this drink.

"Chocolate" New Year in Lviv

Another option where to celebrate the New Year in Lviv is “chocolate”. Along with the coffee culture, the Austrians brought to this city a love for delicious sweets. A huge number of confectionery and chocolate shops opened in Lviv. Sweet foods were transported to various cities in Central Europe. Today, the most famous chocolate shop is Lviv Chocolate Workshop. The choice of sweets here is simply cosmic: you can buy both individually and in special sets.
