Cayo largo on the map of cuba. Fishing, spearfishing, yachting

In the very center of the Cuban archipelago, a paradise island called Cayo Largo is successfully located. It is located about 80 km south of the Big Island. The length of Cayo Largo is 28 km, and its width is no more than 3 km. Despite such a small size, the island has several beaches at once, each of which has white sand. The total length of the beaches here is quite large and is almost 20 km.

There are no permanently living Cubans on the island at all. All the inhabitants of Cuba settle down in a small village called Isla del Sol. But they come to Cayo Largo only to work in local hotels.

The island is suitable only for vacationers. Most of it is occupied by beaches and several hotels. The rest of the territory of Kyle Largo still remains unknown to anyone and tourists are rare guests there.

What to bring?

For a holiday in Cuba, it is advisable for tourists to take out travel medical insurance in advance. But you do not need a visa to enter, of course, if the vacation does not last more than 30 days.

How to get there?

You can fly to the island by plane. Such an opportunity has appeared quite recently. A modern airport was built on Cayo Largo, which can receive any international flights. The airport is called Vilo Acuna. But from there you can take a taxi to your hotel. The fare in such transport will be approximately $ 8.

If you wish, you can immediately go from the airport to one of the local beaches, for example, Playa Sirena, Playa Paraiso or Punta mal Tiempo. Shuttle basses regularly go to them on the island. Travel to them is free, and they always leave exactly on schedule at 9:00, 10:30 and 11:30.

Since the size of the island is rather small, there is only one main road here. It connects the port, airport and all hotels. From the main road there are several more small ones, but it is already more difficult to drive along them, since they are all mostly sandy.

It is quite possible to move around Cayo Largo on your own, or rather, rent a transport that is convenient for you on your own. Of course, jeeps are popular here, by which you can get anywhere and on any road. Renting this type of transport will cost about 50-60 dollars a day. But on the other hand, it will be possible to get to any point on the island without any problems and enjoy the local landscapes.

A more budget option to rent is a scooter. It will be possible to rent it for 19-24 dollars per day.

Well, the most budgetary form of transport in Cayo Largo is a bicycle. It can be rented at any hotel for free.

Beaches

All beaches on Cayo Largo are geographically divided between hotels, but nevertheless they are all open to tourists, since they are all municipal. That is why all vacationers can take any sunbed or umbrella, even if it is in close proximity to a completely different hotel.

Here, vacationers are allowed quite a lot. If desired, you can even sunbathe without a top. And for this you do not need to look for special places or beaches. But if you want to lie down on the snow-white sand without a swimsuit at all, then it’s better to get away from the crowds of vacationers so as not to offend conservative Cubans and tourists.

If you move from west to east, the beaches will be located as follows. First Playa Sirena, then Playa Paraiso, after him Punta Mal Tiempo, then Playa Lindamar, Playa Blanca, Playa Los Cocos and Playa Tortuga.

Playa Sirena has several bars and restaurants. You can also buy some food, clothes or souvenirs here. Those who want to do one of the water sports can use the services of the water sports center.

Playa Paraiso also has bars. In addition, you can find umbrellas and sunbeds here.

Punta Mal Tiempo beach is wild, so there are not many vacationers here.

There are several hotels near Playa Linadamar beach: Sol Caya Largo, Sol Pelicano, Villa Lindamar, Villa Soledad, Villa Coral, Isla del Sur and Playa Blanca.

The beaches of Playa Blanca, Playa Los Cocos, Playa Tortuga are just the ones where you can relax and sunbathe completely naked. Sat down here to meet a tourist, then most likely they will be in this form. But, as a rule, vacationers come here quite rarely.

What to try?

The island has a grill bar, The Ranchons, which is popular among tourists. From the food here you can try lobsters and giant prawns. But for this you need to make an order in advance. This bar is in a good location. Near it are the hotels Sol Cayo Largo, Sol Pelicano, Villa Lindamar and Playa Blanca.

Holidays in 2019

Since all the beaches of the island are concentrated on the south coast, then, accordingly, all the hotels are in close proximity to them. The length of the line of hotels is almost 5 km. Expensive to them from the international airport is only 10 minutes.

Each hotel on the island has its own characteristics. So, in a hotel called Gran Caribe, beach towels can be replaced by the attendants right in the room. They can be changed every day.

At the Sol Pelicano, Sol Cayo Largo and Playa Blanca hotels, vacationers can change their beach towel for a clean one right by the pool. They change them in a building called Club House. Any change of towels is absolutely free, for those staying at the hotel, as the all-inclusive system works everywhere. But if the beach towel is lost, then the penalty for this will be $20.

Each of the hotels on the island has its own swimming pools. Therefore, tourists can swim in the blue water of the Caribbean Sea at any time of the day or night, they are open around the clock. The only exception is the Villa Soledad hotel. It does not have its own swimming pool. Buffet restaurants are always open for vacationers. As a rule, in each of them the serving time of the dish is approximately the same. Breakfast starts at 7:00 and can last until 10:30, lunch from 13:00 to 14:45, and dinners from 19:30 to 22:00. In addition to food and drinks, hotel guests can also drink alcohol. It is not necessary to pay its cost additionally, it is also included in the all-inclusive service.

As a rule, most resorts prohibit the use of water that flows from the tap in hotel rooms. But Cayo Largo is an exception in this regard. You can drink water, but only it is not very tasty. Therefore, if you wish, you can buy mineral or ordinary water in the nearest bar.

Where to go on vacation in 2019?

In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner, which are included in the price of hotel services, you can go to one of the snack bars on the beach. Here you can have a very tasty meal. They are on the beaches at the Sol Caya Largo hotel called Sol Azul, at the Sol Pelicano hotel the ZunZun bar, next to the Barcelo hotel the Opalino snack bar and at the Isla del Sur hotel the Medusa bar.

There are also several a la carte restaurants. They are open to visitors only during lunch. These include Las Trinas and Lindarena, where dishes are grilled at the Sol Cayo Largo hotel, La Yana and Los Quelonios, where Creole dishes are served, they are located at the Sol Pelicano hotel, a restaurant with Creole cuisine at the Villa Lindamar hotel called Espigon , and at the Playa Blanca, the a la carte restaurant with Creole cuisine and Vela Mar fish dishes.

All a la carte restaurants on Cayo Largo differ in that a table in them must be booked in advance. They also have their own dress code, so you need to dress accordingly. In seasons when there are very few tourists on the island, some establishments are closed. As a rule, this period begins in May and ends in November.

There are several other establishments where you can eat and drink a drink for an additional fee. These include a bar in Playa Sirena, where you can taste delicious shrimp and lobster, a bar in Playa Paraiso, where in addition to hot dogs you can drink beer and cocktails, in the El Torreon restaurant you can order pizza and try fish dishes, in the Taberna del Pirata bar there are own outdoor terrace.

From entertainment in Cayo Largo there is a disco La Movita. You can find it in the village. Nightlife here starts from 23:00 to 2:00. Beer can be purchased for $1 and cocktails for $2. The disco is especially popular with salsa lovers.

Climate

The weather here is stable. Throughout the year, high humidity is felt in the air. If we talk about when the weather is good, then the period begins in November and ends in April. At this time, the most comfortable temperature is here, there is no longer a sweltering heat. Even for children the climate becomes more acceptable.

shopping

Cayo Lango is not the best place for shopping lovers. The assortment of local shops is not the most diverse. In any of them you can find rum, souvenirs, postcards, clothes, snacks, drinks, mineral water and chocolate. In the shops of some hotels you can still find cigars and tobacco.

Connection

Internet on the island is far from everywhere and not always. 24/7 Internet access is only available at the Sol Cayo Largo, Sol Pelicano, Playa Blanca and Isla del Sur hotels. But you should not hope for good speed, the connection is rather slow.

What to bring from a holiday in Cuba?

What to bring from Cuba? Of course, rum. On Cayo Largo, you can buy Havana Club rum with a 7-year exposure. The cost of one bottle of 750 ml is $12.

You can also buy Cuban coffee. It is sold both ground and in grains.

Excursions

From entertainment, you can choose a catamaran cruise, which will cost about $ 70, a sunset cruise for $ 50, an excursion to Havana for $ 290. In addition, you can go deep sea fishing, snorkeling or visit the island of Trinidad.

To see the coral reef, you will need to swim to the island of Cayo Rico. The tour includes a lobster lunch and a visit to a wild island.

If you are all looking for a place that looks like heaven on earth, then you can't go wrong if you choose to visit Cayo Largo island.

Located 177 kilometers south of the outskirts of the province of Havana, Cayo Largo is the largest eastern of the many coral reefs that make up the Archipelago de los Cannareos. This either an island or a vision is boomerang-shaped, while its low-lying strips of land boast some of the most beautiful beaches on.

Sugar white sands stretch along almost 20 kilometers of coastline. Moreover, they dissolve in the transparent clear turquoise water of the ocean, by the way, in which snorkeling and diving is just a pleasure.

Tell me honestly, did you like this little lyrical introduction? I think yes. After all, that's how I got to Cayo Largo in Cuba.

Most of the vacationers I met here flew here from Europe and for about a week. It would be pointless to stay here for a longer time, because the options for the daily routine will end with you in 5 days maximum.

Relaxing on the beach, diving and drinking prevail here over all other activities. Given the distance from the mainland and the relatively small number of potential things to do there, the most I still had enough imagination for was an evening trip to Havana and Varadero.

I say right away that I will not go into the details of traveling to other Cuban cities, I will focus all my attention directly on Cayo Largo. So, let's begin.

I'll start right away with the shortcomings. In fact, you won’t see Cubans here, even hotel workers are stationed here so far from hotels that you won’t actually see the spirit of the country itself.

Most of the social services that you would certainly like to find in Cayo Largo are located in the neighboring village of El Pueblo, located five kilometers from the resort. And, by the way, I recommend taking a more detailed approach to choosing a hotel. The fact is that there are only six of them, and they all differ markedly. There is a rather boring Hotel Club Cayo Largo, an attractive four-star hotel Sol Cayo Largo, a small fishing resort Villa Marinera and a couple of nondescript hotel houses.

I want to note right away that all hotels work here on a permanent basis, have the slogan "all inclusive" and they are concentrated in the Playa Paraiso area, where the wave height, as a rule, is ideal for all water sports.

You know, in the week that I spent here, I learned how to stand here on a surfboard, I got tired of eating grilled meat on the beach, and so I went on almost all the excursions available.

I was particularly impressed by the dozens of uninhabited reefs scattered like diamonds throughout the sapphire sea, including Cayo Iguana. This reef was named after a huge population of endemic giant lizards, seemingly harmless creeping reptiles, but in fact they are dangerous.

I'll tell you straight away how to get to cayo largo. Recently, it has been possible without problems, due to the international airport built here. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights here from Moscow, so I had to fly to Havana first, and then transfer to a small plane, which took me to the archipelago.

By the way, in addition to the transfer bus towards my hotel, I noticed that free shuttle buses run directly from the airport to the most popular beaches on Cayo Largo. The original idea - you will not say anything.

At all flights to Cuba and Cayo Largo I ordered through the Internet service for the sale of air tickets aviasales.ru. At first I tried to find a direct flight, but realizing that it was not cost-effective, I had to sacrifice time for a transfer.

To Havana, the price of an air ticket was 100 thousand rubles, while Airfare from Havana to Cayo Largo at this stage of time is about 2 thousand rubles one way.

I also learned that if your hotel does not provide you with a shuttle, then you can also use a private taxi service.

In this case, for $ 5 you will be delivered to your place of residence, and on the way they will tell you in broken English, Russian or German about all the hardships of living in Cuba, excursions available to tourists and much more.

When I was driving back to the airport, I specifically decided to use a taxi, and a local taxi driver told me that Cayo Largo del Sur, also known simply as Cayo Largo, is the second largest island in Cuba after Los Canarreos .

Cayo Largo island on the map located a little south of the island of Cuba itself. Its length is about 25 kilometers long and 3 kilometers wide. And these are incredibly small sizes - even for Cuba, despite the fact that a fifth of the island is reserved for the airport, and another two-fifths are just an area with dense vegetation.

So now you understand that people usually come here to take a break from civilization, drink rum and smoke cigars and nothing more.

Personally, as a tourist who prefers outdoor activities, I have already bypassed all the borders of the island on the second day after arrival. So in the future I had to be content with various beaches and visiting numerous coral reefs.

By the way, a few words about the local beaches. Cayo Largo is located within the borders of Cuba in such isolation that many here, as a rule, are accustomed to sunbathing completely naked. The real official nudist beach here is Playa Los Cocos, although in other deserted areas you can meet lovers of frank tanning.

It seemed to me that the thin beach line, strewn with white sand, has some kind of hard layer, so that it is quite easy to walk on the sand even barefoot (which is why I walked the entire island from start to finish in a couple of days).

The best beaches on the western side are Playa Sirena and Playo Paraiso, which are about a kilometer apart, which, given the natural features of the sand, is a relatively short distance (10 minutes walk).

What is most interesting is that at a certain period of time, local authorities, if they can be called such, forbid going to the beach at all, because the time for laying turtle eggs begins. And since turtles are loved and revered here more than people, it will not be possible to disobey such an “order” even with all the desire - all beaches will be guarded by special law enforcement officers.

Now a few words about the Internet. If you tell your relatives before departure that you want to contact them via the Internet, then, I hasten to assure you, you are unlikely to get through to them.

The internet speed here is so slow that it takes about 30 minutes even to open an e-mail. You might say, well, let's wait. But no. Internet here is paid and costs 10 pesos for one hour of use.

Moreover, there are only keyboards with Spanish layout. Of course, you can and will be able to write in Latin, but those who have passwords for mail or social networks written in Russian will have a hard time.

As for excursions and other entertainment that does not include rum and cigars, I would like to highlight an interesting, almost 10-hour long catamaran cruise that costs 70 pesos.

For 10 hours you can go diving, swim with dolphins, walk along the coral reefs and finally get drunk on Cuban rum. In general, the prices for excursions to Cayo Largo are incredibly affordable, even though quite rich tourists come here. Cubans don't use it and I like it. We would already have tripled the cost on some Americans.

If you want to visit Havana, I recommend that you prepare an itinerary for a trip to the Cuban capital in advance. The fact is that a real tour with a guide will cost about 300 pesos, while you can put 200 pesos on your own, and even get more impressions.

A ticket from the airport to Cayo Largo to Havana costs 140 pesos round-trip, and on the spot, every second resident of the city agrees to see all the sights of the city for 20 pesos. The main thing is to beware of scammers, but they are usually visible from afar.

In addition, do not be too lazy to buy cigars in Havana, especially since there is a whole factory for their production there. And, of course, try the local coffee. It will be difficult for him to compete with the Argentinean, but he can be given a well-deserved second place.

Summing up my journey, I would like to say that, first of all, I expected something more from the trip to Cayo Largo, but this is due to the fact that I am not used to sitting still.

If you want to take a break from the outside world, you don’t like excursions, you are ready to lie on the beach for a whole week, while having no connection with the rest of the world, then a holiday in Cayo Largo will be the best option for you for such a pastime. As they say, everyone has their own idea of paradise.

Getting to the island of Cayo Largo is both difficult and simple.
It is difficult for independent tourists to get there - air tickets to Cayo Largo just like that (online through well-known booking systems) are not sold.
Just package travelers who bought a tour to Cayo Largo from the Cuban government travel agency or agencies associated with the Cuban government travel agency.

I bought flights to Cayo Largo (Havana - Cayo Largo) and booked a hotel in Cayo Largo - in different places and I can say that this is not the best option.
I recommend doing this as a set (tickets + hotel) in one place.
I’ll tell you with my own example how all tourists (both package travelers and independent) get to Cayo Largo from Havana.
Step by step.

Departure time unknown

Having ordered and paid for air tickets on the Spanish site xxx (it no longer works), I received a voucher (not air tickets, but a voucher) in which it was written that the flight from Havana to Cayo Largo was on April 18, and the flight back was on April 21.
Departure time and location were not specified.

The voucher says that the day before departure, you need to call the Cuban state tour operator Cubatur and make a confirmation, saying the reference number indicated in the voucher and the data of the passengers.
And then you should be told the place from where you will be picked up and the time of the meeting.

It is highly discouraged, and it is expressly stated in the voucher, to plan international flights on the day of departure to Cayo Largo round trip.
That is, you need to have housing in Havana on the way there and back.
As I pointed out, the departure time is unknown: it can be both early in the morning and in the evening - as the Cubans' cards fall.

Transfer to Playa Baracoa airport

You can't take a taxi to the airport on your own.
You need to use a bus transfer that collects tourists from hotels in Havana.
If you are staying in a casa particular in Havana, then you will have to go to one of the hotels in Havana where tourists are taken from.
You will also have to find out about this by calling Kubatura the day before.

During the first call, we were assigned the Hotel Florida at 2:00 pm
During the second call (an hour later), we were assigned the Melia Havana hotel at 15:00
Just in case, calling Cubatour in the morning on the day of departure, we found out that now the meeting point has been moved to the Havana Libra hotel at 14:00.

It was the starting point of the bus that went around the hotels in Havana, so we had the dubious pleasure of traveling around Havana for 2 hours.
I understand that all tourists have a very approximate departure time - just like us at 14:00.
They sit and wait for the transfer in the hotel lobby.
If you are not on the spot, the bus will not wait and the tickets will be lost because tourists are not accepted at the airport by taxi.

Check-in for a flight to Cayo Largo

The bus brings tourists to a building that resembles a cafe in an open field.
Everyone is lined up at the door.
Queuing is a favorite pastime for Cubans, and they seem to think that other people also enjoy standing in lines.

2-3 people are allowed into the room where they register for the flight.
If you have nothing to do, try to walk around the district - 20 meters from the “airport”, the police will stop you and send you back under a canopy.
At check-in, you check in your luggage and get a boarding pass without a seat.

Next, you need to go to the next stage, to the passage of the scanner and the frame of the metal detector.
The scanner reveals lighters in hand luggage and takes them away.
Inside the waiting room there is a smoking room and a cafe where you can buy beer and chips.

After everyone goes through the procedures and accumulates in the waiting room, the door opens and, in turn, they let you into the field along which you go to the plane.
Aircraft ATR turboprop, landing in the cabin 2-2.
Travel time to Cayo Largo is 35 minutes.

Arrival to Cayo Largo and transfer to hotels

Arriving at Cayo Largo, whose airport looks more presentable than Havana, and having received your luggage, you need to get to your hotel.
A guide arrives with a list and notes in it who is going to which hotel.
Then you have to wait for the bus.

In our case, 50 people were waiting for the bus sitting on the steps of the arrivals hall.
At the same time, empty buses passed by.
After a long wait, a bus arrived where tourists with reservations were put in two hotels: Sol and Pelican.

Check in hotel

After our bus pulled up to the lobby of the Sol Cayo Largo hotel, tourists poured out of it and lined up at the reception.
The person who was there before seeing us ran away somewhere.
I don’t know - maybe take a shit or have dinner: the hands of the clock were approaching 19:00 (our journey began at 14:00).

After about 20 minutes, he appeared and began to slowly serve tourists.
One man.
30 tourists.
Someone who, apparently, was here not for the first time, calmly went to the bar for cocktails and by the time of check-in was already pretty drunk.

I booked a room in the luxury category at this hotel - ocean view, superior.
Having submitted our passports, we found out the number of our room, but then the person went out somewhere (probably to piss), and upon returning he announced that the hotel was full and they would give us a standard room for one night.
I booked the hotel 2 months before.

No options like “call the elder”, “we will complain” - had no effect.
Dude with a straight face began to serve those who stood in line behind us.
Feeling like a complete schmuck, we agreed to the proposed option - we wildly wanted to take a shower and eat.

Flight back to Havana

You will find out the time of departure to Havana the day before, in the evening.
Two flights to Havana.
One morning at 8:20 (pickup from the hotel at 6:45)
The second evening at 17 with a penny.

As the dude at the reception said - the choice of when you fly is completely random, a lottery.
Of course, we did not believe him: in Cuba, bribery is rampant, so someone slipped 20 cookies at the reception and asked for a late flight.
Or, as in our case: I put in 20 cookies and got a room upgrade from standard to superior, and the one who booked and paid for the superior, but fundamentally does not give bribes (for example, me) stomps into the standard.

We were extremely pleased to have an early flight.
By this time, we decided to leave Cuba as quickly as possible and we did not need a few extra hours on the island of Cayo Largo, although the booking indicated “late check-out at 15:00 for our room category.

When registering for a flight, everyone asked what airport the plane was arriving at.
The staff answered that they were arriving at Playa Baracoa airport.
Nevertheless, the plane landed at the Jose Marti airport in Havana, which we were very happy about, as we were going to immediately buy tickets to Costa Rica and leave the “island of freedom”.

It is interesting that on the way the plane made an intermediate stop on the Isla de la Juventud, and everyone, not knowing about it, rushed to the exit.
And only the intervention of the pilot, who announced on the speakerphone in Spanish - this is not Havana! stopped the mass exodus from the plane into the rain.

At Havana's José Marti International Airport, the Aerogaviots stopped in the middle of a field next to Cubana's IL-96 and brought a bus to take them to the Domestic Terminal.
Taxi-Bus $1 was written on board the bus
And although they didn’t take money upon delivery from the airfield to the terminal, I wouldn’t be surprised if they opened the front door and let all the passengers pass.

So far, all the tourists were scratching their heads and thinking about their “free transfer” to their hotel in Havana.
We took a taxi for 5 kuk (VAZ-2105 with doors falling off), after 15 minutes we were in the departure hall of Havana International Airport and bought tickets to Costa Rica via Mexico for $ 1150 in cash (there were simply no other options to fly), we said goodbye to Cuba now already for sure forever - enough of the “charms” of the island of “freedom” from us.

Tickets that were bought a month ago for today are, of course, gone.
We paid a thousand bucks for the fact that in the evening, having arrived at the San Jose airport without any tip, book a room at the Holiday Inn near the airport, have a normal dinner at a restaurant opposite, sleep, have a normal breakfast and take the car one day earlier: it's possible here, without bribes and tips.

On the island you will find more than 27 kilometers of white coral beaches with almost virgin nature. All beaches are public, anyone can relax on them, no matter what hotel he stays in. You can move between the beaches on a small tourist train. Nudists and lovers of topless sunbathing can easily find a secluded place for themselves.

Lindamar Beach (Playa Lindamar) located in the center of the island and is the most popular. It has a length of 5 kilometers and it is on it that all the hotels are located.

Sirena Beach (Playa Sirena) has a length of 2 kilometers. It is interesting for tourists primarily due to the water entertainment center and the absence of waves. The beach also has restaurants, bars and small shops.

Paradise Beach (Playa Paraiso). From the infrastructure there is only a bar and umbrellas with sunbeds.

Punta Mal Tiempo Beach located in the western part of the island. Lovers of secluded relaxation will like it here. There is no infrastructure.

White Beach (Playa Blanca), Cocos Beach (Playa Los Cocos) and Tortuga Beach (Playa Tortuga) are located in the western part of the island and are known for their frequent iguanas, pelicans, sea turtles and nudists.
