Charleston is the perfect weekend destination. Not only are there historical buildings to admire endlessly and cobbled streets you can stroll along for days, there is also excellent cuisine and plenty of interesting entertainment. In 2016, Charleston was voted the best city in the world, beating out cities such as Florence, Barcelona and Cape Town. It's time to find out what Charleston has to offer visitors. Why is it so attractive and why was it able to bypass the leading European tourist destinations?

What is this city?

Charleston is a port city on the coast of South Carolina. Its population is about 133 thousand people as of 2015.
It was named the best city in the world in 2016 and is visited by approximately 4.3 million tourists every year.
To get to Charleston, you'll have to fly two and a half hours from New York. Round-trip flights cost you $240 during the busiest season, April to June, and $200 during the less busy season, September to October. These months are considered the best to visit this city.
Charleston is probably best known for its historical beauty.

Historical value

It was founded in 1670 by English colonists and got its name in honor of King Charles II of England. By the 18th century, Charleston had become one of the key colonial ports in the South, producing rice, cotton, and indigo for sale.
The historic architecture dates from the years before the Civil War. According to the tourist report, after the war the city did not have much money, so it was necessary not to rebuild, but to restore damaged buildings. Thus, many of the buildings remain original. Today, most tourists are attracted to the historical district of the city, where you can find a large number of bars, restaurants and shops.
Tourists can take a horse-drawn carriage ride to see as many of the incredible preserved old houses as possible.
King Street, the main shopping street, is the busiest in the French Quarter. Here you will find both fashion boutiques and more affordable chain stores. However, the courtyard streets give the city the greatest charm.
On the coast there are the most luxurious houses overlooking the sea. A walk along the boardwalk will take you to The Battery, a park and war memorial located at the very tip of Charleston's peninsula.
From there, you can see the Fort Sumter memorial, where the first shots were fired in 1861 to start the Civil War.

Culinary appeal

Charleston has also become a haven for food lovers. One of the city's most popular restaurants, FIG, was named one of America's Best Restaurants in 2016. Its chef, Mike Lata, was also nominated for Best Chef in the Country that same year.
Naturally, there are quite a few not so loud establishments here. For example, you can head to 167 Raw, a restaurant that was named one of the best places to eat this spring.
There you can enjoy an extensive seafood menu and oyster bar. You can stay inside or go outside to eat in the mini-garden.
Around the corner from this restaurant is the Zero George Street Hotel, which has its own restaurant. It is difficult to reserve a table here, but if you are unable to do so in advance, don't despair as you can still enjoy a cold drink and snack on the veranda.
The northern part of the city has also attracted the attention of food lovers. King Street is home to a wealth of unique establishments, creative cocktail bars, amazing restaurants and new hotels.
Further north you'll find a popular spot that everyone goes to for breakfast - Hominy Grill. Headed by award-winning chef Robert Stehling, you can enjoy classic Southern dishes like breaded shrimp, fried chicken, and creamy catfish.

Nearby beaches

Another advantage of Charleston is its proximity to the sea. You can choose from many beaches available, but the best is Sullivan's Island, located twenty minutes from Charleston.
There you can see impressive private houses right on the seafront.

Visit to plantations

And finally, visit one of the plantations that played a very important role in the history of Charleston. In 1860, South Carolina had as many slaves as Georgia and Virginia, but South Carolina was half the size.
Head to Magnolia Plantation, which was founded in 1676 and was dedicated to rice farming. It is now the oldest public garden in the United States.
If you're planning to visit Charleston, try to avoid the wet season, which runs from July to August. It is better to plan a visit for spring or autumn.

Charleston South Carolina is a city that is a keeper of history, an open-air museum, here every street and house is imbued with many years of history, unique architecture that gives Charleston special shades of charm and a bit of European character.

Charleston South Carolina

The city is located on the Atlantic coast in South Carolina between the Cooper and Ashley rivers. All Americans should visit this city to study the history of the country first-hand, so to speak.

Story

The city was founded by English colonists in 1670, and named after King Charles II - Charles Towne, later renamed Charleston, which grew from a colonial port into a wealthy city by the mid-eighteenth century. In the mid-nineteenth century, Charleston's economy flourished due to its busy seaport as well as numerous rice, cotton, and coffee plantations.

In April 1861, Fort Sumter near Charleston was fired upon by soldiers, signaling the start of the bloodiest Civil War in history. Charleston was very slow to recover from the destruction of the war, but it became one of the city's main goals due to the huge list of historically significant buildings, so Charleston was forced to restore damaged buildings instead of replacing them.

After the war, the city became less and less dependent on the agricultural industry, and gradually rebuilt its economy towards trade and industry. During the first decades of the 1900s, Charleston's industrial and port activities boomed, and later tourism, a naval base, and the medical industry became the main sources of capital. Today, approximately 4,510,000 people visit Charleston annually.

Walk through the historical center or cart tour.

Tour Downtown Charleston by Wagon

Every square meter of Charleston is literally imbued with history? so would I recommend taking a tour? if this is var first visit. After all, you will agree that it is more interesting with a guide. He will show you the most interesting places in the center of Charleston and tell you many educational stories. There are both walking and horseback tours. Should you choose? which one is closer to your liking. The cart tour lasts about 40 minutes and costs $22 (be sure to ask for a coupon at the hotel where you are staying and they will give you a $2 discount). As a last resort, go to Wikipedia and print out about the city, it will be more interesting to walk along the ancient streets.

Ghost Tour.

Yes, yes, he is the ghost tour. The fact is that Charleston turns into a ghost town at night. Many residents often encounter unexplained phenomena and often see the silhouettes of ghosts. In one of the hotels there is room 203, where the ghost of a girl lives. Believe it or not, this room is booked six months in advance. And the story here is this: The wife of one plantation owner fell in love with the seas and they secretly met at the hotel, in room 203. One day, when a sailor arrived from another business trip, the girl saw him in the arms of another and could not control her feelings and threw herself out of the window of that very room 203. Her ghost still haunts this hotel. Many guests of room 203 noticed that someone was rummaging through their personal belongings, especially women’s belongings. One woman who stayed in that famous room over Christmas couldn't find her underwear and went down to the reception to complain that someone had stolen her things. Imagine the surprise of the hotel workers and the guest herself that her bra was hanging on Rozhdestvenskaya Street in the hotel lobby! Whether you believe all this or not is up to you! The so-called Gost tours take place every evening and begin at 10 pm near the central Charleston market. It all depends on the guide you get and what stories he tells you. We were given special ghost detectors, some even signaled about ghosts.

After reconstruction, the church was renamed the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and built on the foundation of the previous cathedral. The building seats 720 people and is known for its grandiose hand-painted stained glass windows and its neo-Gothic architecture.

Fort Sumter (Fort Sumter) a sea fort located in Charleston South Carolina. The fort is a famous site in Civil War history, where the first shots were fired on April 12, 1861. In 1966, the fort was included in the US National Register of Historic Places.

Charleston was one of the most unexpectedly interesting points on our route on the way from Key West to . It is located in the southeast of South Carolina. Its population is only 128 thousand people, now the city is quiet and inconspicuous. However, he played an important role in US history. Charleston was founded back in 1670, after which it was for a long time one of the most prosperous cities in the south due to trade and transport flows of rice, indigo and cotton.

For us, it has become, on the one hand, a city that allows us to plunge into the atmosphere of the 18th century, with its colonial architecture, churches, houses of planters and wealthy southerners. On the other hand, it is a city of authentic gastronomy, which primarily amazes seafood lovers (like me).

In general, here is also the oldest museum in the United States, and the fort where the Civil War began, and gorgeous beaches, and magnificent plantations. All this has long become attractions that attract millions of Americans and foreign tourists.

How to get there

Before you get directly to Charleston, fly into Washington or. A flight from Moscow to New York or Washington will cost approximately 200 USD. And there you can travel by car, by plane, or by train to Charleston. It should be noted that the city is located on the coast in the middle of the state of South Carolina and at the same time in the middle of the route from New York to Key West. I think that for most travelers this will be just a dot on the map. I still advise you to calculate your time so that you spend at least two days and one night here - it’s worth it.

By plane

Planes fly here from New York, Atlanta, Washington and Philadelphia. The distances are short, and a direct flight from New York takes just over two hours, and from Washington about an hour and a half. If purchased in advance, a ticket will cost approximately 50–60 USD from Washington and New York, respectively. If purchased on the same day, it can range from 160 to 270 USD. You can compare prices and find the most adequate ones, for example.

Oddly enough, several carriers fly here: American Airlines, Delta, United, jetBlue. Flights “there” are mostly in the morning, which can be useful for us: arrived at 11 am - walk all day! True, you will also have to fly out in the first half of the day.

How to get there from the airport

All passenger arrivals take place at Charleston International Airport, which is located in the northern part of the city.

From the airport by taxi or car to the city center it takes up to 30 minutes and up to 45 USD (meeting by a taxi driver, for example, at Green taxi), bus No. XP4 will cost you 2 USD and will take you about 30 minutes.

By train

For lovers of the characteristic sound of wheels and stability on the road at low speeds, Amtrak offers two trains: Silver Meteor and Palmetto. They both depart from Pennsylvania Station in the city. The journey to Charleston Station will take you approximately 13.5 hours, and a ticket will cost at least 126 USD.

You can hop on the same trains in Washington, the trip will be 4 hours shorter and 40 USD cheaper.

How to get there from the station

North Charleston Arlestone Station is located a couple of kilometers from the airport, also in the northern part of the city. Bus No. 10 runs from here to the center, the trip on which will cost you 2 USD. The journey itself will take approximately 40 minutes.

By bus

If for some reason it is convenient for you to travel by bus, then Greyhound offers to travel from New York: the bus station is located at 625 8th Avenue in Manhattan. You will have to spend from 20 to 27 hours on the road, and you will have 2 or 4 transfers in Raleigh and Florence in the first option and in Baltimore, Richmond, Charlotte and Orangeburg in the second.

How to get there from the bus station

From the bus station, located, again, in the northern part of the city, bus number 11 will help you get to the center; the fare will cost the same 2 USD, the journey will take about half an hour.

By car

I think this path is the coolest. There are no schedules or planned stops for you - everything is in your hands! You can slow down anywhere and look at something that from the window of a bus or train at 100 km/h would look like a blurry picture...

In addition, I believe that you are visiting more than one city and planning to see more than one city. And the coolest thing is to do this in a rented car.

We drove to Charleston from New York, the journey without stops takes about 12 hours. Along the way, I recommend that you do not stay on I95 all the time, but turn off from time to time. The cost of such a trip may vary depending on what kind of car you drive and how often you deviate from the route. Gasoline now costs about 65–70 cents per liter (you can monitor current information at globalpetrolprices.com). We drove the first part of the route in a Chevrale Suburban with a consumption of about 20 l/100 km, so it cost us a pretty penny. But if you choose a more economical car, you can reduce your fuel costs.

For example, you can stop by Philadelphia, Washington, Georgetown, or even turn east and drive through the state of Delaware and partly Virginia, taste a Salisbury steak in the city of the same name, drive along the Chincoteague bridge-tunnel and further along the coast...

When is the season? When is the best time to go

This area has a subtropical climate, which means it is almost always warm and humid. As fate would have it, we ended up here in May. I believe that this is the most favorable time to visit the city: the weather is warm, there are not very many tourists, and there is still plenty to see.

Although May is considered one of the driest months here, upon arrival we found ourselves in heavy rain. Luckily it passed quite quickly and the sun came out.

Charleston in the fall

Autumn is similar to spring: temperatures are +20–25 °C, but rain is not the most common occurrence.

Charleston in the spring

Spring, in my opinion, is the best time to visit the city. It’s warm, it rarely rains, everything is in bloom. When we got to Charleston, there were practically no tourists in sight.

Later, I was very surprised to read somewhere that almost 4.5 million people visit this town of one hundred and twenty thousand people every year.

Charleston in winter

In my opinion, it’s a little cold: the temperature stays within +2–10 °C

Districts. Where is the best place to live?

Formally, Charleston has 6 districts:

  1. Peninsula or Downtown;
  2. West Ashley;
  3. Johns Island;
  4. James Island;
  5. Daniel Island;
  6. Cainhoy Peninsula.

It seems to me that this is not very convenient for tourists. Especially considering that several extremely useful facilities for us (airport, train and bus stations) are, according to this division, located in another city - North Charleston.

Therefore, I propose a slightly different scheme (as in the map above), which will also include the surrounding area: the center, the north, the area with plantations and Fort Sumter, and the area with an aircraft carrier and the best beach.

On the lower map you can see the concentration of hotels and hostels in the city. As you might guess, there is plenty to choose from.

  • North. The availability of intercity transport is important for us. It is here that the Charleston International Airport (CHS), the North Charleston train station and the Greyhound bus terminal are located within a short distance of each other. And in this magical triangle there are many hotels where you can stay, and cheaper than in the center. A night near a transport hub can cost from 70 USD, but it can be difficult to find cheaper than 150 USD.
  • Center. Usually all standard photos are taken here. It is this part that is the oldest, prettiest and most attractive for tourists, and it is from here that you will bring a magnet from Rainbow Row and go to Hymans seafood here. The cost of living here varies from 90 to 1500 USD per night, but on average it is 150–200 USD. For a tourist, this is the most suitable option, since all the main attractions are located at an equal distance from each other.
  • Area with plantations and Fort Sumter. It is located a little southwest of the north and center. The name I gave speaks for itself. Home to Magnolia Plantation and its gardens, a tea plantation, a distillery, and the famous Fort Sumter. And on the coast of this area there are sandy beaches - a paradise for surfers and lovers of lying on the sand in just a swimsuit. Here, next to the beaches, there is a huge number of hotels of different levels. Accommodation prices here start at about 50 USD per night, while in roadside hotels they are lower, but near the coast they can reach 350 USD.
  • Area with aircraft carrier and beach is located northeast of the center and north. Formally, most of it is neighboring Mount Pleasant, where the Navy Museum is located, and on Palm Island and Sulwan Island there is an elite residential area with a gorgeous beach. Here hotels are concentrated in close proximity to the beach. Depending on their level, prices vary from 120 USD per night to 250. Moreover, hotels through Booking must be booked literally a year before the trip. In addition to hotels and motels, you can also rent an entire house here, if desired, right on the ocean.

Of course, you need to choose the area to live based on the purposes of your trip. If this is an acquaintance with the history of the city, then it is wiser to settle in the center; if it is a beach holiday, then on the nearby islands. Well, if you are a tourist of average income and are counting on a budget holiday, take a closer look at the area with beaches and a fort north of the river.

No matter where you decide to stay, you need to think about accommodation in advance. To avoid getting into trouble, first compare prices. This can be done, for example, . And the easiest way to book your favorite room is at.

What are the prices for holidays?

This is not to say that a vacation in Charleston is a cheap pastime. Finding a room for less than 100 USD is quite a difficult task: usually the cost of accommodation starts at 150 USD, and, judging by Booking, ends at about 5000 USD per night. By the way, in beach areas hotels are booked a year in advance, but in the center you can find places almost at any time.

Prices for food are very varied, and given how many restaurants and cafes there are, everyone can find an option to suit their taste and budget. In a restaurant with average prices, lunch will cost you 2,530 USD for two, if you don’t order drinks and just take ice water.

Excursions usually cost around 20 USD. Discount coupons can always be found at hotels and the Charleston Visitor Center.

Main attractions. What to see

In a small city like Charleston, you never expect a lot of attractions. It seems that in this way it is similar to the Portuguese Sintra, where, in addition to the town itself, you can visit several palaces, castles, admire the ocean and Cape Roca. Charleston has palaces, plantations, museums, churches, forts, beaches, the ocean and much more.

And the streets themselves are steeped in history: only on them can you feel what the colonial style is, and understand why 4.5 million people a year come here from other states and even other countries.

Churches and temples. Which ones are worth visiting?

Churches and temples in Chalston, in my opinion, are like in Voronezh: literally on every corner. So, for lovers of religious architecture, I recommend using Google maps and exploring the streets for objects that interest you. Still, I will tell you about a couple of churches.

Museums. Which ones are worth visiting?

Since the city has a rich and eventful history, it is full of museums. Among them there are both the oldest museum in the USA and quite new ones.

Fort Sumter

This fort is one of Charleston's top historical attractions. It is famous for the fact that it was here that the civil war between North and South began in 1861. You can only get here by sea. For example, from Liberty square there is a ferry to the fort 2-3 times a day (depending on the season). You can also access the fort from the neighboring town of Mount Pleasant. Water buses run (again, depending on the season) from 1 to 3 times a day. The cost of such a tour is about 20 USD.

Moultrie

Another famous fort is located on the opposite side of the bay from Fort Sumter. It is, as I have already said, reached by land through Mount Pleasant to Sullivan's Island.

The Charleston Museum

This museum is located in the heart of Charleston. It is, in fact, a local history exhibition: the exhibition tells about the history of the city, how its appearance changed and its population grew. The museum consists of three parts:

  1. The Charleston Museum;
  2. The Heyward-Washington House;
  3. The Joseph Manigault House.

You can buy a ticket in one (for 12 USD) or two (for 18) parts, or a complex ticket for 25 USD. There are significant discounts for children and teenagers. You can buy a ticket either on site or online. The main museum building is located at 360 Meeting Street - directly opposite the visitor center. Opening hours are from 9:00 to 17:00.

Confederate Museum

Mace Brown Museum of Natural History

This museum was created specifically for natural history lovers. Having received a free ticket, you can get acquainted with the ancient inhabitants of these places. The museum is located at the local college, at 202 Calhoun Street. Opening hours - from 11:00 to 16:00 (every day except Wednesday). The full schedule and additional information can be found.

And a few more words so you don't think that Charleston has nothing more to offer you. When you go to Sullivan Island, or Palm Island, or maybe Fort Moultrie, or Boonehole Plantation, you will definitely use the bridge The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge. If, like us, you have traveled along the entire east coast of the United States, then it is unlikely to surprise you (although the bridge is quite nice).

Plantations

One of Charleston's main attractions is the plantations. Once they became the basis for creating a settlement, and now they have turned into one of the sources of income for this city. Most Popular:

  • Magnolia platation and its gardens;
  • Boone Hall Plantation;
  • Middleton Place;
  • Drayton Hall;
  • Charleston Tea Plantation.

Tourist streets

The main streets that are worth a walk are King and Meeting Streets, north and south Market Streets, East Bay Street (part of which is the famous Rainbow Row), which turns into the embankment consisting of East Battery and Murray Boulevard.

Nearby Islands

It is better to look at the nearby islands in the “beaches” section, since most of them are sand. But in general there are many islands around Charleston. I will name only the main five:

  • Sullivan;
  • Isle of Palms;
  • Folly Beach;
  • Seabrook;
  • Kiawah.

Food. What to try

When we arrived in Charleston, we still didn’t know what kind of place it was. Therefore, I consider it my duty to introduce you to it not only as a key city of the Confederate South and an excellent beach resort, but also as the capital of coastal cuisine on the East Coast from New York to Key West. According to Tripadvisor, in the city of one hundred and twenty thousand, there are 677 restaurants of very different price categories, but overall very high quality. I think that due to the location, most of them offer our brother fish and seafood. However, there are plenty of other dishes here.

I recommend it for fish and seafood lovers. With very average prices (we spent about 45 USD for lunch for three of us), it is simply replete with a variety of dishes from everything that is caught in the area and beyond. Many original proposals, excellent design, cozy atmosphere, friendly and professional staff make this place the pearl of Meeting Street. And the photos of celebrities who have visited here are already difficult to fit on the walls (although the restaurant has three floors and quite a lot of rooms).

By the way, the establishment is already owned by the fifth generation of the same family, and you can feel it in everything! All seafood is obtained from a vessel that also belongs to the family. And here's what will help you characterize Charleston as a city with an excellent food culture: Hyman's seafood is only 76th in the Tripadvisor rankings.

Among other things, the restaurant has a whole souvenir shop. So, if you haven't purchased anything as a souvenir yet, you can do so here.

Budget

  • Brown Dog Deli;
  • The early bird dinner;
  • Tattooed Moose;
  • Callie's Hot Little Biscuit;
  • Griffon.

Mid-level

  • R Kitchen;
  • Leyla Fine Lebanese Cuisine;
  • Cru Cafe;
  • 167 Raw;
  • Five Loaves Cafe.

Things to do

Vacations in Charleston can be quite varied. You can either lie on the beach all day or go surfing. You can simply wander the streets or, on the contrary, methodically study the contents of museums. You can walk around the plantations all day long, admiring their beauty, or you can study the life of planters and slaves at museum exhibitions and during special performances.

For wildlife lovers, Charleston also has a lot to offer. In addition to the gorgeous beaches, where, for example, you can watch turtles, I recommend visiting the South Carolina Aquarium. It is located on the above Liberty square (from where the ferry goes to Fort Sumter). A ticket for adults will cost 25 USD, for children from 3 to 12 years old - 18 USD. It can be purchased both online and on site from 9:00 to 16:00.

Shopping and shops

I think that Charleston is not the best place to buy clothes and shoes, although this stuff can be found here (both in the center and in the area with the Magnolia plantation and the area with the aircraft carrier). But it seems to me that Charleston is ideal for those who want to buy a wide variety of authentic souvenirs. For this purpose, there is a whole Market, which we wandered into during a one-day visit, souvenir shops of every major attraction, be it a plantation or an Aquarium. In addition, there are entire souvenir shops at some restaurants - for example, in Hyman's seafood, which I wrote about above.

Bars. Where to go

Actually, I don't know much about bars in Charleston. According to Google and TripAdvisor, they are. As far as I have noticed, locals dine in restaurants and cafes in the evenings. But I am sure that there is also a layer that spends its leisure time in bars. Their greatest concentration is in the center, but they are also found in tourist places on the islands. Most often these are not independent establishments, but bars attached to restaurants.

Souvenirs. What to bring as a gift

The range of souvenirs in this city is very large. From the completely banal to alcoholic drinks from one of the oldest distilleries in the South and delicious treats from local plantations. We were also very pleased with the souvenirs in the shop of the Himans restaurant, which I wrote about in the section about food.

So, don’t be lazy to visit gift shops in attractions and stop by Market Street if you want to take home with you, in addition to memories and photos, some cool stuff.

How to get around the city

I believe that you need to move around the city center on your own two feet. He is very small, neat, calm and handsome. If you plan to go to beaches and plantations (or even move to another city), rent a car. The best option is to just rent a car with a driver.

Taxi. What features exist

I won't say that taxis are cheap here. Landing and the first 2 miles will cost 5 USD, 50 cents for every next 1/5 mile, waiting - 20 cents per minute, and each additional passenger plus another 1 USD. Well, the best part is that your trip at night (from midnight to 5 am) can double its cost. The road to the airport will cost you from 25 USD, to the train station - 18, and to the bus station - 15. A trip from the center to the beach will cost approximately 25 USD.

Three free DASH Shuttle routes have been organized around the city especially for tourists, with which you can visit almost all the sights.

Transport rental

If you got to Charleston by public transport, you can rent a car here. All popular global companies have their representative offices at Charleston International Airport (Avis, Budget, Hertz, etc.). You can compare prices from different rental companies and find the best price options.

For those who like to pedal, I recommend the offices of Affordabike or B’s Bikes, where you can rent a bike at prices starting from 15 USD for 2 hours or from 60 USD for the whole day. I love cycling - it's a fast and healthy way to get around. In addition, there are not many cars in the city, and you can ride a bike quite calmly. On the beach islands that you read about in the corresponding section, you can also find bicycle rentals.

Traffic in the city is quite calm, and in May we had virtually no problems with parking. Perhaps they happen during the season. Although in general the distances in the center are scanty: you can leave the car and enjoy walking.

Charleston - holidays with children

In my opinion, children in Charleston can be thoroughly and variedly occupied. Remember: there is a natural history museum, a real aircraft carrier, plantations where you can take part in the production of something like that, surfing beaches, boat rides, and a huge aquarium. So, if your children are at least interested in something, they shouldn’t be bored.

Story

Charleston is the first English settlement in South Carolina. It was founded in 1670 under the name Charles Towne (“the city of Charles”) - in honor of King Charles II. In 1680, Charleston was moved to its current location and began to grow rich in the rice and indigo trade. In 1722-83 its official name was Charles City and Port. Until 1775, it was the residence of the governor of South Carolina, and until 1790 it served as the capital of the corresponding state.

During the first half of the 19th century, Charleston was one of the most prosperous cities in the southern states, the most important cotton port. In December 1860, the residents of Charleston declared the secession of South Carolina from the United States. The capture of Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor began the American Civil War (the fort is now declared a national monument). From July 10, 1863 to February 18, 1865, the city was under siege. The attempt to break this blockade is associated with the first episode in history of the successful use of a submarine: H. L. Hunley sank the sloop USS Housatonic, but also died.

Having lost its importance as a cotton port, Charleston faced an economic downturn. In the 20th century, the mainstay of the local economy was the US Navy base, which was expanded during both world wars. The closure of a number of defense enterprises in 1993 was a serious blow to the city.

Geography

According to the US Bureau of Statistics, the city occupies a total area of 347.5 km², of which 251.2 km² is land and 44.3 km² is water.

Climate

The city enjoys a humid subtropical climate (Cfa according to Köppen classification) with mild winters and hot, humid summers. There is a large amount of rainfall throughout the year. The maximum air temperature was recorded on June 2, 1985 at 40 °C (104 °F), the minimum on January 21, 1985 at −12 °C (10 °F). Hurricanes are a major threat to the area during the summer and early fall; in September 1989, three-quarters of buildings were damaged by Hurricane Hugo; the total amount of damage approached $3 billion.
