Walk around Feodosia

You can start walking around Feodosia on the rocky Cape of St. Elijah, which goes deep into the Black Sea. Here stands Ilyinsky lighthouse. The road from the city center to the lighthouse by car takes only 10 minutes.

Ilyinsky lighthouse

This cape closes the Feodosia harbor. Because of strong winds and storms, ships that went around the cape often perished. And for a long time, the townspeople planned to set up a signal fire here.

The lighthouse was built at the expense of the family of State Councilor Rukavishnikov. His wife Evdokia Nikolaevna thus expressed gratitude to Feodosia for saving their son, who was ill with tuberculosis. The boy, who was considered terminally ill, was brought to the city in the 90s of the 19th century. And daily walks to Cape St. Elijah gradually cured him. The lighthouse started operating in February 1899. beautiful pictures lighthouse and rocky cliffs on the cape.

From the Ilyinsky lighthouse you can walk to Genoese fortress cafe(about 3 km). First you need to go along Ship Lane. Cross Korabelnaya Street and, turning right, go along Portovaya Street to the fortress.

Genoese fortress Kafa

It was built by Genoese merchants in the 20s of the 13th century. And Kafa quickly turned into the center of the Black Sea colonies of Genoa and international Trading port where gold was imported from the East, gems, spices and ... slaves. The city had the largest slave market on the Black Sea.

This made Kafu very rich. A multinational population lived here. The Genoese fortress was powerful and had two lines of fortifications. In the 40s of the XIV century, a 700-meter citadel was built, with high and powerful walls, most of which have survived to this day.

A deep ditch was dug under the fortress walls. The fortress along the perimeter stretched for 5.5 km. Inside it worked the consulate and the treasury, the residence of the bishop and numerous warehouses and shops. Today you can see part of the fortress wall and the citadel, several preserved towers, a bridge and churches.

From the Genoese fortress you need to go towards the ruins Towers of Giovani de Scaffa, a powerful fortification building of the XIV century. The path to it is a little less than 600 m along Portovaya, and then along Tower Street. Why the tower is named that way, no evidence has been preserved.

Tower of Giovani de Scaffa

This fortification was built together with the fortress citadel. And according to legend, they were connected by an underground passage. The tower was round with two-meter walls. The defenders could take water from an underground well. Excavations have never been carried out here. And now the tower is one-third covered with earth.

From the Giovani de Scaffa Tower along Tatarskaya and Novokarantinnaya streets, you need to go to the street. Seismic. Turn right along it and go to Towers of Thomas. The road between the towers will take about 10 minutes (0.6 km).

Thomas Tower

Thomas Tower was also built in the XIV century and was an arsenal, and not far from it, reserve food was stored, which could be used by the besieged. The hill where the tower was built, artist I.K. Aivazovsky later named Mount Mithridates. Only a semicircular tower base has been preserved from the fortification.
