Oh, how happy I am with one of the Roman evenings :)

But let's start from the beginning.
Everyone knows the Michelin tire manufacturer. Even those who are indifferent to tires know its emblem - a man wrapped in white ribbons. The company comes from France and initially its audience was motorists. At some point, the idea came up to produce branded guides describing places where you can eat on the go.
The idea caught on and went far beyond the borders of France. Currently, the company has a whole army of inspectors who travel the world and evaluate restaurants. Based on the results of checks (always anonymous), the restaurant receives one, two or three stars. This is written in the guides, which are constantly updated and reissued. It is an honor to have a Michelin star.
There are no restaurants with Michelin stars in Russia.

There are several such restaurants in Rome and on our trip we visited one of them - Agatha and Romeo. This is an expensive and respected restaurant. At that moment, when I booked a table, I did not fully understand the order of prices, otherwise I would have slipped away :) But we got there and are very, very satisfied. This is not just a dinner - it is a symphony, it is a thoughtful celebration of the senses.

This is what the restaurant looks like inside:

And about the gastronomic part - under the cut.

The restaurant menu is not very extensive. A ready-made tasting set stands apart - it includes several changes of dishes at the discretion of the restaurant owners. Perhaps soon I will become an experienced mega-expert and will be able to reject such proposals :), but now I will say - this is what you need. This is not a set of "dishes of the day" that were boiled in large cauldrons, but a well-thought-out sequence of tastes - each next emphasizes and develops the previous one.

My husband and I arrived at the restaurant first, were greeted friendly and seated at a table.
Directly in front of us was a cupboard with glasses. I am a fanatical lover and connoisseur of glass, and from one inspection of this cabinet I was delighted - they understand wine and glassware here. I apologize for the photo, I did not immediately figure out the lighting.

The remark about "they sort it out" is quite impudent. Wine cellar "Agatha and Romeo" is considered one of the best (if not the best) in the world. I am a certified sommelier and I try to be in the know, but these are people of the highest level - to watch, admire and learn :)
Let's look into the corridor adjacent to the hall:

A tasting set of wines was offered to the tasting menu. After some hesitation, we ordered it too. The hesitation was caused by the fact that I wanted to sort out the wine myself, talk to the sommelier and order something. It's a good thing I didn't. The set included five wines, all very interesting and suitable for dinner.

I asked for a wine list. And I was delighted (oh, this state was repeated many times during the evening) - they brought me two books. These are white wines, and this volume is red.

And dinner has begun!
Perfect dishes, fragrant pastries - a compliment from the chef.

First wine. My favorite memory of this evening. Italian rose sparkling wine. See how great it looks in an expanding glass - it's lighter at the bottom, and there's more wine layer towards the top of the glass, so the wine becomes darker in appearance.
Light, fragrant, elegant balanced taste. A great start to the evening.

And here is the first snack. Food is not the point here. Main wines. Or the atmosphere. Or the incredible unity of all dishes and drinks.
In a small glass something foamy and sea.

The second appetizer is eggplant with parmesan mousse. Portions are small and therefore exciting - only seven dishes. Shall we be hungry?
Serving and explanations of the waiters (English, Italian) are beyond praise.

On the horizon a new glass and a new wine. Solid and fresh German Riesling. I deliberately do not dwell on specific names - this is now superfluous.
And the second appetizer - slightly fried tuna slices and outlandish green salad.

Here it is - a handsome Riesling in an elegant glass.

And this dish caused the most questions. The list of dishes was not in front of our eyes, we skipped the waiter's explanations, covered with pleasure from the first wines and snacks, so we decided that this was something with a green sauce. a careful examination of the dish and a peek at the menu revealed the truth - this is a delicate mashed pea soup and an oyster on a skewer. The most unusual dish of the evening both in appearance and taste.

We are approaching the main dishes and the third wine is a white Italian friulano.
First they brought a new glass...

And then there was the wine itself:

And my biggest favorite is tender ravioli with goat's milk and pumpkin sauce. Four things. Very tasty. And then I realized with surprise that I was already full and drunk.

Somewhere around that moment, I dropped my fork. Two seconds later (albeit two), a waiter ran up to the noise with a new fork. I won't be surprised if he had "excellent" in the special course "Audial determination of the appearance of a fallen cutlery" :)

And the main hot dish:
A slice of turbot fish, zucchini flower stuffed with cod cream and a little zucchini puree. Delicious. This stuffed zucchini flower is the tastiest we've had on our entire trip. And how beautifully served!

By this time, it became clear that we would not go hungry. And indifferent too - dinner unfolded, intoxicated, wrapped up, delighted.

The fourth wine is the only red of the evening. The most dense, fragrant, slightly spicy.
Also, a cheese platter! Incredible. We spent more time studying it than any other dish. Cheeses, tomato jam and a slice of panforte (a Florentine sweet that is a distant relative of gingerbread, but not as sweet).
Perfect! I'm a big connoisseur when it comes to cheese.

And predessert - a small dish before dessert.
By this point I was very, very, very full. So well fed that it was just annoying. I looked sadly at another small vase, dipped a spoon into the delicate lemon cream. And she couldn't eat it. A few minutes later the waiter came and asked if we could take it away. I gathered my strength and did not give the trophy :)

Desserts are ahead and a glass for muscat, a dessert wine, appears on the table.

Here is muscat and here is my dessert :)

And then the perfect tiramisu and a scattering of small cakes struck. I regret one thing - they were very tasty, they were supposed to have much more admiration than I could offer.

Dinner ended with aromatic coffee. The waiter came to me with three types of sugar and asked - white, brown, crystal? According to eyewitnesses, I looked sadly at my husband and said: "Sugar is white. What does our cute waiter want from me?" He wanted me to choose sugar :)

And - oh horror - a home study of photographs showed that to the right of the cup lay a slice of marmalade in chocolate icing. Husband says it's delicious. I looked at mine and didn't try it.

After the dinner was over, the host and the waiters in unison offered to call us a taxi, but it was impossible to sit down and go somewhere.
We walked around Rome at night. Sat in the Borghese Gardens. They remembered the funny and delightful moments of the evening.
They rejoiced in beauty.

This trip is definitely worth taking!

There are a lot of restaurants in Rome, but not all of them can please their visitors with good quality dishes and prices.

In this section of the site, I will recommend restaurants that are located in different areas of the central part of Rome, where you can eat deliciously and taste traditional Roman dishes. I won't take it upon myself to claim that these are the best restaurants in Rome, as there is no match for taste and color, but I hope my tips will help you enjoy Italian food!!!

I have listed the days and hours of some restaurants, be aware that sometimes the schedule changes, and in August many places close for two to three weeks.

Delicious restaurants and pizzerias in Rome

  • Restaurant Pizzeria La Piazzetta De Trastevere at the address: Via Cardinale Merry del Val, 16 (Trastevere district). Opening hours: 12:30-0:00, very convenient, does not close for a siesta.
  • Pizzeria ai Marmi at Viale di Trastevere, 53/57 (Trastevere area). This pizzeria is very much loved by the inhabitants of Rome themselves, it is easy to recognize it by its marble countertops and a bunch of people who usually crowd in front of the entrance. It is open only in the evenings from about 18:30, the day off is Wednesday.
  • Restaurant alla Rampa at 18 Piazza Mignanelli (next to Plaza España). There is a menu in Russian.
  • Restaurant Da Giovanni Dal 1948 at ‎Via Antonio Salandra, 1 (next to Termini Station), the day off is Sunday. Home restaurant with a very friendly owner, delicious dishes, affordable prices.

  • Restaurant PIERLUIGI at: Piazza Dè Ricci, 144 (next to the market - Campo de "fiori), closed on Mondays. The restaurant specializes in fish dishes, but the menu also includes meat and vegetarian dishes.
  • Restaurant Quinzi&Gabrieli at Via delle Coppelle 5 (next to Piazza Navona). I really like this restaurant, it would be even cheaper, it would not have a price! There is a very tasty raw seafood starter dish, it costs 40 euros for a small portion or 60 euros for a large plate (for 2-3 people).
  • Restaurant Costa Paradiso at Via Isonzo, 6 (next to Piazza Fiume, La Rinascente shop), closed on Sundays.
  • Restaurant Eleonora D "Arborea at Corso Trieste, 23. This is a good fish restaurant where you can try fresh seafood: oysters, sea urchins and other delicacies.

Rome Michelin Restaurants

The most famous Michelin-starred restaurant in Rome is La Pergola. It has three stars!!! This restaurant is located at Via Alberto Cadlolo, 101. Opening hours: Tuesday to Saturday: 19:30 - 23:30, closed on Mondays. Dress code: jacket for men.

If you want to get into this restaurant, then I strongly advise you to book a table in advance (preferably 2 - 3 months in advance), by writing a request to their email and providing contact information (mobile phone and / or information about your place of residence in Rome).

Theater - restaurant in Rome

In Rome, there is a Thalia restaurant at Via Montebello, 130 (next to Termini Station). There, for tourist groups, they arrange dinner and a performance.

When I was in Italy for the first time in 2002 on a group tour, in Rome our group was offered dinner at a restaurant - theater. I agreed, so I ended up in this Thalia restaurant, I even remembered its name. To be honest, I can’t say that I was delighted, the second time I definitely wouldn’t go there. Still, it seems to me that it is better to go separately to the Opera House of Rome and to a good restaurant.

Panoramic restaurants in Rome

  • The Mirabelle Restaurant at 14 Via di Porta Pinciana (next to Via Veneto) is located on the seventh floor of the Splendide Royal Roma Hotel. This restaurant used to have a Michelin star, then they lost it, but as they themselves say: “We are still on top!”
  • Restaurant Giuda Ballerino! at the address: Piazza Barberini, 23, located on the top floor of the Bernini Bristol Hotel. By the way, they also present themselves as a Michelin restaurant.

In fact, many hotels in the center of Rome have restaurants on the upper floors with a beautiful view of the Eternal City. Maybe there is such a panoramic restaurant in your hotel. Try it!

Russian restaurants in Rome

If you miss Russian cuisine, you can go to the restaurant Matrioska (Matryoshka) at: Via Della Collina Volpi, 6 (near the Basilica of St. Paul outside the walls; blue metro line, stop Basilica San Paolo). There are traditional dishes of Russian, Caucasian, Moldavian and Ukrainian cuisine.

Cafe Rome

  • Cafe Tazza d "oro at: Via dei Pastini, 11 (next to the Pantheon). In this cafe you can only have a cup of coffee at the bar, there are no tables, but the coffee is excellent !!! In addition, here you can buy coffee beans or ground, as you like.
  • Cafe Sant "Eustachio at: Piazza di Sant" Eustachio, 82 (next to the Pantheon and Piazza Navona).
  • Café El Greco at 86 Via dei Condotti (next to Plaza España). It was founded in 1760. N.V. liked to have a cup of coffee in this cafe. Gogol, there is a picture with N.V. Gogol in the foreground and a sheet of paper on which Gogol himself wrote words about Russia. The coffee there is delicious, but the prices are 3-4 times more expensive than in other cafes in Rome. You have to pay for the brand!
  • Cafe Babington's Tea Room at: Piazza di Spagna, 23 (right on the Plaza de España: if you are facing the Spanish Steps, then on the left side of it). Here you can drink real delicious tea.
  • Cafe - ice cream "Gelateria della Palma" at the address: Via della Maddalena, 19-23 (next to the Pantheon). There are more than 150 flavors, they even have champagne flavored ice cream (this is my favorite), although it is not always available, I hope you are lucky!!!
  • GROM ice cream cafes are chain cafes, in Rome they are located at: Via della Maddalena, 30 A (next to the Pantheon), Piazza Navona 1 (on Piazza Navona), in the Termini station building, in the Porta di Roma shopping center. Grom has very tasty natural ice cream, and milkshakes (frappè) are even tastier there, my favorite is pear-flavored (frappè alla pera).
  • Cafe Pompi at Via Albalonga, 9 (red metro line, Re Di Roma stop), closed on Mondays. I myself love this place very much, there are a lot of desserts. I go there to eat tiramisu, it is the most delicious in Rome, be sure to try it!

Restaurant menu usually consists of the following sections:

  • Appetizers (Antipasti) or starters
  • First courses (Primi piatti)
  • Second courses (Secondi piatti)
  • Side dishes (Contorni)
  • Pizza. You will find this section in the menu of only those restaurants where it is prepared. Not all restaurants make pizza, so it's better to try the real right pizza in a pizzeria.
  • Desserts
  • Wines (Vini)

What to try in Italy and in Rome from food and prices in restaurants in Rome you can.

Tipping in restaurants in Rome

If the bill has a line "for service" (coperto or servizio), then you can not leave a tip. If this line is not present, then the tip is not included in the bill, and this is at the discretion of the client. I always tell my tourists if you like the place, the service, you are satisfied, you can do something nice and leave a tip in the amount of 5-10% of the bill.

Lunch and Dinner Times in Italy

In Italy, you should try to have lunch and dinner at the time allotted for this:

  • lunch from 12:30 to 15:00
  • dinner from 19:30 to 22:00.

The main thing is to have time to order the main dishes, and then you can savor them as much as you want.

Rome is a tourist center, so you won't die of hunger outside the indicated schedule: you can eat in bars or eateries, but decent restaurants usually close for a siesta from 15:00 to 19:30.

If you have any questions, you can ask them in the comments, I will try to help you.

If you want to get real pleasure from Italian cuisine, taste the wines, cheeses and sausages of the Lazio region, fresh Nemi strawberries, porchetta di Ariccia, eat pasta, grilled meats and desserts in a home restaurant, then I advise you to book a tour "Gastronomic tour: my provincial Italy" or "Roman Castles" .

Instead of the usual lunch or dinner at a restaurant, you can participate in Italian cooking class .

In majestic Rome, everything must be impressive - from architecture to fine dining. And the menu should, of course, be much wider than Neapolitan pizza or pasta with seafood.

Castel Sant'Angelo. Rome. Photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/aigle_dore

It's hard to imagine what a classic trattoria, an experimental bistro, and an iconic Michelin-starred establishment can have in common. All of them are respected for their unique authentic cuisine and will become a real must-go on the tourist map in Rome.

In this article, I wanted to collect 10 cozy establishments that are worthy of the attention of a real gourmet.

La Pergola

"Roman German" - this is how the chef of La Pergola restaurant Heinz Beck is jokingly called, indicating his Aryan origin.

However, exquisite recipes and observance of classical Roman recipes with hints of the Mediterranean make the cuisine under his strict guidance truly in demand here, in the heart of Italy.

Restaurant La Pergola is a three-time Michelin star and its chef is the only one in the world to be awarded the Gold Medal of the Foyer of Artists Awards. Heinz is the only chef to have received this culinary arts award from La Sapienza University in Rome.

Restaurant critics unanimously recognize Heinz Beck as the best not only in the city, but also far beyond its borders!

A meal here is more like a theatrical performance than an ordinary lunch or dinner in the usual form for us: a luxurious interior and imperial furniture, a breathtaking panoramic view of the Eternal City and fabulous serving of food will not leave guests indifferent.

Heinz Beck and his culinary masterpieces. Photo: http://shoppingspirit.pt

The influence of idle Italian life on the German character, the star chef reflects in his menu:

  • interlude of white asparagus and morels with cheese mousse;
  • king lobster medallions on a bed of marinated bacon with applesauce;
  • tender goose foie gras with fragrant strawberry sauce and Amaretto liqueur jelly.

The chef's specialty "Sea" is a worthy example of Beck's extravaganza of taste: when serving, the waiter skillfully pours seafood-based broth onto a freeze-dried rock of garlic shrimp and potatoes, which turns into a shallow seabed with shells, white shrimp and clams before our eyes in a few seconds.

Each dish is a culinary masterpiece!

But the restaurant is not famous for its cuisine alone. The best sommelier in the business, Marco Reitano, and an extensive wine cellar with more than 3,500 titles, the oldest of which dates back to 1888, will satisfy the highest taste requirements.

The star chef has star guests. Only Beck at the next table can safely count on a chance meeting with the Prince of Monaco, an Oscar-winning Hollywood actor or a great French director, relaxingly smoking a strong cigar.

The restaurant is so popular that even on the website, visitors are strongly advised to think about booking a table in advance, preferably 2-3 months in advance. After all, even a solid average bill of €200 does not reduce the number of people who want to spend an unforgettable evening here in the company of a lady of the heart in a secular atmosphere of haute cuisine luxury.

Meal cost: from €39

Antica Pesa

This is a restaurant-museum located in the picturesque quarter of Rome - Trastevere. The history of the restaurant began 4 centuries ago, when Antica Pesa was still a hotel-snack bar, whose cuisine was famous throughout the city and attracted wealthy customers.

Restaurant Antica Pesa. Photo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jordan-wong

On the site of a luxurious garden, in the shade of which successful jetsetters from all over the world now have fun in the evenings, there used to be the only bowling alley in the city.

Portraits of famous visitors smile from the walls, including Madonna and Robert de Niro. And during the filming of The Godfather 3, Ford Coppola enjoyed this authentic Antica Pesa atmosphere during business conversations with director Keith Haring.

But what has attracted famous people here for so many years? And the answer lies in the traditional dishes of an authentic Italian trattoria with a modern twist.

Thus, the Monte San Biagio hamburger was created in honor of the restaurant's revered American customers; and fried pork and Millefeuil mozzarella with pear sauce is a piece of Italian history that has survived to this day.
