A fantastically beautiful oasis with Lake Yueyaquan (Yueyaquan), which translates as - "Young Moon" can be found in the Gobi Desert,. It is located 6 km. southwest of the city of Dunhuang (Gansu Province). Looking at it from a height, you can see that the lake in this oasis really has the shape of a crescent. It is difficult to overestimate the importance of such a place for the desert, even the name given to it speaks for itself - "Gobi" is translated from Mongolian as "a waterless place". The Gobi Desert covers an area of 1,300,000 sq. km. and extends for 1600 km from southwest to northeast and for 800 km from north to south. Therefore, the Yueyaquan oasis is the pearl of this desert.

Residential buildings are lined up around the lake, as well as green spaces are planted, which feel very good in proximity to the reservoir. It even has its own Buddhist temple in a traditional Chinese style that rises above all this beauty. Birds fly here, and there are fish in the lake. Seeing Yueyaquan in a desert area where there is only sand and stones everywhere, it immediately seems that you saw a mirage, but when you step on this area, you understand that it is real and it is not a mirage. The oasis itself is located in the lowlands surrounded by the Mingshashan mountains.

But not everything is as good as it might seem, because this oasis may eventually disappear. The lake is rapidly drying up, and the main reason for this is believed to be the dam, which was built in the 70s on the river that once flowed near the city of Dunhuang, for farming purposes. During this period, the number of people living and working in this oasis increased from 100,000 to almost 180,000. And the amount of water consumed by people for irrigating farms increased, depleting the groundwater source of groundwater. In 1960, average depth lakes then ranged from 4 to 5 m, maximum depth- 7.5 m. Since that time, the depth of the lake has constantly decreased. By the beginning of the 1990s, the surface of the lake was reduced to only 5.5 m?, and the average depth was down to 0.9 m (the maximum was 1.3 m).

The government is taking steps to preserve and restore the depth of the lake to its previous level. To do this, they began to regulate and ensure that the population of the oasis does not exceed the allowable number established by law, it is forbidden to build additional new agricultural land and drill any wells. This lake is now listed world heritage UNESCO.

The Yueyaquan oasis is very popular among tourists, and you can get there by camel or off-road vehicle.
