Lviv from A to Z. Manual for an independent tourist. Excursion around Lviv on your own: day one Go to Lviv for 2 days

Remember the old movie with Julia Roberts - "Eat, Pray, Love"? So, if the scriptwriters had arrived in Lvov on the eve of filming, they would not have had to shoot scenes in three countries of the world. Everything that the heroine of the film, Elizabeth Gilbert, did, fits perfectly into the spirit of this atmospheric city in the very west of Ukraine. Lviv is amazing, ancient, majestic, sacred, mystical, gastronomic, romantic and very friendly.

We have just returned from Lviv, where we spent an unforgettable week. I have 1,500 photos and a bunch of stories in store that I'll be sharing with you over the next couple of weeks! And today a general post about Lviv, which explains why we went there, what we saw and why we will definitely return again.

"In Lvov, first of all, go to the cemetery, it's very beautiful there!" - a thin old man sat opposite us in the compartment and enthusiastically talked about Lvov. "Besides the cemetery, climb up to the town hall, from there you can see all of Lviv! And the people there are very friendly and calm. Here in Vinnitsa we meet all sorts of people, and they are all so polite."

Why did we decide to go to Lviv?

We decided to go to the west of Ukraine to Lviv quite spontaneously. We have wanted to for a long time, but then repairs in the apartment need to be done, then it’s time to wander around Asia. This summer they wanted to work hard while sitting in Kyiv, but it suddenly turned out that Sasha had warned his superiors about the July vacation in the winter. They are obligatory and responsible people, and have already found a replacement for him for these two weeks in July. Therefore, I had to urgently figure out how to spend my vacation. There was no doubt about the need to go to Lviv. It is relatively close to Kyiv, only a night by train or 5.5 hours by high speed Intercity train. Lviv has beautiful architecture, delicious food, lots of entertainment. In short, Lviv is a European city with Ukrainian housing and restaurant prices. Here you can go on a tour for $ 3 or dine from the belly for $ 10 for three.

What did we do in Lviv?

Lviv is a medieval city. Surprisingly, buildings have been preserved in the historical center, the age of which is simply impossible to believe. Some houses are 450 years old! They are intact and, moreover, "alive" - there are museums, hostels, restaurants, shops ...

Lviv is stunning gothic cathedrals and churches. Majestic on the outside and absolutely amazing beauty inside. If nothing surprises you, stop by the Latin Cathedral and listen to the organ tune during the service.

Speaking of organs. It is in Lviv that there is the largest organ in Ukraine and one of the largest in Eastern Europe. It stands in the Church of Mary Magdalene in the Lviv House of Organ and Chamber Music. We went to a concert there, and for the tickets we paid only 1.5 dollars! An organ concert for $1.5, can you imagine that?!

Remember, at the beginning of the post I wrote about the cemetery, which my grandfather from Vinnitsa strongly advised us to visit - our random fellow traveler on the train? So, we also stopped at the Lychakiv cemetery.

It is unique for its ancient crypts and very beautiful sculptures on the graves. Many celebrities are buried there. Twenty years ago, the cemetery received the status of an open-air museum, and now there are guided tours. Very interesting place, calm and majestic. And the guide told us a couple of dozen amazing stories about those who are buried there.

"Emotional restaurants" in Lviv

Lviv's feature is "emotional restaurants". A network of themed restaurants and cafes where your visit is turned into a performance. It all started with the famous "Kryivka" in 2007. Three Lviv residents opened a restaurant - a bunker of Ukrainian rebels. They played on the most common myth about Lviv, that it is inhabited entirely by nationalists who hate "Muscovites". The restaurant is absolutely comic, for those who have a good sense of humor. The place is very popular with tourists from Russia who go there to see "those same Bandera".

A funny place is the "Gas Lamp", which imitates an oil producing station. You are climbing somewhere along a spiral staircase in the twilight and suddenly you reach a cozy veranda with a glass roof. Kerosene stoves are hung everywhere, and food is brought in cast-iron pans.

There is also the "Masoch Cafe", where the waiters can affectionately spank everyone with a whip. We did not get there, because there was no one to leave Arina with, and it was not comme il faut to go to such a place with a child.

"Naydorozhcha Restoracia Galicia" is another themed restaurant that you want to return to. The owners played on the spy conspiracy theory. If you have read "Secrets of the Elders of Zion" and believe in a Masonic conspiracy, then "Naydorozhcha Restaurant of Galicia" is a great meme on this topic! This is a restaurant of a secret society of Jewish Masons in Lviv and its environs. Finding him is not so easy. No signage. To get there, you need to pass a small test.

Do you know that Lviv is the Ukrainian mecca of coffee lovers? "Where does coffee come from in Lviv?" - You ask. It is mined in a mine right under the central square of the city! Lviv residents dig coffee out of the ground all night long in order to roast the beans at dawn and serve a freshly brewed invigorating and fragrant drink for breakfast. The coffee mine is called "Lvivska kawi mine". Go there and see for yourself that I did not invent anything. All pure truth!

We visited several more interesting places where people with a good sense of humor should go. I will write about all of them! Do not miss the post about gastronomic Lviv!

Lviv for children

If you ask Arina what she liked about Lviv, she will begin to tell how she made a big caramel with her own hands at a master class in the Caramel Workshop.

And she will definitely mention how she played the street piano and painted the gingerbread in the gingerbread Yurashki.

And she will remember with rapture how she carried free "compliment sweets" in the amazing "Chocolate Workshop", where each sweet is a work of art, and hot chocolate and coffee are served in such different variations that it will only be possible to try everything in a few days.

Arinka will also tell you about her new friends in the Ivan Franko Park and how we climbed high up the mountain to see the High Castle. The castle was never found, but they saw all of Lviv from a bird's eye view, and she met squirrels.

And of course the cat cafe! We found as many as two and went there almost every day. Cat cafes are places where you can not only drink coffee or eat, but also pet cats!

About a dozen live in each, but there is no smell, everything is clean and tidy. A real find for parents who want to keep their child busy and eat in peace. Playing with cats is a pleasure not only for children, but also for adults. Just look at the cutie Lily, you just want to cuddle her!

Is it dangerous in Lviv? How do they treat Russians there?

I deliberately left this chapter at the end of the article so that you read the rest first. Now tell me, does Sasha look like a “Moskal” tortured to death, who was tormented by Lvov for a whole week?

I must say right away that Sasha has a rather strong Moscow accent, because he was born there and lived until the age of 27. And even though a hundred years have passed since moving to Ukraine, the accent has smoothed out only a little - all the locals easily recognize him as a Russian. Away with stereotypes - in fact, Lviv residents are tolerant and tactful towards any tourists. It doesn't matter where they came from: from France, Germany, Azerbaijan or Russia. The most important thing is to treat the city, the country and the people who live there with respect. I tried to speak Ukrainian in Lviv, Sasha does not know Ukrainian, he spoke Russian. We were treated consistently well and we did not feel any rudeness, aggression and discrimination for a second.

How much money did we spend in Lviv?

Renting an apartment in Lviv

We lived in the very center of Lviv, right on Rynok Square. Rented through Airbnb a small apartment with a kitchen and one bedroom. A day of rent cost $15, 6 days cost $90.

Train to Lviv

Train Kyiv-Lviv - 2 tickets for 161 hryvnia and 1 for children - 129 hryvnia - total 451 hryvnia ($ 20.5)

High-speed train Lviv-Kyiv (5 hours on the way) 2 tickets for 328 hryvnia ($15) - 656 hryvnia ($30)

Total spent on the road: 1107 hryvnia, which is a little more than $50.

Excursions, food, restaurants

As a rule, we had breakfast at home, and lunch and dinner in a cafe. Sometimes just like that in the middle of the day we went to coffee shops to eat dessert or drink fruit cocktails in a cat cafe.

The most expensive restaurant bill was 650 hryvnia ($30). They brought us 800 grams of juicy beef steak, a huge plate of lamb cutlets, potatoes and vegetables.

The smallest bill for lunch is 60 hryvnias ($3) in a small cafe with homemade cabbage rolls.

Entrance tickets to attractions rarely cost more than a dollar per person. Once we paid for a tour of the Lychakiv cemetery. We spent 80 hryvnias on this - less than 4 dollars.

In total, we spent 5,370 hryvnias - $244 - on food, restaurants, excursions and transport.

Souvenirs and gifts - about 450 hryvnia ($20)

A week trip from Kyiv to Lvov cost us 404 dollars for three persons.

In the next couple of weeks I plan to write about everything in detail. I will show you the most beautiful Lviv sights, tell you about the "emotional restaurants" that we visited, write a guide on how to quickly find your way around how everything works in the center of Lviv, as well as how to see everything on your own, without the help of travel agencies.

Which, in the absence of competitors, is steadily growing in price. If earlier it was possible to go to Lviv to drink coffee and take a walk for a couple of days, now we are planning it as a real trip with a decent budget.

Main items of expenses when traveling to Lviv

What expenses await tourists in Lvov? These are the road, housing, food and expenses for attractions.

Road to Lviv

Automobile- expensive, but quite convenient and fast, from Kyiv - 6.5 hours with stops, 550 km. I get back and forth exactly two tanks of gasoline, or about 2000 UAH. Great helps save service blah blah car- up to 75% of the cost of fuel. He wrote about his experience of using blah = la car here.

By rail This is by far the cheapest way. From Kyiv in Lviv there are two dozen trains, including several high-speed ones. The ticket can be bought on the Ukrzaliznytsia website. Depending on the chosen train and route, the ticket will cost from 120 (regular) to 350 hryvnias (express). Prices as of early 2016.

Bus And air travel in the case of Lviv - exotic ways of traveling, so I do not include them in the review. The first is uncomfortable, the second is unclaimed by tourists because of the high price.

Housing expenses in Lviv

Cheap housing in Lviv started to leave the city a couple of years ago. There are many offers, accommodation options - private mini-hotels, hostels, tourist hotels and business class hotels. On ordinary days, the cheapest accommodation near the center or in the center will cost from 130 UAH. per person, usually hostels. On weekends or holidays, add 30-100 percent to the cost. Average hotel - 350-600 UAH. per day for a double room. Daily rent of apartments is very popular, there are options from $1.5 per day per person. I also recommend reading the article The best Lviv hotels and apartments under $30 for two on my travel accommodation blog. How much does it cost to have breakfast in Lviv

Lviv is a city where the cult of coffee is historically developed. The most famous - "glamorous" coffee houses - "Cafe 1" and "Svit Kavi". Folk places where both pleasant and tasty are “Virmenka” and “Dziga” on Armenian street. The price of a cup of coffee is from 12 UAH. in Armenian and in Dzyga, 30-50 UAH. in "Svit Kavi". The price of accompanying coffee drinks - liquor, cognac, tinctures or liqueurs is proportional to the price of a cup of coffee and the degree of glamor of the institution.
"... in Lviv it is not customary to sit in the same place for more than a certain time, on average it is 30-50 minutes, although it is rather arbitrary. Usually the format is like this - they came, drank coffee and something stronger and went to the next institution This kind of bar surfing is very local. If you walk together in three or four places, you can easily leave 250-300 UAH.

Tasty have breakfast in Lviv in the historical part you can in several places, on average breakfast will cost from 75 UAH up to 150 UAH. Naturally, in a railway station eatery it costs three times cheaper, but I would not risk it.

It makes no sense to list all the places where you can have lunch in Lviv , the most famous and favorite places for tourists are in the article Where to eat in Lviv. In addition, there are food courts in shopping centers in areas adjacent to the center. The price of lunch with pleasure is 100-150 UAH. , if you seriously sit in a good place - 250 UAH. "from the nose". How to save money on food: Why save on it? Food is exactly what many people come to Lviv for.

Excursions in Lviv

There are thousands of guides in Lviv, both new and original, as well as the old school of Soviet times. The price of the tour is from 120 to 200 UAH. per hour, depending on the size of the group, duration and format of the tour. Most of the tours take place on Rynok Square and the nearest adjacent streets and temples. Usually 30-50 percent of the time of the tour is spent walking around “fake” sights, such as the Kavi Dig, the basement of the Left Bank restaurant (under the Opera House) or the House of Legends. You can visit these places on your own.

"... you can look for a guide using the "scientific poke method" - Rynok Square is full of unemployed guides who will tell and show Lviv at a reasonable price, but no one can guarantee the quality. The best way to see the city is to contact the locals, they will help you see Lviv on the other hand - you will be left with .
How to save: walking on your own, it's not difficult - the center is small, you can take a map from the information center, which is located in the Town Hall, the entrance is outside, although in this case you will not learn a single story and see what everyone sees ...

We assumed that in Lviv you will:

Yes, yes, just eat! It was possible to write “eat”, but each of us knows deep down that this word does not so clearly describe the purpose of visiting the many and varied cafes and restaurants in Lviv. Before a detailed description of the recommendations, let us express our regret that a person is given only one stomach on vacation, and not three (the third for dessert).
1. The best solution for lovers of simple but hearty cuisine will be a visit to Zenik - this cafe is famous for its potato pancakes, which are also suitable for beer, like a picnic for spring. This place can be an ideal choice for a snack or a long noisy feast - it's up to you.

Where to go?- T. Kosciuszka Street, 1.

2. You can have a delicious breakfast and take a break from hiking in the Strudel House, a wonderful place that we advise everyone to visit. The main thing is to be prepared for the fact that the choice will be so large and everything will be so tasty that you can lose consciousness from gastronomic happiness. All this splendor is complemented by the fact that each piece of strudel is served with different sauces.

Where to fly?– Shevskaya street, 6.

3. To feel the spirit of old Austria and please your loved ones with a variety of drinks is definitely worth it in the Blue Flask. This unique place can accommodate a very limited number of people, which is probably why it has become so popular - everyone wants to go there. But, if you are still lucky and you put yourself on a small wooden chair and you have a menu in your hands, then be guided by your intuition and try all the tinctures that you can. They are the best in the world at the Blue Flask. And yes, we in no way motivate you to get drunk! Or do we motivate? 😉

Where to run?– Russian street, 4.

4. Continuing the theme of the legendary Lviv tinctures and delicious food, we boldly recommend going to Gasova Lampa, which is positioned as a museum-restaurant. The thing is that there is the largest collection of gas lamps in Europe, the first of which was invented in Lviv. Our advice - go up to the top floor, choose a place with a view of the rooftops of the city, order the most nutritious dish ( approx. ed.: I'm not going to pick up more literary synonyms for the ancient Ukrainian word “gluttonous”, because only the content manager goes on vacation, and the editor stays in the office hungry). Your choice of nutritious dish can be potatoes with sausages in a ton of sauce. Please enjoy life and have a glass of beer for our poor editor. Yes, it's that simple!

Where to?– Armenian street, 20

5. Finally, a recommendation from the Dobovo project manager, who whispered in my ear that the best bograch in the world is served at the Meat and Justice Restaurant ( approx. Ed .: this is such a goulash with a bunch of delicious things in a plate of fragrant bread, which you can also eat later). Also, it would not be superfluous to note that the specialization of the institution is meat and punishments ( approx. project manager Dobovo: meat and punishment are our everything). This is if you suddenly thought that the name is some kind of joke. In short, we must go!

Where? Where– Valovaya street, 20.

We really believe that you will go there! After all, it is always useful to dilute the endless cycle of recreation and travel to cafes with a cultural program. Lviv is a city in which 100% there is something that you could not see anywhere else. So here's a guide for you.
6. The oldest pharmacy in Lviv "Under the Black Eagle" has been operating since 1735 and there you can not only buy medicines, but also arrange an entertaining tour. The museum presents rare exhibits - collectible bottles, cups, cones, recipes and other entertaining things related to pharmaceutical activities.

Where is the pharmacy?– Drukarska street, 2.

7. Another unique museum is the Glass Museum. It is also the only one of its kind in all of Europe. There are presented both ancient products and modern ones, which were brought from many countries. His premises are located in the basement of the Palazzo Bandinelli, once one of the richest houses in Lviv. So there it is quite possible to kill two birds with one stone - look at the exhibits and visit the dungeon under the sidewalks of the city.

That's where the glass museum is- Rynok Square, 2.

8. You can plunge into an interesting part of history in the Museum of the Mermaid of the Dniester. Its location alone should motivate travelers to visit! This is the bell tower of the Church of the Holy Spirit, on top of which an old clock is installed. The museum itself is dedicated to the history of the activities of the "Russian Trinity" and the appearance of the first Western Ukrainian almanac.

Come here- Copernicus street, 40.

9. If you were not a Goth in your youth and did not have the habit of spending leisure time in abandoned and not very cemeteries, then in Lviv this can be easily corrected by going to the Lychakiv cemetery. Firstly, it is over 200 years old, and secondly, there are beautiful tombs that belonged to wealthy Lviv families. Reasons for visiting - on the face.

The cemetery is here- Mechnikov street, 33.

10. What can Lviv be without delicious beer? So we think there is none. In this regard, we recommend visiting the brewery museum with the function of tasting the best Lviv beer. Oh yes, there you can still watch a film about the brewery and look at the tools of the brewers of the past.

You can watch beer and drink beer here- st. Kleparovska, 18.

Another obvious point of our virtual tour, which is designed to make the real tour more vivid.
11. You should start with the ascent to the Lviv City Hall. Having made a difficult path along the n-th number of steps and being at the top, you can see the city to your heart's content. While you admire and take selfies and panoramas, think of a route for further travel, because you can always see better from above. Take a breather, enjoy the sun, upload a selfie to Instagram and move on.

Climb up here- Rynok Square, 1.

12. By the way, Rynok Square itself can be singled out as a separate item, because this place is a full-fledged point in the tourist route. You can be tempted by the restaurant and drink a cup of Lviv coffee on the terrace / sit on the fountain / listen to street musicians.

13 . Walking through the central part, take a look at the Dominican Cathedral, the Bernardine Monastery, do not miss the Boim Chapel and the Italian Courtyard. When you find another restaurant in the latter, run from there to the Opera House, and then to the Potocki Palace. Here you can linger for an hour or two, admire the architecture and, if it's warm, lie on the grass. It's very quiet and not fussy, so try not to doze off, as Dobovo's content manager once did.

Palace can be found here- Copernicus street, 15.

14. Almost forgot to send you to Dzyga. In short, this place is a bohemian hangout. If you are not tired of them in Kyiv, then welcome! There is a concentration of all kinds of art - performances, painting, sculpture and all that. An excellent opportunity to join the urban underground.

Where is art served?– Armenian Street, 35

15. And up again! If your strength still has not left you, our dear readers, and if you are not wearing heels and your shoes are not rubbing, run to the High Castle! This park has a panoramic view. An ancient legend says - where there is a panorama, there are cool pictures. Don't miss the chance.

Photo location here: Street High Castle.

Spring weather and endless streams of solar heat have a beneficial effect on the Dobovo team, so in the end we wish you the same sincere fun as in our office, only in Lviv.
16. First, why don't we just pick up and get lost somewhere? If you are in the city for the first time, then it will not be very problematic. Turn into the first courtyards that come across (no crime), explore the nooks and crannies and do not think about where it will lead you. May the spirit of adventure never leave you. Perhaps you will meet a cute Lviv grandmother who will show you the way back and treat you to a couple of urban legends, or you will find your love.
17. The following advice follows from this advice, namely - get acquainted! Wonderful people live in Lviv, who will never even think of refusing help and company. In the evening, young people with guitars gather on Rynok Square, and on weekends the city just walks around. No, of course, you don’t need to run up to every person with a Lviv accent and impose communication with your modest person, let everything happen by itself. Personally, I was once lucky to make acquaintance with the native Lvivians, who showed a couple of interesting and non-tourist places, and another aspiring actor read Shevchenko's poems in front of me and my friends. So be free and open, no one will bite you.

18. Speak Ukrainian. Even if you speak Russian in everyday life, this practice will only benefit. This place simply incites to switch to Ukrainian, because there it sounds somehow especially sweet and beautiful. There is a chance to learn slang words and dialects, and then come to Kyiv and brag to friends and colleagues. curiosity to you!
19. Walk until the morning. Yes, forget sleep. Why waste precious time in Lviv sleeping and sitting on the sofa? That's what we think. And let the burden of what you eat and drink does not put pressure on you, but, on the contrary, gives you strength and energy. The main thing is not to be afraid to miss the train, and even if you are late, rejoice at the opportunity to spend an extra day in the city. Forget mobile phones and social media, and you can even allow yourself not to answer the call from work, because as a result it will still not matter when you watch the dawn with your soulmate, or friends.

20. In the end, no matter how magical Lviv is, never stop at one point. Take a ticket and move on - wherever your eyes look. After all, there is so much more that you have not seen. And how does it not scare you?!
The Dobovo team traditionally wishes bright impressions and a colorful spring. If you are reading this, look out the window right now. Perhaps the first green leaf has already appeared there, or the sunset is pink.

The population of the city is about 800,000. The city was founded by Galician Prince Daniel Romanovich. This city is interesting for its sights and ancient buildings.

Many buildings in Lviv are included in the UNESCO list. This wonderful city has the largest number of monuments in Ukraine.

tour cost

Travel (per person) on a high-speed Hyundai Intercity from Kharkov to Kyiv 1st class 350 UAH + from Kyiv to Lviv 1st class 430 UAH. We bought tickets in advance on the website. We booked an apartment online for two days. It is located in the center, quite conveniently and inexpensively, on Petra Doroshenko St., 460 UAH per day, one-room apartment, for 2 beds, with all amenities, clean and comfortable. We rested with my husband together, we were completely satisfied with the conditions. We traveled from the station to the apartment by public transport, 3 UAH per person by tram one way.

Visited only free attractions. There are quite a lot of such places in Lviv, we climbed the High Castle - stomp for about half an hour from Rynok Square, the lookout is free - better in sunny weather, in rain - very slippery; were at the Museum of Victims of Political Repressions "Prison on Lontsky", but it is better for groups to sign up in advance; walked on Rynok Square and examined all the buildings and the most beautiful temples of Lvov; went to the "House of Legends" to look at the city from a height; were in "Kopalni kavi" (Rynok square) and in the cafe "Left Bank" (Opera theaters) to see the dungeons. And of course listened to street musicians. Is it possible to climb the Town Hall - the most popular observation deck, it costs 10 UAH per person.

Food and products

On average, you can have a good breakfast for two in the center for 150 UAH, and dine with pleasure for 200-250 UAH. In total, we spent about 900 UAH on food for two days.

Souvenirs and other goods

Bought only small souvenirs. We bought magnets, key chains, cards, T-shirts (cotton), a huge gift set of sweets in the Lviv Chocolate Workshop bought for 590 UAH, the chocolate is delicious. In total, about 1000 UAH were spent on souvenirs.

Youth rest

For young guys who go on vacation in a group, there is no better place at this time of the year. Young people have many options where to walk and sit. At night, you can go to a disco or, even better, climb a mountain called "High Castle" and see a beautiful view of the whole beautifully lit city in the evening. If in the evening the company freezes on the street and wants to warm up, they can find many establishments with different food and delicious warming mead. Although it's winter, you should definitely go to a beer bar called "Robert Doms' Brewhouse" and try this beer of theirs. It is very tasty. And for a large company, you can take a beer plate or, for example, try pickled peppers for beer. I was pleasantly surprised.

Family holiday

For a couple, this is one of the best options to have fun and relax even in a romantic setting. Evening Lviv in winter pleases with many interesting things for a couple, and you can stay in an inexpensive hostel or a good hotel. You can also find an apartment for rent.

What to take with you on vacation?

1) camera; 2) warm clothes and comfortable shoes for walking; 3) at least one backpack for souvenirs or other necessary things on a walk.

Where is the best place to stay?

Hotels are considered expensive, so the best option would be to stay in a hostel or rent an apartment. Very good and inexpensive hostels like "Del Positive" and mini hotel "Freedom", which are located almost in the center of the city.

What to do at the resort?

When my wife and I arrived in Lviv, we immediately settled in a hostel, and then went for a walk around Lviv. Were in the park on the mountain "High Castle". Then we went down and walked around the fair and went to eat in the basement, which is called "Kryivka". Very tasty food and mead. Then we decided to go to the vernissage, where various things from the Carpathian region are sold. We went to different shops and boutiques. I will single out one of the best, which is called "Lviv Chocolate Workshop", which sells various sweets. We visited various beautiful churches where you can take pictures. We walked through the Italian courtyard, where there is very tasty coffee. We went to an open-air skating rink, which is located on Rynok Square.

Where can you eat?

Basically, all delicious cafes and restaurants are concentrated in the center of Lviv. Among them, I would single out the most delicious ones: "Kryivka", "Liny Dog", "Kumpel" and "Robert Doms' Khmilny Dom".

About the quality of food and service

Very tasty and varied food. Each establishment brews its own beer.

Is it worth it to rest in Lviv?

I will definitely come to rest in this city again, because in a few days I could not get around everything that I found on the Internet. I will probably choose the next period in the fall on the day of the city of Lviv.
