History of St. Isaac's Cathedral in St. Petersburg

  1. The history of this temple began since 1710, when a small wooden church was built, named after the saint on whose day Peter the Great was born, Isaac. It was here that the king married his second wife.
  2. Over time, St. Isaac's Cathedral turned to stone, and the history of its creation has as many as four temples on this site. It was rebuilt for the third time in the 18th century, but the result was unsatisfactory - the building did not fit into the overall ensemble of this part of St. Petersburg. Then a competition was announced for best project in which he won French architect Montferrand.
The construction of the majestic cathedral took four decades, but the impressive result was worth it. It is interesting that the predecessor of St. Isaac's Church was not completely dismantled - the altar part, the pylons supporting the dome, were preserved from it. Already in the course of construction work, the project gradually changed - Montferrand took into account the comments made by other architects.
  3. The new building was consecrated in 1858, while both the imperial family and the clergy were present. Many residents of St. Petersburg also came to admire the opening of the new church.
Soon, an architect and an inspector were approved at the cathedral, whose duties included maintaining the building in proper condition. Later it handed over to the Ministry of the Interior. In this regard, the question was repeatedly raised that the cathedral has a dual subordination, although it would be necessary that it belonged to the Church. This dispute continued until the revolution, after which the shrine was nationalized, and later handed over to believers, who were also responsible for the maintenance of the building.
  4. In the pre-war period, many valuables were seized, but the architecture of the temple was not damaged. In 1928 the building was transferred to the department of Glavnauka, deciding to make it one of the museums.
  5. During the Great Patriotic War, exhibits from many Leningrad museums. The structure was damaged by bombings and explosions, and traces of those times are still kept on its walls and columns.
  6. In the post-war period, the temple was restored, again returning the status of a museum to it, and an observation deck was arranged in the domed part. During the same period, they established Foucault pendulum in the central part of St. Isaac's Cathedral, which has been dismantled today.
    Services resumed in 1990.

Architectural and cultural attractions

The temple was built in the style of classicism, but elements of other trends are also observed in its architecture. The height and width of the temple exceeds one hundred meters, and the outer diameter of the dome is almost 26 meters. Total number columns of St. Isaac's Cathedral - 112, and their sizes vary.

  • The main dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral has three parts - lower, outer and middle, and all its elements are made of metal. The cross on top is Greek and made of gold.
At the corners of the main building there are belfries, in which bells are hung, made with the addition of silver and copper to tin. During the construction of this cathedral, more than forty mineral rocks were used, including granite, gray marble, malachite, porphyry, and jasper.
  • On the porticoes of the columns the figures of the apostles are depicted, there are images of angels above the roof, and on all the pediments (they decorate each side of the building) there are gospel-themed high reliefs.
Porticos decorate the building from the outside, and each of them has high reliefs and statues.
Visitors to St. Isaac's Cathedral also note its magnificent interior decoration: rare types of marble were used for facing, and the domes were painted by the best artists of their time.
  • It is worth emphasizing that the temple has both picturesque, and mosaic paintings(there are more than six dozen), as well as a huge number of statues, reliefs and sculptural groups.
  • Attracts attention and pigeon, covered with silver, which is placed on a cable under the dome and symbolizes the Holy Spirit.

Separately, it is worth mentioning the stained-glass window of St. Isaac's Cathedral, which is one of the largest. It depicts the resurrection of Christ and is made of elements of more than a hundred shades.

The history of St. Petersburg knows four St. Isaac's churches. The first wooden church was built in 1707 on the territory of the Admiralty by order of Peter I. Emperor Peter Alekseevich was born on May 30 in the old style - St. Isaac of Dalmatia was his heavenly patron. In 1712, Peter I got married here with his second wife Ekaterina Alekseevna. In 1722, he signed a decree that the sailors of the Baltic Fleet should take the oath only in the church of St. Isaac.

Over time, the small church fell into disrepair, and it was decided to build a new stone St. Isaac's Church, more spacious and closer to the Neva. New in 1760, the rivers were dismantled - the waters of the Neva undermined the foundation of the building. The third cathedral was built further off the taps. First, Antonio Rinaldi began to work on it under Empress Catherine II, and it was completed by Vincenzo Brenna already under Emperor Paul I. The building looked like an absurd building that began with marble slabs and ended with ordinary bricks.

100 years of woods

In 1809, a competition was announced for the construction of a new temple - the third cathedral did not match the appearance Petersburg. The condition of the competition was to keep the three consecrated altars of the current church. Architects submitted projects, but they were all rejected by Alexander I.

Things moved only when the emperor got the drawings of the young architect Auguste Montferrand. In 1818, he prepared a project in which he intended to preserve the altar part of the third cathedral, some interior details, and also to connect the old and new foundations. The project received the approval of the emperor.

The fourth cathedral was solemnly consecrated on June 12/May 30, 1858, the day of the memory of St. Isaac of Dalmatia, in the presence of Emperor Alexander II.

Tribunes for the people were set up on Petrovsky and St. Isaac's Squares, which weren't enough anyway - people climbed even on the roofs of the nearest houses. The scaffolding from the cathedral was finally removed only in 1916.

Interior decoration

St. Isaac's Cathedral has a unique collection of monumental painting of the first half of the 19th century - 150 picturesque images. For work on the murals were involved academic artists K. Bryullov, P. Basin, F. Bruni, V. Shebuev, A. Markov, N. Alekseev, P. Shamshin, F. Zavyalov and others. Plafond of the central dome with an area of more than 800 square meters. m “Theotokos in glory” was made by K. Bryullov, but due to the illness of the master in 1848 it was completed by P. Basin.

In the design of the cathedral, Ural malachite and badakhshan lapis lazuli were used; Shoksha porphyry, black slate, multi-colored marbles: pink Tivdia, yellow Siena, red French.

For interior decoration The cathedral used Russian and Italian marble: white, dark red, white Carrara, rare dark red marble. The peculiarity of the iconostasis is eight malachite and two lapis lazuli columns.

In 1843, a stained-glass window depicting the risen Christ was installed on the altar of the main chapel. The area of the stained-glass window is 28.5 square meters, the height is 9.5 meters, the details are fastened with lead solders. The stained glass window "The Resurrected Christ" is one of the largest monuments in the history of stained glass art in Russia.
