Comparative dimensions of the Titanic and modern liners. Zip Line - downhill from one side of the ship to the other

Maritime transport has been and remains one of the highest priorities. Neither railways, neither aviation, nor even the most promising modern alternative transport projects are able to shake the dominance of ships in the freight transportation market. About the ships with the most impressive dimensions now and will be discussed.

1. Knock Nevis

A supertanker that sailed under the flag of Norway. During the voyage, this vessel changed several names: Seawise Giant, Happy Giant, Jahre Viking, Knock Nevis, Mont. The vessel also changed its scope several times. They started building the ship back in 1974. It took 5 years to create it. Over the past decades, the ship has been improved several times. Its length was 458.45 meters, width - 68.86 meters. The ship weighed 81,879 tons, and the maximum carrying capacity is 564,763 tons. In 2010, the ship was scrapped.

2. Maersk McKinney Moller

Container ship 399 meters long and 59 meters wide. The height of the vessel is 73 meters. The ship is driven by two engines, each with a capacity of 43,000 horsepower. Thanks to this, the maximum speed reaches 23 knots. If you put all the containers from the Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller into the wall, then its length will be 111 kilometers.

3. CMA CGM Jules Verne

French container ship with a displacement of 160 thousand tons. The ship is 396 meters long and 54 meters wide. The maximum speed is 22.5 knots. The engine power of this ship would be enough to provide electricity to a city with a population of 16,000 people. If you put all the containers from the side into a line, then its length will be 97 kilometers.

4 Emma Marsk

Another huge container ship. The ship was built in Denmark. It has 6 similar ships-brothers, created at the same shipyard. The ship is 396 meters long and 63.1 meters wide. The displacement of the container ship exceeds 156,000 metric tons. This monster is loaded with containers using 20 cranes at once! The ship also uses a unique, one-of-a-kind diesel engine at the moment. Its power is 109 thousand hp. For a day of work, it consumes 6,291 liters of fuel.

5. MSC Daniela

Container ship built in 2008. The vessel is 366 meters long and 51 meters wide. It has a design that differs from most analogues, which makes the MSC Daniela a unique ship in many ways. The container ship also stands out for its incredibly thin skin (while maintaining its strength and rigidity), making it very light for its size.

6. CMA CGM Christophe Colomb

The latest French container ship, which was launched in 2009. Can carry 13,300 20ft containers. The ship is 365 meters long and 51 meters wide. This ship belongs to a new generation of container ships. It is also one of the cleanest ships to date in terms of ecology.

7. Oasis of the Seas

First of its kind cruise ship created by the Americans. Thanks to him, a new class of cruise ships appeared - Oasis. 1.5 billion US dollars were spent on the construction of the liner. The ship is 361 meters long and 66 meters wide. The displacement of the passenger ship is 225,000 tons. The liner has 17 decks and 2704 cabins. It can accommodate 6,360 passengers on board, which will be served by another 2,100 personnel. In addition to trivial restaurants, a casino and a theater, there is a whole ice rink.

People have always strived to create really big and powerful things. Take at least these, to achieve absolute dominance.

Original taken from masterok The world's largest ocean liner

Company " Royal Caribbean International has commissioned Finnish shipbuilders to build a completely new class of passenger liners that can hold the palm for years to come. This is how the cruise ship "Oasis of the Seas" was born, which was launched as the largest passenger ship in the world on October 28, 2009. In addition, the liner won first place in another nomination, as the most expensive ship on the planet. $1.24 billion was spent on its construction, the average cost of staying in the port of such a vessel will cost the owners $230,000.

Liners of the new class "Genesis" the first-born "Oasis of the Seas" and already under construction "Allure of the Seas" surpassed its predecessor "Freedom of the Seas" and became 21 m longer, 8.5 m wider and almost 43 percent heavier .

Passenger ships of the Genesis project have become truly remarkable liners. From bold design to a plethora of innovations and technological advances in passenger amenities, all of which will now help attract new customers for an unforgettable sea voyage.

The liner "Oasis of the Seas" has absorbed all the best that is on the ships of the company "Royal Caribbean International". His first voyage December 05, 2009 years will pass on a grand scale, including the most luxurious party at sea. For its guests, this is an amazing sea voyage, and for the cruise liner "Oasis of the Seas" it is the readiness to withstand any threat: hurricanes, giant waves and even contagious diseases.

The ship was built by the STX Europe shipbuilding company specifically for Royal Caribbean International, the construction of the Oasis of the Seas cost £ 855 million. The ship is 361 meters long, 66 meters wide, and its highest point rises above the surface of the water by 72 meters. The displacement of the liner is 225 thousand tons. Oasis is 40% larger than any other cruise ship in the world. The ship, five times the size of the Titanic, can accommodate 6,360 passengers and 2,160 crew on sixteen decks in 2,704 cabins. By the way, the new liner is 2 times larger than the previous record holder - Queen Mary II.

The vessel is equipped with 6 Wärtsilä engines - three 12-cylinder and three 16-cylinder. Together, its power plants generate 96 MW of power, which allows the ship to reach speeds of up to 22.6 knots. The new owners of the ship were very surprised to learn that the Oasis had four more onboard cabins than planned.

New safety practices and design features that are completely new to cruising have made the Oasis of the Seas one of the most anticipated cruise ships in history. The ship has so-called telescopic tubes, which can be reduced if you need to sail under the bridge. The world's largest cruise ship, the Oasis of the Seas, had to be partially dismantled so that it could pass under the Danish Great Belt Bridge. But even after the height of the pipes was reduced, the distance between the ship and the building was less than half a meter. For safety reasons, traffic on the bridge was blocked for 15 minutes. Hundreds of people gathered on both sides of the river to look at the brightly lit cruise ship, which rises above the water like a 20-story building.

There is a lot of entertainment here, both for ordinary inhabitants and for millionaires. The ship is equipped with a water amphitheater, a carousel (made "life-size"), a floating park, an ice rink, a golf course, 4 swimming pools, which required a total of 2300 tons of water, volleyball and basketball courts, a climbing wall and a children's area with theme parks and children's science labs. It has, among other things, 10 spa baths and surf simulators. The liner is so large that it is divided into "districts" with special themes, including a tropical area with palm trees and wines. In total, 12,000 plants and 56 trees have been planted on the ship - this is the world's first park on a ship with an area of 2,000 square meters. m, which has become a kind of analogue of the "Central" Park in New York. Therefore, its passengers can relax in the park in the shade of real trees, listen to Broadway musicals and watch an ice show.

The 750-seat outdoor amphitheater is located at the stern and is modeled after the ancient Greek amphitheatre. The indoor theater, located in another part of the ship, is designed for 1,300 guests. A two-week cruise on the miracle ship "Oasis of the Seas" will cost a rather modest amount: from £1300 for a place in the cheapest cabin. Construction of its twin vessel called "Allure of the Seas" is scheduled for completion in late 2010.

Passengers like to celebrate all the time, but if the cruise is “premium class”, and almost all people are wealthy, then there should be about 20,000 bottles of champagne on board, more than 14,000 kg of meat products, 44,000 fresh eggs, 6,600 kg of salad, 3,000 kg of onions, 22,000 kg of potatoes and this is only a small part of the food supply.

After loading is completed, the Oasis of the Seas cruise ship sets off for its first cruise voyage. And if you forgot something, then alas, it’s too late to correct mistakes. The liner left the port of Everglades and the cruise began.

Doctors on the cruise ship Oasis of the Seas are hoping to avoid another type of natural disaster. If at least two people with a viral disease board the ship, it will spread instantly, since everyone is in a confined space. The liner is equipped with disinfectants in all public places, especially before meals.

Cruises on the liner are, as a rule, a guarantee of first-class food 24 hours a day. Especially during holiday cruises, when on board the liner its staff arranges a real feast. The restaurants serve the most exquisite dishes.

And waste disposal is the most important part of the internal structure of the vessel. The Oasis of the Seas liner has its own waste processing plant, where all garbage is carefully sorted. Tin cans are pressed, glass is shattered to prepare for recycling, and all other solid waste is stored until it is landfilled at the nearest port, because the Oasis of the Seas cruise ship is an environmentally friendly ship.

Over three hundred cooks work on board. It is in the galley that the products are located, the cost of which is 2 million US dollars. Due to strict hygiene regulations, the galley is not open to anyone except registered employees. About 70,000 main dishes are served daily on the ship, of which 15,000 are desserts.

All entertainment during the cruise is the responsibility of the cruise director. The most difficult part of his job: to make everything so that the guests were satisfied. He plans entertainment, communicates with guests and keeps them in good spirits. It has its own film studio on board. Its employees film daily material on board the liner, and then, after editing, they broadcast it to the cabins, usually in the evening.

Not less than amazing place on cruise ship"Oasis of the Seas" is considered the "Royal Promenade", which runs through the center of the ship. There is a unique transparent backlit elevator. This place has so many shops and bars that it looks like small town. On board the cruise ship "Oasis of the Seas" you can find a lot of entertainment.

Traditionally, an artificial wave pool is installed on the upper deck. Its pumps pump up to 112,000 liters of water per minute.

One of the most popular events on the ship is the theatre, which seats about 2,000 people. The ice show also attracts a lot of spectators. To ensure that everything goes smoothly, the engineers turn on the ship's stabilization system.

February 24, 2010- Royal Caribbean realized that the idea of tracking one person to others might appeal to many, and they were right, the novelty quickly became very popular

On the largest cruise ship in world oasis of the Seas, Royal Carribeans offer the latest in IT technology, ID bracelets and iPhones so that people can find each other in the giant liner's myriad spaces. Wristbands are personal RFID identifiers, although they can be not only bracelets, but also badges or clips. WiFi operates throughout the ship, the signal from the bracelet via WiFi goes to the Apple iPhone mobile phone, equipped with a detailed liner diagram, that is, at any time one person can know exactly where the other is.

There are almost 1,000 WiFi spots on the ship, and at first, the company just wanted to make sure that people could communicate with each other via mobile phones and not only to communicate, through the ship's iPhone you can get this or that information, order a service, etc., but then they realized that the idea of tracking one person might appeal to others, and they turned out to be right, the novelty quickly became very popular. It is not difficult to guess that parents became the main consumers of identifiers. The liner is incredibly huge, there are a lot of places where a child can get lost, and this can become a problem not only for parents, but for the entire crew, searching for a lost person on a ship is a many-hour and extremely difficult operation, a general ship emergency, and preferably at this time drive all other passengers into cabins or public areas.

At first, Oasis of the Seas offered badges as an identifier, but then they went further and now they offer bracelets, which is much more convenient, since they can serve as a kind of pager. If you give a signal from the iPhone, the bracelet starts to vibrate, and its owner will understand that they are looking for him. If this is a child, then okay, but teenagers are unlikely to like such IT surveillance. The young man met a girl at a disco and retired with her in a darker and more secluded place, since there are plenty of such places on a giant liner, and the damned bracelets suddenly begin to vibrate, what is it like? But what a blessing to parents ...

The device works on the basis of Ekahau's real-time RTLS location system, the signal from the identifier is processed by the DeFi Royal Connect program and issued to the end server, and from there it gets to the iPhone, the location accuracy is 3-3.5 meters. The bracelets are powered by rechargeable batteries, and there is more than enough charge for a week-long cruise. After the end of the cruise, the bracelets are handed over to the administration and charged again. Reviews, they say in Royal Caribbean, are still very good, but they still do not know how and where this novelty can be used, in addition to surveillance, they collect data. During cruises, users of the electronic spy are interviewed, and it is hoped that the information collected will expand the scope of Wi-Fi RFID identifiers.

Some numbers:

5,000 kilometers of electrical wiring

12,000 plants, including real trees, but the plants will be installed and planted later, upon the arrival of the liner in the USA

7,000 works of art will decorate the premises of the liner or be displayed in the halls of 90,000 square meters of carpeted floors

The construction of the liner took 525,000 square meters of steel - an area equivalent to 72 football fields

And did you know that…

Propellers for this giant will be manufactured by a Russian plant - Baltiysky Zavod OJSC

OJSC Baltiysky Zavod has completed the manufacture of the first propeller designed for the world's largest ocean cruise liner Genesis. The vessel, 360 meters long, is being built by the Norwegian company Aker Yards at its shipyard in Finland. The Baltic Shipyard will equip the liner with two propellers. The diameter of each product is more than 6 meters.
Contracts for the manufacture of propellers for cruise liners Genesis, Super Star Libra, Celebrity and Hall, which are being built at the Finnish shipyard, were signed by Baltiysky Zavod OJSC (St. Petersburg) and FSUE Zvezdochka (Severodvinsk) in 2007. According to the terms of the agreements, the St. Petersburg enterprise will current year will supply the customer with several dozen sets of blades, hubs and fairings, as well as sets of spare parts for propellers. The value of the contracts is more than 10 million euros.

Baltiysky Zavod is the only manufacturer in Russia of large propellers (weighing up to 70 tons, diameter - up to 8 m) made of bronze and brass. The company manufactures modern propellers for all types of warships and submarines; large-capacity tankers and bulk carriers; nuclear and diesel-electric icebreakers; container ships and passenger ships; small coastal, river and pleasure craft; fast ships and boats.

One evening, the captain of the liner gives dinner to his guests. Cruisers love formal occasions. Each of them tries to bring home the memory of sea voyage for this, several professional photographers work on board the vessel. Approximately 30,000 photographs will be taken during the cruise.

The charm of any cruise travel lies in the fact that in the ports where the liner stops, passengers will find a lot of new sensations.

On the liner, everything is done for customers, but there are always passengers who behave badly and interfere with others. Such people are asked to leave the ship at the nearest port. But the worst thing is when a passenger dies on board. Then the whole team has to console his loved ones. The body is placed in its own morgue.

Crew members and attendants lead a full life, but completely isolated from the guests. They are not allowed to use the main aisles on board the ship unless absolutely necessary. All personnel move through a hidden system of service corridors and stairs. To do this, in the center of this labyrinth is the main passage that runs along the entire length of the ship. It has the unofficial name E-95, and crew members use it to get to their cabins, where they can take a break from the guests. Laundry on such a ship is one of the busiest among all types of ships. The employees of this plant work around the clock.

In nightclubs liner« Oasis of the Seas» DJs do their job well. While they are warming up the audience, night falls on the ship and then the ship lights up most of out of 750,000 lamps. Electricity on the cruise ship is generated by diesel generators made to order by the company " Wartsilla».

The most secure room on a cruise ship is the engineering control post. From here they monitor the weather situation, control the work power plant and control all ship systems. This is the center of power passenger ship, so entry here is strictly prohibited.

On liner« Oasis of the Seas» 4,500 km of electrical cable has been laid, so the main thing for the ship’s engineers is not bad weather, but a fire. Such liner consumes an average of up to 11,000 kg of fuel per hour. A sudden spark in any place is much more dangerous than a hurricane. The operating costs are huge - even a slight deviation from the course can result in a considerable amount.

During bad weather and the impossibility of safely entering the port, the captain of the vessel can give an order not to enter the port, and the cruise director immediately announces the changed plans to the passengers. This adds to the work of the entertainment service as everyone stays on board.

A cruise ship« Oasis of the Seas» became the first passenger ship in the world to have seven independent theme areas on board Central Park, Boardwalk, Royal Promenade, Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone so no one gets discouraged here.

Central Park is under open sky in the center of the ship and forms a public space with sidewalks, flowers and trees. Its platforms serve for walks on fresh air, street performances and concerts. Above the surroundings of the park, 334 cabins stretch to the height of a five-story building, 254 of which have balconies that overlook the park. Central Park has a number of boutiques, a garden, many gazebos, a sculpture park, cafes, restaurants and a wine bar.

Despite the size liner, some passengers suffer from seasickness. Although the entire staff maintains a straight face, some have to deal with a variety of problems on board, from natural disasters to crime. The security service in civilian clothes takes over this case. They have video surveillance cameras and the ship's own law enforcement agencies at their disposal.

In the event of an evacuation cruise ship a modern system of rescue boats is provided, as well as inflatable life rafts, which are located at strategic points on the ship. Solving safety and security issues, the requirement of guests. Even on such liners as " Oasis of the Seas» with excellent organization, people can sometimes get lost. Often they are late in ports, so the liner is always reminded that the ship is leaving exactly on schedule.

On the liner huge selection cabins, which include deluxe rooms and family rooms. A novelty is 25 duplex rooms with balconies. Each of them covers an area of 1524 sq. m and is designed for six people. The room has its own piano, bar, jacuzzi and library. Balcony area 78 sq. meters. All cabins are equipped with LCD TVs, bathrooms with plenty of mirrors.

Here we can see the construction process

April 14th, 2010 02:24 am

I saw secret cards
I know where we are going.
Captain, I've come to say goodbye to you, to you
And your ship.

On April 14, 1912, one of the largest shipwrecks in the world occurred. During its maiden voyage, the British steamer of the White Star Line, the largest passenger liner world at the time of its construction, the second of the three Olympic twin steamers, called the Titanic, collided with an iceberg and sank after 2 hours and 40 minutes. On board the Titanic were 1,316 passengers and 892 crew members, a total of 2,208 people. Of these, 706 people survived, more than 1500 died. The Titanic disaster has become more than legendary ... On the eve of the 98th anniversary of the disaster, we decided to make a post about the history of the Titanic with photos of this liner.

I went down into the hold
I talked there
With the master - the head of the rats.
Rats come ashore
At the nearest port
Hoping to be saved.

WHAT WAS HE LIKE

The Titanic was laid down on March 31, 1909 at the shipyards of the Harland and Wolf shipbuilding company, but two years later, on May 31, 1911, and almost a year later, on April 2, 1912, it passed sea trials ... Until the fatal less than two weeks left...

The laying of the keel of the Titanic. The very beginning of the story

An outline comparative drawing will help to present the dimensions of the Titanic:

Pay attention to how another famous modern liner Queen Mary 2 is larger than the Titanic. And how grandiose the Titanic is in comparison with other silhouettes ... In terms of numbers. we can say that the height of the ship from the keel to the tops of the pipes was 53 whole and 4 tenths of a meter.

Why was the Titanic considered unsinkable? thanks to fifteen watertight bulkheads in the hold. In theory. they created sixteen watertight compartments. with the help of many more partitions, dividing - as a result, into 46 watertight compartments. In theory, the Titanic was built in such a way that it could stay afloat if any two of its 16 watertight compartments were flooded, any three of the first five compartments, or all of the first four compartments ... But ... only in theory .. .

In the photo of the "innards" of the ship: its steam engines, turbines, tube shaft and rotor.

boats

One of the remarkable moments in the Titanic disaster was that the people on board were sorely lacking boats ... It turns out that this is because, in formal accordance with the requirements of the British Merchant Shipping Code in force, the ship had 20 lifeboats, which were enough for landing 1178 people, that is, for 50% of the people who were on board at that moment and 30% of the planned load. This was taken into account with the expectation of increasing the walking space on the deck of the passengers of the ship.

HOW HE DRONKED

The moment of the collision of the liner with the iceberg is devoted to many works, both in cinema and in painting. But we focus on the facts and assign a chronology from ... to ...:

The path of the Titanic...

Wednesday, April 10, 1912
12:00 - The Titanic leaves the Southampton harbor wall and narrowly avoids a collision with American liner"NY".
19:00 Stop in Cherbourg (France) to pick up passengers and mail.
21:00 - Titanic left Cherbourg and headed for Queenstown (Ireland).

Thursday, April 11, 1912
12:30 - stop in Queenstown to pick up passengers and mail; one member of the crew deserts from the Titanic.
14:00 - The Titanic leaves Queenstown with 1,316 passengers and 891 crew on board.

Sunday, April 14, 1912
0900 hours - Caronia reports ice at 42°N, 49-51°W.
13:42 - "Baltik" reports the presence of ice in the area of 41°51'N, 49°52'W.
13:45 - America reports ice at 41°27'N, 50°8'W.
19:00 - air temperature 43 ° Fahrenheit (6 ° C).
19:30 - air temperature 39 ° Fahrenheit (3.9 ° C).
19:30 - The Californian reports ice at 42°3'N, 49°9'W.
21:00 - air temperature 33 ° Fahrenheit (0.6 ° C).
21:30 - Second Officer Lightoller warns the ship's carpenter and watchmen in the engine room that it is necessary to monitor the fresh water system - water in the pipelines may freeze; he tells the lookout to watch the appearance of ice.
21:40 - Mesaba reports ice at 42°-41°25'N, 49°-50°30'W.
22:00 - air temperature 32 ° Fahrenheit (0 ° C).
10:30 p.m. - Sea water temperature dropped to 31° Fahrenheit (-0.56°C).
11:00 p.m. — The Californian warns of ice, but the Titanic's radio operator cuts off the radio before the Californian can give the area's coordinates.
23:40 - At a point with coordinates 41 ° 46 'north latitude, 50 ° 14 ' west longitude (later it turned out that these coordinates were calculated incorrectly), an iceberg was sighted at a distance of about 450 meters straight ahead. Despite the maneuver, after 39 seconds, the underwater part of the ship touched, and the ship's hull received numerous small holes for a length of about 100 meters. Of the 16 watertight compartments of the vessel, 6 were cut through (in the sixth, the leak was extremely insignificant).

“- There is ice in front of us!” Fleet shouted and immediately hit the bell hanging in the crow's nest. Three blows were a signal that meant that there was some object right on the course. At the same time, he rushed to the phone connecting the crow's nest with the bridge. Sixth mate J.P. Moody responded almost instantly.
- Ice straight ahead - Fleet shouted.
"Thank you," Moody replied (his polite reply became part of the legend).

Monday, April 15, 1912
00:05 - ordered to uncover lifeboats and call crew members and passengers to muster points.
00:15 - the first radiotelegraph signal for help was transmitted from the Titanic.
00:45 - The first flare is fired and the first lifeboat (No. 7) is launched.
01:15 - Class 3 passengers are allowed on deck.
01:40 - The last flare is fired.
02:05 - the last lifeboat is launched (collapsible boat D).
02:10 - the last radiotelegraph signals were transmitted.
02:17 - Electric lighting goes out.
02:18 - "Titanic" rapidly sinking breaks into three parts (this became known in 1996 after the Narjolet expedition) [source not specified 30 days].
02:20 - The Titanic sank.
03:30 - flares fired from the Carpathia are noticed from the lifeboats.
04:10 - Carpathia picked up the first lifeboat from the Titanic (boat No. 2).
08:30 - Carpathia picked up the last (No. 12) lifeboat from the Titanic.
08:50 - Carpathia, taking on board 704 people who escaped from the Titanic, heads for New York.

The first news about the sinking of the Titanic. By the way, in the early days, newspapers reported incorrect information about the number of victims, based on conflicting rumors.

But
While the Titanic is sailing.
Nobody wants to think about
Bye, bye, the Titanic is sailing.

The dead and the survivors of the crash

Almost all the women and children from cabins 1 and 2 were saved. More than half of the women and children in Class 3 cabins died as they had difficulty finding their way up through the maze of narrow corridors. Nearly all of the men also died. The tragedy of the Paulson family claimed the lives of Alma's mother and all her four young children, whom Father Nils was waiting in vain for in New York.

323 men (20% of all adult men) and 331 women (75% of all adult women) survived, including Violet Jessop, Dorothy Gibson, Molly Brown, Lucy Duff Gordon and others.

In May 2006, at the age of 99, the last American eyewitness who survived the crash of the Titanic died. This was reported by the Boston funeral home. She died yesterday at her home. Swedish-born Lillian Gertrud Asplund (Swed. Lillian Gertrud Asplund), who was five years old at the time of the disaster, lost her father in her and three brothers. Her mother and brother, who was then three years old, survived. They were third-class passengers and escaped in boat number 15. Asplund was the last to remember how the tragedy happened, but she avoided publicity and rarely spoke about this event.

The last passenger on the Titanic, Millvina Dean, who was two and a half months old at the time of the ship's sinking, died on May 31, 2009. Her ashes were scattered to the wind on October 24, 2009 in the port of Southampton, from where the Titanic began its only voyage.

Sorry ... A little "black humor" about - also does not hurt

The sailors sold the screw to the Eskimos for a barrel of wine,
And the judge and the priest argue all night
Finding out whose fault it is.
And the judge says it's all about the law
And the priest - what's the matter in love.
But in the light of lightning it becomes clear -
Everyone has blood on their hands.

ON THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA...

On September 1, 1985, an expedition led by the director of the Institute of Oceanology in Woods Hall, Massachusetts, Dr. Robert Ballard, discovered the location of the Titanic at the bottom Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 3750 meters. Here are the first photos of the Titanic AFTER the tragedy:

While the Titanic is sailing.
Nobody wants to think about
Bye, bye, the Titanic is sailing.

I saw sharks astern
Sharks swallow saliva
Captain, all sharks know
That we will soon go to the bottom.

That, in fact, is all ... Of course, one could say that Cameron is also going to shoot his film in 3D - just in time for the centenary of the disaster, one could recall other works, from books to other films, but why... From the point of view of reflecting the Titanic catastrophe in art, I personally am more impressed by the song from Butusov. By the way, which is funny, now tourists are offered to tickle their nerves, in a voyage similar to the path of the Titanic:
"The new superliner Golden Princess, with a capacity of 3,800 passengers, will soon set off for the shores of Antarctica," Vzglyad reports.

This is the largest ship in the history of Antarctic tourism. The huge cruise ship, like the infamous Titanic, has no ice protection and will sail in unexplored waters, making a voyage to Antarctica a very risky undertaking."

Ahead rises a cold wall
Arctic ice.
But no one wants to think about
Where is the Titanic sailing?
Nobody wants to think about
Bye, bye, the Titanic is sailing.

I didn’t compose all this at night myself, I just collected in one post the fruits of the work of other people - rather for myself (from childhood obsessed with the Titanic disaster - long before the film, by the way). These are the people I would like to thank:
1. For the most complete photo selection of the history of the Titanic - thanks,.

UPD: Stories of several men who died on the Titanic found on LiveJournal mi3ch and stolen with his kind permission:

Lieutenant Colonel John Jacob Astor IV - American millionaire, businessman, writer, participant in the Spanish-American War. In 1894, he wrote the novel Travels to Other Worlds, which describes journeys to Saturn and Jupiter in 2088. Astor was the richest passenger on board the Titanic.
He put his wife in the boat along with the maid and the nurse. He asked permission to sit with them. He was refused. He didn't insist.

Major Archibald Willingham Butt - chief military aide to US Presidents Roosevelt and Taft. Helped women and children to take places in the boats.

Benjamin Guggenheim is a millionaire. He put his beloved and her maid in the boat. Realizing that the situation was much more serious and he would not be able to escape, Guggenheim returned with the valet to the cabin, where they changed into tailcoats. He sat down with him at a table in the central hall, where he sipped his whiskey slowly, watching the catastrophe. When someone suggested that they try to save themselves, Guggenheim replied: "We are dressed according to our position and are ready to die like gentlemen."

Lieutenant William McMaster Murdoch was the officer in charge on the bridge on the night of the Titanic's collision with the iceberg. After the collision, Murdoch supervised the evacuation of passengers from the starboard side, during which he launched 10 lifeboats, which saved 75% of all the survivors of the crash.

Francis Davis Millett is an American painter and sculptor. He was last seen helping to put women and children into boats.

Juozas Montvila is a Lithuanian Catholic priest. According to surviving eyewitnesses, he did not take the opportunity to take a seat in a lifeboat, but instead consoled people, listened to those who wanted to confess.

James Paul Moody is the sixth officer of the Titanic. Helped lower lifeboats 12, 14, and 16. When boat 14 was being loaded, Fifth Officer Harold Lowe wanted the junior officer to get into it, but Moody gave him his seat.

William Thomas Steed - British journalist, publicist, public figure, Esperanto, promoted the principle of "Peace through Arbitration", a likely contender for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1912, and also one of the pioneers of investigative journalism. After the ship collided with an iceberg, he helped put women and children into lifeboats. Then he went to the smoking room, where he was last seen reading a book in an armchair.

George Danton Widener is an American businessman and millionaire. After the collision of the ship, he put his wife and maid in a lifeboat.

John George Phillips is the senior radio operator on the Titanic and the first operator in history to send an international signal to save the S.O.S. Until the last minute, he did not leave the radio room, transmitting signals for help.

Wallace Henry Hartley is a British violinist and bandleader of the Titanic. After the Titanic hit the iceberg, Hartley and his orchestra began playing music to keep the passengers calm as they boarded the lifeboats. Many of the survivors said that the orchestra continued to play until the very end. None of the orchestra members survived.

Isidor Strauss is a German-American entrepreneur, co-owner of Macy's, the largest American department store chain. Member of the US House of Representatives. After the disaster, one of the officers offered Isidor and his wife Ida to get into the boat together, but Isidor refused, deciding to share the fate of other drowning men He tried to put Ida into the boat, but she refused to leave her husband. Instead, the Strauss put their maid in the boat.

Thomas Andrews Jr. - Irish businessman and shipbuilder, designer of the Titanic. During the evacuation, he helped passengers board the boats. He was last seen in the smoking room near the fireplace, looking at a painting of Port Plymouth. The Titanic was supposed to visit it on its way back. According to other accounts, Thomas Andrews was last seen throwing sun loungers from the promenade deck into the water so that passengers who were in the water could use them as life rafts.

The tragic story of the Titanic has become so iconic that the image of this ship will now be referred to endlessly. The other day I noticed in LiveJournal a whole series of posts dedicated to the 101st anniversary of the disaster. However, I was much more interested in the post of one of the friends Compare "Titanic" with ...
Since it is very voluminous, I decided to make a small "squeeze" out of it. Those who are especially interested can see the original at the link (a lot of pictures and bukoff).

This is how you can roughly compare the legendary Titanic with a modern liner. And what is this modern ship? Some call him the most big liner in the world. However, we know that the largest liner in the world is Oasis of the Seas and it is 361 meters long. And what do we read about this giant? Somewhere 362 meters, somewhere 361, and somewhere 360 meters. Do you know how this is explained? And here's how: along with the twin ship Oasis of the Seas is the largest passenger ship in the world as of November 2010: the length of both cruise ships is about 360 m (depending on temperature), and Allure of the Seas 5 cm longer than his sister.

After all, the designers, well, they would have made a couple of meters for sure! In general, we will consider that this ship is one of the largest in the world.

"Allure of the Seas" and "Titanic":

Here's another comparison:

Commissioned at the end of 2010 is a sh11-deck vessel weighing 225282 tons can take on board 5400 passengers who will be accommodated in 2700 cabins
« Allure of the Seas»is divided into seven thematic areas, which include: Central Park, Boardwalk, Royal Promenade, Pool and Sports Zone, Vitality Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone.

You have already read and heard about the Titanic many times. The history of the creation and crash of the liner is overgrown with rumors and myths. For more than 100 years, the British steamship has been haunting the minds of people trying to find the answer - why did the Titanic sink?

The history of the legendary liner is interesting for three reasons:

Departure day
  • it was the largest ship for 1912;
  • the number of victims turned the catastrophe into a global failure;
  • finally, James Cameron, with his film, singled out the history of the liner from general list maritime disasters, A .

We will tell you everything about the Titanic, as it was in reality. About how long the Titanic is in meters, how much the Titanic sank, and who was really behind the massive disaster.

Where did the Titanic sail from and to?

We know from Cameron's film that the liner was bound for New York. The American up-and-coming city was to be the final stop. But far from everyone knows for sure where the Titanic sailed from, considering that London was the starting point. The capital of Great Britain was not in the ranks of seaports, and therefore the steamer could not leave from there.

The fateful flight began from Southampton, a major English port, from where transatlantic flights ran. The path of the Titanic on the map clearly shows the movement. Southampton is both a port and a city located in the southern part of England (Hampshire).

See how the route of the Titanic ran on the map:

Dimensions of the Titanic in meters

To understand more about the Titanic, the causes of the disaster must be disclosed, starting with the dimensions of the ship.

How many meters is the Titanic in length and in other dimensions:

  • exact length - 299.1 m;
  • width - 28.19 m;
  • height from the keel - 53.3 m.

There is also such a question - how many decks did the Titanic have? Only 8. Boats were located on top, because upper deck called a boat. The rest were distributed according to the letter designation.

  • A - deck I class. Its peculiarity is limited in size - it did not lie down the entire length of the vessel;
  • B - anchors were located in the front of the deck and its dimensions were also shorter - by 37 meters of deck C;
  • C - deck with a galley, a mess for the crew and a promenade for class III.
  • D - walking area;
  • E - cabins I, II classes;
  • F - cabins II and III classes;
  • G - deck with boiler rooms in the middle.

Finally, how much does the Titanic weigh? The displacement of the largest ship of the early 20th century is 52,310 tons.

Titanic: the story of the crash

What year did the Titanic sink? The famous disaster occurred on the night of April 14, 1912. It was the fifth day of the trip. Chronicles indicate that at 23:40 the liner survived a collision with an iceberg and after 2 hours 40 minutes (2:20 a.m.) it went under water.

Further investigations showed that the crew received 7 weather warnings, but this did not prevent the ship from reducing its speed limit. The iceberg was sighted directly ahead of us too late to take precautions. As a result - holes in the starboard side. Ice damaged 90 m of hull and 5 bow compartments. This was enough to sink the liner.

Tickets for the new liner were more expensive than for other ships. If a person was used to traveling in first class, then on the Titanic he would have to transfer to second class.

Edward Smith, the captain of the ship, began the evacuation after midnight: a distress call was sent, the attention of other ships was attracted by flares, lifeboats went to the water. But the rescue was slow and uncoordinated - there was an empty place in the boats while the Titanic was sinking, the water temperature did not rise above two degrees below zero, and the first steamer arrived in time only half an hour after the disaster.

Titanic: how many people died and survived

How many people survived on the Titanic? No one will say the exact data, as they could not say this on the fateful night. The list of Titanic passengers initially changed in practice, but not on paper: some canceled the trip at the time of departure and were not crossed out, others traveled anonymously under assumed names, and others were listed as dead on the Titanic several times.

It is only approximately possible to say how many people drowned on the Titanic - about 1500 (minimum 1490 - maximum 1635). Among them was Edward Smith with some assistants, 8 musicians from the famous orchestra, large investors and businessmen.

Classiness was felt even after death - the bodies of the dead from the first class were embalmed and placed in coffins, the second and third classes were given bags and boxes. When the embalming agents ran out, the bodies of unknown third-class passengers were simply thrown into the water (according to the rules, unembalmed corpses could not be brought to the port).

The bodies were found within a radius of 80 km from the crash site, and due to the current of the Gulf Stream, many were dispersed even further.

Photos of dead people

Initially, it was known how many passengers were on the Titanic, although not completely:

  • crew of 900 people;
  • 195 first class;
  • 255 second class;
  • 493 people of the third class.

Some passengers left at intermediate ports, some called. It is believed that the liner went to the fatal route with a staff of 1317 people, of which 124 are children.

Titanic: scuttling depth - 3750 m

The English steamer could accommodate 2,566 people, of which 1,034 seats were for first-class passengers. The half-load of the liner is due to the fact that transatlantic flights were not popular in April. At that time, a coal strike broke out, this disrupted coal supplies, schedules and changes in plans.

The question of how many people escaped from the Titanic was difficult to answer, because rescue operations passed since different courts, and the slow connection did not provide fast data delivery.

After the crash, only 2/3 of the delivered bodies were identified. Some were buried locally, the rest were sent home. In the disaster area, bodies in white vests were found for a long time. Of the 1,500 people who died, only 333 bodies were found.

How deep is the Titanic

When answering the question about the depth at which the Titanic sank, one must remember about the pieces carried by the currents (by the way, they learned about this only in the 80s, before that it was believed that the liner sank to the bottom entirely). The wreckage of the liner on the night of the crash went at a depth of 3750 m. The bow was thrown 600 m from the stern.

The place where the Titanic sank, on the map:

In which ocean did the Titanic sink? - in the Atlantic.

Titanic lifted from the bottom of the ocean

They wanted to raise the ship from the moment of the crash. Initiative plans were put forward by relatives of the dead from the first class. But 1912 did not yet know the necessary technologies. The war, lack of knowledge and funds delayed the search for the sunken ship for a hundred years. Since 1985, 17 expeditions have been carried out, during which 5,000 items and large plating have been raised to the surface, but the ship itself has remained at the bottom of the ocean.

What does the Titanic look like now?

In the time since the crash, the ship has become covered in marine life. Rust, painstaking work of invertebrates and natural decomposition processes have changed the structures beyond recognition. By this time, the bodies had already completely decomposed, and by the 22nd century, only anchors and boilers would remain from the Titanic - the most massive metal structures.

Even now the interiors of the decks have been destroyed, the cabins and halls have collapsed.

Titanic, Britannic and Olympic

All three ships were manufactured by the Harland and Wolf shipbuilding company. Before the Titanic, the Olympic saw the world. It is easy to see a fatal predisposition in the fate of the three ships. The first liner was wrecked as a result of a collision with a cruiser. Not such a large-scale disaster, but still an impressive failure.

Then the story of the Titanic, which received a wide response in the world, and, finally, the Gigantic. They tried to make this ship especially durable, given the mistakes of previous liners. He was even launched into the water, but the First World War disrupted the plans. The giant became a hospital ship called the Britannic.

He then just managed to carry out 5 quiet flights, and on the sixth there was a disaster. Having been blown up by a German mine, the Britannic rapidly sank. The mistakes of the past and the preparedness of the captain made it possible to save maximum amount people - 1036 out of 1066.

Comparison of the Titanic with modern liners: photo

Is it possible to talk about evil fate, remembering the Titanic? The history of the creation and crash of the liner were studied in detail, the facts were revealed, even through time. And yet the truth is only now being revealed. The reason the Titanic is attracting attention is to hide its true motive - to create a currency system and destroy opponents. Doubt? Then read on.
