My father and I went to Patagonia at the beginning of the year, we wanted to see something different and different. After a 10 hour drive down a long and muddy road, we finally made it to marble caves. We hired a boat to get closer, and I waited for the perfect light to capture those intricate blue swirls. The effort was worth it.

7. Runner-up, People: Point of Interest, Amsterdam, North Holland, Netherlands

A crowd of spectators stand in front of Rembrandt's masterpiece The Sindiki at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. For example, the Earth itself is in a state of rotation, as well as the atoms that make up everything.

10 Honorable Mention, Nature: Mount Bromo, East Java, Indonesia

Mount Bromo is small but active volcano in East Java, Indonesia. On January 17, 2016, I was just nearby when an increase in seismic activity was noted. This photo was taken from the courtyard of a local hotel where I was waiting with my camera. The volcano threw out a fountain of ash that seemed to glow. The photo is very special to me - a rare eruption of Mount Bromo with excellent lighting.

The photo that was awarded the main victory shows an orangutan peeking out from behind a tree. The shot was taken by photographer Jayaprakash Joghee Bojan as he spotted a primate crossing a river in Indonesia. “Growing palm oil extraction is harming this endangered monkey, forcing it, accustomed to living in trees, to resort to unusual behavior, such as wading through a crocodile-infested river, to survive,” the author wrote.
