Jordan is it dangerous to travel now. Which Islamic countries are unsafe to go on vacation. The city of Petra - the mysterious heritage of Jordan

It is safe to say that Jordan is one of the safest Arab countries in the Middle East. Despite the proximity to such restless neighbors as Syria, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Palestine, which now and then shake both internal and external problems, the Jordanian government is trying its best to maintain stability within the country, and this is by and large successful. There is a problem with refugees from Iraq, Syria and Libya in the country, but it is not yet critical. Nevertheless, for the time being, it is worth refraining from traveling in close proximity to the Jordanian-Syrian border. In all cases of traveling around the country, and especially in border areas, it is worth carrying a passport with you in case of checking documents.

Crime in the country is very low due to a tough police regime, as well as established traditions. Crimes against the person are practically non-existent.

Also, the Jordanians are quite different from neighboring Muslim countries in their tolerance: even if you break any local rules and traditions, the locals will not behave aggressively, but with calmness and patience they will explain to you how to behave.

  • Be sure to ask permission before taking a photo of someone. Also, do not shoot military installations and transport infrastructure.
  • When traveling around the country, it is recommended that you always have your passport with you in case of a possible verification of documents. This is especially true of the areas bordering Israel with the Dead Sea, the Jordan Valley and the Arava.
  • Jordanians are very friendly. Greetings and farewells are usually accompanied by a handshake.
  • Local gesture etiquette is quite complicated, so you should not actively gesture "in public" - many of our gestures may seem offensive to a local resident.
  • The left hand is considered "unclean" here. Therefore, you should not give and receive things (especially food) or money with your left hand.
  • Dress modestly, not provocatively. Short skirts, shorts, open arms and shoulders are not welcome. At the pool or on the beach, you can safely be naked to the swimsuit, but it is absolutely not worth appearing in this form in public places.
  • Remember that some mosques are not allowed for non-Muslims.
  • It is considered indecent for women to sit in the front seat of a car, so don't be surprised if a taxi refuses to drive and demands that a woman move to the back seat.

Medicine, health in Jordan

No entry to Jordan mandatory requirement about vaccinations, but it is recommended to get vaccinated against hepatitis A and B, polio, tetanus and typhoid fever. If you are coming from areas infected with yellow fever, vaccination is mandatory. Medicines that you regularly use and that are prescribed by a doctor should be imported in their original packaging and with a prescription. In general, you should take care of having a tourist first aid kit at home: although there are pharmacies here, you may not find what you need in them.

Medical care in Jordan is quite developed, but there are high-quality clinics only in major cities. There are doctors in hotels, but calls to them are paid. Emergency help, which does not require hospitalization - is free. It is highly recommended to have an insurance policy.

It is believed that the tap water here is clean and drinkable. However, we recommend drinking only store-bought bottled water. Avoid ice in drinks.

Road traffic, road safety

In Jordan, right-hand traffic is established, as in Russia. The roads are of different quality: there are good ones, but there are also dead ones and gradually turning into deserts, where you can only go by jeep. Road signs are dubbed in English. In tourist places, there are special tourist signs on a brown background, showing the direction and driving directions in tourist places. The traffic outside the city is quite calm, but in the cities the traffic is chaotic and quite dangerous, often against the rules. In general, traffic in cities is poorly organized, there are not enough signs and markings. The speed limit in cities is 60 kilometers per hour, outside the city 80 kilometers per hour. On the Amman-Aqaba highway, 110 kilometers per hour is allowed. Driving at night is not recommended. Gas stations are rare outside of cities, so fill up as soon as possible.

Jordan has signed the Geneva Convention on Road Traffic and according to it, the country can be driven on an international driving license, made in the form of a book in addition to customary rights(do not confuse them with "international" rights made of plastic, see The whole truth about driving licenses abroad). However, in practice, you can rent a car and drive it under the usual national rights issued in Russia. If only the driving experience was more than 1 year. There are no problems with the police on such rights.

You can find a rental office on site upon arrival, but it is cheaper and more convenient to pre-book a car in one of the world's car rental companies, such as Avis. In this case, you can start a road trip around the country directly from the airport upon arrival. Traveling outside the country on rented vehicles is prohibited.

Motorcycle rental in Jordan is not common.

Customs regulations in Jordan

Persons over 18 years old are allowed to import duty-free into the country:

  • 200 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 200 grams of tobacco
  • 1 liter of alcoholic drinks
  • one or two open bottles of eau de toilette

The import of foreign currency is not limited, but the imported amount should be declared so that later there are no problems with its export. The import of Israeli currency is prohibited.

First - Jordan ... The vacation was scheduled for March last year with an eye to go to the Maldives, but a disaster happened there, the husband did not dare to go in such an environment, it was impossible to reschedule the vacation, but I already wanted to dive. I’ll make a reservation right away that we are middle-aged people and are engaged exclusively in snorkeling and educational tourism. Since Egypt is traveled and traveled up and down, we decided to go to the same Red Sea in Jordan, because we really wanted to visit Petra as a place that occupies the third position in the lists of the 100 most interesting objects peace. We contacted Ankhar from the Jordanian club without any problems and booked a trip just on the fly, and for some reason it didn’t even occur to me to find out something else somewhere (for which we paid the price…).

Our route:
March 11-13 - Crown Plaza **** HB in Petra
March 13-24 - Radisson SAS **** VV in Aqaba
March 24-25 - Gardenia *** VV in Amman
Paid transfers and excursions:
March 11 - Amman Airport - Petra
March 13 - Petra - Wadi Rum (excursion by jeep to the desert)
March 25 - Amman - airport
Tickets were ordered for the Jordanian Royal Lines ($380 each), visas were issued in Moscow ($20 each). The whole tour cost $2745 for two. We flew from Sheremetyevo, maybe because the flight was combined with Aeroflot, there was a delay of 2 hours, why and why no one explained. Not Europe... Back, I will make a reservation right away, they took off and flew without incident.

The first thing that caught my eye upon arrival was a whole group of middle-aged, but friendly and Russian-speaking guides-Jordanians who met their groups (not us), one of them, having learned that we already had a visa, showed where to go next and where we can wait for our Sameer. By the way, they changed the money immediately at the airport upon arrival and, unlike the information in the Anhar guidebook, the fee was 1 dinar from every hundred, and not just 1 - from the entire amount. Then they found our Samir, communicated only in English, for some reason in the Jordanian club the Russian language is not held in high esteem…

We moved to Petra already in the dark, probably. Therefore, the journey took 2, not 3 hours. When we drove up to Petra, the stars had already poured out and, in combination with cat phones on the road, it was a breathtaking sight. In the morning we went to Petra. From the entrance of the hotel to the entrance to the reserve about three minutes. A ticket for one day now costs 21 dinars. We were very lucky with the weather - it was partly cloudy and the temperature was about 12-14 degrees. Therefore, “in the cold” we went all the way to the Monastery, though we didn’t climb the Mount of Sacrifice, but with my broken legs it’s forgivable.

Beauty, of course, is unprecedented, incomparable, bewitching, justifying everything. Bedouin children and wives are friendly, chirping in English, not very annoying, which cannot be said about dzhigits on horseback and donkeys. We visited both museums. The exhibits are few, but interesting. In the old museum, they signed up in the visitor's book, on the previous three sheets, there were no Russian surnames, probably out of season. And in the new museum, on the mountain, they were very friendly received by the old caretaker, who gave him tea and showed amazing views, and introduced him to his house, which is located there, on the mountain in three caves - he sleeps in one, in the other - eats, and the third - a toilet. There is also a nice little garden, a few palm trees. It's funny ... On the way back, when they said goodbye to the pink Treasury, they stood with their backs to those entering from the gorge for the first time into ancient city Nabateans to Peter, and all the time we hear with aspiration "May Goth", "Mon Dieu". Indeed - "Oh my God!". Beauty to be seen!!!

The next day in the morning we left for Aqaba, the road was beautiful, near Petra (in fact, now the town is called Wadi Mouss) there are many observation platforms, well and wisely equipped. After some time, we reached the multi-colored desert of Wami Ram, transferred to a jeep (only the two of us and the Bedouin driver) and for two hours did not particularly circle around the sands, which are really lilac, and pink, and yellow, and orange, and even gently green. Photographed some strange cave drawings- something like arthropod shepherds.

Well, here is the sea! Hooray!!! But it wasn't there. In general, it is warm - up to 28 degrees air, 20-22 degrees water, but the wind is something. Plus, one more frustration - the corals on the beach are cut off, real thickets are somewhere in the area of \u200b\u200bthe port and the royal diving club. After the start of the high season - from March 14, yachts went there every day, 15 dinars a trip. Once we tried not to bring back the masks and fins without wearing them, we had zero impressions. The corals are inanimate, there are few fish, and there is still a lot of garbage - bags, tins, a lot of cigarette butts, etc. Interestingly, the Jordanians themselves litter. With us on the yacht were Austrians, French and Arabs, after dinner the Jordanians threw all the garbage overboard. Why is unclear. By the way, they smoke a lot, everywhere and everything, even aunts in hijabs (Muslim headscarves) and pregnant women (and this is every second Jordanian). That is, it is IMPOSSIBLE to rest on the Red Sea, as in Egypt. For divers, of course, interesting places- a tank and a sunken ship, but the beauty of the sea, which we gazed at in Sharm, no, no and no.

For reference, some of what is different from the information in the guidebook.
Ticket to the local museum and fortress - 1 dinar, there is also a nice but expensive souvenir shop.
Ticket to the aquarium - 2 dinars for non-Jordanians, for a round-trip trip, with waiting on the spot and transportation to the border with Saudi Arabia- 15 dinars.
There is no construction near Radisson SAS new hotel and the beach (very decent) for city hotels.
After the ruins of Ayla, they built the Gate Way entertainment center with a mass of shops, restaurants, cafes for every taste and price, as well as a cinema with a Jordanian show like Disneyland attractions, showing the history of Jordan from a bird's eye view and the feeling that you are flying on a carpet- airplane. It costs 6 dinars.
The most affordable restaurant in terms of prices is Captain (street behind Movenpick), good fish restaurants- Floka and Ali Baba. You can find everything without difficulty the very next day after arrival.
As for the free economic zone in Aqaba, we can say that the prices for alcohol at the Amman airport are 3-5 dinars lower. So it's better to buy in duty free on departure. It cannot be denied that this store with a rich assortment, low prices(in Moscow prices for the same goods are in euros) and convenient location.

Yes, we still need to tell how we left Aqaba for Amman. We did not have this transfer. We ourselves bought tickets at the JETT bus station (a room right next to Movenpick without any sign) the day before departure, flights at 7-00, 9-00 and 11-00, then two more in the afternoon, no evening. The ticket costs 4.30 dinars. The buses are comfortable, the ride takes 4 hours, but without any tension at all. When they came a little earlier to confirm their tickets, Valeria's song sounded at the station. She asked who loves Russian songs so much, since Russian speech is not heard, it turned out that one of the young charming employees studied in Kharkov and his wife is Ukrainian. He tried to help us as much as he could, although in general help was not needed. In Amman, they managed to go only to the Citadel - ancient center ancient Roman city of Philadelphia. Interesting, exciting and impressive scope ancient empire. In the well-preserved amphitheater on March 27, the international theater festival began, which must be great.

In conclusion, I would like to wish everyone good and exciting vacation in Jordan, but only and exclusively entering excursion program. And to swim, dive, take sunbaths, admire the underwater world, you need to go to more suitable places for this.
