Information about the object Republic of Altai, Chemalsky district, s. Askat

The Blue Lakes are three water-beaten lakes that appeared about 25 thousand years ago. They are located on the left bank of the Katun, four to five kilometers from the village of Askat. The name of the lakes was given for the unusual color of the water: on a sunny day they are stunning blue. Local Altaians believe that the water of these lakes is healing, and eye diseases can be treated with it.

The blue lakes are unstable (they disappear during the flood of the Katun), they are formed as a result of a drop in the water level in the Katun River.
In winter, the lakes do not freeze over, the water temperature in them is 9 degrees Celsius. Unusually powerful springs beat at the bottom of the lakes. No warm springs, the keys are cold! But they give so much water that the lakes do not give in even to forty-degree frosts. In summer, you can’t see the lake, the dirty Katun will flow here, therefore, only in autumn and winter (usually from September to April).
The total area of the lakes is about 400 square meters, the depth reaches 17 meters.

The "blue lakes" near the village of Askat, which do not freeze in any frost, can only be seen in winter. In summer, the Katun seethes in this place.

But only late autumn the level of the Katun falls, and the water continues to slowly run along the coast about 2 kilometers below Anos. The lakes themselves are discovered already in winter, when snow falls, when the Katun is ice-bound, and the lakes are not covered with ice. Then you can reach these lakes from Askat, and at the end of winter, when the ice is well strengthened, and from the right bank of the Katun. We saw a path on the ice across the Katun, but we did not want to check whether we would get to the right bank along it. The lakes are separated from the main riverbed by an island that the Katun never floods, and enterprising locals put a bath here. People traditionally swim in the lakes, because the bathhouse on the lakeshore is steadily popular, and the price is tolerable - 300 rubles from the nose (this was the case this winter, 2012).

If it were not for Kolya Chepokov (better known as Tarakai), then we would not have seen these lakes at all. They are not widely known. And then he wanted to meet with his comrades in Askat, we had a free day - and we decided to give up on my old seven to Askat.

There are 2 lakes themselves. The first is the closest one from Askat and from the shore of the Katun channel (near the shore it is very shallow, with absolutely clear water, and the second is much larger and deeper, why water it is really blue). I was completely smitten by the little birds that dived into the nearby lake, and quickly ran along the bottom. Kolya said that they were dippers. The first lake is approximately oval, 70 meters long and 40 meters wide. And the second is of irregular shape, almost divided into two, and people bathe in the second bay. We didn't risk it.

Well, the imagination is amazing, of course. Frost, temperatures under 20 below zero, and - lakes, dippers, bathing people, steam over blue water.

Excursion to the Blue Lakes:

This is one of the most amazing and exclusive excursions in Altai. There are two ways to get to the Blue Lakes: either drive through the village of Askat, or from the Berel camp site, cross to the other side of the Katun on motor boat or by means of an alloy. The peculiarity of this excursion is that it is not always possible to see the Blue Lakes (the so-called "eyes of the Katun"), they open only when the water in the Katun subsides. This occurs in autumn, less often - at the end of summer. But you can see them even in winter, the lakes do not freeze. In winter, the lakes can be reached by ice from the camp site Berel to the opposite bank of the Katun.

Blue lakes in the Altai Mountains are called a real miracle and the “Eyes of the Katun”. Both of these names are correct, because to find another natural object such amazing beauty– is simply impossible. Hidden in the virgin taiga massif and surrounded by eternal gray rocks, they give rise to fairy tales and beautiful legends.

According to one of them, the lord of the Altai Mountains presented the most beautiful eyes in the world of his only daughter Katun, so that she can enjoy the beauty of these places. But after the daughter disobeyed her father, falling in love with a mortal, he turned her into a river, and her wonderful eyes into Blue Lakes.

Unfortunately, you can admire the beauty of these water reservoirs only in autumn. winter period, because during the "high water" they are completely covered by the muddy water of the Katun River, rushing in a stormy stream from the very heart of the mountains. But those who are lucky enough to see them from September to March will be amazed by their aquamarine hue and transparency - the water is so clear that it resembles real crystal, which reflects the sky, shimmering under the rays of the cold sun.

"Eyes of Katun" is not in vain considered unique natural object, since their number varies from 2 to 3 lakes and depends on the height of the water in the Katun River. The water level in the lakes themselves is always stable (maximum - 17 meters), because they are filled with underground springs. This explains the fact that even in frosts they are not covered with a crust of ice, but retain their natural temperature within + 7 ° С ... + 8 С.
