Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE)

The Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE) is working in the southern polar region - Antarctica, which includes the continent of Antarctica and adjacent to it South ocean. These hard-to-reach areas, in some seasons of the year, are practically cut off from the main base of the expedition, are characterized by the most severe natural conditions on Earth and are associated with increased danger for RAE participants, lack of comfort in life and a long separation from the family. Therefore, when carrying out work in Antarctica, strict observance of labor and production discipline, a clear organization of labor, a readiness to overcome adversity and deprivation, and an increased sense of responsibility for the performance of the assigned work are required.

Work in the RAE is organized by the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in accordance with the Decree of the President Russian Federation N 824 of August 7, 1992 and is regulated by the annual resolutions of the Government of the Russian Federation and other regulatory documents. The employee is enrolled in the RAE for the period of work in the expedition, determined by the Administration. The next RAE is sent annually (the beginning of the formation of candidates for the RAE at the end of May - June) for the planned period: wintering composition - 1 year, seasonal composition - 6 months, excluding the time of delivery of the worker to the Antarctic and back. The selection of candidates for enrollment in the RAE and their dispatch to Antarctica takes place from October to March. The actual time spent in Antarctica can vary within several months, depending on the schedule of the movement of ships and aircraft, the time of arrival of replacement workers (during continuous work), as well as force majeure.

January 5, 2016 marks the 60th anniversary of the landing of the first Soviet Antarctic scientific expedition on the coast of Antarctica.

Since the mid-1950s, Soviet research has gained wide scope in connection with the preparation and holding of the International Geophysical Year.

On July 13, 1955, the Council of Ministers of the USSR issued a resolution on the organization of the Integrated Antarctic Expedition (CAE) of the USSR Academy of Sciences. Her tasks included organizing the main base on the coast of the continent and choosing a site for inland research stations.

Integrated antarctic expedition The Academy of Sciences of the USSR consisted of two parts - continental and marine. In total, 425 people participated in the expedition (together with the crews of the ships), of which 92 people remained for the winter, the seasonal composition included 83 people, the marine part of the expedition - 48 people, the ship crews - 202 people.

Mikhail Mikhailovich Somov (03/25/1908 - 12/30/1973)

The expedition was led by Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Hero Soviet Union Mikhail Somov he was leading her mainland. The deputy head of the expedition for scientific work was a doctor of geographical sciences Vladimir Kort, who simultaneously led the marine part of the expedition.

The flagship of the Antarctic expedition was the diesel-electric ship "Ob", specially re-equipped for the expedition vessel. Captain of the flagship of the expedition and at the same time acting deputy head of the First Integrated Antarctic Expedition for maritime operations Ivan Man was appointed.

The diesel-electric ship left the Kaliningrad port on its maiden voyage on November 30, 1955. And on January 5, 1956, he approached the shores of Antarctica, and Soviet people first landed on the Antarctic continent. It was a group of expedition members led by professors Alexander Gusev and Peter Shumsky.

February 13, 1956 was raised State flag USSR, and the opening of the first Soviet Antarctic station, called Mirny, took place. The station and the observatory located on its territory were named after one of the sailing sloops that took part in the first Russian Antarctic expedition, which discovered the sixth continent, under the command of Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. This emphasized the continuity in the exploration of Antarctica.

In a relatively short period of time, not only residential buildings were built in Mirny, designed to provide the expedition members who remained at the station with everything necessary, but also special magnetic, seismic and aerological pavilions, geophysical, geological, glaciological, aerial photogrammetric, aerological, gravimetric and other laboratories , a radio station that maintained direct contact with Moscow.

Until 1971, this station was the main base of the Soviet Antarctic expeditions. One of its main tasks was to ensure the functioning of the station "Vostok", located in the depths of the mainland.

Also participating in the expedition were the Lena diesel-electric ship under the command of Captain Alexander Vetrov and the refrigerator ship No. 7, headed by Captain Mikhail Tsygankov. On these ships, 8345 tons of various cargoes were delivered to Antarctica.

In addition, for aerial photography and aerial reconnaissance on the mainland, the expedition had four ski and wheeled aircraft and two MI-4 helicopters. The head of the flight squad was Hero of the Soviet Union Ivan Cherevichny.

The first Soviet Antarctic expedition in 1956 discovered and mapped the Ob passage in the Davis Sea.

In addition to creating the main scientific and material base of the expedition - the Mirny geophysical observatory - the First Soviet Integrated Antarctic Expedition (CAE) achieved significant results.

A general geographical, geological, geophysical, glaciological and biological survey of the coast of Antarctica with a length of about two thousand kilometers was carried out, accompanied by aeromagnetic survey and aerial photography. A number of reconnaissance flights were carried out along the coast to the east and west of Mirny, as well as deep into the mainland. At the same time, in particular, the oases of Bunger, Grierson and Vestfold were examined, the area of the South geomagnetic Pole and the approaches to the Pole were examined. relative inaccessibility Antarctica, which gave the first ideas about these areas.

The first Soviet Antarctic expedition carried out the first sledge-tractor trip deep into the mainland at a distance of 375 kilometers from Mirny to an altitude of 2700 meters above sea level. The campaign was attended by 11 people under the leadership of the head of the expedition, Mikhail Somov.

The participants of the campaign carried out meteorological, astronomical and actinometric observations throughout the entire journey. On the basis of a sledge-caterpillar train in end point route, the first Soviet inland station "Pionerskaya" was created. On May 27, 1956, it took place official opening. The first shift of polar explorers of four people was headed by Professor Alexander Gusev. The creation of the Pionerskaya station was the first step towards the organization of Soviet scientific research in the depths of the continent under the program of the International Geophysical Year.

On October 15, 1956, in the central part of the Bunger oasis, at a distance of 370 kilometers from Mirny, a stationary meteorological station called "Oasis". Peter Tselishchev became her boss.

For a more detailed study of the hydrometeorological regime in the Mirny area in the period from July 31 to August 3, 1956, 4 temporary remote stations (VVS) were organized along the 93rd meridian, where meteorological and glaciological observations were carried out. One of them was led by geologist Pavel Voronov. In August, geographer and geomorphologist Andrey Kapitsa made seismoacoustic measurements of ice thickness using explosions.

The marine expedition on the diesel-electric ship "Ob" carried out comprehensive oceanographic research in the coastal regions of East Antarctica.

As a result of work in coastal region the error of the depths indicated on previously published maps for most of the route and the incorrectness of drawing the coastal contour of the Knox Coast and the Sabrina Coast were established. In the Mirny area, 25 new islands and rocks were put on the map.

The work carried out from the ships marked the beginning of an extensive hydrographic survey of the coast of the icy continent.

Shortly after the completion of the work of the First Soviet Antarctic Expedition, "Proceedings of the SAE" began to be published, since 1958 the "Information Bulletin of the SAE" began to appear, and the collection "Problems of the Arctic" was called "Problems of the Arctic and Antarctic".

Since 1959, the AEC has become known as the Soviet Antarctic Expedition (SAE), and since August 7, 1992, in accordance with the decree of the President of the Russian Federation Boris Yeltsin - the Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE).
