Hua Hin: Sam Roi Yot Park and Phraya Nakhon Cave. Khao sam yot park in thailand

In my opinion, Khao Sam Roi Yot is one of the most interesting national parks in Thailand. There are also caves and beautiful beaches, and a viewpoint, and mangroves, and a swamp with lotuses. And the best thing is that everything is pretty close by, you can go around in 1-2 days, depending on whether you want to see all the caves or not. It is they who take most of the time, because they are not near the road.

On the other side of this national park instead of waiting for an atmosphere of untouchedness and conservation. It's located right next to the shore. Gulf of Thailand and very close to Hua Hin a (south of it). This does not mean that there are straight crowds of people, it’s just that I personally have wild places the north of Thailand is more associated, there are mountains and therefore it is somehow very easy to breathe.

Let's start with the very first attraction of the Praya Nakhon cave, in fact, for which people mainly go to this national park. This is a cave with a large hole instead of a ceiling, and inside which stands a small temple. In the morning it is illuminated by the sun and at this moment it is very beautiful there.

Everyone can visit the cave, getting here is not difficult. But get ready for the climb. This cave and ways to get to it are covered in detail.

Wat Bang Pu temple cave

This temple and cave are not objects of the Sam Roi Yot National Park (most likely), as well as a subject of increased interest among tourists, but you can still look here. It is located very close to the parking lot, where you leave your car/bike to visit Phraya Nakhon Cave, you will drive past this temple.

Another cave, or rather two. The first one is literally a 10-minute walk (uphill) from the parking lot, and the second one takes 30 or more minutes to walk. I only looked at the first one. The cave is ordinary, that is, the one we are used to, cramped, with passages, without huge holes in the ceiling. There is nothing to do there without a flashlight, take it with you. I didn’t have it, I shone with my phone, so I didn’t go far, but there is where to go.

Yes, keep in mind that the first cave is easy to slip through, it is located to the right of the main path, about 10 meters. Since the entrance is down underground, it is not very visible from afar. Therefore, when you go, look for branches from the main path ... True, the path is stone, it is not easy to see.

Sai Cave

It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the cave from the parking lot. I didn't go, it was hot :) But you can go. Even on the way to the Praya Nakhon cave, which I wrote about at the very beginning, there will be a sign to Sai Cave (on the other hand, it turns out), but you should not walk along that path. There is almost no path, and it is very far to go.

Khao Daeng Viewpoint

This is a must-see if you like views. You can go both in the morning and in the evening. Only the view will be different: sunset / dawn, and the mountain on which the viewpoint creates a significant shadow in the evening, maybe it will interfere with you. In general, locals advise walking in the morning, and I was in the evening.

There will be a sign on the road, between the Visitor Center and the turn to the Khao Daeng River Canal. You drive a little from the highway to the parking lot (200 meters) and then you will climb over the stones and through the jungle. Almost anyone can get up, the main thing is to look under your feet. In fast mode, climb for 15-20 minutes, in slow mode 30. There will be a sign at the top, you won’t pass by.

Khao Daeng River Canal

By river channel usually take a tour right there on the spot. In fact, this is just an hour-long walk, the boat will take you first in one direction along the river, then in the other. Recommended to ride at sunset.

Temple Wat Khao Daeng

The temple is quite ordinary, but you can see. It is located right next to the river channel.

mangroves

Spent half an hour before I found them, somehow not obviously located and there are no signs. Perhaps they are not supposed to be visited in view of the shabby walkways. You go and all the time you think, and whether this or that plank will fail under you. And I don’t advise you to climb the wooden observation tower from where the view opens, it is about to fall apart. By the way, I don’t know how it is in other seasons, but in the month of March, everything is dry and the mangroves are somehow withered. It is better to go to the mangroves in the neighboring area.

The entrance to the platforms is located just behind the National Park Office (Visitor Center).

swamp with lotuses

The place is called Thung Sam Roi Yot (Lotus Swamp) and is located on the other side of the national park, and you need to go here separately from the main Hua Hin - Suratthani highway. I didn’t have enough time for this, and I didn’t really want to in the heat, especially since ideally you need to go at a time when these lotuses are blooming. Like the beginning of April when the wet season starts. The place is unique, it is the largest swamp in Thailand (37 sq. km), and for our convenience, walkways have been laid.

About Visitor Center

In addition to the mangroves, there are a couple of relatively interesting things here. The first is monkeys, which are forbidden to be fed, along the road there are signs warning about a fine. Monkeys, by the way, one day were in large numbers, but the next day I didn’t see a single one, I drove there.

Secondly, next to the office, the road goes straight to the beach. And while you are going to it, you can see herons, as well as Martian landscapes. Sometimes the feeling arose that somewhere not at all in Thailand, although maybe it was my rich imagination that played out. The dried earth reminded me.

On this page:

national park Roy Yot himself is perhaps one of the few noteworthy sights of Hua Hin. It is here that famous cave Phraya Nakhorn Cave with the royal pavilion and many other interesting things that are enough for a couple of days of a leisurely walk.

Sam Roi Yot Nature Reserve is located right in the middle between Hua Hin and the capital of our province, the city of Prachuap Kiri Khan. From both to the borders of the park to go about 50 km. Entrance to the park costs 200 baht, you can freely move around by car.

The park itself is quite large and a visit to all its attractions will not fit in one day. It is better to spend two days exploring it and spend the night somewhere nearby: either right in the park, or on the coast in the nearest bay, Dolphin Bay, so named because of the pink dolphins living in it. There are plenty of hotels and guesthouses.

Here is what you can see in the Sam Roi Yot nature reserve:

Phraya Nakhon Cave

Phraya Nakhon Cave in general is not a cave at all, but a large “two-room” grotto with a hole in the ceiling. However, the grotto is quite picturesque, and besides, it was overshadowed by the visit of King Rama V. In memory of this event, an elegant pavilion was installed in the cave in the 19th century, which became a symbol of the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan. Breaking through the hole in the ceiling in the morning sunlight beautifully illuminates the pavilion. This happens from 8 to 10 in the morning, if I'm not mistaken, we are still unable to come to the cave at such an early hour, so we saw this phenomenon only in the pictures.

Laem Sala beach

A rather steep and long climb leads to the cave, which begins at Laem Sala beach. This beach separates from the parking rocky mountain, which can be bypassed along a narrow steep path or bypassed by sea on a boat for 50 baht per person. The trail and boats originate in fishing village Bang Pu.

Laem Sala beach is quite bountiful and suitable for swimming at the far end where there are no boats. There is a cafe, as well as a national park bungalow where you can spend the night. Very cute and shy wild langurs live on the beach.

I advise you to walk at least one way through the mountain, the views are worth it.

Caves of Sai and Keo (Kaeo Cave, Sai Cave)

In addition to the Phraya Nakhon cave, there are two more in the park. Cave Keo, with large halls and two entrances. And the Sai Cave with sparkling stalactites and stalagmites. And bats, of course.

Viewpoint on Khao Daeng Mountain

The entire Sam Roi Yot National Park is a vertical limestone cliffs sticking out straight from the flat coast. A rocky path leads to the top of one of them. From above, a super-view of the mountains and the coast opens, as well as, by some Thai misunderstanding, the shrimp farms that flooded the entire park.

Wat Daeng Temple and Mangrove River Walk

IN secluded corner park between the rocks is very picturesquely hidden monastery. It has two temples: one is new, all in glitter, and the second is old and dilapidated, but very atmospheric. Macaques jump around the territory, as it should be.

On the river flowing past the temple, a pier is equipped, where everyone is offered boat trips. First, they are taken up the river, they show rocks in the form of crocodiles and crocodiles in the form of huge fat monitor lizards, lazily flopping into the water at the sight of a boat. Then they are taken out to sea.

Swamp Thung Sam Roi Yot

Continuing the theme famous caves, it is impossible to ignore Phraya Nakhon ( Phraya Nakhon) in the province of Prachuap Khiri Khan, which is located 60 kilometers from resort town Hua Hin. Located on the territory of the Sam Roi Yot National Park, the cave is perhaps the most visited attraction of the reserve.

Phraya Nakhon Cave

The name of the national park comes from Khao Sam Roi Yot and translates as "mountain of three hundred peaks", which is quite consistent with the landscape. Limestone hills rise right on the shores of the Gulf of Thailand. The most high point Khao Krachom rises 605 meters above sea level. Between the hills are freshwater swamps and lakes, some of which are used to grow shrimp. The national park contains two sandy beach- Lem Sala and Sam Praya.

It is assumed that the Sam Roi Yot area was first visited by the royal family Rama IV to observe a solar eclipse in 1868. He was interested in astronomy and independently calculated the date and the best place observations. The status of a national park was assigned to these places in 1966.

Phraya Nakhon Cave

Sam Roi Yot National Park boasts diverse landscapes ranging from white sandy beaches with coconut palms and casuarinas, mangroves and ending with magnificent caves, forest paths, freshwater swamps with waterfowl and songbirds. Sam Roi Yot Park perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of typical tourist resorts.

Bang Pu Village

The national park is of interest to ornithologists. More than 300 species of birds have been recorded here, half of which stop on their annual migration route from China, Siberia and Northern Europe to Australia. Some of them spend here the winter months from November to March. The park contains the largest freshwater swamp in Thailand. Part of it is covered with lotuses, and you can see all the beauty while walking along the wooden bridges. There are herons, waders, bitterns, wagtails and other birds in the swamp.

Views from the first pass to Lem Sala beach

From mammals to national park there are palm civets, fishing cats, mongooses, pangolins, serows, spectacled slender-bodied monkeys, crabeater monkeys and slow lorises.

Phraya Nakhon cave and pavilion

For lovers of short trekking and natural beauties You should definitely visit Sam Roi Yot National Park. The magnificent cave of Phraya Nakhon is rightfully considered one of the most mysterious sights of Thailand.

Path to the observation deck

To see the cave, you need to make a short climb through the mountains. The path has two parts. The first part starts from the village of Bang Pu, where you can park. Here you need to pay the entrance to the national park 400 baht. In addition to Phraya Nakhon Cave, this ticket allows you to visit other attractions of the Sam Rot Yot National Park - other caves, viewing platforms and a freshwater swamp covered with lotuses.

Lem Sala beach

In my opinion, walk about a kilometer through Mountain pass, not so difficult, along the way you can enjoy magnificent views beaches, the sea and nearby islets. Take with you drinking water and wear comfortable shoes. On the beach near Bang Pu village and Lem Sala beach you will find a restaurant and small private shops where you can buy water and other drinks.

Bungalows, tents and coconut trees grow on Lem Sala beach

The first pass can be covered on foot for half an hour. You can take a longtail boat to reach Lem Sala beach, bypassing the first ascent. The only inconvenience is that you have to get into the boat after passing through the water, there is no pier here. But in any case, from Lem Sala beach you need to walk about 430 meters up the stone steps, which are sometimes uneven. You can arrange a visit to another cave with the boatman, check this at the pier.

430 meters to Phraya Nakhon Cave

Camping with tents and bungalows is located on Lem Sala Beach. Living conditions are no different from other national parks and are similar to camping in the Similan Islands. If you decide to stay at the camping, don't miss the sunrise, it is extraordinarily beautiful in these places. You can sit for hours on the white sand in the shade of palm trees and casuarina trees, watching the expanse of the sea. If you're lucky, you'll spot a pod of dolphins.

Clamped on three sides among steep limestone cliffs, the entrance to the cave is located 430 meters from Lem Sala beach. Phraya Nakhon Cave was named after Nakhon Sithammaraj, who first discovered it. He was traveling by ship along the east coast of Thailand when a storm came up. Nakhon with his team was forced to land on the shore and take refuge in the mountains. Most likely, the cave was known to the locals much earlier, but this is not such an interesting story.

Pavilion Kuha Karuhat

Phraya Nakhon Cave consists of two halls, both of which are open to sunlight, which gives a special mystical look. Inside the cave, there is an atmosphere of calm and serenity, especially when there are few visitors. In the first hall you will see stalactites and stalagmites. In the middle of the second hall is the famous Kuha Karuhas pavilion. It was built for the arrival of Rama V in 1890 and is now the official symbol of Prachuap Khiri Khan Province. Best time a visit to the cave is early in the morning, when the sun's rays pass through a hole in the ceiling at a special angle.

Another important attraction of Sam Roi Yot National Park is a freshwater swamp covered with lotuses. Songbirds and freshwater birds, amphibians and other animal species live here. You can visit everything on the same ticket as the Phraya Nakhon Cave.

National natural Park Khao Sam Roi Yot (Sam Roi Yot), located in southbound from Hua Hin, is one of the most beautiful excursion places in Thailand. It has been open since 1966. Over several decades, hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world have managed to visit here.

National khao park Sam Roi Yot is part of a vast coastline, wetlands, incredible mountains, mysterious caves, stunning exotic vegetation. Khao Sam Roi Yot has a lot of attractions, including temples, caves, beaches, woodlands and mountains. However, we want to focus on a number of specific places.

mangroves

The main building is located almost in the center of the park; a specially organized hiking trail through the mangrove forest starts directly from it. Its length is small - a little less than a kilometer. Optimal time for a walk through the mangroves, it is considered early morning before dawn (before 9 am) or evening before sunset (after 16:30). During the development of the hiking path, you may be lucky to meet a rare species of crabs, as well as macaques, monitor lizards and langurs. Very rich here animal world. Tourists with children take great pleasure in walking along the footbridges of the mangrove forest. When you reach almost the end of the path, you will reach observation platform in the form of a cozy gazebo. Here you can take a break and slowly look around the quaint mangroves from above.

Sai Cave

It is worth noting that in khao park Sam Roi Yot a large number of mysterious caves. But one of the most attractive in terms of tourism is the Sai Cave. In its bowels you will find incredible natural stalactites growing right from the ceiling. Direct a beam of light from your lantern at them - they will begin to shine and shimmer with all the colors of the rainbow. Your young traveler will certainly be impressed by the young, slender trees that have established their roots at the very bottom of the cave. Sunlight enters small holes, and the trees reach for it with all their crowns.

Swamp Thung Sam Roi Yot

This swamp is the largest in Thailand. Freshwater Thung Sam Roi Yot, well protected by the state, is an optimal habitat for a large number of species of waterfowl and songbirds. Along with fresh water there is also some brackish water in the swamp. There are also specially organized transitional roads, thanks to which you and your child can explore such an interesting area in detail.

Lookout Khao playground Daeng

This site is one of the highlights of Khao Sam Roi Yot. The trail, along which you can climb the mountain, also originates from the main building of the park. You should keep in mind that the climb is quite difficult even for an adult, so we advise you not to take very young children with you.

About three hundred meters you will climb up the rocky path, it will take you at least 30 minutes. However, even despite such a difficult summit, real travelers and fearless adventurers should do it! Having reached the observation deck, you will see the entire park literally at a glance. Breathtaking panoramas of exotic oriental nature will open for you and your child. The main thing is to choose an earlier time of day for lifting and make sure that the air is transparent.

Article text updated: 05/29/2018

The fourth day of our independent travel Thailand in a rented car. And, still, my wife and I did not manage to relax at sea. In the previous part of the review, we learned how to get to one of the most impressive sights, not only in the vicinity Hua city hin (Hua Hin), but the whole of Thailand: to the cave Tham Phraya Nakhon. Today I will open information about how much money we spent on vacation, I will tell about a beach holiday at Hat Laem Sala, about an excursion to the Thung Sam Roi Yot Swamp lotus swamp and show photos of the mangrove forest at the beginning of the trail to the Khao Daeng Viewpoint. All three attractions are located within the Sam Roi Yot National Park.

Holidays at sea in Thailand in February. BeachLaem Sala beach

Even when we climbed the first hill, on the way to the Tham Phraya Nakhon Cave, from the observation deck we admired Hat Laem Sala beach with hungry eyes. Probably cannot be recommended as the best place for beach holiday in the vicinity of the city of Hua Hin, since it is located on the territory of the reserve and you will have to pay for the entrance every day. Again, if you book a bungalow in a beach house, you may not have to spend money on tickets. I do not know for sure…

All photos in today's review were taken on a full-frame Nikon D610 body camera, Nikkor 24-70 / 2.8 lens with a Hoya HD Circular-PL polarizing filter.

The sand here is not snow-white, as on the islands in the Thai province of Krabi (Krabi), but some kind of grayish. Garbage from the beach, apparently, is removed, but it does not look very neat. The fact is that a casuarina grove grows along the coast and trees drop their needles onto the beach.

But to relax on the sea, anyway, very nice. Especially when you consider the fact that we got to the water for the first time in 4 days of traveling around Thailand on our own.

Photo 3. The same thing, but in Thai ... Laem Sala beach (Hat Laem Sala) in Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park. Here we rested after an excursion to Phraya Nakhon cave (ISO 250, FR=24, F=5.6, shutter speed 1/2000 second)

For a long time we splashed in the warm water of the Gulf of Thailand, enjoyed the tropical sun, just sat on the shore, exposing our faces to the fresh breeze, watching the groups of Thais who came to Laem Sala beach to relax after a long week of work.

Walked with a camera under the canopy of casuarinas.

Spying on the tourists who get to Laem beach Sala Beach is not along the path through the top of the hill that separates it from the village of Bang Pu (Bang Pu), but by boat.

Here, of course, no azure sea and the sand of tropical islands blinding like snow. On the other hand, there are almost no tourists. You can forget about everything in the world and enjoy your vacation by the sea.

Under the canopy of trees, several houses hid from the midday sun. You can rent a bungalow and meet the dawn alone.

A couple of hours passed, we decided that it was time to refresh ourselves and move on to the next excursion: I wanted to get to the lotus swamp Thung Sam Roi Yot freshwater marsh by the “golden hour for photography”. I had to go back to the sign for Phraya Nakhon Cave and climb the hill.

Photo 9. Behind this sign is the path to Phraya Nakhon Cave. Excursions around Hua Hin (800, 50, F=8.0, 1/160)

At the parking lot where our rented “swallow” was waiting for us, you can buy souvenirs (we never buy this junk again) and have a delicious meal, amusing the owner of the cafe with the fact that a 39-year-old man climbs onto a chair and photographs the most delicious fish soup in the world.

Review of a trip to the lotus swampThungSam Roi Yotswamp

Before preparing a travel plan for Thailand by car, we still did not find GPS coordinates for the navigator - only a verbal description of the location of Thung Khao Sam Roi Yot. But then they figured out how to get to the school in the village of Rai Kao Village, where they already followed the signs, and stopping and asking for help from local residents(do you know how to explain with signs that I need a swamp?), found the entrance to the national park ticket office.

By the way, I was too lazy to get out of the car in the village of Rai Khao - there is a monastery with two huge black monks, similar to the Great Ushastik in Wat Na Yang, which we saw in the third part of the review.

  7. Tham Kaeo Cave

  9. Nom Sao Island
  10. Rum island
  11. lotus swamp Thung Sam Roi Yot Swamp

As planned, by the time we arrived at the park, the sun began to lean towards the horizon, washing the swamps and mountains with golden rain. We left the car in the parking lot and went to wander along the wooden platforms laid over the water.

The length of the wooden paths is 1.4 kilometers. Let's go, enjoy the scenery, listen to dozens of waterfowl calling in the reed beds.

Here and there there are gazebos with benches. You can stop and feel with every fiber of your being what happiness is.

In Thailand guidebooks, the Thung Sam Roi Yot swamp is positioned as a place for birdwatching - observing waterfowl. But, to be honest, they didn’t really want to let us in. I was able to photograph only pigeons.

Photo 16

This place, as I said, is called the lotus swamp, although we did not see a single flower. Most likely, in the month of February it is not yet the season, I have seen the reports of foreigners, where there are many photographs with soft pink flowers. To imagine how beautiful it must be here, you can see my review of a safari trip in Sri Lanka. There, in the Yala National Park (Yala national park) we photographed an incredibly beautiful lotus swamp. It's a pity the guide didn't let me go down to the shore - crocodiles...

It was already dark when we returned to the Ing-Fah Villa Hotel. We had dinner in a small cafe located 300 meters from the hotel and went to bed. Tomorrow - check out and go to the city of Chumphon (ชุมพร), conquering another mountain on the way.

What can be seen at the beginning of the trail to the Khao Daeng Viewpoint

For my taste, there are three attractions in the Khao Sam Roi Yot Reserve that deserve attention. independent tourists: the most important, of course, Phraya Nakhon Cave, Thung Sam Roi Yot swamps and Observation deck on Mount Khao Daeng Viewpoint.

On the map with the scheme of the reserve, posted above, we see that the ticket office and parking at Khao Daeng Viewpoint are located, again, in a different place. In the morning we threw things in the trunk of our rented car, checked out of the hotel and rushed to the box office of the Sam Roi Yot park. On the way, they "recorded" a bunch of coconut peels.

Photo 18. Someone did a good job… Trip to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park (Nikon D610 body camera, Nikkor 24-70/2.8 lens with Hoya HD Circular-PL polarizer. Settings: ISO 100, FR=24, F=9.0 , shutter speed 1/80 second)

At the national park office, I had to pay 200 baht per tourist again, since tickets are valid for all Sam Roi Yot attractions, but only during the day.

We saw a skeleton, it seems, of a hippopotamus. I do not remember exactly.

Directly behind the ticket offices is an ecological path: boardwalks through mangroves.

In general, in the vicinity of Hua Hin (Hua Hin) there is a separate tourist attraction - the Pranburi mangrove forest. forest park. His GPS coordinates: 12°25′0″N 99°59′03″E. According to reviews Russian tourists, thickets are thicker there and it is more interesting to walk. It seems to me that mangrove bushes are not so interesting to get to them in Pranburi Forest Park, you can limit yourself to those that grow at Daen Viewpoint.

Over the territory of the mangrove forest, observation towers are placed in several places. And, although one of them was closed, this did not stop the desire to admire the park from a height.

The cost of traveling around Thailand by car on your own in February 2015

Due to the fact that the exchange rates this year are behaving inadequately, there seems to be no point in citing the travel budget. On the other hand, when planning a vacation, tourists are painfully looking for information on how much money to take with them on a trip to Thailand. Well, I reveal all the secrets of the budget of our trip in the winter of 2015.

So, on a larger scale, we can single out 10 items of expenses for organizing holidays at sea, in euros:

  • food costs - 467.64;
  • the cost of renting a car -427.03;
  • gasoline expenses - 135.28;
  • prices for excursions - 122.98;
  • buying a SIM card with unlimited internet and cellular communication – 23,2;
  • hotel expenses - 400;
  • other - 79.53;

One of the most costly articles of preparing a trip to Thailand is the cost of air tickets from Yekaterinburg to Moscow and further to Bangkok. There are direct flights from Yekaterinburg to Bangkok, but they are operated by Transaero. At the time of buying plane tickets in December, the price was 96,000 rubles for two round trips. But I, for 5 years, accumulated points under the Aeroflot-Bonus program and paid only airport tax- 554.9 euros.

In the 10th part of our Sri Lanka rental car driving report, we discussed in detail with you how to find and book cheap flights to different countries. At the end of the article there is a link to this report: you can see that prices have now dropped slightly. So, if in April we pay for tickets for a flight with a departure in December, we will spend much less money.

Not happy with the price this year medical insurance. In China and Sri Lanka, the price was miserable: less than 2,000 rubles, it seems. In Mexico, since the level of danger is higher there, we paid 4,800 rubles for two people for insurance coverage of $ 50,000. But the price of the insurance premium is calculated in dollars, so insurance in Thailand for 16 days cost a catastrophically huge amount - 8,570 rubles.

Now, if the total amount of all expenses for organizing a trip to Thailand by car is multiplied not by 79 rubles (at this rate I bought euros before vacation), but by the standard 35 rubles (courses last year or the year before), we will see that the rest in February 2015 turned out to be the most inexpensive: 82'600 rubles. Until now, only a trip by car in Sri Lanka has come out cheaper: 125,036 rubles.

It is understandable: Thailand is very cheap country for travel. If you look at prices not in resorts, where tourists are charged a little more expensive and where you want to buy expensive seafood, in villages and small towns you can eat for 1 or 2 euros per person: salad, rice with meat.

Hotels on our route cost, basically, 600-800 baht per day. At the same time, the quality of the rooms was an order of magnitude higher than in Sri Lanka or China. Imagine, a year and a half ago, you could stay in an excellent hotel for only 800 rubles per night!

Here is a description of the cost of a trip to Thailand in February 2015, broken down by day.

The costs are given so that in the future I no longer have to write prices for excursions and the cost of housing or gasoline in each tourist place. Laziness… Sorry.

Friends often ask an inadequate question: “Is it true that in Thailand everything has risen in price by 2 times in 2015”? Answer: No. Prices have remained the same. The ruble just dropped a lot.”
