Research Center QS Quacquarelli Symonds published the fourteenth edition of the Global University Rankings QS World University Rankings . This year's table is an exhaustive list of 965 top universities peace.

The new rating confirms that Russian universities continue to strengthen their positions, and Project 5-100 continues to bear fruit, almost all program participants have improved their positions. Total Russian universities in the global ranking increased to 24, while the performance of 14 universities increased significantly.

Moscow again became the leader among the domestic higher education State University named after M.V. Lomonosov. In 2010, for the first time, it entered the top 100 best universities in the world, and now it has risen 13 positions to 95th.

The purposefulness of the Russian higher education in increasing its attractiveness to international level relies primarily on the quality of our educational programs and the close connection of our universities with the economic and social needs facing the country. We see certain points of growth and, of course, we will develop our movement forward in the world academic and scientific community, - noted Minister of Education and Science of Russia O.Yu. Vasiliev.

· St. Petersburg State University has moved up 18 positions and currently ranks 240th;

· Novosibirsk State University entered the top 250 for the first time, moving up to 41st position and taking 250th place. It is also the only Russian university that managed to improve its Citation Index in 2017.

· Moscow State Technical University. N.E. Bauman entered the top 300 for the first time, peaking at No. 291;

· Tomsk State University has moved from 377th to 323rd position. This is another outstanding success story - in two years the university has risen by more than 100 positions, not the most simple task within the top 400;

· The Higher School of Economics and Tomsk Polytechnic University entered the top 400, proving that specialized universities can also make significant progress in the global rankings;

· Ural Federal University returned to the top 500 for the first time since 2012;

· RUDN again took positions in the 501-550 group and is the leader among Russian universities in terms of improving the reputation among employers, it also remains the leader in terms of "internationalization of students";

· MEPhI took 373rd place in the ranking, this is their best result for the entire time of participation in the ranking since 2014;

· IN a total of 14 out of 22 Russian universities that were presented in the last year's ranking improved their positions;

· This year, the ranking also includes two new Russian universities: ITMO University (group 601-650) and Samara National Research Universitynamed after Academician S.P. Queen(Group 801-1000). Thus, a total of 24 Russian universities are represented in the QS World University Rankings this year.

QS experts note that Russian universities showed the greatest growth in two of the six indicators used to compile the ranking - this is "reputation among employers" and "the ratio of the proportion of teachers to students." Out of 24 universities, 16 improved their results in the “reputation among employers” category, which indicates that universities produce graduates who are increasingly valued by employers, and that employers are more willing to give feedback and participate in the survey.

The “teacher-to-student ratio” is a conditional indicator of the quality of education. Six Russian universities are included in the top 50 universities in the world according to this indicator. The leading one is Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, which ranks 19th in the world in this indicator.

Ben Sauter, Head of Research QS Intelligence Unit , comments: “The achievements of Russian universities this year indicate that careful, long-term strategic planning, targeted and consistent investment, and the desire for internationalization will ultimately lead to tangible positive changes in the positions of Russian universities in the rankings.

Despite the fact that Russian universities are still hampered by the relatively low results of bibliometric indicators, behind the high results of this year are the desire of Russian universities to strengthen their positions in the international arena and the introduction of an international strategy as an integral part of the development of the university.”

28 Russian universities were included in the QS World University Rankings by Subject at once, which is 11 more than last year. The leader among them was Lomonosov Moscow State University, which hit the top 50 in seven areas at once. This year, for the first time, the study takes into account the success of universities in the subject "theology, theology and religious studies." The Ministry of Education and Science believes that the results of the rating reflect the high level of subject training in the national higher education.

The seventh international subject ranking of universities QS World University Rankings by Subject 2017 presents the results of universities from 74 countries in 46 subjects. This year, for the first time, such areas as anatomy and physiology were added to the study; management in hotel business and the leisure industry; sports and related disciplines; theology, theology and religious studies. Harvard became the world's leading university, ranking first in 15 subjects, followed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - leader in 12 areas.

Lomonosov Moscow State University has achieved record-breaking results for Russia. Moscow University was included in the list of 50 leading universities in the world in seven areas at once: physics and astronomy, mathematics, natural sciences, computer technology and information systems, management in the hotel business and leisure industry, linguistics, modern languages. Positioning itself primarily as a natural-mathematical university, Moscow State University unexpectedly showed the highest results in the humanitarian direction of linguistics, becoming the 13th university in the world. Recall that the rector of Moscow State University Viktor Sadovnichy in January 2017 at a meeting with President Vladimir Putin already reported on the success of the university in international rankings: "This has never happened: the third place in the world, among thousands of universities in the world, Moscow University is the third place." It was about the successful indicators of Moscow State University according to the criterion of "success of graduates", however, Mr. Sadovnichy did not specify at a meeting with the president what kind of rating he was talking about. Later, Moscow State University explained that Viktor Sadovnichy was talking about one of the QS ratings - Graduate Employability Rankings.

The top 50 of the ranking also included the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and Novosibirsk State University (21st and 50th place in the subject "physics and astronomy"). The Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory worsened its performance compared to last year, dropping by 14 lines, but remained among the leading universities in the direction of "theatrical art", taking 41st place. Among the best in the direction of "engineering - mining and mining" were the St. Petersburg Mining Institute (15th place) and NUST MISiS (31st). NUST noted that the university became the only participant in the 5-100 project that was included in the subject rankings in mining and materials science. Rector of NUST MISiS Alevtina Chernikova told Kommersant that the rating "indicated new achievements of the university", and stressed that "the strategic goal of the university is to become one of the key research and educational centers in the specializations: materials science, mining and metallurgy."

QS Regional Director for Eastern Europe And Central Asia Zoya Zaitseva believes that the quantity and quality of representation of Russian universities in QS subject rankings can indeed be partly explained by the implementation of the 5-100 program. Recall that the program was developed by the Ministry of Education and Science to implement the May decree of Russian President Vladimir Putin on the entry of at least five Russian universities into the top 100 leading world rankings by 2020. “It is especially pleasing that such growth is organic for many, and not artificially wound up,” adds Ms. Zaitseva, citing as an example this year the university participating in the program for the first time in the main part of the ITMO ranking.

In addition to the leaders of the standings, the National Research University Higher School of Economics, Kazan Federal University, Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University and Tomsk Polytechnic University were among the most widely represented universities in the ranking. In total, in 2017, 28 Russian universities entered the ranking, taking 146 positions in 46 subjects. Thus, the share of Russian higher education in the ranking increased from 0.82% to 1.03% compared to last year, the authors of the study note. “The new QS World University Rankings by Subject suggests that Russian higher education continues to show remarkable improvements, especially in the sciences,” said Ben Sauter, Head of Research at QS.

“The domestic higher school demonstrates a high level of subject preparation, which is clearly shown by the results of the latest QS ranking, where Russian universities have taken serious steps towards leading positions,” said Olga Vasilyeva, head of the Ministry of Education and Science. “Traditionally, our universities turned out to be strong in physics and astronomy, which is confirmed by the results of the Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology and NGU. High results are shown by Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov, the St. Petersburg Mining Institute also entered the top 15 universities in the world in engineering training. We will continue to promote the active development of our universities, comprehensively focusing on both the internal needs of the regions of Russia and the international student community.”
