Which Russian universities are included in the international QS ranking KXan 36 Daily News

Rating top universities world (QS World University Rankings) - a global study and the ranking of the best higher educational institutions of world importance in terms of their achievements in education and science. Calculated according to the methodology of the British consulting company Quacquarelli Symonds (QS). Considered one of the most influential global university rankings. Developed in 2004 by Quacquarelli Symonds in collaboration with the British edition of Times Higher Education. Until 2010 it was known as The World university rankings. Since 2010, the single ranking has been divided into two: the Times Higher Education publishes the ranking of the best universities in the world together with Thomson Reuters, and Quacquarelli Symonds continues to release a ranking called QS World University Rankings.

The ranking evaluates universities according to the following indicators: the activity and quality of research activities, the opinion of employers and career potential, teaching and internationalization. These indicators cover the key strategic missions of world-class universities, for which they are responsible to the participants in the process: the academic community, employers, students and their parents. Over 2,500 higher education institutions around the world are evaluated annually in the study. Based on its results, a ranking of the 500 best universities in the world is compiled, as well as university rankings in individual disciplines.

The level of achievement of universities is assessed based on the results of a combination of statistical analysis of the activities of educational institutions, audited data (including information on the citation index from the Scopus database, the world's largest bibliometric database of scientific publications), as well as data from a global expert survey of representatives of the international academic community and employers, who express their opinions about universities. Below are the quantitative and qualitative indicators by which the performance of universities is assessed.

Methodology for calculating the QS World University Rankings

Students who are citizens of countries other than the country of study, study for at least one semester and are not exchange students are taken into account. 5%

The survey of representatives of the international academic community (QS Global Academic Survey) involves professors and university leaders with an average tenure in science of 19.6 years. Among them are leading scientists and rectors of more than 500 universities. The respondent can name up to 30 universities, without naming the university in which he serves. The survey is conducted in five subject areas: natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and arts, life sciences, engineering sciences and technologies. Several thousand companies from over 90 countries take part in the QS Global Employer Survey. A description of the methodology for selecting experts, a complete breakdown of respondents by country, position and industry is presented on the project website based on the results of another comparative study.

The compilers of the ranking emphasize that the volatility of the top 100 universities in the QS World University Rankings is noticeably lower than in most other similar rankings, which reflects the maturity and reliability of the methodology used. QS is a member of the Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence (IREG), the regulatory body for higher education ranking organizations. The authors of the project indicate that the QS research team works as objectively as possible, all data and rating methodology are available for external audit.

The ranking methodology has undergone minor changes this year. Zoya Zaitseva commented: “Firstly, the ratio of the weights of the votes of domestic and international employers has changed. Previously, it was 30/70, from this year the weight will be equal, 50/50. This is a major plus for Russian universities who are finally working much more intensively with their contacts in the companies.”

In addition, the analysis of the Scopus database has changed. “Before, we considered a five-year window, exciting quotes from the year the rating was published,” explains Zaitseva. - However, after lengthy discussions with our Academic Council, it was decided to expand the window to six years. So, this year we analyzed 2011-2016 citations referring to articles published between 2011 and 2015. It enhances the importance last year in the analysis and gives us slightly more accurate data.”

Experts from Quacquarelli Symonds claim that the competent planning of the activities of Russian universities, aimed at improving their reputation, certainly helped them rise in the rankings. “The achievements of Russian universities this year indicate that careful, long-term strategic planning, purposeful and consistent investments, and the desire for internationalization will ultimately lead to tangible positive changes in the positions of Russian universities in the rankings. Despite the fact that Russian universities are still hampered by the relatively low results of bibliometric indicators, behind the high results of this year are the desire of Russian universities to strengthen their positions in the international arena and the implementation of an international strategy as an integral part of the development of the university,” said Ben Sauter, Head of the Department research QS Intelligence Unit.
