Landmarks of Langkawi: cable car and sky bridge (Sky Bridge) in Oriental Village park. "Sky Bridge" on the island of Langkawi - a dizzying sight of Malaysia

There is truly on earth heavenly corners, such as the island of Langkawi located off the northwestern coast of Malaysia. Nature has rewarded this place with everything you need for relaxation: the azure sea, sandy beaches, lush tropical vegetation, mild climate. Contributed to all this and man. In order to enjoy the surrounding beauty to the fullest, a pedestrian bridge was built, called " sky bridge Langkawi" (Langkawi Sky Bridge).

The heavenly bridge is thrown over the gorge and connects the two peaks of Mount Gunung. It has a curved shape so that you can admire the surrounding scenery from different angles, and a very interesting way to support it. The entire weight of the bridge falls on 8 cables attached to a single support. That is, in fact, it is suspended over the abyss, due to the lack of any support from below, a complete illusion is created that the bridge is hovering over it. And on windy days, this illusion is even stronger.

Further, I would like to describe this bridge in numbers, but here the problems begin. There are a lot of references to this structure, but there is very little information about it, and even that one varies greatly. The bridge is 125 meters long and 1.8 meters wide. Located at an altitude of 652 or 687 or 700 meters above sea level (everywhere the information is different). But the gorge directly under the bridge is not that big. The length of the steel support that supports it is only 87 meters. The Sky Bridge was put into operation either at the end of 2004 or at the beginning of 2005 (again, in different sources - different dates).
I would very much like to find information about how much this bridge weighs, how much the construction cost, how it was installed there. If someone can help and give a link to such a source, I will be very grateful.
Below, as always, are a few photos, including artistically processed ones.

The method of climbing the Sky Bridge deserves special mention. cable car. It consists of two sections with a total length of 2.2 kilometers. First, you climb from the Oriental Village to the first observation deck.

The island of Langkawi, located off the northwest coast of Malaysia, is beautiful place, here green a tropical forest, sandy beaches, azure sea, there is everything for great holiday. And in order for tourists to enjoy all this beauty even better, at an altitude of 700 meters above the gorge between the Ganung Mountains, a tall and unusual Sky Bridge (Langkawi Sky Bridge) was built, which goes to heaven, it offers a fabulous view of the island.

Sky Bridge was built in 2004 and has been open to the public since 2005 and is the tallest single-support bridge in the world. The whole bridge really rests on just one high, metal support. The weight of the bridge is distributed over 8 cables attached to this single support. That is, it is actually suspended over the abyss, and on windy days it is most noticeably felt.

Although the bridge does not seem very reliable, safety was still in the first place when designing the bridge, so you don’t have to worry that something will fail and the bridge will fall, it is very well thought out and completely safe for people. Even during bad weather, in order to protect people from lightning, evacuation routes are provided on the Langkawi Sky Bridge. Also installed on the upper level are double steel railings, wire mesh and wood decking below the parapet level.

The bridge is 125 meters long and 1.8 meters wide and connects the two peaks of the Gunung Mountains. Along the edges of the bridge are triangular platforms, like stops where you can stop and enjoy the wonderful view of the island, the Andaman Sea and neighboring islands With larger area and let your feet rest. Since the bridge is curved, you can admire the amazing landscapes from different angles.

Langkawi Sky Bridge is one of the strangest suspension bridges in the world and its construction did not take place in the usual way. All parts of the bridge were first lifted to the top of the mountain by helicopter, and then on the spot it was assembled and secured with ropes.

Special mention deserves the method of climbing the Sky Bridge, this is a cable car. It consists of two sections with a total length of 2.2 kilometers. First, you rise from the village of Oriental Village, which is located at the foot of Machincang Mountain, to the first observation deck. Then, from the first observation deck to the second, located directly next to the bridge. The ascent takes about 20 minutes.

You don't have to have wings to feel like you're floating above the ground. A cable-stayed winding structure, thrown over a gorge among the mountains of Ganung, covered with green forests. It seems that the bridge goes straight to heaven!

Soaring over the abyss Langkawi Bridge

The Langkawi archipelago of the same name is located in the strait between the Adaman and South Korean seas. The area is mountainous and coastline cut into small bays. In 2004, on one of the islands, construction began on the amazing Langkawi Sky Bridge at an altitude of 700 meters above the picturesque gorge in order to attract tourists to this exotic corner of Malaysia.

Main Feature The sky bridge is its design. At first glance, it seems that it is rather unstable, because it has a single support, and the rest of the weight is held by eight strong steel cables attached to it. This creates the feeling that a weightless bridge literally hangs over an abyss. Tourists who come here experience similar feelings.

But the apparent fragility is an illusion. The bridge is securely fixed and meets all modern safety standards. When designing it, all the details were thought out, so nothing threatens visitors to this picturesque place. The structure is able to withstand even a tropical storm with large gusts of wind, and in case of a thunderstorm, a plan is provided for the rapid evacuation of tourists from the bridge. On the upper level there are fences with double railings made of strong steel and wire nets, and a wooden flooring has been built under the parapet.

Walk over the island

To get to the Sky Bridge, there is only one way - to climb the cable car, built here specifically to serve tourists. It consists of two parts: first, travelers rise to small village Oriental Village, which is located at the foot of Machincang Mountain. Here is the first observation deck, and from here you can get to the second platform, built at the very base of the bridge. Total time the ascent is 20-25 minutes, excluding stops to view the surroundings.

Then the walk itself along the Heavenly Bridge begins. Its width is only 1.8 meters, and the total length is 125 meters. Triangular platforms are built on the side of the bridge, where you can take memorable photos, enjoy the beauty of exotic nature and relax. From here opens beautiful scenery to the green archipelago of Langkawi, its picturesque coastline and the azure of the Adaman Sea. The tortuous bridge design provides good review and the feeling of weightlessness over the gorge, which is breathtaking.

Sky Bridge on Langavi is amazing architectural structure, created so that tourists can fully enjoy amazing beauty nature of Malaysia. The illusion of weightlessness of the bridge causes a lot of pleasant impressions and a feeling of freedom.

For 500 million years, the mountain lived quietly on the island of Langkawi ... But in 2005, the quiet and measured life of the mountain came to an end. Between two peaks at an altitude of 652.5 m above sea level, a miracle bridge “hung” over the gorge, reaching into the heavens. The Langkawi Sky Bridge is one of the tallest single-bearing bridges in the world. The amazing design of this footbridge rests only on a single column. IN good weather opens from the bridge great view on the Andaman Sea with islands, green rainforests and mountains.

Let's take a look at this famous building more...

After visiting Georgetown, we are in tourist office at the pier we bought tickets to the island of Langkawi, where we planned (and still plan) to spend 5 days. Ferry prices are not at all cheap and the ticket price is clearly higher than in Thailand:
Adult - MYR 65.50 one way and MYR 128 round trip;
Child (from 3 to 13 years old) - 48.60 MYR and 92.20 MYR roundtrip;
Infants (up to 3 years old) - 28.60
MYR and 57.20 respectively.

Ferries depart in the morning at 8:15 and 8:30, but it is better to take the second one, because the first visits another island and gets a little longer. Drive about 3 hours. The ferry itself is quite modern, but the condo works there in earnest. If you plan to sit inside, then it is better to prepare warm clothes, because. even I, who seem to be calmly enduring the cold, ended up sitting there in one T-shirt.

Having sailed to the island, we were met by an eagle, majestically towering at the Langkawi pier.
(later, I will add a video to the report, for now, the speed of the Internet leaves much to be desired)

The height of the statue is 18 meters and those who wish can visit it right with their suitcases, immediately after disembarking from the ferry, as we did, not wanting to pay greedy taxi drivers - the prices for this service are astronomical.

For those who, like me, have never heard of this before. interesting island, I advise you to read his brief legend:
“There is an island of bad luck in the ocean” - 20 years ago, these words could have described Langkawi. One of the most important resorts in Malaysia until the mid-1980s was a very dull sight. One after another, misfortunes fell upon the once picturesque piece of land in the Andaman Sea: the Siamese went to war against it, drought replaced floods, hunger and disease also did not pass by. The legend says that fortune turned its face away from Langkawi for a reason. At the beginning of the 19th century, the greatest of injustices happened here ...

Young Mansuri was famous for her beauty. Her unusually white skin for these places caused delight in men and strong envy in women. Rumors about the charmer also reached the leader of the local Dato Seri Karma Jaya tribe. Without thinking twice, he married the girl to his younger brother Darus. For a long time the wedding sang and danced, but it was short-lived Honeymoon. Military duty sent now not a boy, but a husband to repel the attacks of the warlike Siamese. Mansuri sorted through the rice and shed tears, waiting for her lover. A wandering poet caught her doing this. The poet asked the young maiden for shelter, read his verses to her until late and begged her to leave him for the night. And in the morning, the wife of the leader Mandor announced the fall of her daughter-in-law.

No matter how Mansuri swore fidelity to her husband, no one believed her. Female adultery in those days was punished death penalty. And now the envious, from young to old, began to throw stones at the unfortunate woman - but they did not cause her the slightest harm. The amazed men of the tribe, wishing to complete what they had begun, plunged a curved dagger, the kris, into the heart of the maiden. White blood streamed down the blade, symbolizing innocence. Before she breathed her last, Mansuri cursed the island for seven generations. You may not believe it, but the inhabitants of Langkawi tested the power of her words on themselves. As if from a spoiled cornucopia, all sorts of troubles and misfortunes rained down on them. And in 1986, in the former Siam, and now Thailand, on the island of Phuket, a girl Aisha was born - the heiress of Mansuri in the seventh generation. And the very next year, Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mahathiru Mohammed, the famous reformer, declared the island a place of duty-free shopping. And in twenty-one years it has become a world center of tourism, prestigious resort, a favorite point for tourists on the world map. Taken from here.

Nearby is the park "Legends of Langkawi", which tells about the history of the island, as well as other mythological components. However, we decided to postpone our visit and slowly rolled the suitcase towards the hotel. Our hotel was located in the city of Kuah, which is one and a half kilometers from the pier. The road is pleasant, there is even hiking trail, along which we walked under the indifferent gaze of taxi drivers. It's nice that they respect the choice of tourists and do not bother with their persistent services. Already used to constant moving and the heaviness of our bags, the distance that we had to overcome, we went quickly enough and practically without getting tired. After checking into the hotel, we set off to explore the island.

Langkawi is a duty-free island and, at first, going to the next store duty free you feel like you are at the airport. And the prices make you get your wallet faster and buy, buy and buy ... :) For example - 6 cans of Heineken 0.5 liters. here it costs about 15 MYR, when in Georgetown 1 bottle of the same beer costs 11.50 MYR. I won't say anything about prices for other alcohol, imported chocolates and perfumes... There are a lot of shops and everywhere the prices are slightly different from each other. There are also restaurants, but the prices are also not at all budgetary - for us, who are used to paying 60-80 baht per dish, Malaysian prices still seem wild. :) We accidentally stumbled upon the Domino restaurant, where the food is amazingly delicious. I've probably never eaten more delicious chicken and pasta in my life. Prices, although high, are normal for this island.

Park "Legends of Langkawi"
The next day we headed towards Eagle Square, where we planned to explore the park in more detail and delve into its history.

One of the legends says that a long time ago giant birds lived on the island.

I don’t know any more legends and I suggest just looking at the photos of the park:

And here, it seems, the story of Mansula and her rebirth is told, but I'm not sure)

The park is very beautiful.

From the height of this structure:

If you take the time to visit it, you won't regret it. Moreover, the entrance to its territory is free. From the coast you can take a picture against the backdrop of an eagle.

By the way - another legend of Langkawi can be attributed to the mythical local public bus, which is mentioned in many reports. More precisely, it is mentioned that no one saw him. I can swear that I saw stops with people sitting there, I saw buses passing by, where I saw several locals, but the locals themselves categorically deny this (there are no Russian troops in Donetsk) and offer to travel by taxi. Because I have not seen at least one bus stop at a bus stop and passengers disembark and alight from it, then I can neither refute nor confirm this myth. For us it remains a mystery...

sky bridge ( Langkawi Sky Bridge

Come to Langkawi and not visit this amazing bridge can be considered the crime of the century. Therefore, getting up early, having breakfast with some cookies and drinking this white coffee (special Malaysian coffee brewed from special varieties of coffee), we headed to the villainous taxi drivers. We read a lot (and saw for ourselves) that taxis here are very expensive and no matter how you bargain with taxi drivers, they will not drop the price, but will only show you the prices for their services on a poster on the wall. I suggest you check them out too.

Together with us on the ferry there were a couple of tourists who carried bicycles with them. Perhaps someone will be interested in this way of moving, because. the prices for renting bicycles on the island are also not cheap.

Gritting our hearts, we gave the unfortunate 40 MYR to the taxi driver and headed towards the bridge. One could try to negotiate with other tourists to share the cost of the trip, but there are very few of them in Kuah and it is very difficult to meet them on the street. What you should not do is to succumb to the persuasion of a taxi driver so that he waits in the parking lot while you inspect the bridge. Our taxi driver did not suggest this to us, but some reports read that taxi drivers abuse it. In fact, there are a lot of taxi drivers there and you can choose any one you like, anyway, the price will be the same for everyone.

We left at 8:30 in the morning and after 40 minutes were in place. Bridge lift and observation decks located on the territory of the Oriental Village, where you can see fish, rabbits and, of course, buy lift tickets.

Now the prices for lifts are as follows:

It is better to come here either to the very opening, or to dinner. We bought tickets around 9:30 and there were already a lot of people. When we went down, there were even more people, and the queue became 3 times longer. Those who value their time can pay twice the price and buy an express lift. Before the ascent, tourists are offered to "ride" on the Martian roller coaster in a panoramic room very similar to a planetarium. The entire ceiling is a huge screen, looking at which you feel the full effect of immersion, and when the trolley turns, the brain urgently requires the body to obey the laws of gravity and physics. And as for the sensations that arise when the trolley is lifted up and when it begins to descend at a wild speed, I will not say anything - you have to see and feel it yourself! I saw both 4D and 5D (poor Moscow and more advanced Thai), but this "trip" was the most exciting and spectacular. I don’t even know how many D can be assigned to her. I think 10)

After, again, waiting in line, this time to board the lift cabin. Before we got into the booth, we stood for about an hour (including the 15-minute "rolling"). Someone wrote that it was 2 hours, but I don't think that even this is the limit. There are really a lot of people.

INSERT VIDEO

There are two platforms at the top and the views from both were amazing. Below are panoramic photos, when you click on the photo in full size.

And this is a view from the other side, already on the border with Thailand.

To my great regret, the sky bridge was closed for restoration. I found information about this after visiting him. Someone wrote that a tourist fell off the bridge a few years ago and it was closed. That the bridge has been closed for three years and only plans to open it again in February 2015. My disappointment knew no bounds, and only the views from the review somehow covered it. The bridge looks like this now and it was possible to photograph it only from the lift cabin:

Side view:

Briefly about what makes it so amazing and unique:
The Langkawi Sky Bridge is located at an altitude of 700 meters above sea level. Incredibly, with a length of more than a hundred meters, the bridge rests on just one tall column, to which it is attached with cables. It is precisely this support that causes the feeling of fear, since it is not located vertically, but noticeably deviated to the side. Thanks to this, it seems that the bridge is floating in the air.

Unforgettable impression Sky Bridge causes in cloudy weather. At this time, an illusion is created, as if the bridge goes into the sky.
Sky Bridge was built in 2004 and has been open to the public since 2005 and is the tallest single-support bridge in the world. The weight of the bridge is distributed over 8 cables attached to this single support. That is, it is actually suspended over the abyss, and on windy days it is most noticeably felt.

The bridge is 125 meters long and 1.8 meters wide and connects the two peaks of the Gunung Mountains. Along the edges of the bridge are triangular platforms where you can stop and enjoy a wonderful view of the island, the Andaman Sea and neighboring islands. Since the bridge is curved, you can admire the amazing landscapes from different angles. Langkawi Sky Bridge is one of the strangest suspension bridges in the world and its construction took place in an unusual way. All parts of the bridge were first lifted to the top of the mountain by helicopter, and then on the spot it was assembled and secured with ropes.

In general, without setting foot on this engineering structure, we went downstairs and went to the next attraction, which is very close - the Seven Wells waterfall.

Waterfall "Seven wells" (Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls aka Seven Wells)
The waterfall is located a kilometer from the cable car, and we went there on foot. The stomach was already starting to tentatively remind that breakfast with cookies was good, but it was already 1 o'clock in the afternoon and it would be nice to have a bite to eat something more serious. We agreed with him that after visiting the waterfall we would immediately go to the hotel and there we would go "refuel" with a delicious dinner at Domino.

Entrance to the territory of the waterfall is free and to get to it, you need to overcome a rather steep climb to the top. View of the bottom of the waterfall.

To climb to the upper part, you need to climb another 367 steps up, which the sign warns about in advance.

What will 367 unfortunate steps do to those who? That's right, nothing, and in a few minutes we were at the top of the waterfall.

And this is what the waterfall looks like from above:

Walking around the perimeter of the waterfall, I saw a path on my own and Christina's head, which invites those who wish to reach the top. There was no more information, only an arrow pointing towards the jungle. I don’t know why it hooked me so much, but taking the struggling Christina in an armful, we went on reconnaissance. The stomach again reminded of the contract, but I reassured him, and after looking just a little bit, we will return and have a delicious meal.

The trail was quite comfortable, and we went deeper and deeper. Seeing that we had gone deep into the jungle, another couple of tourists followed them, who stopped after 400 meters and decided to turn back. We walked further and, seeing a man coming to meet us, we decided to clarify what awaits us ahead. He said that it was not very far to go ahead, but there was only the top of the mountain and nothing more. It seemed strange to me, well, shouldn’t there be such a trodden path, with carved steps and signs, and leading to nowhere? Reaching the end of the road has already become a sporting interest, and Christina was clearly unhappy with this desire of mine. Having decided with her that we would go a little more and turn back, we went on.

The road led everything forward, Christina had already resigned herself to the fact that we would still reach the end, and the map on the phone showed that there was very little left before reaching the end of the path. The only strange thing was that all the main sights of the world were marked on the map, there were even marks about the shelters that were built along this path, where you can sit and take a breath, but at the end of the path there were no marks, and the road was simply interrupted. This did not bother me at all either, and deciding to ourselves that there was still something there, we continued to make our way through the jungle. Starting from the middle of the path, there were no more tourists coming to meet us, and even another couple, which overtook us on a quarter of the way, returned back without reaching the mysterious peak.

Almost at the very end, a rope appeared in front of us and a steep climb up. The climb was really difficult, and I suggested that the tired Christina stay downstairs until I scouted out what was ahead. Having overcome the last 30 meters with the help of a rope, I found exactly what the man told us about. :))) Namely, a sign informing you that you are at an altitude of 1736 meters. The path, however, did not end there and continued to lead further, but I had already decided not to find out where it led - at such a pace it was possible to reach opposite side islands.

When I returned, I saw Christina, accompanied by a couple of tourists, who overtook us and turned back. The guy convinced his companion, and they still decided to check what was at the end. I honestly answered them what was waiting for them and, having decided not to even go upstairs, they turned around disappointed and left. My interest was satisfied and I went after them under the condemning look of Christina. :)

Having caught taxi drivers at the rise to the waterfall, we returned back for the same price. The stomach was angry at that, with what it was so cruelly deceived and by 4 o’clock they had not been fed and was already about to arrange revolutions. Having changed in anticipation of a delicious dinner, we hurried to the restaurant. It is impossible to put into words the degree of desperation we felt when we saw that Domino and all other restaurant establishments were closed. After all, it is Sunday in the yard, which means that here, as in Thailand, most shops and cafes do not work. We have already stepped on a rake three times in Thailand and this has not taught us anything.)
