Landmarks of Langkawi: cable car and sky bridge (Sky Bridge) in Oriental Village park. Sky Bridge Langkawi. Malaysia

For 500 million years, the mountain lived quietly on the island of Langkawi ... But in 2005, the quiet and measured life of the mountain came to an end. Between two peaks at an altitude of 652.5 m above sea level, a miracle bridge “hung” over the gorge, reaching into the heavens. The Langkawi Sky Bridge is one of the tallest single-bearing bridges in the world. The amazing design of this footbridge rests on just one single column. IN good weather opens from the bridge great view on the Andaman Sea with islands, green rainforests and mountains.

Let's take a look at this famous building more...

The island of Langkawi, off the northwest coast of Malaysia, is beautiful place, here green a tropical forest, sandy beaches, azure sea, there is everything for great holiday. And in order for tourists to enjoy all this beauty even better, at an altitude of 700 meters above the gorge between the Ganung Mountains, a tall and unusual Sky Bridge (Langkawi Sky Bridge) was built, which goes to heaven, it offers a fabulous view of the island.

Sky Bridge was built in 2004 and has been open to the public since 2005 and is the tallest single-support bridge in the world. The whole bridge really rests on just one high, metal support. The weight of the bridge is distributed over 8 cables attached to this single support. That is, it is actually suspended over the abyss, and on windy days it is most noticeably felt.

Although the bridge does not seem very reliable, safety was still in the first place when designing the bridge, so you don’t have to worry that something will fail and the bridge will fall, it is very well thought out and completely safe for people. Even during bad weather, in order to protect people from lightning, evacuation routes are provided on the Langkawi Sky Bridge. Also installed on the upper level are double steel railings, wire mesh and wood decking below the parapet level.

The bridge is 125 meters long and 1.8 meters wide and connects the two peaks of the Gunung Mountains. Along the edges of the bridge are triangular platforms, like stops where you can stop and enjoy the wonderful view of the island, the Andaman Sea and neighboring islands With larger area and let your feet rest. Since the bridge is curved, you can admire the amazing landscapes from different angles.

Langkawi Sky Bridge is among the strange suspension bridges in the world and its construction did not take place in the usual way. All parts of the bridge were first lifted to the top of the mountain by helicopter, and then on the spot it was assembled and secured with ropes.

The method of climbing the Sky Bridge deserves special mention. cable car. It consists of two sections with a total length of 2.2 kilometers. First you rise from the village Oriental Village, which is located at the foot of Mount Machincang to the first observation deck. Then, from the first observation deck to the second, located directly next to the bridge. The ascent takes about 20 minutes

Langkawi Bridge in Malaysia is unique, as it rests on one support and is suspended high above the abyss. Along the edges of the bridge are triangular platforms where you can relax and also enjoy the beauty of nature. Since the bridge is curved, you can admire the amazing landscapes from different angles.

You might think that the bridge is not stable, but it is safe. 8 strong cables are fixed on the rocks, which stabilize the bridge. Being on the bridge, you feel safe, as double steel railings are built along the edges of the bridge along its entire length. But still, the bridge is dangerous during a thunderstorm, so for a while bad weather the entrance to the bridge is closed for tourists, but if a thunderstorm suddenly starts, evacuation routes are provided.

langkawi bridge considered one of the highest, so for example in cloudy weather the bridge is in the clouds, it seems as if you are in the sky. The bridge over the gorge is impressive and a walk along it will leave unusual and pleasant memories.

Asia never ceases to amaze with its incredible symbiosis cultural traditions and high-tech advances. Speaking of unique creations of this region, one of the masterpieces of architectural art immediately comes to mind - the Petronas Towers, but this time we will talk not about them. On the island of Langkawi there is an opportunity to rise to heaven, a pedestrian single-pole cable-stayed bridge Sky Bridge, located on the Malaysian island of Langkawi, known as the "Sky Bridge", will lift you into the thick of the clouds. It is called heavenly precisely because it seems to be floating in the air above the lush tropical greenery of the island of Langkawi, and in wet weather the canvas of the bridge is hidden by foggy clouds, and it seems that the bridge soars into the sky and is lost there.

A bit of history

Until the end of 2004, in this region of the Malaysian island of Langkawi there were only lush thickets and virgin tropical jungle. And already in 2005, over the gorge between the peaks of Mount Gangun Mat Chinchang, a beautiful miracle bridge “hovered”, “going to heaven”. According to legends, this mountain is about 500 million years old and is a real natural guardian of these places. Its construction was as unusual as the creative idea of the bridge itself, all its parts were first lifted by helicopter to the top of the mountain, and there they were already assembled into a single structure and fastened with ropes. Therefore, not only the bridge began to be included in the rating of the strangest bridges in the world. Although the history of the building does not span many years and centuries, like other historical bridges described in this collection, the uniqueness of this bridge is undeniable.

bridge structure

Langkawi Sky Bridge strikes the imagination at its very sight, and if you are on one of its spans, you can really feel the feeling of weightlessness, floating above the ground. The total length of the bridge is 125 m, and the width is 1.8 m. The entire mass of the bridge deck rests on 8 cables, which are attached to a single support - the column.

It is precisely because of the absence of other supports that the illusion is created that the bridge is suspended above the ground and is not fixed at all. Local panoramic views are mesmerizing to the point of dizziness; in clear weather, incredible views of the azure Adaman Sea and densely overgrown Thai islands open from the observation terraces of the bridge. Comfortable viewing platforms are installed along the edges of the bridge, which also serve as recreation areas.

Although at first glance it may seem that the bridge is poorly fixed, it is quite safe. For the emotional comfort of visitors to the bridge, every detail is provided. Steel double railings on the upper span of the bridge, as well as mesh partitions and timber below the parapet, doubling the sense of security.

But in bad weather it is dangerous to be on the bridge, the steel structure of the bridge is vulnerable to lightning strikes, in this case, evacuation routes are provided for pedestrians, along which you can quickly and safely leave the bridge.

It is worth mentioning separately the cable car, which lifts visitors to the bridge to the top of the mountain. The total length of the ropeway is 2.5 kilometers.

The ascent is carried out in two stages, starts from the small colorful village of Oriental Village, lying at the foot of Mount Machincang (Machincang), near Pantai Kok beach on the island of Langkawi in the Kedah archipelago, takes a total of 20 minutes. First stop at the observation deck in the middle of the bridge. The second stage of the lift delivers passengers to the very top of the mountain, where the second observation deck and, accordingly, the bridge itself are located.

The cable car leading to the bridge is closed for maintenance every month. Now the bridge is also closed for major reconstruction, there are plans to open another observation deck. When exactly the bridge will be open to visitors is not yet known. So we just have to wait.

Undoubtedly, the bridge is an incredible accomplishment, a victory of engineering over natural grandeur.

What to see

To begin with, it is worth mentioning the Oriental Village itself, from which the ascent to the bridge starts. Entrance here through a cable suspension bridge, absolutely free. What is a village? Yes, the most natural shopping mall, consisting of 30-40 detached stalls, made in the old Malaysian style. In each of them you can find a wide variety of souvenirs, clothing stores, a lot of handicrafts by local craftsmen, even a fish spa - Fish Spa, in general, everything your heart desires.

Here you can take a small extreme excursion in the form of riding an elephant, with a walk to the nearest reservoir and bathing an elephant. But we warn you, this outlandish pleasure is not cheap - it costs almost $ 100.

In the direction of the bridge a few kilometers from the Oriental Village is crocodile farm, Crocodile Adventureland or Crocodile Farm, where you can see these beautiful predators in their native environment. Entrance to the farm costs 20 RM per person.

And of course, Pantai Cenang Beach is attractive, here you can stroll along the foamy water's edge, admiring the splendor of the day passing beyond the horizon.

A perfect ending to our virtual travel to the island of Langkawi to one of the dizzying, literally, sights of the island and all of Malaysia.

SkyCab and SkyBridge are without a doubt the most interesting place islands. In general, the island is famous for its beaches, duty-free zone and resort atmosphere. But here the cable car to the 708-meter mountain and the sky bridge will be remembered by us forever.

Arriving at the foot of the mountain, you need to buy tickets for a certain time. Depending on the number of applicants, you can wait from an hour to two. We spent the waiting time on entertainment: a 5-D Sky Rex attraction (included in the price of our combo ticket), feeding fish in a local pond and looking at numerous souvenir shops.

Water mini-entertainment for those who are bored while waiting

Would you like some fried durian?

Another suspension bridge in preparation for the Sky Bridge

Map of the cable car and the surrounding area:

Also included in the price of our ticket was the Sky Dome attraction: it's something incredible! Sitting in the chair we took a ride on roller coaster, is it possible! At the entrance to the attraction hangs an impressive announcement forbidding to dirty the hall (apparently, there were precedents):

Here is a piece of video of this attraction, then my head was spinning for a long time:

The trees below look like broccoli:

By the way, another sight of Langkawi is clearly visible from the window of the cable car cabin - the waterfall of 7 wells. But we didn’t go there, because in the dry season it is a few lean streams, here it is:

The first observation deck, after it we will go even higher:

Second observation deck, 360 degree view! You can see almost the entire island: most of it is a tropical forest untouched by civilization.

The highest observation deck with a gorgeous view

View of the observation deck from the Sky Bridge

We were lucky, and the day of our visit turned out to be cloudless, thanks to which we could see all this beauty. And it happens that it is not visible because of the clouds, it would be a shame!

It is said that from this height you can see the coast of Thailand (in the north), and the outlines of Indonesia (in the southwest). For those who want to see it all, the floor of the observation deck is decorated with cardinal points. We did not set such a goal, so we just admired the views:

From the second observation deck you can see the main goal of our visit to the mountain - the sky bridge (Sky Bridge).

Only from above you can truly appreciate it: it rests on only 1 support (which itself is not clear how it holds) and 8 cables! It feels like it's really hanging in the air:

on this piece of iron, it is not clear how it is stuck into the rock, and the entire bridge is held!

The length of the Sky Bridge is 125 meters, and it can withstand up to 200 people at the same time! The bridge was built in just 12 months, and the cost of the entire construction was quite small - $ 1.2 million.

Interesting fact: the bridge was assembled in advance, after which it was lifted to the top section by section by Russian helicopters design office KAMOV.

There are windows down on the bridge, but they are so dirty that you can hardly see anything through them, sorry!

But the idea is good

You can buy a lock engraved with your names and leave a part of yourself here forever.

Having admired this view, you can go down and walk along this unrealistic bridge. By the way, the entrance to it is paid additionally: 5 ringgit ($1.2) for those who stomp to it on foot along a steep mountain path through the jungle (not for long, 10 minutes) and 15 ringgit ($3.6) for those who do not want or cannot make this hike (then the SkyGlide funicular will take you to the bridge and back). By the way, the funicular opened only in December 2015, before that everyone walked and did not complain!

Elevator for lazy tourists: the trip lasts only 2 minutes

Of course, we chose the first option, it’s interesting to walk along the mountain!

Warning on the way to the bridge: snakes, wild boars and monkeys are waiting for us!

Hooray! We are on the bridge! He is very strong, reliable, we were definitely not afraid for our lives. Swings a little with gusts of wind, but not critical.

The cost of visiting the cable car and sky bridge

Prices on the right - for Malays, on the left - for tourists (clickable)

We chose the basic package ( 45 ringgit or $11 adult and 32 ringgit or $7.7 child ticket), and not just a lift, and we don’t regret it: while you are waiting for your time to get up, there is absolutely nothing to do, and 5-D rides were by the way.

Entrance to the sky bridge is additionally paid - 5 ringgit adult ($1.2) And 3 ringgits ($0.7) children's ticket (provided that you will go down to the bridge and climb back on foot) and 15 and 10 ringgit ($2.4 and $3.6) respectively, if you want an elevator to take you both ways.

What else you can visit in the "base camp" SkyCab:

  • 3D Art Museum
  • Water attractions on the lake
  • Formula 1 simulator
  • 6D Cinema
  • sky adventure park
  • Rent bikes with giant tires, electric bikes and smart cars
  • shopping

It’s good to go down, but it’s more difficult to go up, at the end of the path everyone looks something like this

Where is it located and how to get to Cable Car and Sky Bridge

The cable car is located about 20 km from the most popular tourist beach, Cenang. By the way, you can even see the mountain and 2 observation decks from the beach itself.

Cable car and viewing platforms on the map:

There are 3 ways to get here, as to all other attractions of Langkawi:

  1. On the bike. Rent price - 30 ringgit ($7.2) in a day. But very often tourists are stopped and fined for 150 ringgit ($36) for the absence international law category, A, so we did not take risks and used the following method:
  2. By taxi. From Cenang and Tengah beach to get to the mountain will cost 30 ringgit ($7.2) one way. The price tag is fixed, you can't bargain.
  3. Rent a car with a driver. The cost of 4 hours of rent - 120 ringgit ($28). Every extra hour- more 25 ringgit ($6). It's pretty convenient way to see the island, but if you go by cable car, it will be unprofitable: in line, waiting and viewing the island from a bird's eye view should be laid down for at least 4 hours.

Opening hours of the complex: from 9:00 to 19:00. Often the cable car is closed for unscheduled work, so it’s better to check the schedule in advance on their website.

In the Strait of Malacca, washing the western border of Malaysia, is the island of Langkawi, which is part of the archipelago of the same name. It is famous not only for its tropical location, but mostly for its suspension bridge. It is officially called the Langkawi Sky Bridge. It is located in the western part of the island, 1900 meters from the sea coast.

Sky Bridge Langkawi on the map

  • Geographic coordinates (6.386670, 99.662076)
  • The distance from the capital of Malaysia, the city of Kuala Lumpur, is about 440 km in a straight line
  • To the nearest International Airport Langkawi about 10 km (the airport is located on the same island east of the bridge)

Any respectable tourist likes unusual places. It's just that palm trees and jungles hardly surprise anyone. So the workers of the tourism industry are trying to lure the capricious traveler. In the same Malaysia, Canopy Suspension Bridges have already been built, passing in literally by the trees. But on the island of Langkawi they went further. In order to attract tourists to the island, the authorities decided to build something that would allow picky travelers to pay close attention to this region. As a result, in 2004 a unique and incredible bridge. It was erected in the mountains of Gunung Machinchang (in the original Gunung Machinchang). The only arched span of the bridge hangs on one, the same single support.

It looks like a support of the Heavenly Bridge

Building Langkawi Bridge

Engineers and designers have done their best. The bridge is really amazing. It must be said right away that the Heavenly Bridge does not lead anywhere and does not connect anything, it simply hangs over an abyss at a height of 100 meters above the ground. Its length is 125 meters. extreme points lie on mountain peaks, but the only span in the form of an arc is suspended in the air on one pylon 82 meters high. 8 strong and reliable steel ropes depart from the pylon, which keep the entire structure suspended. The pylon itself is inclined at an angle of 78o and is supported by two powerful cables. The width of the bridge is only 1.8 meters, but it can hold up to 250 people at the same time. Altitude Sky Bridge Langkawi 660 meters above sea level.

It is not given to a person to fly, but this design allows you to feel like you are in flight. This is the feeling you will have during the walk, no doubt. Sometimes, during fogs, the bridge literally soars in the sky; it is not for nothing that it is called Heavenly.

At the ends of the bridge there are triangular viewing platforms where you can take several (pieces, tens, hundreds - underline as necessary) photos for memory. In the center of the bridge, there are two small sections with a transparent floor. The faint of heart should not look down.

And if you like such views, and the soul does not seek to take a place in the heels, then be sure to visit or at least read about the Hero's Bridge in China. This is a bridge whose floor is made entirely of glass. Why Hero's Bridge? Yes, because only heroes can overcome it.

Despite the external airiness and lightness of the Heavenly Bridge, its design is very well thought out, reliable and meets the highest safety requirements. But the bridge can pose a threat during a thunderstorm, as the probability of being hit by lightning is quite high. During thunderstorms, access to the bridge is closed.

How to get to Sky Bridge

To get to the Langkawi Sky Bridge, you first need to get to the island. Then come to the village of Oriental Village (in the original Oriental Village). Here begins the path directly to the bridge. With the help of funiculars passing through two viewing platforms, and an inclined elevator, you get to the southern end of the bridge. Then go on foot across the bridge to the northern one, admiring the views and clicking cameras along the way.

Interesting facts about Langkawi Sky Bridge

  • The bridge takes first place in the category "The longest free span and curved bridge in the world"
  • The path from the last funicular platform to the Sky Bridge can be overcome either using an inclined elevator (SkyGlide), or by making walking tour along the path
  • The bridge was built within 12 months between August 2003 and August 2004. It was opened to the public in February 2005.
  • $1.2 million was spent on the construction of the Sky Bridge
  • The bridge structures were delivered to the construction site using Russian Kamov helicopters
  • From July 2012 to February 2015 the bridge was closed for reconstruction
