How to get from Prague to Sychrov Castle on your own. Medieval gothic castle Sychrov

Sychrov Castle is a corner of France in the Czech Republic. Sychrov was never military fortress. In 1690-1693. the French nobleman Lamotte d "Frintropp is building a noble estate with a turret and a chapel in the late Baroque style. For the next 150 years, the estate did not change its appearance and passed from one hand to another.

In 1820, Sikhrov bought for 650,000 gold coins an Austrian vice-marshal of French origin - Carl Alail Gabriel Rogan. Rogans were originally from Brittany, where the first mention of them can be found as early as 951. The Rogan family was one of the ten most influential noble families in France and was related to the French kings. Most of the representatives of the family occupied important political, ecclesiastical and military positions. After the Great French Bourgeois Revolution, the Rogans had to leave France, but unlike their other compatriots who fled, they did not return to their homeland later, but remained in the Czech Republic, which at that time was part of the great Austro-Hungarian Empire.

So Sychrov became the main refuge of a famous family. But the appearance did not allow the dilapidated estate to become the official residence of eminent dukes and princes. Therefore, Karl Alail Gabriel Rogan carried out the first reconstruction of the castle, which was completed in 1834.

Modern Neo-Gothic appearance Sikhrov acquired under his other master - the prince Philippe Rogan (full name Kamil Josef Idesbald Philip Rogan). Philip Rogan entrusted all the work exclusively to local craftsmen and artisans. Among them special place occupied Petr Bushek- a carver who dedicated his life to Sikhrov. With his creativity and rare talent, he gave the interior of the castle not only an incomparable atmosphere, but also a high artistic value. It is thanks to his unique work that Sychrov Castle is called "carved miracle" of the Czech Republic. In addition to Busek, other outstanding masters also participated in the work on the castle - sculptors Emmanuel Max and Vincenz Smolik, upholsterer Ludwig Grein, glass and ceramics painter Jan Zachary Quast, carpenter Petr König, blacksmith Jan Nowak.

Like any Czech castle Sychrov has his own legend. And even your ghost. This Black Lady(or Black Bertha) - Bertha Rogan Daughter of Charles Alain Rogan.

It is believed that it is she who appears in the castle as a ghost and is its keeper. You cannot envy the fate of this woman - she literally sacrificed her life to her family. Berta was the only child in the family, and so that the lineage would not be interrupted in the male line, she was married to her father's younger brother. The marriage was unhappy. Berta loved children very much, but she was able to give birth to an heir only at the age of 40. Unfortunately, the boy died just six months later. The inconsolable princess went mad with grief. After that, Berta wore mourning for the rest of her life - another 27 unhappy years. And in order to continue the line of the "Czech" Rogans, the couple adopted her husband's nephews. The eldest of them - Camille Rogan - later became the owner of the castle. Berta's death is shrouded in mystery - the princess was found in the morning with a dagger in her stomach. It is not known whether it was a suicide, or someone helped Bertha to leave for another world, because. she became unbearable in her old age. After her death, Princess Berta - the Black Lady began to appear frequently in the premises of the eastern wing of the castle. They say that doors open and close on their own here, suddenly it blows cold, knocks and sighs are heard, someone wanders around the castle, carries candles along the corridors, knocks on the windows. And the Black Lady always returns to its place things that someone has shifted or rearranged.

I visited Sychrov in August 2010 and April 2013 and both times different people, working in the castle, told not only about the rumors and legends associated with the ghost of the unfortunate Bertha, but also about their meetings with her. So, for example, she appeared to one woman in the mirror when she went around checking the room before closing the castle for the night. Another girl claims that several times she found the candlestick rearranged by her in the same place.
Who knows, maybe the ghost of the Black Lady really exists? But no matter how much I looked at Bertha's portrait and in the mirrors, unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), I did not see her. Although in the castle itself, either because of the impression made by the legend, or in fact, someone's invisible presence was felt.

The era of the Rogans at Sychrov Castle ended in 1945, when the castle was nationalized by decree of President Beneš. Until now, the castle remains state-owned, but members of the Rogan family often visit Sychrov as their family estate.

In the castle you can admire the works of P. Buschek and the collection of French portraiture, which is considered the largest in central Europe and has 242 exhibits. The portraits are dominated by images of the French nobility and legendary figures known to us from childhood from the books of Alexandre Dumas: Madame de Chevreuse, Madame de la Mote, Philippe d'Orleans, as well as representatives of the French Bourbon dynasty. Also of no less interest is the castle library, which contains more than 7 thousand volumes, including 9 manuscripts and valuable books printed before 1800.

In addition, you should pay attention to the collection of watches, weapons, porcelain figurines, sets of copper and pewter utensils, a collection of Venetian glass. Sychrov attracts not only with its inner chambers, but also with its English-style castle park, to which Special attention Prince Kamil Rogan.

Sychrov Castle is known not only to all lovers of the mysterious and mysterious, but also to all music lovers. Sychrov was very fond of the great Czech composer Antonin Dvorak. There is a museum named after him, and an organ competition named after him is held annually in the castle chapel. We were able to listen to the Sychrov organ because our tour began with a wonderful 25-minute organ concert in the castle chapel.

One of the magnificent castles in the Czech Republic that attracts attention is Sychrov Castle - the youngest of all Czech castles, which does not make it any less unique. But Sykhrov is one of the most enigmatic and mysterious. It is located a hundred kilometers from Prague and is truly considered the pearl of the North Bohemian region.

Many castles in the Czech Republic used to be military fortresses, but Sychrov has never been like that. It was built in 1690-1693 by the French nobleman Lamottu d'Frintroppu in the late Baroque style, but in a couple of years the estate changed many owners. As a result, the castle again returned to the French, it was bought by the Duke of Montbazon, and it was to his family that the castle of Sychrov belonged until 1945.

The castle looks very beautiful due to the large use of wood in its interior; it is not for nothing that it is often called the “carved fairy tale of the Czech Republic”. The wall panels and beautifully carved ceilings were made by craftsman Piotr Busek, who devoted almost all the years of his life to decorating the castle.

Of course, this castle is not without legend. According to one of them, huge treasures are hidden in the basement of the castle. And these jewels are guarded by the "black lady" - a woman in a black widow's attire, who is often seen here at night. They say that the lady really does not like it when things are shifted from place to place in the castle, and if any items are changed, then in the morning they will again be put in their original place. Recently, it has become fashionable to hold weddings at night in the castle, the newlyweds want to see a black lady and thereby tickle their nerves.

Also, this castle is very popular with music lovers, as the famous Czech composer Antonin Dvorak was a frequent guest here, and there is a museum named after him in the castle. In addition, in castle complex there is a small chapel.

Inside the castle there is a unique library that contains more than one and a half thousand books of the 16th-17th centuries, as well as 9 rarest old handwritten books. There is also a portrait gallery, consisting of 242 exhibits, most of which consists of portraits of the family and close relatives of the former owners of Sychrov Castle, dating back to the 16th century.
Unique and antique furniture castle, which is considered one of the best in the whole of the Czech Republic. There is a luxurious abundance of carved wood, which is found not only in furniture, but also on ceilings and walls.

Even greater beauty of the Sychrov castle is betrayed by the magnificent english park that is around it. In a word, it is better to see this castle live than to hear or read about it a hundred times.

How to get to Sychrov Castle.

By bus from the Cerny Most station to the city of Turnov or from the Main Station or Holesovice Station by train. The bus is faster - about two hours, by train about three hours.

Next, from the station, where the bus and train arrive, take another bus to Sychrov. The road there will take about 15 minutes. The bus from Trunov to Sykhrov departs at 11 am. The next one will be at 2pm.

About the castle

Sychrov Castle is located 100 km from Prague, it is called the pearl of the picturesque North Bohemian region. This castle is shrouded in mystery and legends about ghosts and belongs to one of the most significant historical buildings in the Czech Republic. It was in this castle that the children's film "Three Nuts for Cinderella" was filmed in 1972.

Story

The history of the place where the castle is located dates back to the 15th century. At that time there was a fort, which was the property of the Czech royal chamber. In its place in the 16th century there was a stone manor, built in 1690 - 1693 in the Baroque style, built by the knight Lamotte d "Frynthropp. In 1740, the estate was bought by Frantisek from Wallenstein. For almost eighty years the building was used for agricultural purposes and to accommodate employees The situation changed radically on August 30, 1820, when Duke Carl Alain Gabriel Rogan became the new owner of Sychrov.Sychrov, however, did not meet the requirements for the residence of dukes and princes, being a dilapidated baroque castle. Duke Carl Alain Gabriel Rohan initiated the restoration (completed in 1834) The reconstruction of the castle, however, continued by Prince Philip Rohan, thanks to whom Sychrov had a neo-Gothic style. fine arts Bernard Gruber, in the 19th century Sychrov becomes the most important monument of historical styles. All works were exclusively entrusted to domestic artists and craftsmen. The turn of the 20-30s of the 20th century brought certain alterations to the castle, which not only partially changed the appearance of the building, but also its interiors. Many rooms were decorated with rich carvings, French embossed wallpapers made of pigskin. The neo-gothic furniture was replaced with new, modern furniture.

After World War II, the castle was confiscated in 1945. under the Beneš decree. Now it belongs to the state. Initially, acting as a collection point for confiscated property, from May 1, 1950 it became available to the public. During the 70s, the tours were extended to the east wing and the corridor in the south wing of the castle of the Antonin Dvořák Museum. Since the beginning of the nineties, a major overhaul and restoration of the exterior, interior and park has been carried out.

English park

The original Neo-Gothic castle was rebuilt in the Baroque style in 1840, when the Rohan family settled here. Duke Camille Rohan was an avid botanist and collector and focused all his interest on the park, amassing rich dendrological and botanical collections. He created new park, building it on three main axes of space that extend from the front of the castle park. A unique path, along which pyramidal oaks stretch, goes beyond the gate and reaches the tower of the church. On the right side there is an arboretum with now non-existent greenhouses. Here is a rich collection of rare plant species, especially many varieties of oaks and beeches. Currently, the dendrological collection of the state is being updated, professional tree care is being carried out, as well as the gradual replacement of old and the addition of new trees on the oak alley.

Brief description of the buildings located in the park

Water tower

Cylindrical shape of bare stone walls. From the outside, it consists of three floors. The first floor with massive stone slabs is divided by horizontal stripes. Entrance is possible by stairs, the railings of which are decorated with two huge balls. The ground floor has box arches. The roof is conical, with a lantern in the center. This tower was built in 1891 according to the design of F. Vordren. It was an integral part of the castle's water supply system. At the top of the tower there is a huge reservoir for water, which was supplied from the river and further distributed throughout the park.

Greenhouse
The greenhouse is the dominant architectural form of the park. The style of this building does not fit into the Gothic character of Sychrov's buildings, as it was built in the style of the Italian Renaissance. It was designed by Joseph Prouvot and approved by Duke Kamil Rohan in 1852.

Arthur's castle
Completes the Park in the northwest. Arthur's castle can be described as an artificial ruin. It is still in question when exactly this building was built, since it was already on the cadastral map from 1843 to 1868. His modern look was designed by Josef Prouvot in 1876. Previously, however, this building was called "Alte Burg" (Old Castle). Arthur's castle today consists of two cylindrical towers, which are connected by a wall with a gate in the form of a Tudor arch. The northeast tower is wider and lower than its counterpart. The entrances to the towers are in the form of pointed arches.

stone pump
This is an interesting addition to the park. Also located in the northern part of the park. The pomp is made of thick sandstone entwined with ivy leaves and ends in a huge crown of branches and foliage.

Dovecote
This is the second element in the village park. Located close to northern facade parka. This is a wooden shingle roof.

guard house
Two guard houses in the southeast of the park. Exact time their construction is unknown. However, they were mentioned as early as 1843. These are square one-story buildings, decorated with mirrors. The southern facade of both buildings in the middle of the bay with a pyramidal roof. Other facades are biaxial.

No. 7 - Residential building
This house is located in the southwestern part of the park and belonged to the director of the park. Currently used as residential building. The one-story house has a rectangular shape. The house is plastered with red-tinted plaster.

In addition to the above facilities, the park has five swimming pools, chinese lake, a stone fountain for birds and a sandstone chapel of the Mother of God.

An interesting addition is a cast-iron bridge in the so-called Chinese lake, which was created at the suggestion of Prouvotov after 1874.

Hello friends! Excursions to the castles of the Czech Republic are an exciting activity, and if you can photograph the interiors, then it is doubly interesting. Photos allow you to repeat the journey, albeit virtually. Now we will implement such virtual tour at the castle of Sychrov.

You examined the castle from all sides, and also walked in the garden. Now let's take a look at the apartments, where everything is decorated with the help of the best woodcarvers who have created a unique interior. As an example, such a ceiling depicting the heraldic signs of the Rogan family - the owners of the Sychrov castle:

It seems that the owners were guided by the principle that everything in their castle should be beautiful - from the hall to the bedroom. Each hall, private apartment or corridor is decorated with elegance and style. A separate wing of the building is occupied by a chapel. The tour in the castle is organized in such a way that visitors first of all visit the chapel, and then inspect the chambers. I will still find an opportunity to tell about the chapel, but now we will start directly from the residential part of the castle:

  1. Lobby with stairs
  2. Prince's territory
  3. Princess' apartment
  4. Salons of the castle

Lobby with stairs

Visitors are greeted in the lobby by the most significant representative of the French family, Rohan, albeit in the form of a life-size marble sculpture…

The military leader and diplomat Heinrich de Rogan was the cousin of Henry of Navarre. And although the illustrious duke could not have been in this castle, since he lived in a more early time, the descendants of the family emphasized that it was they who followed the Bourbons in inheriting the throne of Navarre. And the corresponding knightly paraphernalia opposite:

In the lobby there is a staircase with magnificent railings, which are made of oak wood, complemented by stands for lamps, impregnated with special resins and paints so that they look like cast iron:

The photo shows not only a staircase with patterned railings, but also wooden coffered ceilings. All wooden cladding in the castle and wood products are the work of craftsman Piotr Bush and his sons Dominik and Konstantin.

You probably noticed the exquisite combination of carved railings and emblems and symbols regularly depicted on the walls of the lobby? I note that from the very first steps in this castle you involuntarily ascertain the importance of its owners.

The royal living room and bedroom is not just a metaphorical name for the most beautiful apartments. These rooms, indeed, are intended for the most eminent persons who often visited Sychrov. They are called royal because they are decorated with portraits of French kings. Here are large portraits of Louis XIII (left) and his son Louis XIV, who went down in history as the Sun King:

Be sure to take a look at the beautiful ceilings - the work of Piotr Bush. The master worked in the castle for 38 years and created in every room unique ornaments on the ceiling and on the walls, made parquet floors and furniture. Everything is done with such skill that the castle of Sychrov has become a favorite place for filmmakers, and its salons and halls are in several films.

Sofa amazing beauty also made by this master. And above the sofa is another portrait of the Sun King.

The living room is followed by the bedroom of the royal apartments, where the main object is a carved bed with a luxurious canopy:

It seems that such a bed would be more suitable for a princess or a duchess, but mostly men stayed here. AND french king Charles X was visiting, and the Prussian King Wilhelm I was visiting, and Emperor Franz Joseph I was staying...

An interesting picture depicts three grandsons of Louis XIV with a governess:

The Chinese salon, furnished with objects delivered from Japan and China, is also referred to the royal apartments. In the 18th century, a boom in oriental products began throughout Europe, which were necessarily supposed to be shown to guests or visitors. In Dresden, thanks to such a surge, appeared. Every self-respecting European owner of the castle had his own small collection. Of course, a Chinese room appeared in Sychrov:

But this does not mean at all that all the oriental paraphernalia was collected in one salon. There are products from China and in other apartments.

Prince's territory

Curiosity is already undermining how the rooms of the owner of the castle look like. As you can see, the guests in Sychrov were very taken care of, but what are the prince's apartments like? The castle has preserved the furnishings that were created in the middle of the 19th century by Camille Rogan. The prince became the owner of Sychrov in 1846 and immediately set about reconstructing the castle in the Romantic Gothic style, and the reconstruction concerned both the architecture of the building and the interiors.

The prince's office reflects his business and research character. There is a microscope on the table and an encyclopedia of plants is open, which indicates the prince's strong passion for biology:

It was Camille de Rogan who ennobled the large castle garden and created an arboretum in Sychrov.

In the prince's office, as in almost all the halls of the castle, there are paintings. Among the portraits in the center is the wife of Prince Adele.

The prince's bedroom is not as luxuriously decorated as in the royal apartments, but no less worthy:

As for the unusual object in front of the window, this is a vessel for fumigating the bedroom with aromas. The family portrait next to the window also attracts attention. The marriage of Camille and Adele was childless, and the painting depicts the family of Prince Benjamin's younger brother.

Needless to say, this is also a work of Piotr Bush. The stairs lead to the third floor, where the guest rooms are equipped.

Princess' apartment

Ladies' apartments include a chapel, a bedroom, an office and an entrance hall. The bedroom of the Countess is decorated with a huge tapestry, made in XIX century French masters. The tapestry tells about the touching love of a shepherd and a shepherdess:

The princess's office is more like a secular salon. However, it was here that Adele de Rogan worked: she wrote letters, received visitors.

According to a good tradition, in the princess's office, you can continue your acquaintance with the Rogan family. In the central painting, which depicts a girl in a dark blue dress, you can see Louise Julie de Rogan, who was ranked among the most beautiful women in the court of the Sun King.

Salons of the castle

In Sychrov Castle, residential apartments alternate with salons that can be found for every taste. All of them, basically, are created for a cozy pastime and are somewhat similar. But there are some stylized rooms. One of them is the Hunting Salon:

Here, too, everything is in order with comfort, but how many trophies are attached to the walls! Probably, there was not enough space in the cabin to show their hunting heritage, so heads with branched horns are also placed in the corridors:

remember a large number of similar decorations in the castle, but still there is far from Sychrov's abundance.

There is also a salon with a fireplace, which also served as a living room in the princess's apartment. And there is also a large salon with a beautiful figured ceiling:

Skillful wall cladding, patterns on the floor and ceiling - everything here reflects the symbolism of the Rogan family. Grand saloon has direct access to the park.

Among the row of dining rooms should be one where quite a lot of guests can gather. Of course, there is such a festive dining room in the castle:

The large table can seat 24 people. Although for such a rather big castle, this is not so much. For example, in a miniature similar table looks more impressive.

The walls in the dining room are also decorated with portraits of representatives of the family. The owners of the castle are depicted here in the attire of the knights of the Order of the Golden Fleece.

Friends, I have already visited many castles in the Czech Republic, and I can say that Sychrov has a rich and sophisticated interior. The castle and Sychrov have something in common in their design in the sense that wood decoration is used in abundance in both castles. What impression did the apartments and salons of these properties make on you? There are still many details that I would like to note. Therefore, the theme of Sikhrov continues on my blog. And if you are interested in the castle, explore and go on a tour!

Your euro guide Tatiana

Good afternoon, dear readers! What could be better than traveling around cities and countries? Today we will climb to the very north of Bohemia and look at the famous pearl of Karya Sychrov Castle. Since the 15th century, the castle has been home to many famous historical figures. And yet, as many as three famous Czechoslovak films were filmed here. Stay in this interesting place just necessary. Let's do it together?

Most romantic castle northern Bohemia is called Sychrov. locals his name is simply Český ráj. The translation is clear even without a dictionary. So why is this Czech Paradise?

Majestic, but delicate, the fortress was built by a visiting French architect. And the French knight Lamotte de Frintropp lived here.

Construction was completed by the beginning of the 15th century. So the castle can be considered relatively "young".

By the way, these are not the only French people who lived here. And even King Charles X himself spent some time in Sychrov. True, until he was overthrown in 1834. Then he had to hastily leave Bohemia.

In 1740, Zámek Sychrov experienced the most unpleasant years. It became a large warehouse, and the premises of the castle were used ... for agricultural needs. Unfortunately, then much was irretrievably lost.

By 1820, the land and buildings were acquired by Karl Rogan. He was able to see the beauty of the castle and decided to restore it.

Now, in the appearance of the castle, Baroque and Romanticism styles were successfully combined, later Neo-Gothic elements were added. But only outside.

Sychrov Castle also has a poetic name - the Carved Miracle of the Czech Republic. You will understand this when you go inside.

Most of the interiors are made of wood. Piotr Bushek created real dark wood lace. Few people can boast of such fine carving. It cost a fortune, of course. Although, it was definitely worth it, because the castle became famous throughout the Czech Republic. It was spoken of as the "Pearl of Bohemia".

Some time after the end of World War II, the Nazis settled in the castle. But, soon he came under the patronage Czech state and was opened as a museum.

Park around the castle

Duke Rogan ordered an English park to be laid out around his castle. The so-called "botanical collection" settled here: exotic plants from all over the world. Most of the wonders of the park have survived to this day. Here you will see:

  • old water tower. It has three floors, the tower served to supply water to the most remote corners of the garden. Even in a dry summer everything was green here. The tower is made in the style of the Italian Renaissance.

  • Greenhouses full of all kinds of plants. Many of them are absolutely not adapted to live in the climate of northern Bohemia. They were given special care.
  • A peculiar shade of medieval romance is the artificial ruins of Arthur's Castle. Here you can dream a lot among the ruins, tune in to a creative way.
  • Stone pump. Another building for the plumbing system. By the way, quite modern for the beginning of the 19th century.
  • What is a castle without its own Dovecote? The old way of sending and receiving mail.
  • Small Guard House. Everything is clear here. The "pearl" of Bohemia had to be well guarded. The guards lived right here on the property.

  • If you go further, you will find a small Chinese lake with iron bridges, pools and fountains.

It's a very beautiful place, so don't forget to charge your camera. For photographers, this is a special paradise.

Museum and painting collection

Inside you will find a collection of French paintings that Rogan brought with him. Later, it was supplemented.

Now the collection is recognized as one of the largest in the world (!) There are not only landscapes, still lifes and battle scenes. The collection contains unique portraits famous people familiar to us from the novels of Hugo and Stendhal.

A portrait of Cardinal Richelieu has been preserved.

In addition, a collection of antique furniture, porcelain, weapons and clocks, books and manuscripts is exhibited in the halls of the castle.

Here you will also see the owner's hunting trophies, as well as a collection of hunting weapons from different eras.

A portrait gallery remains in memory of the owners. It contains 242 portraits of all members of the Rogan family.

Be sure to check out the Chapel Mother of God inside the castle. It is famous for its stained-glass windows, the work of master Jan Quast. These are some colorful biblical stories.

The chapel contains a number of sculptures of Rogan's ancestors.

Filmed here

Sikhrov lit up in the cinema. Two films are released in 1972. The action takes place on the territory of the castle.

The first film is the comedy Immortal Auntie, and the second is another fairy tale. The film "Goldilocks" based on the novel by Erben.

Now you know that these are not some special decorations, but the very carved decor of Sychrov.

Many write that the film "Three Nuts for Cinderella" was filmed on the territory of the castle. In fact, the movie was partly filmed in German castle Moritzburg.

In general, more than 30 films have been filmed in the castle since 1970.

Ghost of Bertha Rogan

The owner of Sykhrov had a daughter, Berta Rogan. In the castle, she is known as the "Black Lady". Berta still lives here. True, now Bertha moves silently around the castle and freely passes through the walls.

Yes, you understood correctly. The castle is haunted by a ghost. It is very neat. He likes cleanliness and order, so that everything is in its place. And he just can't stand it when something is rearranged. Move the table in one of the rooms, take away the chair - tomorrow morning everything will be in its place.

In many rooms of the palace you will see a portrait of a beautiful woman dressed in black. This is Bertha Rogan - the Black Lady. She does not like to show herself to tourists and is constantly busy with business.

Every day and every night for centuries, the ghost of Bertha Rogan has guarded the treasure. Moreover, she guards them very well.

Almost all historians who have explored Sychrov are sure that huge wealth is hidden somewhere in the dungeons. It got there during the time of the Bourgeois Revolution in France. Nobody has seen him since. Or is it just that Bertha doesn't want to part with her jewels?

If you are ready to visit the castle, then excursions to Sychrov and the Kost fortress are carried from Prague. You can get to know them here And here.
