Grodno- a city that is almost 1000 years old. According to one of the legends, the name comes from the word "to fence" - when fortifications were built during Ancient Rus', then they surrounded the city with a moat, rampart, walls. It was first mentioned in chronicles in 1005, and in the second half of the 12th century it became a major center of handicraft and trade life. In the Middle Ages, Grodno was the center of a small principality, and in the middle of the 13th century it became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1496 Grodno received the Magdeburg Law. In the XV-XVII centuries. It was Grodno that was the residence of Vitovt and Stefan Batory. In the center of the city there was the Town Hall Square and the Old Castle, from which the streets radiated and life began. The New Castle was built in the 18th century. In 1988, Old Grodno was declared a monument of urban planning and architecture. Only Grodno has this status, because it is here, like in no other city, that the general layout and development of the Old Town has been preserved.

Due to the terrain, the layout of the city is not symmetrical, so in Grodno you can often wander into the nooks and crannies narrow streets. But in any case, sooner or later, all paths will lead either to Ozheshko Street, which turns into Sovetskaya, or to the Neman. Ozheshko street starts from railway station, on the way to the city center you can see the Lutheran Church, the building of the University. Ya. Kupala, Pokrovsky Cathedral, Zhiliber Park, square with a monument to Lenin. By the way, the previous names of Ozheshko Street - Roskosh, Sadovaya, Muravyovskaya, and since the 1920s. she received the name of the Polish writer Eliza Orzeszko, who was born in the Grodno region, and since 1870 lived in Grodno. In the house on Sadovaya Street, 17, there was her house, now there is a branch of the library named after E.F. Karsky and a small museum. Across the river Gorodnichanka stands a monument to Eliza Ozheshko sculptor R. Zerich.

On both sides along Orzeszko Street stretches Gilibert Park, which was founded in 1775 and has long been considered one of the best botanical gardens in Europe.

J.E. Gilibert was an outstanding scientist, teacher and educator of his time. He came to Grodno from Lyon at the invitation of Anthony Tyzengauz, opened the Medical Academy, a pharmacy and founded a garden. Studied plants and their beneficial features. On the territory of the park there are statues of Grodnovchanka - a girl thoughtfully sitting in a clearing, the creator of the park Gilibert and the outstanding architect of Grodno - Giuseppe Sacco.

Pedestrian Sovetskaya Street (formerly called Vilna, Dominican, Bridge, Gymnasial, Cathedral and Hindenburgstrasse) is filled with establishments, as well as shopping in the Neman shopping mall or small shops and souvenir shops. The development of Sovietskaya in the form in which we know it now was formed in the 16th-19th centuries, when stone buildings began to appear in the city, which housed hotels, shops and shops. There were houses and flats on the street. famous people, and from the male classical gymnasium, which was located at house number 6 along this street, more than one generation of great minds and politicians came out.

The center of life in the era of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Commonwealth was the trade (town hall) square, which went seven streets of the city. On the square stood town hall, houses of merchants and nobility, monasteries, churches and churches. It was historical Center a city with monuments, squares, shops, cafes and just nice views with beautiful low houses. Now it is Sovetskaya Square, on which, on one side, stands the Cathedral Church of St. Francis Xavier, and on the other, the church and monastery of the Bernardines.

Church of St. Francis Xavier is one of the three temples of Belarus, which is called small basilica. It was built in the 17th century and was part of the Jesuit monastery complex. The height of the towers of the temple is 65 meters, on the left tower there is a clock with a mechanism of 1671 - this is the only clock in Europe that has survived from that time and is working properly. The main altar houses more than 40 figures, and the iconostasis is one of the tallest baroque altars in Europe.

Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross is the oldest functioning Catholic church in Grodno and one of the oldest in the west of Belarus. The first wooden church on this site was built in 1494, and the stone monastery was founded at the turn of the XVI-XVII centuries. The church was consecrated in 1618 by Bishop of Vilna Evstafiy Volovich. The functioning organ of the 18th century has been preserved in the church.

On Bridge Street, one of the main transport arteries of the city, the building rises drama theater, in front of which, on the banks of the Neman, there are abandoned buildings of the Grodno brewery, whose products in the 19th century were known far beyond the borders of Belarus.

On Sverdlov street, actually high place in front of the railway, there are two beauty towers - these are former water towers, which are popularly called "Kasya and Basya". Octagonal, 22 meters high, they now serve as workshops for artists and artisans. You can only get inside if you have familiar friends from there;)

The uniqueness of Grodno is that during the Great Patriotic War the city did not undergo significant destruction, and during the operation "Bagration" the Red Army took the city without resistance. Therefore, most of the pre-war buildings have retained their appearance. In addition, Grodno successfully combines various architectural styles- from ancient Russian architecture to modern and constructivism.

What else to see in Grodno:

The main sights of Grodno, which can be seen in one day or even half a day (since the city is small and everything is relatively close) - these are the Old and New Castles, the Farny Church, the Kalozha Church, the Lutheran Church, the Fire Station, water towers, monasteries and churches. The center of the city of Grodno is quite spacious, but at the same time compact, walking around it is a pleasure. Even self-guided tour across Grodno can become memorable only by one sense of visual saturation with sights that open at every step.

Try to find the Grodno Mona Lisa in the painting at the Fire station;) By the way, every day at 12.00 a trumpeter rises to the fire tower and performs a melody. The tower has Observation deck and equipped with a small museum about the history of the fire and rescue service.

In general, there are many interesting museums and tourist sites in Grodno. There is a museum of iron, urban life, beekeeping (created for students of veterinary faculties), not to mention literary and memorial museums.

Near the Farny Church is the very first pharmacy in Belarus, where there is a cozy museum with collections of ancient pharmaceutical supplies, the herbarium of Eliza Orzeszko and other medical artifacts. The pharmacy building was built in 1709 by the Jesuits and it was one of the first pharmacies in Europe.

old lock

Built at the end of the 11th century. Located on the right bank of the Neman. Vytautas rebuilt it into gothic style from a wooden fortress, and later Stefan Batory brought a renaissance to appearance castle and made it his residence. In 2012, a plan was developed for the reconstruction of the Old Castle, but so far it houses Grodno Historical and Archaeological Museum. As for visiting the museum in the Old Castle, it is worth warning here: be prepared for the exposition, which, as it was made in the 70-80s, remained in that time. The entrance ticket costs 4.5 rubles (as of July 2017), so, unfortunately, we will not recommend this museum as a mandatory item in the program.

But you can walk along the hills with the ruins of the Old Castle. It is here that the strength, power and greatness of bygone times are felt. Just imagine what these hills survived for their centuries of history!

new castle

King of the Commonwealth August III in 1737-1740 ordered the construction of a palace in the late Baroque style, which was supposed to be similar to the building of the Dresden art gallery(Zwinger Palace). At the end of the 18th century, the castle was rebuilt by the architect J. Sacco. The apartments of the king were located here, meetings of the Senate were held. A tiled roof, rich stucco, rich halls and a lush garden - such was the castle under the last king of the Commonwealth, Stanislav August Poniatowski. Unfortunately, during the war, the building burned down, and the Soviet era turned the rebuilt palace in the style of Soviet neoclassicism into a regional committee of the party, so it is almost impossible to imagine the New Castle in its former grandeur.

Borisoglebskaya (Kalozhskaya) Church

One of the five surviving structures in Belarus from the time of Ancient Rus', refers to XII century. It is a cross-domed temple. The walls are made of plinth and boulders, in places decorated with frescoes and majolica compositions in the form of crosses. Inside, the floor was lined with colorful majolica tiles. Today the Church of Kaluga looks like this:

Unfortunately, in 1853, due to the washing away of the southern wall by the waters of the Neman, part of the church collapsed. In our time, a fortification was made, but it was never possible to restore it to its original form. But this does not prevent you from feeling the special spirit of the time and being surprised by the unique views both outside and inside. Inside, by the way, the Borisoglebskaya church is not decorated with frescoes, they are only in the altar part. This was due to the necks of the golosniks protruding from the walls - empty amphorae, which were walled up in the walls to facilitate construction and create acoustics. Such an architectural solution testifies to the peculiarities of the Grodno school of architecture, because there are no more similar churches in other parts of Belarus.

Among them are beautiful churches: the Church of the Finding of the Holy Cross, the Church of the Annunciation in the Brigitok Monastery, the Church of the Virgin Mary of Angels in the Franciscan Monastery and the pearl among them is the Cathedral of St. Francis Xavier (it is also called Farny).

Grodno is a city that breathes history. This Belarusian regional center often called the most European city Belarus. And this assertion is not unfounded. And the center of Grodno is generally almost a time machine: it seems that you are in the Middle Ages. We will walk around this wonderful city and appreciate its beauty in the photographs. From experience, I can say that you won’t be able to see everything in one day, so I advise you to find a good accommodation option in the hotel search form and stay here comfortably.

How to get there:

Grodno is located 301 kilometers from Minsk, and the best way to get to it is by train. We started at night, i.e. at 23:00 departure from Minsk and at 7:00 in the morning you are in Grodno, the second option is fixed-route taxis, but firstly they are more expensive, and secondly they travel for a very long time, it is more comfortable on the train. Well, the third option is on your car, the best option, you will get from Minsk in about 3 hours.

Sights of Grodno, what to see:

Just from the railway station, all the fun begins. At first, just the streets, on which, among the ordinary buildings, they slowly peep through interesting houses, For example - ivy-covered house - pictured below:

Walking along Eloise Ozheshko Street, you will see a very beautiful, richly decorated Orthodox Holy Intercession Cathedral.

take a few minutes and be sure to go inside:

Of course, in Grodno there are most of all churches, here it really blows with the spirit of Catholicism. But besides this, other denominations are also represented. For example, further in the yards - an old, shabby, but no less amazing Lutheran church. Services are even held there, though only on Sundays. Going out again to Ozheshko Street, you will see a nice house - a library named after this glorious writer.

Next - a picturesque and relief park named after the famous botanist, biologist and physician Zheliber with a small river in the lowland. In the park, the immortal Geliber himself sits on a bench, which, unknowingly, can be confused with Napoleon because of the characteristic cocked hat. The park is truly breathtaking. Having risen from the lowland, we are faced with a choice of where to go. To the right is an eternal flame, to the left are pretty streets and a monument to Eliza Ozheshko, and to the right is a standard square with Lenin in the center and the city executive committee. But behind this dreary ideological place lies real wealth - Pedestrian street Sovetskaya!

The entrance to it is very comfortably framed by drinking establishments in medieval style and registry office. The Soviet one has become a trade one, it is full of signs, but it is definitely worth a visit, especially if your trip to Grodno fell on a cloudy day: the coloring of the houses is simply incredible for Belarus! The brightest shades of yellow, sand, orange, beige, lilac, light green and blue!
Grodno is still famous for its chebureks, there are really a lot of them and tasty, though with some Soviet ones in service, one of the oldest on the Soviet one, be sure to visit, the interiors are impressive:

We advise you to go to the main sights of Grodno on this street. Next is Farny church- a bright, elevated building, next to which you simply feel the atmosphere of a medieval city.

The decoration of the church inside is amazing and shows us the former greatness of the city, not so long ago a fire destroyed two sculptures, but at the moment all restoration work has been completed and you can enjoy the decoration in the photographs below, and best of all live:

On the territory of the church there is a prison surrounded by a high white wall. And in the next building there is a pharmacy-museum. You can also go there, this is one of the oldest pharmacies, it is both a functioning and a museum:

From the same point you can see the fire tower, another attraction of Grodno is the fire tower:

The Neman impresses with its width. Further along the coast, on the hills, there are the main sights of Grodno, for which tourists go - the Old and New Castles with a museum part inside, a fire tower, on which a trumpeter plays every day at 12 o'clock, a restored Jewish synagogue, and, finally, the legendary Kalozhskaya church.

That part of it, which looks at the Neman, was once destroyed due to a flood, and therefore is now rebuilt from planks, but the second part has retained a unique brickwork, crosses made of stone and just whole boulders since the 12th century! It is easier to get to all these sights from the side of the city than from the banks of the Neman, but a steep stone staircase leads to the Kolozhskaya Church, and it is large stones that act as steps, so you can dilute your trip with a drop of extreme.

In Grodno, you should definitely go overnight, wander along the illuminated streets, chat with street musicians, and go to Karchma opposite the local GUM department store, taste wonderful pork ribs and Lida beer:
