Uzhgorod is the westernmost regional center of Ukraine. Volcanic dome: a journey to the quarry. Parks and squares

On the territory of Uzhhorod and its environs there are many places that will be interesting for tourists to see.

At the very foothills of the Carpathians there is a beautiful city that dates back more than 1000 years. The river, called Uzh, like a huge snake winds around, divides the area into several parts. Do not pay attention to the fact that the city is not very large sizes, believe me, there is something to stop your eyes on.

Tourists who have been here share their impressions of what they saw with admiration, and strive to come here again and again. Multinational, bright, colorful, original, hospitable and cordial - that's all Uzhgorod!

It is impossible to find suitable words to express their attitude and love for Uzhgorod of the people inhabiting this region. Proximity of countries European Union makes it possible for numerous Western tourists to visit the region, which they do with great pleasure.

Walking through the remote corners of the old town, you are completely immersed in the distant past of the city. Involuntarily, thoughts come to mind that you are in the era of bygone years ... All ancient buildings can be safely attributed to architectural masterpieces. The overall picture is not spoiled at all, but rather perfectly complemented by modern buildings.

As for the most accurate age of the city, there are still disputes between scientists and archaeologists on this topic. Many stop at the beginning of the 10th and the end of the 11th centuries, when the formation of the Hungarian state took place.

One of the first written references is a document dated 1154. Until 1840 the city was called Ungvar. In the history of the city there are still quite a lot of "blank spots", there is still a lot to explore and prove. Despite this, there is much to see and admire.

Uzhgorod did not begin to flourish immediately, the way we see it now, the city has been becoming for many hundreds of years. Residents are very fond of their ancient city, and make a lot of efforts to keep it in the attractive state in which it is on this moment.

Reviews of tourists

If you still doubt the expediency of a trip to Uzhgorod, go to the Internet and look at the reviews of people who have already visited this interesting city. Surely you will find there much more positive feedback about the trip than negative ones. By the number of positive opinions of travelers, this city occupies one of the first places among all tourist destinations. places of Ukraine.

For many who have visited this worthy city, goosebumps just run from the memories of the coffee smell that hovers in the capital of Transcarpathia and does not let you pass by numerous cafes and cozy restaurants. A lot of expensive and cozy hotels and not expensive hostels make Uzhgorod attractive for tourists with any budget.

We can say one thing for sure - having arrived in the westernmost region of Ukraine for the weekend, you will fall in love with this region completely. Proximity brings an unusual originality and originality in everything. It even breathes in a special way. The clean air of the Carpathians intoxicates and literally drives you crazy. From what he saw around, the soul is overwhelmed with positive emotions.
Welcome to Uzhgorod!

Don't rush to leave! Here are some more interesting articles:

  • Hostels in Lviv. Economical and comfortable.

  • Sights of Chisinau - ancient and picturesque

Autumn in Uzhgorod is quite beautiful.
In spring, I think the city is brighter. After winter, the famous blooms sakura. Magnolia pleases residents and guests ...

But we were in October. And on the day of our arrival, the temperature jumped over 20 degrees, which, after the cold Kyiv September and October, seemed like a terrible heat.
Jackets, sweaters were thrown off, but even in one shirt it was quite hot. Such is amazing place with its own microclimate.
The Carpathian Mountains separated this corner of Ukraine from northern winds and allowed plants to live, which usually feel good only in mild climates, such as, for example, in the South Coast.

We started sightseeing from the center.
You can start with the famous Uzhhorod Castle, which in modern form has been standing for about seven centuries. He can see the classic layout with all sorts of protective - defensive structures, which made it possible to keep the defense against all sorts of infidels, but we did not see anything special in it.

Uzhgorod Castle is mostly photographed from this angle.
It is simply the most convenient and accessible place to shoot.

Inside the main building, to attract and retain tourists on the territory of the fortress, there are expositions of the Regional Museum of Local Lore: folk art, spiritual culture, ethnography, firearms, etc.
Probably everyone can find something of their own here. Personally, I liked the weapon room. central part the exposition is decorated with a saber of some famous comrade.
For those who have never seen anything like this, it will be interesting.

From the walls of the castle offers a good view of the city. They will even show you the direction where to look to see Nevitsky castle. It is 12 km away, but something like that can be seen there in good weather. And you can go there on a tour if you have free time. We didn't go, we just looked from the wall.

It is difficult to see the Nevitsky castle. But you can imagine.

The best way to imagine the whole structure of the castle as a whole, if you look at the panorama under the glass, which stands immediately behind the entrance.

There are several sculptures on the territory of the castle. The bird of prey is impressive, which once held a saber in its beak. The vandals took it from there. Turul, this is the name of this predator - a bird from Hungarian mythology. You will be told about it and about the events associated with this bird beautiful legend. If you entered the castle without a guide, you can always join a group that walks around the territory in abundance there, at least on weekends.

The same Turul.

The stove in the Uzhgorod castle, which heated the cold walls.

Furniture that can be seen inside the castle.

Inner courtyard of the castle.

A well in the courtyard of the castle, which supplied water to the defenders of the fortress.

The interior of the castle.

After the castle, you should have a bite to eat in one of the restaurants in the central part of the city or just stop by for coffee, because visiting all the museums, casemates and other things is somewhat tiring and requires energy recovery. If you want, of course, to see something else with eyes full of interest.

Passing to the Castle, it is impossible not to pay attention to Holy Cross Cathedral which we certainly visited. Our guide, whom we asked for two hours (for money) to be our guide and storyteller around the city, revealed to us interesting points about this cathedral, where different religious movements intertwined. Because of this, inside the temple you can see elements inherent in both Catholic and Orthodox Church. I will not delve into this deeply, the topic requires great knowledge and delicate handling.

Holy Cross Cathedral near Uzhhorod Castle is worth it
to visit him.

Iconostasis of the Exaltation of the Cross Cathedral.

Below is another interesting tourist facility. It's already Roman Catholic Parish of St. George. They were not inside.
Then we turned to the river and went through Uzhgorod Orthodox Synagogue, which serves the city as a regional philharmonic society. The facade looks decent, but if you look from the sides, and this can be done from the side of the river, you can see that the building is “sick”. The back is especially sick. This can be seen clearly in the photo.

The former Uzhgorod Orthodox synagogue, and today's Philharmonic from the facade looks very decent.

… but if you look at it from the other side, you can see a slightly different picture…

Behind the unrestored philharmonic-synagogue there is another sad object that symbolizes either the bygone Soviet era, or simply the mismanagement or lack of money of the authorities.
This is JD Children's Railway . You can see for yourself in the photo how it all looks now. When adult objects are abandoned, this is not surprising and does not cause any special feelings. Unless, of course, this "object" is not directly related to you and your destiny. But for children, they evoke some kind of sadness for some reason. Like - they couldn’t, they didn’t save ..

Relatively recently, there was a more cheerful view.

From this platform, a children's diesel locomotive set off on its short journey, 1 km long.

Now the diesel locomotive and the entire train of two cars are waiting for better times...

... who knows, maybe someday they will come - better times, for the Uzhgorod children's railway?

But let's go further. For fun and enjoyment.
Nearby through the Theater Square we will walk along Footbridge Uzhgorod. In addition to the view of the river, which in autumn does not impress with its power in any way, there are interesting symbols of love forever on the bridge. As, probably already in any more or less large city.

These are various locks, locks on the railing and lattice of the bridge. Only in Uzhgorod they approach this more creatively. See for yourself how interestingly couples in love express their devotion when they bind themselves with the bonds of Hymen. Usually everything is limited to locks of different calibers.

Locks, locks, hearts on the Uzhgorod pedestrian bridge.

These interesting figures can be seen on the lattices of the bridge, if you walk slowly along it.

There are also such masterpieces that will probably seal the marriage forever.

In October, the Uzh River is so shallow that even a child can ford it.
Here it is right in the middle of the river.

"Leg" of the bridge in the middle of the river. You can see the bottom.

After crossing the bridge, we come back and walk along Linden alley, which different dimensions from one to two kilometers stretches along the river of the city. She was appointed the largest in Europe. Everything can be.

Lime alley in Uzhgorod, which is considered the longest in Europe.

At the beginning of the alley there is a monument to the artist Ignatius Roshkovich who draws something. Since he was not erected on a pedestal, but simply stands among people, I want to look into what he is doing there. We look and see pedestrian bridge, as he was at the time of the work of this gentleman, famous in narrow circles.

Monument to the artist Roshkovich on the embankment of the river Uzh.

You can peep what the artist draws by looking at the master's canvas.

Nearby is the Korzo pedestrian street. It's worth walking through. There, in addition to any cafe-shops, there are interesting monument lamplighter uncle Kolya, who froze at the crossroads of Korzo and Voloshin streets, thoughtfully stretching out his hands to the lantern to light another lighting fixture. Below on the ground is his briefcase stuffed with reading matter.

Monument on the wall of the house to the lamplighter (likhtarnik) Uncle Kolya.

A little more - and he will reach the lantern ..

If you are not tired yet, then you can go along Lime Alley to White House in Uzhgorod- the building of the local administration. The area in front of this building has seen a lot, now it has been dug up, something is being improved there.

Uzhgorod has its own White House.

Monument to artists I. Bokshay and A. Erdeli in the center of Uzhgorod.

Globe of Uzhhorod. If you get lost, you can always find your way thanks to this device.

Well, perhaps this is the main thing that we managed to see and what I wanted to talk about from local attractions. This, of course, is not all. There was not enough time for more, but we got a general idea of the city.

Where to eat in Uzhgorod.

Attractions are good, but you always need to have a snack in order to correctly perceive the information and remember it well. And then what can you tell? No, not to children and grandchildren twenty years after the visit, but simply to acquaintances immediately after the trip.

"Eat" can be divided into "drink coffee" and "lunch and dinner".
Western Ukraine in terms of inexpensive but good cafes has never disappointed. The leader here, of course, is Lviv. (This is my personal opinion - do not throw tomatoes at me). But in Uzhgorod we saw a lot of worthy cafes and restaurants. Of course, it was not possible to visit everything. Yes, and there was no such task. But those that fed and watered us, I would like to note.

Cafe "Florence" on st. Voloshin. There is pretty good ice cream, a large selection of cakes, unusual and tasty, inexpensive delicious coffee (delicious coffee - if you want). Only we ate all the goodies in the establishment opposite. It is called differently, but the assortment and menu too. It's more comfortable, more space.

Cafe "Florence", where you can drink coffee and taste delicious cakes and ice cream.

From the restaurants we looked into "Chicago" on st. Korzo. It was warm, all the people were outside, but it was quite cozy inside. The prices are cheap. Quite edible.
If you want to have a snack or drink coffee with a view of nature, you can sit in a restaurant right next to the footbridge from the old town. I didn’t remember its name, but if you walk on Theater Square, you will definitely see it. It's a little more expensive, but the coffee is delicious and the view is beautiful.
Not far away, there is another wonderful cafe for lovers of sweets. On the square Fentsik literally two steps away there is a cafe "Chocolate", where you can choose a delicious cake and all sorts of other goodies, and then on the street, if good weather eat it all with great pleasure. The prices are very humane.

Well, perhaps everything. Everything we have visited. There is also a restaurant in the hotel, but no one will go there on purpose, this is understandable.

We were pleased with the trip. I plan to be here in the spring, maybe not this one, but somehow. It might be passing. I liked the city. Calm, clean, affordable and comfortable.

Uzhgorod is the smallest city among the regional centers of Ukraine, the administrative center of the Transcarpathian region and Uzhgorod district, rich in sights, located on the banks of the river. Already. The population of Uzhgorod is about 115 thousand.

Attractions Uzhhorod

Uzhgorod castle dates back to the end of the 10th century. It was rebuilt many times, strengthened, changed owners and was never taken by storm. Now there is a local history museum and other sights of Uzhgorod.

Holy Cross Cathedral

The main Christian temple, landmark and business card the city of Uzhgorod. The cathedral was built by the Jesuits, in 1973 passed to the Greek Catholics. Two symmetrical domes serve as bell towers with huge bells weighing 1 and 3 tons.

Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life

The Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life is an interesting attraction of Uzhgorod, located next to the Uzhgorod Castle (33/a, Kapitulna st.). Here are ancient Transcarpathian dwellings and traditional outbuildings.

More about the sights of Uzhgorod

In the XVIII century. the city stepped onto the left bank of the Uzh, where the territory of the drained swamp began to be intensively built up. 6 new streets and several squares appear here. But the buildings that dominate the architectural appearance of modern Uzhgorod were traditionally built in the old city. The following sights have survived from this century to the present day: the building of the zhupanat (zhupa is an administrative unit of Hungary since the 13th century), built in 1766; Roman Catholic Church (1775-1780); a masterpiece of wooden cult architecture of Transcarpathia - Shelestovskaya Church (1777), 30 years ago transferred to the Museum of Folk Architecture and Life.

In the old part of the city, the path to which lies along the pedestrian bridge across Uzh and Theater Square, many residential and commercial buildings have been preserved, which are architectural landmarks of the 18th-19th centuries. and ennoble it architectural appearance. Among the religious buildings of the early XX century. worthy of attention is such a landmark of Uzhgorod as the synagogue (1904), built in the Neo-Moorish style characteristic of the Jewish buildings of this period and, due to its huge size, adapted for the philharmonic society in the post-war period, as well as another attraction - the Calvinist church (1906).

Ironically, the oldest cult building in Uzhgorod is considered to be a landmark located in the village of Goryany (now a suburb) - the Goryanskaya rotunda (XII century), in which unique frescoes made in the 1360-1370s.

Natural attractions of Uzhgorod

The oldest natural landmark of the capital of Transcarpathia is a volcanic dome, formed 5-7 million years ago during the formation of the volcanic Carpathians. It is located in the urban area of Radvanka and is partly developed in the same name, in last years flooded career. The combination of massive columnar basalts with turquoise water of the quarry creates a surprisingly majestic and picturesque natural and technogenic landscape.

And one more interesting natural highlight of Uzhgorod, which is not typical for the rest of Ukraine, is the numerous cherry trees planted on the central streets of the city. In May they bloom intensively, and on May holidays tourists come to Uzhgorod just to enjoy the beautiful picturesque views of these trees.

Our Facebook page.

After the story about the extraordinary town, it would probably be unfair to keep silent about Uzhgorod, administrative center Transcarpathian region. As you already understood from the title of the article, this is the westernmost regional center of our country, and it is located right on the border with Slovakia. If you look at Google maps, you can see that runway Uzhgorod airport ends tens of meters from the territory of Slovakia. Any plane taking off or landing in Uzhhorod will inevitably cross air space our western neighbors. =)

The population of Uzhgorod is only 115 thousand people, so Uzhgorod is also known for being the least populated regional center of Ukraine. Since Uzhgorod is located at a considerable distance from most major Ukrainian cities, many residents of our country know very little about this city and have not been to it. Well, let's try to fill this gap with our little virtual tour.

How to get to Uzhhorod

It is noteworthy that from Uzhgorod to Kyiv as much as 785 km, and this is more than the distance from Uzhgorod to nine others European capitals– Budapest (330 km), Bratislava (490 km), Warsaw (550 km), Vienna (555 km), Belgrade (585 km), Zagreb (670 km), Prague (720 km), Chisinau (750 km), Bucharest (780 km). Still, we have a rather big country by the standards of Europe ...

If you want to go to Uzhgorod by car, then you will probably drive along the Kyiv-Lviv-Chop highway. There are direct trains to Uzhgorod from Kharkiv, Lvov, Kyiv and Odessa, but all of them are slow and run like turtles. And if you really need to get from some other regional center, then this is generally a whole quest. Therefore, our friends, for example, in order to relax on Transcarpathian resort Glade, flew last summer from Zaporozhye to Uzhgorod by plane. Unfortunately, there are no direct flights, but even with a transfer in Kyiv, it turned out very quickly and not much more expensive than by train. The main thing is to catch a profitable ticket.

Unfortunately we don't have any flight data from UDJ at the moment.

We drove to Uzhgorod from Mukachevo, where we made a base for ourselves for three days to explore the surrounding sights. The road to Uzhgorod is close to ideal, which was very pleasing, and there were not very many cars. The mountains were left somewhere behind or a little to the side, so we mostly drove along the plain along picturesque fields, forests, and neat cozy villages under the gaze of storks.

This part of the Zakapratsky region is protected from the north high mountains from cold air currents. Due to this, in Uzhgorod, it is almost always 2-3 degrees warmer than in other cities of Ukraine located at the same latitude. Autumn and winter in Uzhgorod usually come a little later than in the neighboring regional centers, and in summer there are more hot days in the main city of Transcarpathia. Since ancient times, this climate has allowed the locals to grow very tasty vegetables and fruits, such as tomatoes and grapes.

Sights of Uzhgorod and surroundings

The main attractions of Uzhgorod are its old central streets, embankment of the river Uzh with blooming lindens and sakura, Uzhgorod castle and an open-air museum of folk architecture ... Unfortunately, sakura bloom only at the end of April, so we did not see them in the 35-degree July heat. But we were able to admire many other beauties of this ancient town.

But I would like to start from the outskirts of Uzhgorod. Nevitsky Castle is located 12 km northeast of the city, if you drive along the Slovak border. “Horns and legs” remained from him, since the castle itself was built in the 13th century, and for 300 years no one cares about it, so it looks accordingly. The castle has a visual 3D visualization, but it would be better if it had a good investor, as it breathes its last, and is about to fall on one of the tourists' heads (pah-pah-pah).

However, the views that open from the observation deck of the castle are really worth the risk and stand in silence for a couple of minutes.

River Uzh at the foot of the mountain on which Nevitsky Castle stands

And now let's take a walk around Uzhgorod itself and see what it can offer to a one-day tourist. I’ll make a reservation right away that in one day Uzhgorod can be examined very superficially, especially with one year old on the hottest day of the year. So any additions in the comments on the topic " what to see in Uzhgorod' are very welcome. Perhaps we missed something? I think we will go there again soon and try to catch up.

Below you can see how the pedestrian bridge across the Uzh River looks like, and from the side where I shot this shot, there are the most beautiful streets and the center of Uzhgorod.

The first impression of Uzhgorod is that everything is very neat, clean and beautiful. Most of cities are two- and three-story buildings from past eras. If it weren’t for modern electronic displays in bank windows, colorful shop signs and 21st century cars, one would think that we have moved 200 years ago. In the good sense of the word!

Although, there are pedestrian streets and a promenade, so at least the view from cars can rest a little. Contrary to my stereotypical expectations, Uzhgorod turned out to be completely different from or. It is almost impossible to compare it with any other Ukrainian city, except perhaps with Mukachevo. But it's still more provincial. So Uzhgorod really deserves special attention…

In the old city center there is a huge number of original cafes, coffee shops, pastry shops, souvenir shops - they are literally at every step. Gypsy beggars also caught my eye. In Mukachevo, we saw a lot of gypsies working - they mowed the grass on the Latoritsa embankment and rode horse-drawn carts about their business. In Uzhgorod, we saw them only with outstretched hands...

Uzhgorod castle

To visit Uzhgorod and not look into its castle is like not seeing the Eiffel Tower in Paris. The castle of Uzhgorod has thousand years of history, during which it was rebuilt several times to improve its defensive qualities. Only part of the foundation remained the same, but it is still impressive and ancient building. Hungarians, Austro-Hungarians, Turks, Transylvanians, Czechoslovaks, Soviets, Ukrainians alternately changed flags over this castle. But now, of course, it's not. impregnable fortress, and first of all, a well-preserved monument medieval architecture, and the main visiting card of Uzhgorod.

There is a beautiful garden on the territory of the castle, which saved us from the scorching July sun. There are also signs posted throughout interesting events that took place here in different historical eras. Walking around the castle grounds is a pleasure. You can also look at the courtyard and visit the local history museum and photo exhibitions located in the halls of the ancient castle.

At one of the points near the inner wall there is a kind of observation deck with stunning views of the city and the Museum of Architecture and Life adjacent to the castle, which is buried in greenery, being right under the open sky.

Transcarpathian Museum of Folk Architecture and Life in Uzhhorod

The entrance to the open-air museum is located on the same spot with the entrance to the castle of Uzhgorod. On the territory of the museum, the traditional dwellings of the peoples inhabiting the lowlands of Transcarpathia are recreated - these are Rusyns, Hungarians, Romanians, as well as mountainous areas- Lemkos and Hutsuls. In total, in a kind of "village" there are 7 estates and 6 residential buildings, a school, a water mill, a church with a bell tower, a smithy and a tavern. Also, by the way, there is a spring with drinking water. The Museum of Folk Architecture occupies a rather impressive area, and the buildings contain more than 14 thousand exhibits, so you can walk around this park-museum-village for quite some time. It's great when right in the center of the city there is an island of joy with so much greenery and flowers.

Old village or museum of architecture and life in Uzhgorod

Next to the museum hut and the beehives are ordinary modern residential buildings with satellite dishes… the intersection of eras…

For those who are interested, you can also see 3D panoramas of Uzhgorod - I really liked it, and even saw something new for myself for my next trips.

This is how we saw the westernmost, smallest, most gypsy and, paradoxically, at the same time the most European regional center of Ukraine, located right on the border with Slovakia. They say that Uzhgorod is very similar to one of the Balkan cities. What do you think? =)

Transcarpathia is one of the most beautiful places Ukraine, because it mixed different peoples with their traditions and culture, the regional center of which was Uzhgorod. This amazing city called "Little Paris" Transcarpathia, and since I can’t go to yet, I decided to visit his miniature.

What to see in Uzhgorod

Arriving at unfamiliar city You always want to make time for the most interesting things. Despite the fact that Uzhgorod is the smallest regional center of Ukraine, it will not be difficult to find historical, architectural and natural attractions, so there is no doubt that there will be something to see. When you arrive at this incredible beautiful town with a population of 115 thousand, you understand that Czechoslovakia and Hungary left their own unique imprint.

Museums of Uzhgorod

is one of the most visited museums in the city. Among other things historical heritage you can see Transcarpathian dwellings old building with traditional outbuildings. But it seems that the most expressive landmark dominating the open-air museum is The 22-meter three-domed Lemko Church of St. arch. Michael made of wood.

Thanks to the 4-tiered iconostasis, assembled from icons of the 17th-18th centuries, it was popular. The church attraction dates back to 1777. Although at first it was located in the Mukachevo region in the village of Shelestovo, already in 1928 - in Mukachevo itself, and in 1972 it was transferred to the Uzhgorod Museum, two years after its opening.

Not far from the Museum of Folk Architecture is striking Uzhgorod castle(I'll talk about it a little further), which houses local history museum. It has about 30 halls of various subjects and more than 110 thousand exhibits. All of them make up the most beautiful folk art, the spiritual culture of the villages, ethnography, original firearms and more. The department of nature will tell about the different animals and birds that are presented the largest collection of stuffed animals in Ukraine. The department of archeology liked the bronze items of the 13th-12th centuries BC. e., Department of Religion and Spiritual Culture - painted on the walls by the mid-19th century artist Ferdinand Vydra.

Monuments of Uzhhorod

I would like to pay attention to two monuments in the center of Uzhgorod, which especially attracted my attention. One of them is very beautiful at night. This is a monument to a lamplighter trying to fix a lantern on the wall. From the slab nailed next to it, it is clear that it is dedicated to Uncle Kolya, who for many decades took care of the city and did an excellent job.

The second is dedicated to Ignatius Roshkovich. It is presented as an artist with an easel, who made an invaluable contribution to the artistic wealth of Austria-Hungary. An exact copy of this monument can also be seen in Budapest.

Couldn't get past mini-sculptures of Uzhgorod. The first of them - the sculpture of St. Nicholas - was created in 2010. From that time everything started. At the moment there are about 25 of them. The author of the idea was the sculptor Mikhail Kolodko.

According to him, each of the bronze mini-statues tells local residents and guests of the city about outstanding people, interesting, worthy historical figures, characters or mythical heroes who had something to do with Uzhgorod or Transcarpathia. This is Peter the Great, and Harry Houdini, and John Lord, as well as many others. And thanks to a special guide, it will take only 3 hours to walk around all the mini-sculptures. Architecture of Uzhgorod

Liked it a lot Uzhgorod Castle is the most visited place in the city.

There are always a lot of people there. locals call it the heart of the city. And the truth is, it is. I was attracted by this wonderful masterpiece with its Romanesque architectural style. The building dating back to the middle of the 10th century functions today as a museum. The museum houses a local history museum with a huge number of different expositions. The cellars of the castle also keep history - "Torture Room" with exhibits recreated using drawings, medieval sketches, engravings and photographs. Stepping out into the yard, he turned his attention to 36 meter well, which once served as a secret exit during a siege.

Uzhgorod is the regional center of the Transcarpathian region, so there are many places of trade in the city, for example shopping mall Korzo. Its uniqueness lies in its architecture. A combination of modernity along with old 2-storey, and somewhere 3-storey buildings, decorated with stucco ornaments.

Religious buildings of Uzhgorod

The inhabitants of Uzhgorod are very pious people, so in the city you can see beautiful places of worship. Among them Holy Cross Cathedral, representing the independent Mukachevo diocese of the Greek Catholic Church. It was built in the first half of the 15th century in the Baroque style. The main façade has a triangular pediment with adjoining octagonal three-tier towers with chimes. The bell towers of the cathedral are made of stone and are installed on both towers.

Easy to spot among other buildings Goryanskaya rotunda of St. Anna.

It was attributed to the monuments of ancient Russian architecture of the XII century. It was made in the form of a hexagon with a wall thickness of 2-2.5 meters and at one time acted as a chapel of a fortified castle. Thanks to the frescoes of the 14th century, made by artists of the Giotto School of Art, popular in Italy, the walls look very beautiful. In addition, there are no analogues in terms of architectural parameters. Only two such rotundas are in Hungary.
