Tulip season in Holland: what to see?

Let me remind you that the tulip season in Holland is official. But now, finally, in order to enjoy the beauty, you don’t have to stand in line at Dam Square, but just go outside :) So, what will please flower lovers in Holland in April-May 2019?

In 2019, the fifth consecutive year will be held in Holland (many confuse it with the Flower Parade, but this is far from the same thing!). Tulip flower arrangements can be seen throughout April at 60 points in Amsterdam: near, EYE museum, at, and many other places.

In public places, you can enjoy the spectacle completely free of charge, and to enter museums you need to buy regular tickets ().

tulip mania

Tulip mania is another event that you should definitely pay attention to if you are in Holland this spring. Its dates coincide with the opening hours of the Keukenhof park (from March 21 to May 19, 2019). Tulip Mania is a cultural program dedicated to the history of the frenzy that began around tulips in the 17th century.

And if you are interested in how they are created flower arrangements for the parade, you can go to Sassenheim and watch this process ().

tulip fields

If you want to come back from the tulip fields with a bouquet, stop by Annemieke's pluktuin (Haarlemmerstraat 15a, Hillegom). There you can choose the tulips for your bouquet yourself (it costs only 0.20 euros per flower).

Flying over flower fields

Flying over Holland, be sure to look out the windows of the porthole. There you will find just an unforgettable sight (to admit, until I saw it with my own eyes, I always thought it was photoshop)! And for those who want to surf longer air space over the tulip fields, last year travel companies offered flights on a vintage 12-seat DC-3 Dakota aircraft from Schiphol towards Keukenhof. The cost of 30 minutes of pleasure is from 195 euros per person.

This year I can't find any similar offers yet. Whether I'm looking badly, or they start flying later, I don't know. But if you're interested, try googling.

update: in 2019 you have the opportunity fly over the flower fields in a helicopter!

The cost of the tour is 159 euros per person. It includes:

– Helicopter tour over the fields and the Dutch coast
– bike rental for the whole day
- Entrance ticket to the Keukenhof park
- bus ticket to the park and back

Helicopter tours are held just four days for the entire season: April 6, 13, 20 and 27, 2019. Limited number of seats. You can clarify the program and book a tour.

Well, the main event of spring in Holland is, of course, Keukenhof. If you're going to the park this year, let's go.

Personally, I plan to go to the park on the 20th of April. In the meantime, we, together with the project “Inside Man in Amsterdam”, are watching how the park blossoms day by day.

The program for the celebration of the Day of the King of the Netherlands in 2019. Where you need to be to see the Flower Parade and all the fun on the king's birthday.

Holland - amazing country. For more than 60 years, every year, it celebrates the birthdays of its rulers on a special scale. At this time, the country is filled with tourists who dream of joining the festivities. There really is something to see here. These are spontaneous sales, carnivals, music festivals and, of course, an unforgettable flower parade. Best time for holidays in - the end of April and the beginning of May. During this period, the hotels of large Dutch cities were filled and redeemed in advance. travel vouchers. The popularity of this time is understandable - it falls on the celebration of the birthday of the king.

King's Day: historical background

King's Day is the biggest holiday in the Netherlands. It is celebrated on April 27, but in different times the date has changed. Why is there a date, even the name of the celebration had several interpretations.

The history of mass festivities in the Netherlands, dedicated to the person who is in power, originates in 1885. Then the Liberal Party initiated the National Unity Festival, which coincided with the birthday of Princess Wilhelmina. After the princess was crowned, the festival was renamed Queen's Day, continuing to celebrate it on August 31st. Under Queen Julian, the festivities were postponed to April 30, and already her daughter, Beatrix, decided not to associate the festival with her birthday.

Deciding not to postpone everyone’s favorite holiday from mid-spring to winter (it was during this period that her own birthday fell), Beatrix not only honored the memory of her mother, but also won the love of her fellow citizens: after all, the celebrations in April cannot be compared with those in January - on fresh air so don't roam!

In 2013, Beatrix Wilhelmina Armgard abdicated in favor of her son. Since then, Willem-Alexander, who took the crown and scepter from his mother, has been the king of the Netherlands. Queen's Day naturally ceased to exist. But as expected, King's Day appeared, which miraculously turned out to be on April 27!

So, since 2014, the Dutch, members of the royal family and numerous tourists hurrying to be in the Hague and other cities of the Netherlands in the spring, no less joyfully celebrate the Day of the King of the Netherlands.

In the first year of his reign, Willem-Alexander's birthday fell on a Sunday, so it was decided to hold the festivities the day before - April 26th. In subsequent years, including in the 2019 season, the King's Birthday will be celebrated on April 27 (as noted in the monarch's passport).

Birthday of the King of the Netherlands 2019

What is Holland at this time? It is an uninterrupted orange-colored river - in honor of royal house. It constantly seethes and shimmers with all possible shades of this color.

The first celebration of the Day of the KING of the Netherlands in 2014

We hasten to assure travelers that on April 27, 2019, just like in previous years, Amsterdam will be full of orange. Residents of the capital and other cities of the country, as well as visitors on King's Day, dress in orange robes, wear orange-colored crowns to honor the honor of the representatives of the royal house of Orange-Nassau. The streets of cities on the eve of the celebration are decorated with flags, balls of the same color. Some manufacturers even produce products in orange packages.

There are so many people in Amsterdam that day that you literally have to squeeze through the crowd working with your elbows. No matter which alley you look in, music sounds everywhere, rides are placed, slot machines, people enjoy life, drink and eat traditional fast food - salted herring.

However, mass fun begins the night before. The night that precedes the Day of the King of the Netherlands is also called "royal" - Koninginnenacht. The Great Music Festival takes place in The Hague at night, so tourists are advised to go there first.

Spring is the most fertile time in the Netherlands. In addition to the birthday of the ruler, it opens the doors and the tulip park.

Where to stay during the holidays

Hotels in Amsterdam for the dates of the King's birthday are booked six months in advance. The Germans are especially pedantic in this case - they simply incredibly know what they will do in 6, or even all 12 months. Our compatriots are not threatened with such confidence in the future, so we will not insist, but we still highly recommend that you take care of the issue of housing in Amsterdam in advance. Especially if you have long dreamed of visiting the king's holiday (and at the same time the Keukenhof).

There is a chance to find an inexpensive but well-located hotel in the capital (either the center or the proximity of one of the metro/airport stations). But the closer the celebration, the more tiny it becomes.

#1. Multatuli Hotel

Quality hotel in the city center, across the street from central station. If your plans include excursions around the country (for example, Keukenhof), it will be convenient. This is a classic townhouse where you will definitely feel like you are in Amsterdam.

#2. City Hotel Amsterdam

The main pluses are the location and the price adequate for the center. The station and Dam Square are 500 meters away. We add that the staff at the hotel is excellent, the rooms are clean, after a fresh renovation. Parking and wi-fi available. Celebrations in honor of King's Day - in full view!

#3. Hotel Nes

Three-star hotel with 39 rooms in a traditional building for Amsterdam. on one of the channels. From here you will see the King's Birthday celebration in detail! The rooms are small but well thought out; delicious breakfasts, parking and fast wi-fi.

#4. MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam City West

Standard room at MEININGER Hotel Amsterdam City West

Located in an industrial area, 10 km from. Comfortable nearby road junction. budget hotel(new, with a cool renovation) is suitable for visiting Amsterdam at any time.

#5. West Side Inn Amsterdam

Cheap hotel in the west of Amsterdam, close to the ring road. But, interestingly, from Schiphol Airport to the city center - 20 minutes by public transport. Checked! There is parking and family rooms.

#6. Hans Brinker Hostel Amsterdam

Hostel in the center of Amsterdam (near Leidseplein). The Prinsengracht tram stop is nearby, from where you can quickly get to the railway station and be able to go around the whole of Holland! There are both shared and private rooms. Each has a shower room and lockers.

Fairs and sales

Another feature of this day is spontaneous fairs. The fact is that there is a custom at this time to get rid of unnecessary (or boring) rubbish. Therefore, walking along the streets, you can see a stream of discarded books and clothes. More enterprising people have time to collect them and create a sale. It will be possible to pay only in cash, so you need to take care of the presence of small things in your pockets in advance. After all, sometimes you can find quite decent products. This real paradise for lovers of antiques and tourists who get the opportunity to purchase relatively inexpensive, but rare and memorabilia.

It will not be possible to walk around the museums on the King's birthday. After all, the holiday has a national scale, and most of them simply do not work.

Flower parade in the Netherlands 2019

At the end of April, another exciting event takes place in the Netherlands - the Flower Parade. It is no secret that the Dutch are in love with flowers and grow them everywhere. Amazing beauty tulips from the Netherlands amaze with the diversity of the inhabitants of the whole world. Huge figures made of flowers are presented at the parade.

Flower parade starts in small towns in Holland

From Aalsmeer to Amsterdam, there are locals who hold in their hands specially purchased or, more often, grown on their own plots and balconies, flowering plants. After the main spectacle, flower parades are held throughout the state for another week. The action usually involves 10,000 people, and in total 100 million flowers are presented at the festival.

The 2019 season will be no exception. The Bloemencorso flower parade will take place on 23-24 April. A sample parade plan would look like this:

  • The opening will take place on the evening of April 22 at the Nordwijkerhout ( small town near Keukenhof);
  • In the morning of the next day (at 9-30) a flower procession will begin, which will be represented by 20 wagons, 30 cars and an orchestra. Throughout the parade, it will be accompanied by musical and dance ensembles;
  • The wagons will move at the speed of a turtle, allowing you to enjoy the sight of each flower, its aroma;
  • By 4 p.m., the procession will enter Corso Boulevard in the Keukenhof park. There will probably be a little pandemonium, so it's best to come to the end of the action;
  • At 21-00 the sky will light up with colorful flashes from fireworks. This spectacle will not yield to the neighboring flowers in scale, brightness and beauty.

The cost of the excursion to the flower parade in the Netherlands 2019 (organization convenient places, coordination of the route and much more) will be from 115 to 130 dollars.

Where and when is it better to be on King's Day

The celebration itself begins in the evening. In 2019, on the Day of the King of the Netherlands, it is best to be in The Hague, before royal palace. There will pass music Festival. Closer to dawn, the procession will “move” to Amsterdam - this is the next item on the holiday program. The streets will fill with a carnival procession adorned with many balloons(the most popular is an orange crown of balloons), bright outfits and good mood.

The canals of Amsterdam are turning into a single orange stream!

Festivities in Amsterdam in honor of the king

The Netherlands is in a frenzy. People laugh, hug and cry. Tourists are treated to sandwiches with herring, which in this country are considered the best delicacy. The most magnificent festivities usually take place in Amsterdam on April 27, in the afternoon:

  • It is interesting in the areas of Valen and Jordan, on New Market Square;
  • Don't get bored at the Dam Square, where on the King's Day the largest and noisiest fair of the capital unfolds;
  • For guests of Amsterdam who love music, we recommend Leidseplein and Museumplein, where free concerts are held;
  • Wandelpark is in full swing on this day. There they sing and dance, trying to show everyone their beautiful costumes, prepared especially for the celebration of the King's birthday. If you look from above, it will seem that a large orange river has flooded into the park, which rages and makes noise, trying to break out of its banks;
  • For those who love fairs, trips to Haarlem, Rotterdam and The Hague can be recommended. Above, we mentioned that on the evening of April 26, 2018, the Life I Live Festival will begin in The Hague.

Travel tips for tourists

The end of April in the Netherlands is a whole range of activities that the Dutch and some tourists are waiting for whole year. To ensure that the trip goes smoothly, take care of the cheap tickets in Amsterdam and hotel availability. Remember that on the King's Birthday at 9 a.m., surface urban transport stops, so it is better to use river vehicles.

The king's wife greets people on her husband's birthday

Wear simple and comfortable clothes so you don't have to worry about keeping them safe. You will certainly want to sit on the bridge, lie on one of the lawns, eat a herring sandwich - all this does little to cleanliness and “starching”. If possible, be sure to add an orange element to the image: a T-shirt, a cap, glasses, a scarf, a bag - something that will certainly betray your involvement in the event.

Don't forget that Holland is the only European country where light forms of drugs are legalized. Try to treat everything you see philosophically with a certain amount of indifference. Indeed, after a couple of hours it becomes obvious why these hundreds and thousands of young people respect the Day of the King of the Netherlands, either idly lounging on barges, or whistling and greeting passers-by.

They say that there is no place for children at such events. Here we will not agree - the main thing is to hold your child by the hand. It won't take long to get lost in such a crowd, there are really a lot of people!

In general, the event is bright, memorable, many people like it more than the legendary one. The last one is definitely not a children's holiday, but it is quite possible to get out to the Parade of Flowers and some kind of fair with the kids - they will certainly be delighted with the orange extravaganza.
