Since Egypt is traveled and traveled far and wide, we decided to go to the same Red Sea in Jordan, because we really wanted to visit Petra as a place in third position in the lists of the 100 most interesting objects in the world. We contacted Ankhar from the Jordanian club without any problems and booked a trip just on the fly, and for some reason it didn’t even occur to me to find out something else somewhere (for which we paid the price…).

The first thing that caught my eye upon arrival was a whole group of middle-aged, but friendly and Russian-speaking guides-Jordanians who met their groups (not us), one of them, having learned that we already had a visa, showed where to go next and where we can wait for our Sameer. By the way, they changed the money immediately at the airport upon arrival and, unlike the information in the Anhar guidebook, the fee was 1 dinar from every hundred, and not just 1 - from the entire amount. Then they found our Samir, communicated only in English, for some reason in the Jordanian club the Russian language is not held in high esteem…

We moved to Petra already in the dark, probably. Therefore, the journey took 2, not 3 hours. When we drove up to Petra, the stars had already poured out and, in combination with cat phones on the road, it was a breathtaking sight. In the morning we went to Petra. From the entrance of the hotel to the entrance to the reserve about three minutes. A ticket for one day now costs 21 dinars. We were very lucky with the weather - it was partly cloudy and the temperature was about 12-14 degrees. Therefore, “in the cold” we went all the way to the Monastery, though we didn’t climb the Mount of Sacrifice, but with my broken legs it’s forgivable.

Beauty, of course, is unprecedented, incomparable, bewitching, justifying everything. Bedouin children and wives are friendly, chirping in English, not very annoying, which cannot be said about dzhigits on horseback and donkeys. We visited both museums. The exhibits are few, but interesting. In the old museum, they signed up in the visitor's book, on the previous three sheets, there were no Russian surnames, probably out of season. And in the new museum, on the mountain, they were very friendly received by the old caretaker, who gave him tea and showed amazing views, and introduced him to his house, which is located there, on the mountain in three caves - he sleeps in one, in the other - eats, and the third - a toilet. There is also a nice little garden, a few palm trees. It's funny... On the way back, when we said goodbye to the pink Treasury, we stood with our backs to Petra, who entered the ancient city of the Nabataeans for the first time from the gorge, and all the time we hear with aspiration "May Got", "Mon Die". Indeed - "Oh my God!". Beauty to be seen!!!

The next day in the morning we left for Aqaba, the road was beautiful, near Petra (in fact, now the town is called Wadi Mouss) viewing platforms, well and wisely equipped. After some time, we reached the multi-colored desert of Wami Ram, transferred to a jeep (only the two of us and the Bedouin driver) and for two hours did not particularly circle around the sands, which are really lilac, and pink, and yellow, and orange, and even gently green. Well, here is the sea! Hooray!!! But it wasn't there. In general, it is warm - up to 28 degrees air, 20-22 degrees water, but the wind is something. Plus, one more frustration - the corals on the beach are cut off, real thickets are somewhere in the area of ​​\u200b\u200bthe port and the royal diving club. After the start of the high season - from March 14, yachts went there every day, 15 dinars a trip. Once we tried not to bring back the masks and fins without wearing them, we had zero impressions. The corals are inanimate, there are few fish, and there is still a lot of garbage - bags, tins, a lot of cigarette butts, etc. Interestingly, the Jordanians themselves litter. With us on the yacht were Austrians, French and Arabs, after dinner the Jordanians threw all the garbage overboard. Why is unclear. By the way, they smoke a lot, everywhere and everything, even aunts in hijabs (Muslim headscarves) and pregnant women (and this is every second Jordanian). That is, it is IMPOSSIBLE to rest on the Red Sea, as in Egypt. For divers, there are, of course, interesting places - a tank and a sunken ship, but the beauty of the sea, which we stared at in Sharm, is not, is not, and is not.

We ourselves bought tickets at the JETT bus station (a room right next to Movenpick without any sign) the day before departure, flights at 7-00, 9-00 and 11-00, then two more in the afternoon, no evening. The ticket costs 4.30 dinars. The buses are comfortable, the ride takes 4 hours, but without any tension at all. The photo of me with tea bags in my hands is by no means staged. Living in Israel, in the late nineties and early 2000s, we traveled to the Jordanian capital Amman almost every month. Regular bus it takes 3 hours and after working a working week, we went to Jordan on Friday evening and then returned home on Saturday. In Amman, we went to our favorite restaurants, walked around the old city and its new part - Shmeisani, drank delicious tea with baklava, indulged in chic hummus and tahina. And they also bought excellent and inexpensive coffee, tea, laban, and even up to the beautiful Syrian (pre-war) knitwear. Stayed for pennies good hotels, and sometimes they rented a car and drove to the mountains, or vice versa to the desert. It was a good time, we loved Jordan. And then things got worse.

The feeling that Jordan began to deteriorate rapidly with the outbreak of war in neighboring Syria. Refugees poured in, today amounting to almost a million people, and this is for Jordan, whose own population barely exceeds 5 million. Around the same period, Jordanians suddenly raised the cost of a visa at the border from 10 dinars ($14) to 20 dinars, and then all 40 dinars ($60). They introduced a strange exit tax for those who spent less than 2 days in the country and at first it was 4 dinars, and then it became 8 and 10, depending on the border crossing. Together with the Israeli border tax (also grown in last years), just crossing the border began to cost about 100 (one hundred!) Dollars. This is before you actually left the border terminal.

As if this is not enough, the Jordanians have stopped letting tourists through the most popular border crossing in the south of the country, in the Arava desert, between Aqaba and Israeli Eilat. Now there only in the composition organized group and no more. What kind of group are we? We just take a walk, eat, buy all sorts of things and back. Previously, this transition was also convenient because it did not require a visa. For there is a free trade zone and that's it border crossings in Aqaba - free, whether sea ​​port for ferries from Egypt, Aqaba airport and crossing to Saudi Arabia. Now, not only is a visa required there at a price of $ 60, but also only as part of an unnecessary group.

But this was not the end of the matter. Jordan itself, I think, due to the influx of refugees from Syria and Iraq, has ceased to be calm and hospitable. Firstly, hotel prices soared, and this is understandable, because the richer refugees occupied all budget hotels, and secondly, the Jordanians themselves became somewhat embittered and previously unknown crooks and swindlers became more active.

We continued to love Jordan and parted with our hard-earned people at the border with a heavy heart, imagining how in a couple of hours we would be overeating hummus in Amman. But each time the enthusiasm became less and less. The apogee was a depressing situation that happened to me at the Amman airport in October 2014. I was returning on a Riyal Jordanian flight from Cairo to Tel Aviv. Between flights, I specifically took more time, about 18 hours, to come to the city and take a walk. Moreover, when transiting, you do not need to buy a visa, with the condition that you fly away no later than 24 hours later. Nothing foreshadowed trouble.

And suddenly, mother-peremat!

And there I was dumbfounded, they say, a free visa is only for those who are ready to spend the night in an expensive airport hotel. What kind of nonsense? No persuasion or negotiation helps, they refuse to issue a paper to the border guards about transit and say - if you don't want to spend the night in our hotel - go pay 60 dollars for a visa and go wherever you want, and then the next day you will pay another 12 dollars exit tax, because you less than two days in the country. I will add that "their" hotel costs $140 per night. It is obvious that we are talking about wiring and clearly the airport employees receive some kind of kickback from the hotel for not letting transit people into the city. A whole crowd gathered for the people, but they are clearly poorly versed in the laws and meekly agreed to pay for an expensive hotel imposed by airport employees.

In recent years, as I have already said, Jordan has generally become known for small but annoying tricks in relation to tourists. I once told how in this country they fool people at the border and force them to take a taxi to Amman from the land border, claiming that the police forbid traveling by bus. The police, of course, will not let you out of the border terminal without a taxi. Mafia. Or pay a taxi, or the police, to forget that "tourists are not allowed to ride the bus."
