In the photo, the manor house of the Arseniev estate is the main building and center State Museum Mikhail Lermontov in the village of Lermontovo, until 1917 called Tarkhany, in the estate of the poet's grandmother.

The poet's childhood and adolescence passed in Tarkhany, and here he spent half of his life that ended so quickly. His ashes are buried in the family chapel-tomb, as well as the graves of his mother, grandfather and grandmother, and next to the chapel is the grave of the poet's father. At present, the Tarkhany Museum-Reserve is located in the village, where the life of the first half of the 19th century is recreated. The museum complex includes a landowner's estate, churches, restored servants' houses. On the territory of the estate there are ponds, gardens, parks with centuries-old lindens and elms.

Story

The poet's maternal grandfather, Mikhail Arseniev (1768-1810), served as a guard lieutenant, retired and married Elizaveta Stolypina (1773-1845), who came from the Stolypin family, among whom were senators, generals and governors. After the wedding in 1794, the young people bought, as everyone was told, "almost for nothing" from the Privy Councilor Ivan Naryshkin, the village of Tarkhany in the then Penza province.

The estate was acquired together with the serfs, whom the new owners, for reasons of profit, transferred from dues to corvée: the peasants worked for three days for themselves, three days for the landlords. As of 1817, there were 496 male serfs on the estate, in 1845 - 601.

The total area of land in the estate at the time of purchase was 44.2 km2. Eastern part occupied oak groves, where the small river Miloraika (now Mararaika) originated. Along its entire course, ponds were arranged that surrounded the estate from three sides: Bolshoi (blocked by a dam), Middle and Upper, or Barsky. On east coast Miloraika long ago laid out two gardens - Middle and Far with decorative plots, and on the western - Round, connected by a linden alley with an oak grove.

In 1795, the only daughter of the owners of Tarkhan, Maria, was born. In 1810, Mikhail Vasilyevich died: he committed suicide, which was preceded by an extremely unpleasant story with his betrayal of his wife. He was buried in the family crypt in Tarkhany.

Yuri Lermontov lived in the estate next to the Arsenyevs, visited them. Maria Mikhailovna married him in 1814: a magnificent wedding took place in Tarkhany, but her grandmother did not approve of the marriage with the poor captain. After the wedding, they lived in Tarkhany, although the family life of their parents did not work out. The poet's mother died of consumption in 1817 and was buried in the estate.

In the same year, Arsenyeva sold the old manor house for scrap, and in its place in 1820 she erected a small, Empire-style, stone church of Mary of Egypt in memory of her daughter. For herself and her grandson, she set up a one-story wooden house in the garden with a mezzanine, balconies and a porch from the main entrance.

The father of the future poet went to his estate Kropotovo in the Tula province, and left his son to be raised by his grandmother according to the condition set by her in her will. Yuri Lermontov died in 1831. In 1974, his ashes were transferred to Tarkhany and reburied next to the Church of Michael the Archangel.

Mikhail Lermontov lived in Tarkhany from 1815 to 1827. Arsenyeva spared no expense for the upbringing and education of Lermontov, constantly took care of his health, after her grandson was arrested for poetry and a duel, she fussed about forgiveness before the tsar.

The news of Mikhail's death caught Arsenyeva in St. Petersburg, and at the end of August 1841 she returned to Tarkhany. In 1842, she secured the transfer of the body from Pyatigorsk to Tarkhany. After the reburial of Lermontov in a lead coffin at the family cemetery, a chapel was erected at the behest of Arsenyeva. Four years after the death of her grandson, in 1845, she also died and was buried in the family crypt, where her grandson is.

In the estate, buildings have been restored and maintained in proper condition, located in the same way as during the life of the poet. Pictured is the housekeeper's house.

Tarkhan's impressions and childhood memories are reflected in many of the poet's works.

According to the will of Elizaveta Arsenyeva, in 1845 the Tarkhans went to her relatives along the line of the Stolypins. None of them lived in Tarkhany. The indifferent attitude of the owners of the estate to the memory of the poet and the frequent change of managers affected the state of the estate.

The Soviet government decided to restore order in Tarkhany. In 1917 the village was renamed Lermontovo, and in 1918 the People's Commissar of Education Lunacharsky instructed to take the estate under protection. In October of the same year, the estate was declared the property of the Soviet state. But only in 1934, when the estate was rather dilapidated and in a terrible state, it was declared a reserve.

In 1939, the Lermontov Museum was opened in the repaired house of the poet, which in 1944 was transformed into a museum-estate. A significant contribution to the creation of the museum was made by its founder and first director Alexander Khramov (1901-1958).

In 1966, a protective zone of the museum was established within a radius of up to 5 km from its borders. And in 1969, on the basis of the museum-estate, the State Lermontov Museum-Reserve "Tarkhany" was created.

The manor's house was restored taking into account all known documents and analysis of similar buildings of the first quarter of the 19th century. Now the house houses an exposition that reveals the biographical and creative ties of the poet with the Tarkhans, including the authentic things of the poet and his entourage, his drawings.

Visitors have access to the hall, living room, dining room, rooms: figurative, maiden, tea room, classroom, the poet and his grandmother.

Next to the manor house stands the one-domed church of Mary of Egypt, which has retained its architecture and was erected by the owner of the estate in memory of her daughter. The church remained active until 1925. According to the surviving documents, an inventory of church property and a photograph of the iconostasis of 1923, the original interior of the church was restored: an oak iconostasis with gilding, Tarkhan icons.

Next to the manor house there are two manor buildings where the yard peasants lived: the house of the key keeper and the clerk, as well as the people's hut. It is noteworthy that the buildings were restored on the foundations of the Lermontov era, they contain household utensils and materials. archaeological sites, telling about the history of settlement and development of lands that were part of the estate of Elizaveta Arsenyeva. As contemporaries recalled, the mummers came every evening to the manor's quarters at Svyatki, sang and danced, amusing the little master, and "on Trinity and Semik they went into the forest with all the households, and Mikhail Yuryevich was ahead of everyone."

In the center of the village there are three buildings of the 19th century: the church of Michael the Archangel, a chapel and a gatehouse. All are surrounded by a brick fence, restored in 1967 and reconstructed in 2004. The construction of the church began in 1826, and in 1836 the poet saw this church still unfinished when he spent his first officer's vacation in Tarkhany. For a long time the church was active,

until in 1963 the church building and the gatehouse became the property of the museum. But since 1992, the village church has been reopened to parishioners.

Obviously, it was in the Church of Michael the Archangel on April 21, 1842 for two days that the coffin with the body of the poet delivered from Pyatigorsk was installed. On April 23, 1842, the burial took place. The lines written by him at the age of sixteen turned out to be prophetic: “There is a place where I will rest when my ashes, mixed with the earth, leave their former appearance forever.”

In 1997, the State Lermontov Museum-Reserve "Tarkhany" was included in the State Code of Especially Valuable Objects cultural heritage peoples of the Russian Federation.

Curious facts

The real value of the estate purchased from Naryshkin actually amounted to 58 thousand rubles: a huge amount for those times, but the estate was worth it. The money was taken from the dowry of Elizaveta Alekseevna, the poet's grandmother, whose family of Stolypins was known not only for their long history but also wealth. The estate itself was also recorded on it.

Of the several hundred serfs in Tarkhany, Maria Lermontova owned 16 male souls. After her early death, they were inherited by the poet himself. Of these, his personal servants were recruited. Some were set free by him. The rest of the serfs belonged to his grandmother Elizaveta Arsenyeva, whom she did not subject to corporal punishment, but managed quite subtly and humiliatingly: she shaved half the head of a delinquent peasant or cut off a braid from a girl.

Since ancient times, the inhabitants of Tarkhan were engaged in arable farming, furrier trade, bought honey, lard, wool and traded all this at fairs. Also, the peasants bought the skins of domestic animals, dressed them and sold them far beyond the borders of their district. Hence the name of the village: the buyers who traveled around the villages were called tarkhans. The name Tarkhany has been known since 1805, although the old names of the village - Nikolskoye and Yakovlevskoye - were still in use for some time.

After the death of his young wife, the father of the future poet no longer came to Tarkhany: he could not stand his mother-in-law. Lermontov later expressed his feelings for his father in the poems “The Terrible Fate of Father and Son”, “Epitaph” (“Forgive me! Will we see you again?”).

At first, the Soviet government only verbally showed concern for the Tarkhans. In 1925, the Lermontov (!) state farm was formed here, and the estate with all the property was leased to the Lermontov horse-breeding (!) partnership "Lermontov trotter" (!). In a short time, almost all outbuildings were demolished, and an office was located in the manor house. Then the lower floor was used to store grain, and the upper one (the mezzanine where the poet lived) was used to keep poultry.

The estate maintains economic traditions of the 19th century. The apiary produces honey, on average - 1200 kg per year. Gardens bring a crop of apples, cherries, plums, raspberries. Fish live in ponds. Vegetables are grown, including garlic, cabbage, onions, cucumbers, and tomatoes. Works windmill grinding Tarkhan grain. Flowers are grown in the greenhouse. A medicinal garden has been organized, where mint, lemon balm, lavender, rhubarb, sage, anise, savory, valerian are cultivated. The stable contains Bashkir, Russian Trotter, Terek, Traksnen, Arabian and Shetland pony breeds.

In the Church of St. Mary of Egypt there is a handwritten book of the Church of St. Nicholas the Wonderworker, in which in the spring of 1815 Lermontov was first mentioned among the parishioners at the age of six months, and in 1821 seven-year-old Lermontov was recorded several times as a godfather in the families of serf grandmothers.

Namely, there was the estate of the Arsenyevs Mikhail Vasilyevich and Elizaveta Alekseevna, became the place where the greatest Russian poet Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov spent his childhood and youth. This place became the cradle of the great poet. Whatever the life of the poet throws, he always recalled with trepidation his homeland - the land that raised him and on which he spent almost half of his life. Here Mikhail Yuryevich experienced his first love languor, here he found his last refuge. The ashes of a genius rest in the family crypt, and a chapel rises above the building itself.

First exposition complex

The Tarkhany Museum (Penza region), the photo of which is presented in our article, consists of three exposition complexes.

The structure of the first includes the manor's house. It was built after the death of Lermontov's mother, Maria Mikhailovna. By the way, she was the only daughter of Elizabeth Alekseevna. So, in 1818 this estate was erected. In the late 90s of the last century, the house underwent reconstruction. The masters completely recreated the environment that emphasizes the influence of the estate culture on the development of the poet's personality. It was here that the little boy Misha had to go through a series of joyful and sad events: the death of his mother, parting with his father, acquaintance with the basics of art and science, writing the first lines of poetry, the first piano lessons. Mikhail Lermontov wanted his ashes to be buried only in Tarkhany. This complex contains unique items: a cigarette, a pipe, a casket and other personal belongings of the poet; items that belonged to his grandmother and mother (holiday handkerchiefs and the like). Here are some artwork genius.

Not far from the manor house is the one-domed manor church of Mary of Egypt. This monument has completely preserved its architecture and proved to be timeless. The church is designed in the Empire style. She built it in honor of her daughter. The building operated until the mid-20s of the last century, and today it is simply consecrated and is a monument to bygone days.

Second exposition complex

The second part of the exposition of the museum "Tarkhany" of the Penza region is the Church of the Archangel Michael. This architectural complex located in the central part of the village. It was built during the lifetime of Mikhail Lermontov's grandmother. The construction of the church began in 1826. In 1836, in winter, the poet spent his first officer's holidays at the estate. Then he watched the still unfinished church.

Third exposition complex

Apaliha. At a distance of three kilometers to the south-western part of the village of Tarkhany is the estate of the “dear aunt”, which belonged to M. A. Shan-Girey-Apalikhe, the poet’s aunt. The modern estate is a chic park with centuries-old linden trees, the crowns of which are still visible from afar. All conditions are created here for a person to merge with nature, to feel it with all his soul. Only here you can admire the transparent springs, listen to the whisper of hundred-year-old trees. Since the late 30s of the twentieth century, the Tarkhany estate has turned into a museum, and since 1969 it has acquired the status of a reserve.

Grave of Mikhail Yurievich Lermontov

The estate "Tarkhany" (now Lermontovo) is the resting place of the soul and body of the great poet. Initially, his ashes were buried in Pyatigorsk, but a year after the burial they were transferred to Lermontovo. There, next to the grave of his mother, in the chapel, the son found his eternal home. A monument made of black marble was erected over the grave of a genius. The inscription “Mikhailo Yuryevich Lermontov. 1814-1841". Near the chapel, an enormous oak has grown. After the funeral of the poet, his grandmother ordered to dig several trees in the forest and plant them in front of the chapel building, but of the total number of dug out oaks, only one took root.

The village of Tarkhany in the Penza region inspired Mikhail Yuryevich to create such unsurpassed masterpieces as "Circassians" and "Tambov Treasurer". In the same place, the poem "The Dying Gladiator" and the drama "Two Brothers" saw the light. "Borodino", a notorious poem, was composed on the basis of memories of the Tarkhans.

At the beginning of July of each year, the Tarkhany Museum of the Penza Region gathers lovers of the poet's work from all over the state at the All-Russian Lermontov Festival. As part of this event, the organizers award the participants with the Lermontov Literary Prize and hold a musical concert where romances are performed. On the day of the poet's memory, July 27, flowers are laid on his grave.

This year, the estate "Tarkhany", the Lermontov Museum in particular, celebrated 75 years since its foundation. In honor of this event, the reserve for the first time opened its depository for guests. Here are collected things belonging to the Lermontov family, which were not included in the main exhibition.

Also, by this date, peasant houses, which are located on the territory of the museum, were restored. A new exhibition called "Stages shortcut". It presents illustrations for Lermontov's works, made by such famous artists as K. Korovin, M. Vrubel and I. Repin.

Arsenyeva's only daughter, Maria Mikhailovna Lermontova (the poet's mother). In 1999, the house was restored, taking into account the analysis of similar buildings of the early 19th century and all the surviving documents on the house. The recreated atmosphere of everyday life fully emphasizes the role of the estate culture in shaping Lermontov's personality. This house became the place where little Misha Lermontov survived the death of his mother, separation from his father, began to learn the basics of science and art, picked up a pencil for the first time, for the first time his fingers touched the piano keys. And thinking about life and death, he dreamed of being buried in Tarkhany. Here are the unique exhibits of the museum: the poet's personal belongings (pipe, cigarette box, casket, part of the handle from a scimitar), things of his mother and grandmother (toilet table, ceremonial handkerchiefs), the icon of the 17th century "The Savior Not Made by Hands", one of the most big works Lermontov-artist "Caucasian view near the village of Sioni", his pencil drawings.

The one-dome building of the manor church of Mary of Egypt rises next to the manor house. This monument was not subject to the destructive influence of time, retaining its architecture. This is a slender empire building erected by the owner of the estate E.A. Arsenyeva (grandmother of M.Yu. Lermontov) as a tribute to the memory of her daughter. The church, which operated until 1925, is currently consecrated. On the walls of the temple there are memorial icons from the Tarkhan churches of the late 18th - early 19th centuries, here is the composition "But we have a sacred feeling ...". The image of the temple of that time was fully recreated, thanks to the elements of church decoration, church utensils. Books are very important. Registers of births, a work of Russian church literature by Cheti-Minei for September 1754.

The foundation of the estate was laid in the bend of the ravine formed by the river Mararaika, in accordance with all the rules of estate construction. A cascade of ponds was created: Upper, or Barsky Pond, Lower and Middle. Along the dam of the Sredny Pond, going to a high hill, a special spectacle opens - the place of the future poet's war games: "trench". The oak grove, connecting with the Round Garden, forms a single green massif. The far garden is a square, where eight alleys of lindens and elms converge in the center, where a wooden arbor is located. By western slope alleys of the park run in terraces from the manor house. Groves, ponds and a field frame a small well-groomed park, emphasizing its beauty and grandeur.

The second compositional complex includes the Church of Michael the Archangel. Historically, the architectural complex of the reserve in the center of the village was formed under the grandmother of Lermontov E.A. Arsenyeva. The construction of the Church of Michael the Archangel began in 1826. In the winter of 1836, while spending his first officer's leave in Tarkhany, M.Yu. Lermontov saw this church still unfinished.

The third complex is the Apalikha estate. To the south-west of Tarkhan, at a distance of three kilometers, is the estate of "dear aunt" M.A. Shan Giray - Apaliha. Today, the estate is a luxurious park, the crowns of centuries-old linden trees are visible from afar. A steppe stream covered with water lilies, a clean, transparent park spring, the noise of centuries-old trees - attract and fascinate with their mystery and poetry, give a feeling of belonging to the secrets and wonders of nature

Every year, thousands of visitors come to Tarkhany - the country of childhood, the country of Lermontov's poetry. They strive here to enjoy the source of his poetry, that exciting, soul-touching feeling of touching a miracle. After all, it was life in Tarkhany that gave the future poet a sense of freedom, involvement in the traditions of his ancestors, unity with nature. And in terms of the strength of feelings and energy, the strength of reality, the expressiveness of the word, the courage of thought, M.Yu. Lermontov's poetry is unique and inimitable.

The third complex is the Apalikha estate. To the south-west of Tarkhan, at a distance of three kilometers, is the estate of "dear aunt" M.A. Shan Giray - Apaliha.
