North Cape - the northern peak of mainland Europe

All about the North Cape: where to stay and how to get to the North Cape. Why go and what to see. Photos, reviews, North Cape on the map and much more.

The northernmost point in Europe is the North Cape in Norway. From May 31 to July 31, the sun does not set beyond the Arctic Circle day or night, and romantic tourists who are in love with beauty Scandinavian country, carry out raids in tourist complex on the mountain. Cape North Cape - the phrase is redundant, because translated from Norwegian Nordkapp (or North Cape - English) means - Northern Cape. Therefore, the name "North Cape" is self-sufficient, therefore, in this article, we omit the prefix "cape" in the future.

Cape North Cape on the map of Norway

What is the North Cape today

construction tourist center on the North Cape, which has become a cult, goes underground to a depth of several floors - here, as always, the Norwegians' concern for the surrounding landscapes was manifested. Due to the warm waters of the Gulf Stream washing the Scandinavian coast, the Norwegian Sea does not freeze in the most severe frosts. The cape is located on the edge of the island of Mageryo, which protrudes above the water with giant rock formations. The polar sun all summer illuminates the granite ledges of the North Cape with flocks of birds soaring in the sky. Thousands of eiders, gulls, guillemots live on the coast, which breed offspring on the cliffs. The most desperate adventure that the locals could come up with is rock climbing for warm fluff from nests and eggs.

On all sides, the North Cape surrounds the North Arctic Ocean, the height of the cliff with water foaming at the bottom is 300 meters. When you stand on the edge of the cape, only the Arctic is further than you. The observation deck of the North Cape, in the center of which there is a monument to the unity of the countries and peoples of the world in the form of a model the globe, is the climax of the journey of a tourist who has visited extreme point Europe. And even the chilling wind that dominates there even in mid-July will not spoil the beauty of the moment when even skeptical citizens can catch the wave of unity of nations.

Famous view of Europe's northernmost cape

On the smiling faces of Germans, Japanese, Italians, Chinese, Americans and Russians, emotions are similar and understandable without translation - today everyone conquered the North Cape!

How to get to the North Cape

The easiest way is to use the services of one of the many travel agencies that organize excursions to this point in Norway. If you are planning independent travel, then you should get to the nearest village to the cape - Honningsvåg. From there you can take a bus or drive further. The passage to the cape is paid. This fee is already included in the price of the bus ticket. Those who plan to get to the North Cape by car, at the barrier blocking the entrance to the cape, will need to fork out extra.

If you decide to go hiking or cycling, you won't have to pay - so there is an opportunity to get to the North Cape for free.

Where to stay on the North Cape - hotels

On the North Cape, they often plan an overnight stay for 1-2 nights. This is the culmination of the journey, but even after it the tour of Norway continues. Therefore, it is important to find a cozy and inexpensive hotel as close to the cape as possible:

  • Scandic Bryggen 3* . This best hotel in the town of Honningsvåg, located near the port of Nordkapp. These are full-fledged Scandinavian "3 stars". Breakfasts are magical (Norwegian herring, red fish, homemade bread)! The hotel has 42 rooms, which are rarely vacant (especially in summer). Placement price - from 8,500 rubles.

Standard room at Scandic chain hotel

  • Nordkapp Turisthotell. Located as close as possible to the cape. 20 minutes away is Kirkeporten, from where you can best view to the North Cape! Each room has comfortable beds, a shower and the necessary amenities. Eat free parking for auto travelers.

The Nordkapp Turisthotell is made up of several similar houses

  • Nordkapp Vandrerhjem Hostel – modern hostel (two spacious kitchens + two halls with TVs and seating areas). Hearty breakfasts, Scandinavian. North Cape is about 30-40 minutes drive. The hostel was built on the territory of the town of Honningsvåg. The cost of a bed is from 4,000 rubles.

The Nordkapp Vandrerhjem Hostel consists of these small rooms

  • Kirkeporten Camping. This is our favorite option! Camping in Norway's northernmost village Skarsvag. In this hotel, in addition to a trip to the North Cape, a lot of entertainment: diving, fishing, Norwegian cuisine, hiking, relaxing and watching the midnight sun.

Such cozy houses guests are waiting!

  • Nordkapp Camping - most cheap option in the Nordkapp area (see prices on its page, vary depending on the date of arrival). The campsite is located between Honningsvåg and the village of Skarsvag. The place was chosen superbly - the northern landscapes are all around! For traveling by car, it's perfect.

All campsites in North Cape are subtly similar to each other 🙂

Why go to the North Cape

First of all, to experience the incredible energy of this place. Fascinating northern landscapes, harsh and incredibly beautiful, the boundless expanse of the ocean, the wind from the Arctic - all this is worth seeing and feeling at least once in your life. And also, in order to look at the midnight sun in summer, and in winter -. From mid-May to the very end of July, the sun does not set here at all. And on the polar night, which lasts here for a long three months, in the sky above the non-freezing sea, an extravaganza of rare beauty from multi-colored flashes and pulsating flicker is played out. Finally, at the North Cape, you should definitely take a picture, bending over and almost “lying” in a dense and elastic wind.

Is it true that the "end of the world" is in Norway?

Everyone knows the expression "end of the world". But few know where he actually is. So, experts say that the end of the world is located in Norway and is called the North Cape. And in fact - here, on the observation deck of the cape, located above the sea at an altitude of 308 meters, the observer is separated from the North Pole only by the Svalbard archipelago. So, yes, the most northern cape mainland Europe. Probably the end of the world.

Sightseeing in North Cape: things to see

Midnight sun on the North Cape

Strictly speaking, the main attraction of this place is the cape itself and the Arctic Ocean. However, one should not skip other man-made objects:

  • Monument to the unity of all countries and peoples (we already know it) in the form of a model of the globe, installed on the observation deck. All visitors to the North Cape consider it their duty to take a picture at its foot;
  • Monument "Children of the Earth" (otherwise it is called "Children of War" or "Children of Peace"). This is a sculpture of a woman and a boy, which points to seven medallions located around them, each of which has an impression of a child's drawing with the word "Peace" in different languages. The monument itself is not bad, and if you add here the harsh northern landscapes of the "ends of the earth", it is especially impressive;
  • Tourist centre located mostly underground. There is a cafe, a bar, a museum, a cinema, souvenir shops (where would they be without them), toilets and a post office (you can send a postcard home with the North Cape stamp). Read more about the center below.

Tourist center - infrastructure

During the white nights, the tourist center of the North Cape, which covers about 5,000 kilometers, is crowded. Guests can visit the cinema hall for 250 seats, buy memorable souvenirs, see the exposition dedicated to the first travelers to the North Cape and even stay in a honeymoon hotel. But the main thing - you can warm up and take a break from the endless wind.

At the first stages, only the ground part of the tourist center appears to the eyes of tourists, most of which is hidden in the rock under a rocky plateau. At the main entrance to the North Cape complex, there is the King Oscar Monument, erected on the plateau by the kings of Norway and Sweden in 1873.

Is it true that the building has Postal office, where can I send a postcard with special markings?
As the author of the lines, I will say that I sent postcards with the North Cape stamp three times and ... none of them reached the addressee. Apparently, the spirit of collecting woke up at the wrong time among the workers of the postal services, and the letter with the stamp of the northernmost cape of Europe went to someone's "bins of the motherland."

There is also a cinema in the tourist center where they play promo videos with views of Norway - an unforgettable sight! You can also purchase a document certifying a visit to the cape. Some tour operators practice the mass purchase of "certificates of the conquest of the North Cape" and solemnly hand them over at the moment when tourists cross the threshold of the complex. It's nice, damn it!

And the last thing worth paying attention to is the Grotten Bar, where you can order a glass of champagne with salmon caviar. The atmosphere in the bar is mythical, the room is lit only by dim candles. Exactly at midnight, the window blinds are raised to the noisy encouragement of the Norwegian "trolls" (these are mythological creatures that begin to actively run around the hall before the climax of the event), and an unforgettable sight opens up before the tourists - the polar sun.

“Let the midnight sun in” is the name of this tradition. But not all guests are lucky - sometimes the sun can hide behind a veil of clouds.

Wherever you stay in the North Cape area - be it Hammerfest or any of the many fishing villages - remember to plan your first visit after 10:00 pm. Getting to know the cape in the morning is nothing compared to the charm of the midnight sun.

What else you need to do on the North Cape (or take with you) to make the trip memorable:

  • Although the tradition of drinking champagne with Norwegian salmon on the North Cape is strong and developed over the years, take care of more "soul-warming" drinks. Honestly, you won't regret it - even a temperature of 5-6 ° C at the height of summer is considered a great success here;
  • Don't Neglect the Opportunity watch a half hour movie at the cinema tourist center mentioned above. If you are already in love with Norway, these 30 minutes will give you a few more pleasant moments of a date with the most beautiful corner Europe. If you still don’t know Norway well, then the film is doubly a must-see!
  • Do not forget take a picture against the background of the composition of the unification of children planets (these are round stone blocks with prints of children's drawings). You will see the wishes of peace and friendship in ... Russian.

How to dress for a trip to the North Cape

Warm. Regardless of whether you are going there in summer or winter. In July, it is about 9-11 degrees Celsius, and there is a constant cold wind from the Arctic, so you should make sure that your clothes are warm and not blown. In winter, thanks to the Gulf Stream, it is not particularly cold here, 3-11 degrees below zero. It could have been quite comfortable if not for the same winds. And, of course, shoes should be warm and comfortable.

It's done. I have reached the starting point of my European trip around the world - Cape Nordkapp. Formally, Nordkapp is considered the northernmost tip of continental Europe, although it is located on big island- the continent cuts through the sea strait, under which an automobile tunnel is dug 6870 meters long!

The road to the Finnish border of Murmansk is quite bad: either broken asphalt across the entire width of the canvas, or its absence at all. However, I got to locality Verkhnetulomsky, which is located 100 km from Murmansk. Here it is important not to pass the gas station if you have not refueled in the capital of the region: in Murmansk you can fill up a diesel for 33 r / l, and here it is already 34 rubles. Another and the last gas station in Russia of the same incomprehensible local company is already at the very barrier of the border zone. The price here is for the 95th and diesel ... 39 rubles!

Border. I had several intrigues related to customs clearance at once. One of them is a broken windshield. They scared me that they might dig in, and in Germany they would even arrest me and throw me in jail for a couple of years. Another intrigue is a worthless ordinary power of attorney without mentioning that it can be used to travel outside the Russian Federation. Trusts on English language also no.

    //prohorov.livejournal.com

I'm going to our checkpoint. Silence and no one. Pine trees, sand and piercingly clean air. As in a boarding house, where vacationers were not brought. Went to traffic control. A nice woman twisted my documents - everything is fine. Not a word about a power of attorney (and in Abkhazia they turned me around for this, but in Ukraine they demanded only 1000 rubles). Inspection - cleanly looked at the car. OK

I enter Finland with a broken windshield. Nobody. I go to the customs office. I hold out my passport, answer a couple of on-duty questions about the purpose of the visit, get a document with a seal and get out ... Nobody even approached the car. Yes, there was no one there, except for that guy in the window passport control. Okay, let's go. So I ended up in the EU.

First of all, I went to the S-market supermarket, which is located along the way in the city of Ivalo. Since Norway is dear country and a few days of traveling in Scandinavia, I will have to have no idea where to spend the night and it’s not clear what to eat, I bought several cans of dried fruits to chew on, a few cans of tuna (one Thai tuna turned out to be - pah!), chips, a couple of cans of corn and ... and beer! Took a Finnish classic - Lapin Kulta

Speaking of money. Finland accepts the Euro, Norway and Sweden have their own currency - crowns. If everything is clear with the Euro exchange rate, then it is already difficult to calculate prices in these same Swedish or Norwegian kroner. Although you just give a card, and then you are quietly horrified by the debited amount.

Lapland (Northern Finland) pleases from the first kilometers good quality asphalt (for some reason, groundwater, transit traffic, and weather get better). Also, Finland immediately falls in love with nature, which the Finns take care of with love: there are lakes, pine trees, islands, artistically scattered boulders ... For a few moments I believed that I was in my homeland, in my ideal homeland. But my faith was quickly cut off by a reindeer on the side of the road - I wanted to see a cow. "Wow! Deer!" and let's take pictures of his ass. With horns. Then, at Nordkapp, I drove these reindeer almost with pendals, which faster way passed.

The last throw and Ian and I reach the goal. The harsh nature around: not a single tree, only wet squelching moss underfoot, and sharp stones. I took a couple of photos on the cape itself, but accidentally wiped them out when I was cleaning the flash drive. Well, okay, there's not much to do there - crowds of tourists from the ocean liner.

Cape North Cape is officially considered the northernmost point in Europe. If you delve a little into the mental nooks and crannies of Europeans, it will become clear that we are talking here not about a geographical concept, but about a geopolitical one. That is, in this case, we mean the territory of Europe with the exception of the European part of Russia. Well, what, right, Russia is a drowsy Asia, and there is no need to climb into our Europe with your golden domes. After all, yes? Be that as it may, in all popular European guidebooks without a twinge of conscience it is written: "Visit the North Cape - the northernmost point of Europe." The quote from the song of the Time Machine group is best suited here: “Only I state directly: this is complete nonsense!” Yes, the northernmost point in Europe is nothing more than beautiful legend for gullible travelers...

The only reason for its occurrence is a beautiful asphalt road ending right at the cape: everyone can easily get here by any convenient transport from a bicycle to a motorhome.

Let's search for the truth together. Let's start with the fact that the North Cape is located on the island, which, although connected to the mainland by an underwater tunnel, is still an island. Therefore, if we are talking about the northernmost point of continental Europe, then this is Cape Nordkin, located 60 kilometers east of the North Cape. The peninsula, the end of which this cape is, is also called in the same way, therefore, in order not to be confused, this cape is called in the Norwegian language (in Norwegian - Kinnarodden). It is 5700 meters south of the North Cape, but it is really the northernmost geographical point continental Europe (as well as its western and southwestern points, respectively, are located in Portugal and). Leads to Cape Nordkin hiking trail 24 kilometers long (this is one way), so there are not so many who suffer from visiting it.

If we talk about the island of Magerøya, then here the North Cape is not at all the northernmost point. A few kilometers to the west is Cape Knivskjellodden (Norwegian - Knivskjelodden), which extends north beyond the North Cape for a kilometer and a half. A hiking trail also leads here, this time its length is 9 kilometers one way.

To make it easier to understand, I have prepared for you a map of the capes of Northern Norway.

Magerøya, by the way, is far to the northernmost island of Europe. If we, in the European manner, do not take into account the territory of Russia, then the northernmost point of Europe will be located somewhere in the north of the Svalbard archipelago. This is a thousand kilometers north of the North Cape. Well, if we discard geopolitics, and look solely from the point of view of geography, then the northernmost point of Europe is north coast Rudolf Island, part of the archipelago of Franz Josef Land. It is also the northernmost point of Russia and the northernmost point of Eurasia.

In general, if any title can be given to the North Cape, then only "the northernmost point in Europe, where you can get on asphalt." This fact is successfully exploited for commercial purposes - there is a large tourist complex on the cape, the entrance to the territory of which costs 245 NOK, which is almost 1500 Russian rubles. The ticket allows you to return an unlimited number of times within 48 hours.

Here you can find a museum, a hotel, several cafes, a souvenir shop, a post office and even a cinema, which periodically plays scientific and educational films.

Here he is - northern border Europe. Something very similar to, located in its southwest.

It is 4,300 kilometers from here in a straight line. If on asphalt - then about 5600. And if you ride a bike along the coast, you will get as much as 8186 kilometers. And after all, someone rides - there is an official European cycling route "EuroVelo 1", or "EV1" for short, starting at the North Cape, then passing through the territory of Norway, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal and ending in Sagres.

Monument "Children of the World". Installed in 1989. Sketches of the monument were drawn by children from different countries.

From the North Cape you can clearly see the northernmost point of the island of Magerøya - Cape Knivskjellodden. You can get there only on foot, the walk will take at least half a day.

Cape North Cape has been known since ancient times - even in the early Middle Ages, the Viking sea route to Bjarmia ran here.

Despite this, the North Cape also has an official discovery date: in 1553, the English traveler Richard Chancellor visited here during an expedition in search of the North Cape. sea route to India and His journey then ended in the area White Sea, and its result was the beginning of trade relations between England and Russia.

It was Richard Chancellor who gave the cape modern name- North Cape, in Norwegian - Nordkapp, in English - North Cape - "Northern Cape".

In 1664, the Italian priest Francesco Negri arrived here. He was fascinated by the beauty of the cape, and called it "the most amazing place in the world". It is he who is considered the first traveler to visit the top of the plateau.

In the 19th century, the North Cape becomes quite popular place. Need I say that then the journey to northern border Europe was considered a great feat and was always celebrated with a glass of champagne. In 1873, the king of Sweden and Norway, Oscar II, visited the cape, by decree of which, just two years later, the first cruise ship with tourists arrived at the cape.

The extreme point is a plateau at the tip of the cape, rising 307 meters above the ocean. For a long time, travelers had to climb here along a steep path, until an asphalt highway was built in 1965.

Around - the boundless Arctic Ocean. Although, to be absolutely precise, it is the Barents Sea. From here to the North Pole is about 2100 kilometers. The main thing is not to forget that approximately in the middle between the North Pole and the North Cape there is a fairly large archipelago of Svalbard. So to say that we are at the very edge of the earth is somewhat incorrect. But who cares?

The symbol of the North Cape is a metal globe on the edge of the plateau.

In summer it is always crowded here. But to hide from the bustle of the world is quite simple - just move away from the globe literally a hundred meters. An inconspicuous path leading along the very edge of the cliff will lead the suffering solitude to a small rocky area.

Here you can comfortably sit right on the edge of the cliff and silently contemplate the majestic three-hundred-meter cliffs for a long time. A cold arctic wind will blow in your face, blowing away all the affairs and problems of everyday life, and cold ocean waves will roar menacingly below...

On a small rocky ledge, on the very edge of the abyss, a small monument hides from prying eyes, a sacred memory of one of my very good friend. The inscription in Norwegian reads: "To those who have gone too soon..."

Moments will turn into minutes, minutes will turn into hours, and soon evening will fall on the northern border of Europe. It’s the middle of July outside, which means the sun will never hide in the depths of the ocean — so after a very short time, the evening will smoothly flow into the morning.

On the horizon, nature will play its next colorful performance.

And I will go further, leaving a piece of my soul on a small platform near the cliff, and instead taking with me an expensive souvenir from a local shop. A few days later, a neat sticker on the package will remind me that it was purchased at the northernmost point in Europe ... Well, yes, who would doubt it!

The place where the North Cape is located is the country of Norway. It is located in its northern part, on the island of Magere. Its height reaches 307 meters. Cape North Cape in Norway is often called However, this opinion is incorrect, since there are more northern islands, for example, Svalbard.

However, this impression of tourists from the proximity to the North Pole does not become less vivid. According to many, a trip to the North Cape in Norway is a very exciting event. Information about it will be presented in our article.

    General information

North Cape in Norway is a site on a large granite rock. It is split by cracks forming three ledges. The one in the middle, the largest, is the North Cape. Its upper part is flat, covered with rocky tundra, with small lakes located here. The closest port to the cape is small town Honningsvåg, where the fishermen live.

North Cape in Norwegian means "northern cape", so the word cape can be omitted when mentioning it. The sun in this area does not set at any time of the day from late May to late July. Therefore, the complex on the mountain is very popular with tourists, from where you can admire the nature of the Scandinavian land. The coordinates of the North Cape in Norway are 71 degrees north latitude and 25 degrees east longitude. It is washed by the waters of the Arctic and Atlantic oceans.

Today, getting to these places is not difficult. Approximately 200 thousand tourists come here every summer. There is an information center on the cape called North Cape Hall, which hosts year-round exhibitions. And also there is the chapel of St. Johannes, the northernmost of the ecumenical ones (the ideology of the unity of all Christians), weddings are often held in it.

    A bit of history

The name of the cape was given in 1553 by Richard Chancellor, an English explorer. Then he walked beside him, looking for north passage. In the future, many explorers visited the cape, who climbed the plateau along the rock. The first tourist appeared on the plateau in 1664. It was Francesco Negri, an Italian priest.

The most famous of the visitors are Oscar II, King of Norway (1973) and Chulalongkorn, King of Thailand (1907). Today it is a popular tourist spot with an observation deck.

Not far from it, in 1943, a battle took place between the German and British fleets - the so-called battle at the North Cape. As the victor in this battle, Bruce Fraser, a British admiral, was awarded the title of Baron of the North Cape.

Cape washed by the Gulf Stream

The Norwegian Sea, which washes the North Cape in Norway, is ice-free, which is typical even on days with the most severe frosts. This happens thanks to warm waters Gulf Stream, passing near the Scandinavian coast. The cape protrudes above the water in the form of giant rocks, glowing in the rays of the polar summer sun. Numerous flocks of birds soar in the sky above it.

Thousands and thousands of such birds live on the coast, such as eiders, guillemots, gulls, breeding among the cliffs. The inhabitants of these places, climbing the rocks, get eggs and warm fluff from their nests. When tourists stop at the edge of the North Cape in Norway, only the harsh Arctic lies beyond them.

How to get there by car

To get to the North Cape in Norway, good choice there will be an appeal to one of the many travel companies who organize excursions to this point. When planning an independent trip, you will first need to be in the village closest to the cape - Honningsvåg.

There you can take a bus or continue driving. Travel to the cape is paid. This amount is already included in the bus ticket price. Those who want to go by car will need to pay money by slowing down at the barrier that blocks the way to the cape. Will be free walking tour or a bike ride.

    From Murmansk

Cape North Cape is one of the few places that can be reached in two or three days from the city of Murmansk. You can plan one overnight stay, but for those who want to admire northern Norway not only from the car window, it is best to allocate three full days for the trip.

The distance between Murmansk and the North Cape is about 800 kilometers. On internet maps optimal route laid through Ivalo - a village located in the province of Lappi in Finland. However, the winding roads of Norway can be preferred to the Finnish route, while the difference in distance will not be significant.

Whether traveling by car, motorbike or camper, any of these modes of transport can reach the North Cape in Norway, where the E69 highway ends. On one of the sections of the path there is a tunnel passing over the sea and located at a depth of 212 meters.

    Where to stay?

As a rule, tourists plan to spend the night on the North Cape for one or two nights. At the same time, it is important to find an inexpensive and comfortable hotel closer to the cape. Let's consider some of them.

    • Scandic Bryggen. This is the best three-star hotel in the Nordkapp in Norway, in the town of Honningsvåg, which is close to the port. It is a full-fledged "3 stars" characteristic of Scandinavia. There are very tasty breakfasts, which include, for example, homemade bread, red fish, Norwegian herring. In total there are 42 rooms, which are hard to imagine free, especially in the summer. The placement price starts from 8.5 thousand rubles.
    • Nordkapp Turisthotell. Located on the most close range from the cape. The Kirkeporten Rock, which offers the best view of the North Cape, is just a 20-minute walk from the hotel. Each of the rooms has comfortable beds, a shower and other necessary amenities. There is free parking for car travelers. This hotel is a complex of several houses.
    • Nordkapp Vandrerhjem Hostel. This is a modern hostel, consisting of two spacious kitchens, two TV rooms and recreation areas. Tourists are fed with delicious, hearty Scandinavian breakfasts. From the town of Honningsvåg, where this object is located, it takes about half an hour to drive to North Cape. The cost of one bed starts from 4 thousand rubles.
    • Kirkeporten Camping. This campsite is located in Skarsvag, the northernmost Norwegian village. In addition to the excursion to the North Cape, it offers a lot of entertainment in the form of fishing, diving, tasting Norwegian cuisine, hiking, relaxing and observing the midnight sun.
    • Nordkapp Camping. Checking in at this campsite is the most economical option that can be found in the North Cape area. Prices are highly dependent on arrival date. The campsite is located between Honningsvåg and Skarsvag. It is surrounded by magnificent northern landscapes. For those who travel by car, it is the most suitable.

    What can be seen?

Of course, by and large, the main attraction of these places are the cape itself and the ocean. And of course, unique views and admiring the never-setting sun in the summer months. But there are other sights of the Nordkapp in Norway, created by human hands. These include:

    • A monument symbolizing the unity of all peoples and countries, which is a model in the form of a globe, which stands on an observation deck. It is at its foot that the most memorable photos for tourists are taken in the Nordkapp (Norway).

    • Monument "Children of the Earth", or "Children of the World". It was founded in 1989 by seven guys who came from different parts of the world and symbolizes friendship, hope, happiness and cooperation.
    • Tourist center, which is mostly underground. There is a museum, a cinema, a cafe, a bar, souvenir shops, a post office from where you can send home a postcard with the North Cape stamp on it.

Let's take a closer look at these sights.

    Climax

The monument dedicated to the unity of the countries and peoples of the world is located in the center observation deck and is the climax tourist route covering this northern point of Europe. The beauty of the moment, when even skeptical people feel the mood of universal unity, is not spoiled even by a chilling wind that continues to blow even in the middle of summer. All around you can see the smiling faces of the Japanese, Germans, Chinese, Italians, Russians, Americans who understand each other without any words.

    peace monument

The monument "Children of the Earth" is a sculpture of the figures of a boy and a woman standing side by side and touching each other. The boy points to the seven medallions that are arranged around them. Each medallion has an imprint of a child's drawing and the word "peace" written in different languages. The monument itself is very impressive, and being “on the edge of the earth”, against the backdrop of a harsh northern landscape, it makes an indelible impression.

The tourist center on the North Cape has become an iconic Norwegian landmark. It goes underground for several floors, which is dictated by the Norwegians' concern for the surrounding natural species. During the onset of white nights, it is especially crowded here.

Guests have the opportunity to visit a cinema hall with 250 seats, buy souvenirs, see an exposition dedicated to the first travelers to the North Cape (Norway), check into a honeymoon hotel, and also warm up and relax from the endless wind. At the main entrance to the complex called "North Cape" there is a memorial dedicated to King Oscar II, who in 1873 visited this place in the north of his possessions.

In the cinema, you can watch promotional videos with views of Norway, which make a strong impression. In the center, if desired, a document is issued that indicates a visit to the cape. In the Grotten Bar, you can treat yourself to a glass of champagne with salmon caviar.

The lighting of the room is a fire from dim candles, which creates a mysterious atmosphere here. This is related to a tradition called "Let the Midnight Sun in". At midnight, the blinds on the windows open, which is accompanied by cheerful exclamations of the "trolls" who begin to run around the hall, anticipating the culmination of the expected event. And here, before the astonished eyes of tourists, a magical sight opens up - the polar sun. However, there is one drawback here, as guests may not be lucky due to the fact that the sun can be hidden by a thick veil of clouds.

    Cape surroundings

Not far from Cape Norcup is a town that has two streets, two shops, and a policeman comes here once a week. Local people are engaged in fish. That is, they catch it, sell it, eat it themselves. A museum dedicated to the history of the city and the fishing industry has recently been opened. By local residents old boats, anchors, floats and suits were collected. The old interior of the fish oil factory has also been restored. The city has shops with goods, without which it is impossible to live in the Far North.

Skarsvog village is located 14 km from the cape. It is considered the northernmost, and its population is 60 people. Here you can visit a fish factory with the best salted fish in the world and learn about the survival of fishermen in stormy seas. For tourists, they can organize an excursion to the king crab, where they often take pictures, holding it with both hands. Those who wish to try a dish from this arthropod can apply for dinner.

Local residents of the villages are not very dependent on the authorities. After all, having their own windmills, a fish factory, a port with cruise liners and tourists, they can well provide for themselves.

Tourists are undoubtedly interested in the landscapes of the North Cape. But there is a place that attracts not only with beauty, but with its history and culture - these are the rocks near the city of Alta. In their beauty and "architecture" they are not inferior to many sights of the world and will certainly enchant even the most sophisticated traveler. The rocks are covered with petroglyphs - drawings created approximately 2.5-6.5 thousand years ago. They were discovered relatively recently, in 1972, under a layer of mosses and lichens. Presumably, the drawings were created by the ancestors of the Saami, who belonged to the Finno-Ugric language group and inhabited the entire north. Over time, they were pushed back to the very north of the peninsula by reindeer herders and hunters.

Although there are still places in the county of Finnmark, the population of which consists mainly of the Sami. They still have central location occupied by a deer, and they pass on their traditions from generation to generation. For example, the song art of yoik has been preserved, as well as incredibly beautiful national costumes.
