Traveling by car: what to do before the trip and take with you? What not to do before leaving. Make payments in local currency

Hardly anyone would argue with the statement that good rest is the most important part of our life, which allows us not only to have a good time and get a lot of new experiences, but also to recuperate and come up with a lot of promising ideas. In this regard, mention should be made of long-awaited vacation, which the majority of the working population dreams of so much.

Unfortunately, many people are so absorbed in plans for their future trip that they do not have time to prepare for their vacation at all or pay little attention to this issue. As a result, a frivolous attitude to packing and preparation can significantly spoil all the positive impressions of the trip. And to prevent this from happening, you should know what needs to be done before the vacation and how to properly organize the trip in advance. Read more about this issue below.

Two weeks before vacation

What to do the week before vacation

What to do before a vacation 1-2 days before departure

  1. Inform your relatives and friends about the planned trip, tell where you are going, for how long and indicate the route of the trip.
  2. Consider in advance how you will get to the airport or train station with your luggage. In some settlements doing it on time is not so easy.
  3. Get rid of any perishable foods in your refrigerator, as well as various vegetables and fruits with a limited shelf life.
  4. If your home has an alarm, notify the security company of your departure.
  5. Write down or print out on paper the address of your destination (place of residence).
  6. Check out the weather forecast for your destination beforehand to be prepared for various surprises.
  7. Confirm your hotel reservation if necessary.
  8. Find and download programs and applications to your mobile gadget that can be very useful when traveling - maps, a notifier, a guide, a dictionary, a translator, and more.
  9. Use the auto-responder feature on your email so you don't have to worry about the emails you receive.
  10. Fully charge all your mobile devices (smartphone, tablet, laptop, e-reader, etc.) that you take with you on a trip. Don't forget to take a charger for each one as well.
  11. Provide yourself with the right amount of cash in banknotes with different denominations.

On the departure day

  1. Add up all the most important documents, tickets, money, devices and gadgets in a small handy bag that will always be with you.
  2. Make sure all doorways and windows close securely.
  3. Turn off the lights everywhere, turn off the gas and water for the period of your departure and throw out all the accumulated garbage. Unplug electronic devices and all household appliances.
  4. Water the flowers, close the curtains and blinds. But this is not where the information about what needs to be done before the vacation ends.

What you need to take with you

Naturally, the set of necessary things is determined individually, based on your personal preferences and needs. But it is worth paying attention to those items that, due to inattention, are most often forgotten at home.

  1. Personal hygiene items: toilet soap, hair shampoo, toothpaste and brush, shaving gel, razor, deodorant, towel.
  2. Medications, which must necessarily include a small plaster for corns, painkillers, headache medicine, activated charcoal, cotton wool, iodine, as well as medications prescribed by your doctor.
  3. Travel itinerary, maps and guide.
  4. Charging device for various gadgets.
  5. Magazine or book.
  6. Pencil, pen, small notepad or notebook.
  7. Headphones for the player (smartphone).
  8. Sunglasses and sunblock.

Now you know everything about what you need to do before your vacation until the very departure. Good luck!

If you want to go on a trip, but don't know how to do it, then you've come to the right place! Klim and I visited 49 countries, and their number is constantly growing. We started with hitchhiking in Russia, with a backpack and on a motorcycle in Asia, by car in Europe, and for the last two years we have been continuously traveling in the Americas. You can follow us at In contact with and in Facebook.

So, what are the main steps you need to take to the trip of your dreams?

1. Think over the route

From our experience, we can say that it is better to start with short trips close to home, gradually increasing the number of nights spent away from home.

The easiest direction will be your own country. For example, we started with trips from Moscow to St. Petersburg, along the Golden Ring, then Eastern Europe, Scandinavia - and only then we left for our first big Adventure(for seven months in Asia).

By the way, Asia is one of the easiest destinations for long-term travel: millions of travelers from all over the world come here every year. They are attracted by cheapness, the availability of infrastructure: hostels, moped, motorcycle and car rentals, delicious street food, and, of course, Asian flavor.

When thinking over the route, do not forget to clarify whether visas are needed for each of the countries on the way. Sometimes this can come as an unpleasant surprise.

2. Find a source of funding

There are a lot of options and which one to choose is up to you. Among the most popular options on how to financially prepare for a trip:

  • Creation of author's courses. If you are well versed in a topic and are friends with the camera, then courses can become great way earnings. There are many sites where you can post your courses, and here are some of them: https://www.udemy.com/ , https://www.skillshare.com , https://www.coursera.org/
  • Volunteering. It is rarely paid, but at least you will not lose anything, but only gain unique experience and new friends. Popular sites for finding volunteer programs: https://vk.com/goodsurfing(verified group, personally acquainted with its founder - Ilya Popov), https://www.workaway.info/ , https://www.helpx.net/

The advantages of this type of travel - you can find yourself in places you didn't even know existed.

3. Get your personal finances in order

By this I mean thinking about exactly how you will get access to money, what will happen if, say, you get sick, your card or passport is stolen.

Many travelers still carry cash with them, in which case I recommend preparing for the trip in advance, and converting everything to dollars / euros, depending on the direction. For example, in Latin America you can travel and pay in dollars almost everywhere, and in some places the dollar is the official currency.

Because our trip too long-term, so much cash cannot be taken with you, so we prefer ATMs.

For many years now, we have been served by Tinkoff Bank and use a Visa dollar card for travel. For us, the advantages of this bank is that all transactions can be performed online, technical support works 24x7 and works very quickly and professionally.

Helpful Hints:

  • Erase the CVC code (the last three digits on reverse side cards), so that it would not be so scary to give the card, say, in a cafe or at a gas station in an unfamiliar place
  • Make sure that the card you choose has a cashback function: return a percentage of the amount spent. According to ours - 1% cashback. That is, for every spent 1000 rubles, we get +10 rubles.
  • Get used to summing up the financial results for the month. There are a million applications for this, but we have been budgeting in a regular Google Spreadsheet for many years.
  • Pay everywhere with one card: it's easier to sum up the financial results for the month, plus cashback
  • Make a spare card, and preferably two: take one with you, but hide it well so that in case of loss you have a livelihood, and leave the second with a trusted person in your country of residence. Then a friend/relative will always be able to a) send you this card, b) pay for your tickets/accommodation for the time that you restore the original card
  • It is advisable to have cards of different payment systems. For example, one Visa, another MasterCard, since depending on the country, one of them will be more profitable

Tinkoff has another cool product, the All Airlines card, which gives you cashback in the form of travel miles. If you issue it through, then you will receive a gift - 3 months free service. A nice bonus is built-in insurance for 45 days. Great option for travelers!

Our personal experience: Klim and I have a lot of cards, while only one is actively used, two are in Russia in case of loss / robbery, one card is to be shown as collateral in dubious places, four more are hidden in the car, and a couple more are lying in Russia in case of unforeseen circumstances. At the same time, money between them can move online, within 2 minutes.

4. Take care of your health

You should not go on a trip sick, at least because the change of time zones and climate in themselves are stressful for the body, and against the background of illness, they can feel even worse. In addition, not everywhere you go will have access to the same medicines as at home.

Please note that Russia is one of the few countries where it is allowed to buy antibiotics without a prescription. if you have chronic diseases, then you should not go on a trip during their acute phase, it is better to wait, and do not forget to translate the names of this disease into the most popular languages in the region of the trip, or at least into English.

We also strongly recommend that you go on a trip with your teeth in excellent condition: it is often more expensive and much more difficult to treat them abroad. At a minimum, you will need to find a good doctor, and then explain to him in his language what hurts you. The task is not easy, especially since, according to our experience, dentistry in Russia is simply excellent!

The next step is vaccinations. Depending on the direction of travel, some vaccinations may be required. For example, it is officially forbidden to enter Brazil without a yellow fever vaccination. Vaccinations should be done in advance, as some vaccination schemes stretch for several months. In principle, they can be delivered to you according to an accelerated scheme, but then they will have to be repeated earlier than the vaccination according to the standard scheme would have worked.

If you have vision problems, keep in mind that in some countries lenses cannot be bought without a prescription, and going to a doctor's consultation is paid and usually not covered by insurance. In general, if you have been thinking about vision correction surgery for a long time, then I advise you not to shelve this decision and do it before the trip.

I have good eyesight, but Klim had minus four in each eye, and on one of his visits to Russia he made a correction: his happiness knew no bounds. Now he sees everything almost better than me.

By the way, if you are traveling with a pet, then do not forget to do all the necessary medical procedures before the trip!

5. Buy insurance

Whatever country you are going to, you should not do this without insurance, no matter how much you want to save money. Buying insurance is my must-have item when preparing for a trip. I know not a single case from the inner circle when people did not want to pay 3 thousand for a policy, and then paid 20-30 thousand in the hospital, already out of their own money.

All our insurances, bought over the years of travel, “rebuffed” with one visit to a hospital in the USA, where I was billed for $ 2,500 for an appointment. It would be very unpleasant to pay this amount out of your wallet.

For many years we have been using an aggregator that also allows you to choose and buy insurance if you are already on a trip. By the way, if you are going to the USA, then we have about buying insurance for this particular direction. However, travelers who are going to other lands will also not be superfluous to read.

There is one trick when you buy insurance while already on a trip. Let's say if today is July 1, then the earliest date when your insurance will take effect is July 6 (+5 days). Insurance companies take these five days to rid themselves of the risk of fraud: let's say if you break your leg, then you will have to wait 5 days to see an insurance doctor. Therefore, if you are on a trip, buy insurance at least 5 days before the desired start date of insurance.

6. Put documents in order

The first step to this is to make scans of all the documents you have. This is useful in everyday life, and especially when traveling. Here is a list of documents whose scans we use constantly:

  • Russian passport
  • international passport
  • car license

It is advisable to leave a folder with sorted documents with a person who, if necessary, is ready to send them promptly.

7. Make a power of attorney for the SIM card

In general, a power of attorney is needed for any action that you may need when you are not in the country: let's say you planned a trip for six months, and then suddenly decided to stay longer, and you want to sell your car / apartment / insert any object here, but do not want to return home.

In this case, you can issue a power of attorney in advance for the person you trust this procedure. The power of attorney is issued by a notary, but for a SIM card it is enough just to come to the operator's office with a passport.

In our case, this is the office of Megafon, where we personally came with my mother to issue two powers of attorney for her: for me and for Klim. Each of us presented our Russian passport. It came in handy once when our SIM card fell out of a moderately worn wallet and got lost: the phone was blocked, and my mother received a new SIM instead of me.

8. Get an international SIM card

There are many options, among which we chose DrimSim. Their SIM card works in 197 countries of the world, and they can send it anywhere in the world. After a year of use, we only regret that we did not issue two SIM cards at once. If you order it through this link, then you and we will receive a bonus of 5€ to the account.

Usually we try to buy a SIM card on the first day of arrival in new country, but sometimes the offices are closed, or we are too tired to go there, or, as in the case of Panama, it simply does not make sense: DrimSim's Internet tariff was better there than the local operator.

Especially useful for travelers without a car: you may need to call a taxi (link discount on your first trip on Uber), book a hotel or find a bus schedule before you can find the nearest mobile operator office.

9. Pay taxes

If you have not yet created your account for government services, then it's time to do it: this way you can get online access to all government services, including paying taxes for apartments / cars / businesses remaining in your homeland.

Additionally for business owners: if you work with Russian clients, then you need to issue an electronic signature in Diadoc and take a seal with you.

10. Learn English

Do you think that you are already tired of hearing it from all sides, and do you think that everyone in the world will understand you if you speak loudly, clearly and in Russian? Now, this is a lie. Of course, you can lay your route exclusively in Russia and the CIS countries, and go abroad exclusively to where there are a crowd of Russian speakers: GOA, Pattaya, Nha Trang. But how can you get to know other cultures?

The bad news: in our personal experience, we are one of the worst English speaking nations in the world. Good news- it's easy to fix. Travel is the best incentive to learn English, and it was travel that made us finally understand not only the importance, but also the grammar of the English language.

There is an endless amount of material on the Internet, but I recommend that if you have the money, spend it at a school in an English-speaking country. Two weeks at IELS Gozo in Malta is the best investment Money in training for all time, perhaps. If you go there, say hello to Katherine and Brian - they are our inspirations!

And be sure to download the app https://ru.duolingo.com/ - it's absolutely free, but it will be a great helper in learning a language, and not only English.

Also keep in mind that there are entire regions where, in addition to English, it’s good to know another language.

For example, Latin America, where we are currently traveling. If you learn at least a basic level of Spanish (eating, checking into a hotel, finding directions), then your life will become much easier.

11. Get rights

If you suddenly do not have this crust, and you are afraid to drive, then we still recommend that you get it.

Even if you do not initially plan to travel by car or motorcycle, having such an opportunity is always good, and sometimes even simply necessary.

From our personal experience I will say that there are situations when you are the only person who can help someone: take a person to a hospital or to a police station. At the same time, if you are planning a trip to Asia, I recommend immediately opening two categories: A and B, since motorcycles are almost more popular there than cars.

Do not forget that some countries insist on presenting international law especially for car rental. This point should be clarified for each specific country on your route.

Useful hack for Latin America and not only: make a beautiful copy of the rights, laminate it, and hide the original in a safe place. Most police officers have no idea what the original looks like, but unfortunately there are unscrupulous ones among them who may well extort a bribe to give you your rights. In case you gave away a copy, then you can not worry, close the door and drive off into the sunset to the surprisingly corrupt policemen.

12. Check the compatibility of the phone with frequencies in the country of destination

I'm sure it will come as a surprise to many that your phone may not work in some countries. To check frequency compatibility, there is a site: https://willmyphonework.net/ where you can choose your model and see if it will work, for example, in Zimbabwe.

If you have difficult route, crossing several countries, it will not be superfluous to buy a second phone, so as not to be left without communication. Sometimes it's easiest to do it on the spot: a simple new Android with 3g support will cost you $70-100.

13. See what voltage is in the mains on your route

The good news is that most personal gadgets support both 110V and 220V, however, not without exceptions. Before the trip, you must definitely find out what voltage and what sockets are there. A good multifunctional adapter is definitely something worth investing in. And do not forget about the consequences: if you plug, for example, a 220V hair dryer into a 110V outlet, then nothing bad will happen, but if it is the other way around, then your hair dryer will most likely end.

14. Leave everything else at home

This requires experience, and nothing more.

I will remember one of our first trips with Klim for the rest of my life, including because of a huge suitcase on wheels, where Klim put 4 trousers, 8 shirts, 5 T-shirts, an infinite number of socks and shorts for 2 weeks of our vacation. And I went with a backpack of 30 liters, taking with me the minimum necessary, and laughed for a long time, looking at all this variety of clothes.

But the fact is that my painful experience fell on more early years when we went hiking with scouts: on my first hiking I took on all the unnecessary things that crushed my shoulders so that by the evening I was only crying from fatigue.

Since then I have been taking necessary minimum, no more when it comes to traveling without a car.

Keep in mind that if your trip goes well, then gradually your backpack will be replenished with sweet souvenirs from your newfound friends. And at first, baubles and photographs will not take up much space, but after six months or a year of adventures, they will completely accumulate to be sent home. So, it's expensive. So save your space!

Also, this paragraph is not only about things. If you decide on this trip, then you should not take everything that you would like to get rid of: bad, negative emotions, prejudice, envy and anger.

15. Learn to take pictures

Or, as an option that I chose - to take as a companion someone who knows how to photograph. I like to write much more, and Klim has a talent for taking beautiful pictures.

The fact is that travel is a memory for a lifetime. Learning how to take beautiful photos is the easiest thing you can do to keep those memories in such a way that your grandchildren will say “wow!”.

Today there are thousands of sites and videos on youtube about how to take pictures of nature, people, architecture, landscapes, etc. The main thing is to choose the course that suits you, or ask a photographer friend ?) about help.

16. Think of something to do

Sitting at work in the office, everyone thinks that “give me a month, and I will do this and that, and I will go over there”, but reality proves that this is not so. Somewhere in a month, the fantasy ends: books are read, series are watched, places are visited. What to do next?

Long trips are already more life in which movement becomes part of the routine, and this is normal. You won’t be able to admire landscapes all the time and praise something endlessly, and this is also normal.

After 2 months, a normal person begins to quietly go crazy, and wants to return to work activities. And this should be encouraged! Now that you are rested and full of energy, it's time to return to point 1 of this article and understand what you would be interested in doing. Maybe you can teach the kids in the jungle English? Or teach guitar online? Perhaps you wanted to write a book about your adventures, learn to draw, or understand your family tree?

Whatever it is, the main thing is to start doing it. Share your ideas with others, get feedback, educate yourself, read books you never got your hands on, listen to unfamiliar music, learn how to cook an unfamiliar dish or dance the mumbo jumbo tribal dance. All in all, enjoy your trip!

Every year during summer holidays a lot of people pack up and go on an adventure. They travel singly, in groups or with whole families to warm sea, green forest or mountain coolness in order to relax and gain fresh impressions. But in order for the vacation to go smoothly and comfortably, you need to properly prepare for it. This article will show you how.

At least two days before

  1. Make sure someone picks up your mail. The sight of a crowded mailbox immediately indicates that you are away and may attract intruders.
  2. Attach a pet to friends or to a shelter.
  3. Pay your bills to avoid late fees while you're away.
  4. Check the toiletries, equipment, clothes, gadgets that you are going to take with you. Repair them or buy new things if necessary.
  5. Take care of entertainment on the plane, train or bus. Prepare books or magazines, download interesting content to your mobile device.
  6. Check and top up.
  7. Let family or friends know about your travel itinerary. If you doubt the need for this, then watch the movie "127 hours".
  8. Consider how you will get to the airport or train station. In some cities, this is not so easy.

One day before

  1. Throw out perishable food items from the refrigerator, as well as any fruits and vegetables that have a limited shelf life.
  2. If your home has an alarm, then inform the security service of your departure.
  3. Leave a trusted person, relatives or neighbors with the keys to your house. This can come in handy in case of emergencies or, for example, when watering is needed.
  4. Change bed linen. There is nothing better than returning home and finding fresh sheets there!
  5. Print your boarding pass.
  6. Write down or print out the destination address.
  7. Check the weather forecast at your point of arrival.
  8. Confirm hotel reservations.
  9. Find and install, if necessary, on your mobile gadget applications that may be useful to you (maps, messenger, guide, translator, and so on).
  10. Make electronic copies of your ID, ticket, insurance and other important documents and place them in an online repository.
  11. Activate the autoresponder in your email.
  12. Fully charge your smartphone, laptop, GPS and other electronic devices that you take with you.
  13. Provide for yourself the required amount cash in banknotes of various denominations.
  14. Call your bank and let them know about your trip.
  15. Gather all the necessary things in a suitcase or backpack.

On the departure day

  1. Pack your most important documents, tickets, money and gadgets into a small bag that will always be with you.
  2. Make sure all doors and windows close securely.
  3. Remove rubbish and other waste that may deteriorate.
  4. Wash all the dishes and tidy up the kitchen.
  5. Turn off the lights everywhere.
  6. Turn off electronic devices and household appliances.
  7. Water the flowers.
  8. Close all blinds and curtains.
  9. Once again, make sure that your hand luggage there are no prohibited items or substances.
  10. Check the availability of tickets, documents and the exact date of departure.

What to take with you

Of course, everyone determines a set of necessary things and clothes for himself, based on personal needs. But we want to draw your attention to a few things that people most often forget at home.

  • Personal hygiene items: disposable shampoo, soap, shaving accessories, toothbrush and paste, deodorant, towel.
  • A small first-aid kit, which must contain a plaster for corns, painkillers, activated charcoal, as well as medical products prescribed by your doctor.
  • Route, maps, guide.
  • Smartphone charger.
  • Book or magazine.
  • Pen or pencil and paper notebook.
  • Headphones.
  • and sunblock cream.

We hope that these tips will help you to successfully pack for the trip and spend it in such a way that as a result you have only the most positive memories.

Have you already gone on vacation?

What should you do before traveling to Europe?

1. Make sure your passport is valid

If you're planning a trip this summer, now is the time to look for your passport and make sure it's not expired. Remember that according to the laws of many countries, a tourist passport must be valid for at least six months (in some countries, only three months) before they grant the right to enter their country. And it doesn't matter how many days you are going to spend there; you will be denied entry if your passport expires in less than six months.

2. Light luggage or what not to take with you

One of the main mottos of a traveler is to travel light. Believe me, this option will make your trip much easier. No need to pack huge suitcases big amount unnecessary things, especially when you are going away for just a few days. Hit the brakes right now!

Benefits of traveling light:

  • don't pay for luggage
  • no need to be at the airport a few hours before the flight,
  • no need to stand in long queues for luggage,
  • you will never lose your suitcase,
  • you do not need to pay for the transportation of luggage by transport.

All you need to take is a large clothes bag with other small items that can be placed in convenient pockets. Remember that you will certainly find a place where you can wash your clothes, and that is why you should take them to in large numbers it makes no sense. Well, unless you want to show off your wardrobe to the locals, of course.

3. Take an extra bag

If you intend to go shopping, then take another bag with you, but thinner and lighter. Thus, on the way back, you can check in a suitcase, that is, a large bag, in luggage, and take an additional bag with you in hand luggage.

TIP: If you buy expensive items, then you should take a bag with them as hand luggage, and check in everything insignificant in your luggage.

4. How to sleep on the plane or get used to the regime

Agree, it is quite difficult to immediately get used to the new time zone. To adjust your biorhythm in a new way, you need to start the process long before the flight. Set your watch to the new time immediately in your country. If this does not affect your regimen in any way, then psychologically you will definitely be ready for it. Try to sleep and get up for several days in accordance with the regime or according to the time zone that is accepted in the country you are going to visit. If the plane takes off at night, then upon arrival, try to overcome sleep. If possible, stay awake until at least 10 pm local time.

5. Call the bank

Notify your bank that you are going to another country. You can even name the route and time of your stay abroad. For security reasons, the bank may temporarily block your credit card.

NOTE: To block the card, it is better to call the bank yourself. Very often, the online support service on the bank's website does not respond or does not provide such services virtually.

6. Make payments in local currency

Foreign stores quite often offer you to pay for the goods with your credit card with the currency of your country. Never do this! If this form of payment is very convenient, then you will need to pay huge interest for this convenience, or rather, for converting the currency into the local currency. Added to this type of "fraud" is the daily exchange rate. It turns out that the purchased item costs you exorbitant prices. So, remember that you need to pay for a product or service with the currency that is accepted in the country where you are!

7. Download the Google Maps and Google Translate Apps

In a foreign country, you very often find yourself in a situation where you simply do not understand what the interlocutor is asking you about. And even if you are very often in different countries, this does not guarantee the presence of minimum knowledge foreign languages. If you can somehow cope with English, then in China you definitely won’t get out of an uncomfortable position. In this case, you need to connect to such a technological innovation as Google Translate. This application can be downloaded for free and you can immediately translate into 90 languages of the world at your fingertips. The program is integrated with the Word Lens application, which allows the traveler to translate any typed text, including road signs, signs in museums, as well as menus in restaurants. … And all this without an internet connection. Well and Google Maps will become a faithful assistant for a landmark in the area.

Road signs are designed to facilitate the journey, because the road has long been considered dangerous place. Find out what not to do when traveling to long way and how to behave when leaving home.

What not to do before leaving

Do not wash the floor before leaving, otherwise you will not come back. In modern beliefs, you can’t wash your hair and, so as not to become inattentive and forgetful. They contain the vitality needed outside the home.

What you need to do before the road - beliefs for good luck

Hold on to the corner of the table for good luck. The dinner table at which the family gathers symbolizes the connection with the home. In the old days, they kissed him in order to quickly complete business in a foreign land and return to their native lands.

Beware of evil eye and envy. In the old days, when asked by acquaintances about the destination, they answered that they were going to kudykiny mountains . In modern realities, you can answer: "on business."

To protect against evil and fatigue, fresh and dry wormwood has long been taken on the road. It can be stored in shoes, talisman bag, wallet, suitcase. Poor orientation in unfamiliar places? Put your clothes on inside out, you won't go astray.

Good and bad road superstitions

Rain on the road is a good omen, especially if it started before leaving the house. Water washes away negativity. Earthworms are not very pleasant to look at, but their presence on the street brings good luck on the road.
