The mystery of the seas and oceans of the past is the mystery of history. The oceans reveal their secrets

The expanse of the World Ocean covers almost 71% of the earth's surface. However, scientists all over the planet managed to study only one tenth of this vast territory. What mysteries hide the vast expanses of water that have not yet been studied by people?

The fate of the giants

Modern geographers consider five giant water spaces as oceans: Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, Arctic and Southern (Antarctic). The Pacific Ocean ranks first in size - it occupies about 1/3 of the earth's surface. It was called quiet by Ferdinand Magellan, who during the entire time of sailing through its waters did not encounter a single even the slightest bit serious storm. The name has taken root, despite the true nature of the ocean element: strong storms and tsunamis regularly occur there, sending ships to the bottom along with their crews.

The second largest Atlantic Ocean has a no less bad temper. During the hurricane season in Caribbean at least two dozen cyclones with personal names are formed (a name is given to a cyclone if it is accompanied by a wind at a speed of at least 60 kilometers per hour), which destroy the coast of North America. In addition, the famous Bermuda Triangle is located in the Atlantic - a zone of disappearance without a trace. sea vessels and aircraft.

The Indian Ocean is famous for the fact that in 1938 they discovered coelacanth - the most ancient fish on the planet, the same age as dinosaurs. In addition to a living rarity, at the bottom of the ocean there is a mixture of a treasury with a museum: in the era of the Great geographical discoveries thousands of ships plied between Asia and Europe, and many of them, along with their cargo, found their last refuge on ocean floor.

The Arctic Ocean, although much smaller than its huge "brothers", but stores in its depths a quarter of the world's oil reserves. And the ill-fated iceberg that ruined the Titanic, although it met with the liner in the Atlantic, was born precisely in the waters of the Northern Arctic Ocean.

With regard to the Southern Ocean surrounding Antarctica, disputes are ongoing to this day - whether to consider it a separate body of water or only a continuation of the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian oceans. Be that as it may, these places are considered the coldest on the planet. It was there that the most low temperature on the ground -89.2 °С.

Each of the oceans annually brings amazing discoveries to people, but continues to hide an innumerable number of mysteries that, perhaps, will never be solved at all.

The Unprecedented Happens

The fact that most of the ocean spaces remain unexplored is confirmed by the presence of anomalous zones inside them, the action of which cannot be explained from the point of view of modern science. The most famous, but not the only one, is the Bermuda Triangle. Atlantic Ocean. Since 1918, more than 200 cases of the disappearance of ships and aircraft without a trace have been recorded there. The reason for their disappearance is called anything, from the Gulf Stream passing through the triangle, to the sunken Atlantis, the intervention of aliens and an interdimensional portal leading to other dimensions. However, none of the versions has strong evidence to consider it true.

There is also an anomaly in the Pacific Ocean - this is the Devil's Sea (it is also the Dragon's triangle, the Devil's, or Formosan, triangle), the exact coordinates of which oceanologists cannot deduce to this day. Since 1955, this territory has been officially recognized as an anomaly zone dangerous for navigation: it is not for nothing that it is also called a cemetery. Pacific Ocean. The Devil's Sea has swallowed up so many ships that even the frightening glory of the Bermuda Triangle fades next to its reputation. Travelers say that neither whales, nor dolphins, nor other marine life live in the waters of the Dragon's triangle, birds do not fly over it, therefore, it can be really dangerous for people.

Sometimes oceanic anomalous zones are located on land, but, according to experts, their environment generates body of water. One such place is the infamous Palmyra Atoll, located in the Pacific Ocean south of Hawaii. This small group of islands looks like a paradise, but many tragic and mysterious events are associated with it. The name of the atoll was received at the beginning of the 19th century by the name of the ship that crashed near it. Of the entire team, only ten people survived, and by the arrival of the ship that saved them, only three remained alive - they claimed that the island itself had destroyed the rest. For another century and a half, ships were systematically lost off the coast of Palmyra, and in the mid-1940s, an American military garrison was stationed there, which quickly became famous as a place that awakens horror or extreme aggression in soldiers. Once, a German plane was shot down right above the island, but no matter how they searched for its wreckage, they did not even find a screw, as if Palmyra had swallowed up its victim without a trace. Biologists have put forward a hypothesis that the island is a living evil entity that has power over everyone who sets foot on its shore. Today, Palmyra is uninhabited, which can be easily explained by its frightening history.

Kraken and others

Many creepy creatures live in ocean waters, their diversity is understandable - after all, the oceans are home to 4/5 of the species of life that exist on our planet. The name of one of the inhabitants ocean depths- Kraken - has been terrifying to sailors since Antiquity. Until now, there is no consensus on what species this monster should be attributed to - it is considered either a squid, or a cuttlefish, or an octopus. Traditions have been preserved detailed descriptions a monster with superintelligence and giant tentacles, capable of sinking any ship. The legend says that most time, the Kraken slumbers on the ocean floor, waiting for the water to swallow the entire planet, and he can single-handedly rule it water world. A rare case when science does not argue with legends: cryptozoologists do not exclude that a huge octopus is much older than the first person who appeared on earth, perhaps the last representative of the animal world of antiquity. Its habitat is considered to be the depths of the Arctic Ocean, and the cause of periodic awakenings is the melting of glaciers.

in the waters indian ocean you can meet a giant moray eel (aka Javanese hymnothorax), in addition to a repulsive appearance, with a bad temper, dangerous not only for its “neighbors”, but also for humans. This "beauty" can reach three meters in length and weigh up to 30 kilograms. A smooth body with a light speckled pattern allows her to hide in the stones in anticipation of the victim, catching which, the moray eel immediately swallows it whole.

One of the frightening inhabitants of the Atlantic is the striped catfish, or sea wolf. Scandinavian navigators believed that these fish are able to anticipate the death of the ship, they gather around it in advance in order to feast on human flesh after the wreck. Blue or brown sea wolves have such powerful teeth that neither crab shells nor shells in which mollusks hide are an obstacle for them. Every year, the catfish completely changes its teeth, and until they get stronger, it lies on the bottom and stops hunting. The period of abstinence lasts up to one and a half months, and only then the fish make up for lost time with interest.

300 Flying Dutchmen

No less dangerous than a collision with an ocean predator can be a meeting with the "Flying Dutchman". This is the name of the ghost ship, the crew of which consists of only the dead. Legend has it that they are cursed and must forever wander the seas and oceans, a meeting with such a vessel promises inevitable death to the ships. I must say that the chances of meeting one of these ghosts today have increased significantly - according to various estimates, the waters of the North Atlantic alone plow up to 300 ships inhabited by the dead or even without a team. Most of all they can be found in the remote ocean areas where there are no shipping lanes. It happens that ghost ships are thrown onto the shallows or rocks. But it is much worse if the "dead ships" that do not have running lights collide with ordinary ships - then they really bring death in full accordance with the legend.

History has preserved many evidence of the appearance of these mysterious ships. One of them is dedicated to the sailing ship "Seabird", which at full speed once crashed into the coast near the state of Rhode Island. Climbing on board the ship, the locals found that food was boiling in the pans in the galley, the table was laid in the saloon, but there was not a soul on the whole ship, except for a frightened dog. At the same time, both the cargo and the documents for it, and the entire ship situation were in perfect order, as if the crew had left the ship a few minutes ago. A whole investigation was carried out about the missing crew, but it did not bring any results.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the Marlboro ship was washed up to the shore of Tierra del Fuego by a storm. A real nightmare was happening on board: the desiccated bodies of the crew members lay all over the schooner. The sails and rigging were covered with a layer of mold, but the masts were completely preserved. The investigation found that 24 years ago the ship left Littleton for Glasgow, but never appeared at the port of arrival. It turned out that the sailboat had been drifting along the ocean waves for a quarter of a century, never getting into a storm or hitting the reefs.

Until now, humanity does not know what will bring full information about the oceans. The supposed list of mysteries lurking in the colossal depths is endless. At any moment, the ocean is ready to present its researchers with new amazing or frightening surprises.

The world's oceans are just as mysterious and unexplored in many ways as the cosmos. A person is trying to conquer Mars, while not even suspecting what is happening on his own planet. Many processes in the depths of the ocean and on its surface challenge scientists, who have not yet found a clear explanation for them. In this collection, I will tell you about 10 unsolved mysteries ah ocean.

devil sea

This treacherous area near Miyak Island in the Pacific has claimed more than 700 lives aboard Japanese warships. What caused their disappearance remains a mystery to this day.

Japanese Atlantis

In 1986 divers discovered a series of structures including pyramids called the Yonaguni Monument. 5 temples were discovered, the ruins of a stadium and a castle under water near the southern Japanese island Yonaguni. It is believed that these are the remains of a lost civilization. This mysterious prehistoric object is still surrounded by many secrets and mysteries.

Ghost ship

Captain Morehouse discovered the merchant sailing ship Marie Celeste drifting at sea on December 4, 1872. The ship was abandoned, but not a soul was on board. So far, no explanation has been found for this strange desertion. Ghost ships have joined the selection of the greatest unsolved mysteries of mankind.

Bermuda Triangle

One of the biggest mysteries in the Atlantic Ocean is the area of the Bermuda Triangle. In 1918, the USS Cyclops disappeared here. In 1945, five ships were lost, along with rescue aircraft that came looking for them. Many other ships disappeared in this region without any explanation.

Baltic anomaly

A device of unknown origin is at the bottom Baltic Sea. Any vessel that tries to pass near it is exposed to electromagnetic waves. The sensors receive a mysterious radio signal from the object, but so far no one has been able to pinpoint its nature.

milky sea

Bioluminescent bacteria create an amazing light effect in certain areas of the sea in the middle of the night. This mysterious milky light has inspired several famous nautical tales, but scientists have not yet reached a consensus on the source of the light.

giant squid

Squid weighing 1000 kilograms and 13 meters long was discovered in July 2012. Apparently, he can easily use his tentacles to grab a small boat and send it into his mouth. The presence of such monsters in the depths of the ocean was confirmed earlier.

Marine disappearances

In 1937, Emilia Earhart and her co-pilot Fred Noonan disappeared while flying over the Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Decades later, on March 8, 2014, Malaysian Airways MH370 also disappeared without any information as to its whereabouts.

Disappearing submarines

1968 was not exactly a good year for submarines. France, the USA, Israel and the USSR lost their submarines this year without determining the cause and place of the loss.

big booty

Huge white shark 4 meters long suddenly ate something much larger. Scientists studied all the data and came to the conclusion that it could be a predator, much larger than all those creatures that we knew about before.

Unforgettable woman of an extraordinary traveler

Jules Sebastien Cesar and Adele Dumont-Durville - the great traveler and his wife, an ordinary woman of the great traveler.
Dumont d "Urville, Jules-Sebastien-Cesar 1790 - 1842 French navigator and oceanographer, explorer of the Pacific and Antarctic.

In 1815 he married Adele Pepin, the daughter of a watchmaker. Surprisingly, I could not find a more or less complete biography of this woman, who had the mission to be the wife of the great traveler, Captain long-distance navigation, who apparently loved her so much that he named the new lands, islands and straits discovered by him, after her, Little is known about her and her life. It is known that they lived happily ever after and died on the same day. Jules, Adele and their son were killed in a train crash near Paris in 1842.
In 1819, Jules Sebastien Dumont-D'Urville was assigned to the ship "La Chevrette", on an expedition to explore mediterranean sea. Botany, entomology, archeology are entrusted to him.
In 1820, the Greek peasant Iorgos unearthed in Milos antique statue. Dumont-D'Urville examined it, but had no money to buy the statue and sold the statue to the priest Verga, who resold it to French concessionaires.
Thus, the statue ended up in France, in the Louvre, and became known as the Venus de Milo. Until now, there are disputes about what was the original position of the hands of Venus. And were they, by the way, when Iorgos found the statue. One of the most important testimonies belongs to Dumont-Durville: after all, he was among those few people who saw the statue back in those days when it was on the island. Here it is: "The statue (I measured both parts of it separately) ... depicted a naked woman who held an apple in her left raised hand, and with her right held a beautifully draped belt, casually falling from hips to legs." And then follows a phrase that caused a lot of talk: "In the rest, both arms are damaged and are currently taken away from the body." http://coollib.com/b/148589/read By "present" Dumont-D'Urville apparently meant the days when he was still on the island.
In 1820 he took part in a hydrographic expedition to the Mediterranean Sea. In 1822 he made circumnavigation on the ship "Coquiville" under the command of his friend Captain Duperi. Upon his return in 1825, he received the rank of frigate captain and was appointed commander of the Coqueville, which was renamed the Astrolabe (as one of the ships of the great French traveler La Perouse was called). On this ship, he again set off on a round-the-world voyage from Toulon in search of the missing La Perouse expedition. Prior to this, d'Entrecasteaux and the Englishman Peter Dillon were engaged in searching for the missing expedition. Even 13 years ago, Dillon came across some items that clearly belonged to the members of the La Perouse expedition. In 1826, he resumes the search, at the same time that Dumont-Durville sets out to search. In 1827, when they are both in Oceania

Dillon manages to find a few more items that belonged to French sailors: a piece of a globe, parts of astronomical instruments, pins, spikes, fragments of chains, a cannon, a bell with the mark of the master of Bazaine, that is, the workshop of the Brest arsenal, sculptures with the coat of arms of France, etc. Dumont- Durville, meanwhile, visits the island of Vanikoro, where all traces lead. More precisely, this is not an island, but a group of small islands surrounded by a reef. The islanders show him the place where the French ships sank. At the bottom, at a depth of several meters, sailors see cannons, cannonballs, anchors. All wooden parts are gone. These are objects from the "Astrolabe", "Bussol" could not be found. By using local residents sailors take out individual items, an anchor, a cannon, a bell, a blunderbuss. They build a monument out of coral slabs, fire a volley of guns.

The Dumont-D'Urville expedition explored the South Atlantic, the South Pacific, the coast of Australia, the King George Coast, Port Jackson, mapped various areas of New Zealand and New Guinea, visited the islands of Fiji, New Caledonia, the Carolines, Celebes, Mauritius and others
In 1837–1840 Dumont-D'Urville participated in a joint expedition to the Antarctic by the ships "Astrolabe" and "La Zele", during which Louis Philippe Land, Joinville Island, Adélie Land (named after Dumont-D'Urville's wife) were discovered. Expedition visited islands of Borneo, Tasmania, ports of Chile, performed a large amount of oceanographic research. IN hometown A bronze monument was erected to him in Kana, in the same city a lyceum bears his name. His name is also named: one of the streets in the 8th arrondissement of Paris, a mountain on the island of Auckland, one of the islands of the Joinville archipelago at the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, an island at the northern tip of the South Island ( New Zealand), a mountain on the Antarctic Peninsula, a 720-meter ice wall on the David Glacier on Victoria Land in Antarctica, a glacier on Grande Ter Island in the Kerguelen archipelago, a cape on the island New Guinea. He himself named the land he discovered in Antarctica in honor of his wife Adele Land, and the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson later called the sea washing this land the D'Urville Sea. Since 1956, the French Antarctic station Dumont d'Urville has been operating here. On a July morning in 1850, the inhabitants of the village of Eastons Beach on the coast of Rhode Island were surprised to see a sailing ship coming from the sea under full sail to the shore. It stopped in shallow water. When people boarded, they found that coffee was boiling on the galley stove, plates were arranged on the table in the saloon. But the only living creature on board was a dog trembling with fear, huddled in a corner of one of the cabins. Not a single person was on the ship.

Cargo, navigational instruments, maps, sailing directions and ship's documents were all in place. The last entry in the logbook said: "Beamed Brenton Reef" (this reef is only a few miles from Eastons Beach).

It was known that the Seabird sailed with a cargo of wood and coffee from the island of Honduras. However, even the most thorough investigation conducted by the Americans did not reveal the reasons for the disappearance of its crew from the sailing ship. Where have the people gone?

"Mary Celeste"

At noon on December 4, 1872, the sailing ship Mary Celeste was spotted from the English brig Dea Gracia, 600 miles west of Gibraltar. The ship was then brought to the wind, then again fell away, making intricate zigzags. To an experienced eye, it was clear that no one was steering the ship.
Soon sailors from the Dei Gracia boarded the brigantine. There was not a soul on deck. The wind howled through the torn foremast rigging, and the tattered sails cracked against the mast and yardarms. There was no lifeboat on the keel blocks.

On the table of the captain's cabin rested maps, directions, books. A brief entry in the logbook stated that the ship had safely reached almost the point where it had been spotted from the Dei Grazia.

It soon became clear that the chronometer, sextant and declination table of the sun were missing, and the ship's compass was lying broken in the corner of the cabin. In the desk drawer they found a significant amount of money, a box with women's jewelry. There was undoubtedly a woman on the brigantine: a sewing machine was found in the next cabin, on which lay an unfinished children's shirt.

Inspection of the sailor's quarters led the sailors into even greater bewilderment. The bunks were neatly removed, all the lockers were intact, and on the table lay ... half-smoked pipes!.

Found in the galley large stock fresh water, flour, corned beef, potatoes, vegetables, freshly baked bread…
In the hold, the sailors saw even rows of wooden barrels - they counted exactly 1700. There was alcohol in the barrels.
What could have happened to the crew? The commission appointed to investigate made many suggestions, including the most fantastic ones. So, for example, it was alleged that the crew of the brigantine fell victim to the attack of gigantic octopuses. The version about the rebellion of the team, the murder of the captain and his family seemed unlikely. Most likely, the commission suggested, for some reason the ship was abandoned by the crew, which subsequently either died at sea or was picked up by some ship. But several months passed, and the Mary Celeste team did not declare itself in any of the ports of the world. The Commission confessed that it was unable to offer any satisfactory solution to this story. And again there is no answer to the question: what happened to the people from the "Mary Celeste"?

"Abiy Ess Hart"

In September 1894, the three-masted barque Ebiy Ess Hart was spotted in the Indian Ocean from the German steamship Pikkuben. A distress signal fluttered from its mast. When the German sailors landed on the deck of the sailing ship, they saw that all 38 crew members were dead, and the captain went crazy.

» Freya»

On October 3, 1902, the German four-masted bard Freya left the Mexican port of Manzanillo. After 17 days, it was found half-flooded, with a strong roll to the port side. The topmasts of the sailboat's masts were broken, and the crew was absent. no storms at west coast Mexico was not observed at that time. The reasons for the disappearance of the crew remained unclear.

"Carroll Deering"

At eight ten minutes on January 31, 1921, a lighthouse keeper from Cape Hatteras spotted a large five-masted schooner. She was sitting on the outer edge of the Diamond Shoals. All her sails were removed, the lifeboats were gone. When the tug landed the emergency party on the Carroll Deering, it turned out that “there was no one on the schooner. Cargo, personal belongings of the team and provisions were intact. But the logbook, chronometer, sextants were absent. The ship's compass and part of the navigational instruments were broken, the steering was disabled. The reasons for the disappearance of the captain and nine sailors could not be explained. The only living creature found on the schooner was the ship's cat.

"Urang Medan"

In February 1948, merchant ships located in the Strait of Malacca near the island of Sumatra received a distress signal by radio: “SOS. Motor ship "Urang Medan". The ship continues to follow its course. Maybe all the members of our crew have already died.” Then came a series of incoherent dots and dashes, but at the end of the radiogram it clearly read: "I'm dying."

Soon the Dutch ship "Urang Medan" was discovered by English sailors. His entire team was dead. On the faces of the dead, an expression of horror froze.

The British wanted to tow the ship to the nearest port, but suddenly a fire broke out in its hold.
A few minutes later, a monstrous explosion thundered over the expanses of the Indian Ocean. Breaking in half, "Urang Medan", engulfed in thick clouds of smoke, disappeared into the abyss.

"Cholchu"

In February 1953, the sailors of the English ship "Rani", being two hundred miles from Nicobar Islands found in the ocean a small cargo ship"I want to." The ship was damaged by the elements, its mast was broken. Although the lifeboats were in place, the crew was absent. In the holds there was a cargo of rice, in the bunkers - a full supply of fuel and water. Where the five members of his crew disappeared is still a mystery.
And how many such ghost ships are still ocean waves? Will we ever know the causes of the tragedies? Hardly. Time and the ocean know how to keep their secrets...
A. BOCHEK, sea captain

Well, incidents that do not seem to find any explanation for themselves, in the entire history navy accumulated fairly. However, are they so inexplicable?

Take, for example, the case of Mary Celeste. middle 19th century the heyday of the sailing fleet of many countries of Europe and America. Ruthlessly exploiting seafarers, shipowners forced them to work 14-16 hours a day. Poor nutrition, disgusting living conditions, and assault often led the teams to rebellion, which, apparently, happened on the Mary Celeste. Having inflicted reprisals on the captain and not being able to stay on the ship, the crew, in fear of punishment, abandoned the ship, and she herself tried on some lifeboat get to the coast.

At first glance, the mysterious death of the "Seabird" seems unresolvable. But who was interested in the disappearance of the crew and the death of the ship? Of course, the shipowner, especially if the Seabird brig was old and unprofitable. The insurance premium seemed to tempt the captain into staging the tragedy. It is almost impossible to sink a ship loaded with timber and coffee. To receive insurance compensation, the crew had to disappear without a trace, and the ship mysteriously go ashore.

The most difficult thing to explain is the case of the barque Abiy Ess Hart. The death of the entire crew, with the exception of the captain, is an almost unbelievable event.

In 1909 I was in a group of cadets making an inventory of the islands of the Amur Estuary. A carpenter worked with us, a man of about sixty, an Estonian by nationality, very gloomy, gloomy and unsociable.
We knew that this man had been in hard labor for a long time, and we treated him tactfully and kindly. This softened him, and one day, sitting by the fire, he began to talk.

... The tragedy occurred in the seventies of the last century. At the age of 15, the carpenter entered as a cabin boy on a sailing ship sailing in the Baltic ... Then there was a vile custom on ships. The crew usually chose someone from the team for cruel jokes and ridicule, and often for beatings. And if this person could not defend his dignity with his fists, he was driven to the most extreme despair.

This is what happened to the carpenter. Unable to leave work due to need, the cabin boy decided to take revenge on his offenders by committing a crime. He poisoned the entire crew and himself moved ashore on a boat. The court sentenced him to a long exile on Sakhalin.

It is possible that something similar could have happened on the barge Abiy Ess Hart. The captain of the barque could avoid the common fate, since, perhaps, he did not take part in the persecution of a person who went to kill the crew. And being at sea with a dead crew on board could lead him to madness over time.
But there is nothing mysterious about the incident with the German barque Freya. Although the weather reports did not strong winds, the very fact of the loss of masts, the roll of the ship suggests that the ship was subjected to a severe squall and, being helpless, was swept into the open ocean. Radio communications did not yet exist at that time, and then there was almost no chance to meet any ship far from the coast of America. Therefore, it was decided to leave the ship and try to get to the shore on boats ...

Let us also explain the case of the American schooner Carroll Dearing. The ship had a slanting armament, the sails could be easily removed in a short time. But landing a ship on a shallow in the open ocean is very dangerous, so the crew left the schooner with such haste. In such cases, the ship's command takes with them a logbook for their justification and, of course, a sextant and a chronometer to determine their place in the sea.

The fact that the ship's compass and steering were damaged is a sure sign that the schooner was hit by ocean swell.

In the area of Cape Hatteras there is a strong constant current to the northwest. If at that time the wind was blowing from the shore, the boats from the schooner were carried away by the current into the open ocean, where they could die.
The sinking of the Dutch steamer "Urang Medan" looks very gloomy. But there are fewer secrets here. The steamer was loaded with poisonous chemicals, flammable and possibly mixed with some explosives. This cargo, apparently, was not hermetically sealed and began to penetrate in the form of gas into residential and office premises, resulting in the death of people, and then - from the explosion - and the ship.

Thus, almost all these mysterious and terrible occurrences can find quite real explanations.

THE TERRIBLE SILENCE OF INFRASOUND

All the cases described by L. Skryagin testify to the presence of some kind of single phenomenon, characterized by the following circumstances: from a ship that is still able to continue sailing, the entire crew and passengers, without exception, suddenly disappear. None of the disappeared people remain alive. “Something makes people disappear within a few, literally a few minutes, because before that everyone was busy with their own affairs, unaware of the danger. However, even the meager facts at our disposal allow us to discover the following three regularities:
1) the effect of the phenomenon is strictly localized by the sea basin;
2) almost all cases occurred in clear, relatively calm weather;
3) most cases occurred in winter (for this hemisphere) time.

At the beginning of the thirties, a play was staged in a theater, the action of which in the middle was unexpectedly transferred back three hundred years. In order to enhance the psychological impact on the audience and somehow portray the "heavy pace of the centuries", the director turned to the famous physicist Robert Wood for help.
Wood suggested using an ordinary organ pipe, but only of such dimensions that infrasound, which is not audible to the ordinary human ear, was emitted. The effect exceeded all expectations. When the trumpet started to work, the audience was seized with panic, and they rushed out of the theater. It seemed to them that an earthquake had begun and the building was about to collapse. Panic also gripped the residents of neighboring houses.

It is known that when a storm arises in the ocean on the shore, the condition of the sick deteriorates sharply, the number of suicides and traffic accidents increases. The culprit is infrasound.

In the reports of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1935, Academician Shuleikin came up with the theory of the occurrence of infrasonic oscillations in the ocean. During storms and strong winds above the wavy surface of the sea, a flow stall occurs on the crests of sea waves. In the air, not only transverse vibrations occur, but also longitudinal ones. The strength of the emerging infrasound is proportional to the square of the waves. With a wind speed of 20 meters per second, the power of the "voice of the sea" can reach 3 watts from each meter of the wave front. A relatively small storm generates infrasound with a power of tens of kilowatts! The main radiation of infrasound is approximately in the range of 6 hertz. Experiments have shown very weak scattering of infrasound with distance. In principle, it can propagate without significant attenuation for hundreds and thousands of kilometers both in air and in water, and the speed of the water wave is several times higher than the speed of the air wave.

IN Lately reports appeared in the press about the experiments of Professor Gavro. New facts about the biological activity of infrasound were presented. Professor Gavro suggested that the cause of this phenomenon is the coincidence of the frequencies of infrasound and the alpha rhythm of the brain. Infrasounds of certain frequencies can cause a person to feel tired, melancholy, seasick, lead to loss of vision and even death:
“... Infrasound with a frequency of 7 hertz is fatal to a person ... you can stop the heart by choosing the phase of infrasound accordingly ...”

So, powerful infrasonic vibrations are generated in the sea with an average frequency of 6 hertz, and already a frequency of 7 hertz is deadly for humans. But suddenly there are conditions under which the frequency of the "voice of the sea" will be slightly different from the usual one, with all the ensuing consequences? A ship can be caught by an infrasonic wave in a completely calm area, and if the frequency of the incoming radiation is 7 hertz, the death of the entire crew occurs suddenly, and the most careful examination will not reveal the cause of death - because it comes from cardiac arrest. At frequencies other than 7 hertz, effects similar to insanity attacks are possible. Mechanical resonance with the ship's hull or masts is also possible, when the crew suddenly finds themselves, as it were, on a giant shaker. Not without reason on many ships with the missing crew, the masts turn out to be broken, although weather reports indicate the absence of strong winds in the area.

Dozens of ships have now been found with missing crew or dead on board. Perhaps this list should also include some submarines that disappeared under strange circumstances, which are even more susceptible to the action of an infrasonic wave, since infrasound travels even longer distances in water. Infrasound is ubiquitous. It spreads almost equally well in solid, liquid and gaseous media. It would seem that emptiness, vacuum, can become the only obstacle for it, so such a danger should not seem to threaten spaceships.

Unfortunately, it is not. Astronauts (and the ship) are subjected to low-frequency vibrations of significant amplitude both during takeoff and when the spacecraft returning to Earth enters the dense layers of the atmosphere. The dimensions of modern spacecraft are such that resonant oscillations at biologically dangerous frequencies can occur in them. This circumstance must be taken into account in their design and bench tests. Otherwise, silent ships may appear in space.

Currently, there are already stations for receiving infrasound that occurs during storms and underwater earthquakes. Even in the case of a tsunami with a speed jet aircraft(700-800 km / h), an infrasonic wave in water travels the same path 7 times faster.

Such stations could warn ships about the appearance of infrasound with a life-threatening frequency.
In any case, if such a phenomenon does occur in the ocean, it requires careful and urgent investigation.

The ocean is a mysterious element that holds many inexplicable secrets. Only a small part of the researchers managed to find out and solve some riddles deep waters. But humanity still has many discoveries related to this water element. It is quite possible that people will find out where ships disappear in the Bermuda Triangle and see the world's largest animal living in the depths of the ocean.

Water occupies 70% of the Earth's surface, and today there are still a lot of unsolved mysteries of the ocean. This article presents three mysteries of the oceans of greatest interest.

Big Killer Wave

People living near the sea or ocean know how to determine that a wave is approaching the shore and manage to evacuate the inhabitants of nearby settlements in time or send fishing boats to the open sea. But in open waters you can meet something terrible - this is a big killer wave, also known as a rogue wave. It can reach from 20 to 30 meters in height, sometimes more, it appears unexpectedly and terrifies even experienced sailors. Experienced fishermen cannot predict its appearance, and all that remains is to pray that the ship does not capsize and drown, and that all who are on it can safely survive this disaster.

Rogue Wave Destructive Power

A big killer wave can easily sink not only fishing vessels, but also supertankers, which, it would seem, nothing can harm. The killer wave covers everything that comes in its path. Under such pressure, the hull of the vessel does not withstand, and it instantly disappears under the water column.

It is almost impossible to study the killer wave and the reasons for its sudden appearance. To learn the secrets of the oceans, scientists have to speculate and hypothesize based on the stories of eyewitnesses who miraculously survived a collision with a wave.

One day, scientists will be able to understand the reasons for its sudden appearance and, therefore, predict dangerous places where the killer wave is raging. But when this will happen is still unknown, and sailors going out into the open waters pray not to meet a killer wave on their way and return home to their families.

Bermuda Triangle

For more than a hundred years, a place called the Bermuda Triangle or the Devil's Triangle scares and attracts people at the same time. In this zone, more than a hundred ships and aircraft disappeared without a trace, more than a thousand people disappeared. Their remains have never been found.

The territory of the Devil's Triangle is delineated by three points: Puerto Rico, Florida, and Bermuda, thanks to which it got its name, but disappearances are also noted outside the designated border.

Several documentaries and feature films have been made about the Bermuda Triangle. Every year this place grows big amount myths and legends, and therefore it is sometimes difficult for scientists to convey the discoveries made to mankind. It's easier for people to believe unexplained disappearances than in scientific evidence.

Unsolved mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle

Scientists have not unraveled all the secrets of the ocean, the Bermuda Triangle keeps many of them. Until now, most of the aircraft and ships that disappeared in the anomalous zone have not been found. And there are countless speculations about what happened to them.

  • One of the versions is based on the fact that the Bermuda Triangle is located on the site of former volcanoes. And with small seismic vibrations, bubbles filled with methane rise from the bottom. They can reach large sizes and, falling between them, the ship ceases to float and goes to the bottom. And if it hits the bubble itself, the entire crew dies of gas poisoning. All that remains is an empty ship drifting in the open waters of the ocean.
  • Another version of the mystery of the oceans is the presence in anomalous zone infrasonic waves. Falling under their influence, a person cannot concentrate, panic overcomes him, and hallucinations may even appear. Under such pressure, the crew members can not stand it and throw themselves overboard, which leads to their death.
  • There is speculation that the Bermuda Triangle is a UFO base. Several cases have been recorded when eyewitnesses talk about the appearance of round flying objects. They either hid under the water, or, leaving it, disappeared over the horizon.

And these are far from all versions of the disappearance of people who fell into the Bermuda Triangle. The secret of the depths of the ocean will someday be revealed.

Pyramid underwater

Every year, scientists put forward more and more new assumptions about the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, and, quite possibly, humanity will soon find out where thousands of people have disappeared without a trace. The explanation for this may be another mysterious phenomenon that was discovered in the area of the Devil's Triangle. Studying its bottom, scientists stumbled upon a pyramid that is several times larger than the pyramid of Cheops. Taking a closer look at it, the scientists found that the material from which the structure was made resembles polished ceramics or glass, but is not one of them.

The Bermuda Triangle holds many mysteries and secrets, and it is not known when scientists will open the veil and tell humanity the reasons for the disappearance of aircraft and ships. And this is not all the secrets of the depths of the oceans.

Mariana Trench

The Mariana Trench is located in the waters of the Pacific Ocean, near the Mariana Islands. It is the deepest depression known to mankind. This is where the most hidden mysterious secrets Pacific Ocean.

For many years, only its approximate depth was known, but as a result of several measurements, scientists came to the conclusion that the Challenger Abyss (the most deep point Mariana Trench) is located at 10994 meters with an accuracy of ±40 meters below sea level. These figures are amazing, because the bottom of the depression is further from sea level than the top of Mount Everest.

The Mariana Trench was formed due to the displacement of 2 lithospheric plates - the Pacific and the Philippine. The Pacific plate is older and heavier than the Philippine one, and therefore, when moving, it crawls under it, thus forming the deepest and most mysterious hollow in the world.

Discovery of the depths of the ocean

There were several dives to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, and during these processes more and more new discoveries happen, the secrets of the oceans do not cease to interest people. For example, scientists assumed that life stops at a depth of more than 6,000 km, that under such conditions, in total darkness and under enormous pressure, not a single marine animal or fish could survive. But what was their surprise when a fish was found at the very bottom of the Mariana Trench. Outwardly, she looked like a flounder. When diving to the bottom of the Mariana Trench, scientists were able to make many discoveries, but much remains a mystery hidden under the water column.

monster from the abyss

people tell incredible stories, in which the sailors saw a large monster in the area of the Challenger Abyss. It was not possible to examine it well, but the appearance of a marine inhabitant did not go unnoticed. According to eyewitnesses, the script for the documentary "Secrets of the Ocean" was created, the film turned out to be interesting and attracted a lot of attention to an unsolved phenomenon.

During one of the scientific dives, scientists heard a sound resembling metal grinding, and the cameras recorded the appearance of an unusual shadow resembling a dragon from a fairy tale. After a little thought and deciding not to risk expensive equipment, the apparatus was raised to the surface. What was the surprise of all members of the team when they saw how the super-strong metal of the device was deformed, and the steel cable 20 cm wide was half sawn. Who or what wanted to leave the module forever at the bottom of the Mariana Trench remains a mystery, the answer to which humanity will not know when it will receive, and whether it will receive it at all.

The underwater world is striking in its size, it hides a lot of mysterious and inexplicable, but I want to believe that someday scientists will be able to unravel all the secrets and mysteries of the world's oceans.
