History of creation

About 17 thousand years ago, on the site of the Rybinsk reservoir was glacial lake. Gradually, it became shallow, and a vast Mologo-Sheksna lowland arose.

Rybinsk reservoir was planned as the largest artificial lake in the world! It is formed by water-retaining structures of the Rybinsk hydroelectric complex, located in the northern part of Rybinsk. The capacity of the Rybinskaya HPP is 346 MW. The construction of the hydroelectric complex began in 1935 near the village of Perebory, at the confluence of the Sheksna and the Volga. In the autumn of 1940, the Volga channel was practically blocked, and on April 13, 1941, it was completely blocked and the filling of the reservoir bowl began. To complete the work, more than 600 villages and the city of Mologa had to be relocated to new places. Filling lasted longer than planned - until 1947 - due to the fact that during the years of the Great Patriotic War water was dumped to the lowest levels for maximum electricity generation.

After achieving the main goals at the time of the creation of the Rybinsk reservoir: energy and transport (shipping), the question arose of supplying the central part of Russia with fish. In order to study the ichthyofauna and stocking of the Rybinsk reservoir in 1952, the Institute of Biology was established. inland waters Russian Academy Sciences, which was headed by the legendary polar explorer Ivan Dmitrievich Papanin. To date, the ichthyofauna of the Rybinsk reservoir and animal world the surrounding territories is among the ten richest and most diverse in Russia.

The most diverse family of cyprinid fish is represented: blue bream, bream, white-eyed fish, quicksand, bleak, asp, silver bream, golden crucian carp, silver carp, podust, common carp, gudgeon, chub, ide, dace, sabrefish, roach, tench, lake and common minnow. The main types of fish caught in the reservoir are: bream, roach, blue bream, smelt, burbot, pike, zander, perch. Thanks to this, the Rybinsk reservoir is very popular among fishermen. There are several hunting grounds along the banks, fishing bases and many recreation centers providing their services to tourists, vacationers, and fishermen-hunters.

When preparing for fishing on Rybinsk, it is interesting to see data on the water level in the reservoir and the surrounding rivers, both at the present time and with charts from previous years. And without fishing, there is also something to be curious about.

The Rybinsk Reservoir is one of those attractions that everyone has heard about at least once. And it well deserves it.

The Rybinsk Reservoir is an artificially created reservoir on the Volga and its tributaries - the Sheksna and the Mologa. It was built between 1935 and 1940. as part of the construction of the Rybinsk hydroelectric complex - a large system that included the Rybinsk hydroelectric power station. The project turned out to be typical of the late 30s: expensive, economically inefficient and destroyed everything in its path. This was due to his ambitiousness: it was planned to create the largest man-made lake peace. Released to flood vast areas arable land and forests, hundreds of villages, several cities, six monasteries and much more, forcibly resettled 130 thousand inhabitants. The region was ancient, so there were a lot of irreparable losses during flooding.

Sterlet is still found in the Rybinsk Reservoir, as well as eels, catfish, burbots, pike perches, carp, and all ordinary river fish.

Now it is a huge (more than 4.5 sq. km) lake of bizarre shape and indescribable beauty. Its shores are gently sloping and often peaty, it is surrounded by old forests and swamps. The coastline is very uneven, there are many bays, small bays and channels. Tiny islands are scattered across the lake - once they broke away from the shore, but did not fall apart, but began to live their own lives.

When the water subsides (in a hot summer or when water is drained into a reservoir), flooded buildings protrude from under it: destroyed church bell towers, crumbling cathedrals of monasteries, the remains of city buildings. The spectacle is somewhat gloomy - for an amateur, let's say so.

They come here mainly lovers of outdoor recreation. There are great opportunities for them here: you can walk through the forests, pick mushrooms and berries, you can swim on the lake by boat (for example, get to one of the islands or ride along the coast), you can just swim - the water here is quite warm in summer, and the beaches are small, but mostly sandy.

The most frequent visitors are hunters and fishermen, for them there is a lot of things here. Sterlet is still found in the Rybinsk Reservoir, as well as eels, catfish, burbots, pike perches, carp, and all ordinary river fish. There are many wildlife in the region, especially near the Darwin Reserve. There are wolves, bears, lynxes, elks, wild boars, a lot of smaller animals and a lot of birds, including rare ones.

Be careful in the forest. The wolves and bears here are not cartoonish, harmlessly cute, but real, ordinary ones, and you can serve them as lunch. Be careful yourself and be sure to keep an eye on the children.

Practical information

There are many old towns around the lake.

There are many recreation centers, campsites, small private hotels and private owners renting housing in the surrounding villages and along the shores of the lake. Prices are low.

The easiest way to get here is by train - the most convenient ones go from the Yaroslavsky railway station in Moscow to the city of Cherepovets or from Belorussky railway station to the city of Rybinsk, they are right on the shore. You can also take a train or bus to Vologda or Yaroslavl, and from there local transport to get to Cherepovets or Rybinsk. You can also go by car.

It is usually noticeably cooler around the reservoir than away from it.
