Djerba - the island from the Odyssey

Djerba Island is one of the most stunning resorts in Tunisia. You can go here even in winter, if you miss the summer - here almost all year round the same warm water.

Djerba is loved for its mild climate, pure sea water, sandy beaches, modern hotels, a lot of attractions and nightlife.

Remember Homer's Odyssey? So, according to the legend, main character with their sailors once visited this island. They were so struck by the Lotofagi (the people who lived here) that they did not even want to leave. Since then, they say that who has visited Djerba once, he will definitely return here.

If you want to take a walk - go ahead! Here is a huge coastline extending over a hundred kilometers. The island is an important center of fishing life. In restaurants and cafes largest city The Houmt Souk Islands offer amazing fresh-caught fish dishes. They are savored with date liqueur or good wine.

I advise you to visit the ancient Medina - a city with narrow streets and shops, in which you feel like in an old labyrinth. Here, Jews live peacefully side by side with Muslims, and the cultures and traditions of these peoples have intertwined over the years.

Be sure to get acquainted with the ancient synagogue of Gribu and three mosques. The fortress of Borj Gazi Mustafa is very interesting, as well as the museum folk art and traditions.

The cost of rest on Djerba. October 2018.

tour cost

In October 2018 during school autumn holidays we decided to extend our summer a bit and visit the island of Djerba with the whole family. Bought package tour, including flight from Moscow regular flight Red Wings airlines to Djerba and back, accommodation in Hotel Royal Garden Palace 5 * for 12 days (13 nights) for three adults, transfer from Zarzis airport, located directly on the island itself, and return transfer from the hotel to the airport, Three meals a day according to the system Buffet" and medical insurance with an insurance sum of $40,000 for each. The total cost of the tour was 175,000 rubles ($2,666). A pleasant and unexpected bonus was the offer in the form of two free visits to the "a la carte" restaurants located on the territory of the hotel and offering dishes of national Tunisian cuisine and Italian cuisine. Also hotel guide offered a private free transfer from the hotel to the nearest city of Midoun with visits to shopping malls for shopping.

In Djerba, all prices are in local currency - dinars, the rate of 1 dinars is approximately 22 Russian rubles. Excursions around the island could be ordered directly from the hotel guide, or bought on the spot, which we chose, since the island is quite small and you can move around it quite safely and quite cheaply by taxi. Park visit Djerba explore cost us 45 dinars for three plus the cost of a taxi there and back 14 dinars. However, the cost of one ticket (15 dinars) includes visiting several objects at once: the tourist market, the Heritage village, the Lella Hadria Museum and the crocodile farm, so it’s more profitable to book more than one excursion, but to take complex ticket already in place. Another unusual place on Djerba, this is the place Jerbahood, famous for its graffiti. A round trip by taxi cost 30 dinars. Inspection and photography of wall paintings - free of charge and without any restrictions. A visit to the El-Ghriba Synagogue, one of the oldest in the region, over two thousand years old, will also be inexpensive. In fact, at the entrance to it, the minister asks to leave a symbolic fee for the needs of the temple. Each of us paid 5 dinars, and the trip to the synagogue and back by taxi cost 20 dinars.

Food and products

To be honest, the food at the hotel was so good, both in terms of the quality of the food and its variety, that the thought of eating somewhere else did not even arise, we simply did not have time to get hungry. However, while shopping in Midoun City, we went to local cafe to taste real Tunisian coffee. A small cup of black coffee cost 7 dinars, a plate with dates and national sweets 12 dinars. Products in stores are relatively cheap, while there are many goods of both local and French origin, because Tunisia is a former French colony. In the Carrefour supermarket, local red wine 0.7 liters costs an average of 9-12 dinars, a box of dates weighing 500 grams - 15 dinars, 350 grams - 9 dinars, extra virgin olive oil with a volume of 0.5 liters costs 15 dinars, a can of tuna in olive oil 250 grams - 6 dinars, a box of oriental sweets such as nougat with various types nuts and spices weighing 500 grams - 19 dinars. It is worth noting that alcohol is sold only in special shops "Generals", and in the city of Midoun it can be purchased in a newly built mall noor mall. Local red wine 0.7 liters costs an average of 9-15 dinars, local vodka - 0.7 liters of booze costs 34 dinars.

Souvenirs and other goods

The cost of clothes and souvenirs in shops and in the market is very different. Moreover, it is impossible to bargain in shops, but in the markets it is impossible not to bargain, since the initial price is at least three times higher. So, a women's leather bag can be bargained for 25 dinars, with its initial cost of 120. A men's leather handbag like a handbag cost us 65 dinars (instead of 175). Jewelry is quite expensive, for example, a turquoise silver pendant costs 75 dinars, but if you take something else, earrings or a ring, feel free to ask for a 30% discount on both items. Men's cotton polo shirt good quality costs at least 35-45 dinars, a set national clothes- tunic embroidered with ornaments and sequins with trousers 65 dinars.

Cost of services and entertainment

Various entertainments were offered on the beach: a camel ride along the beach costing 20 dinars, riding an inflatable sofa - 60 dinars, renting a jet ski for two for 15 minutes - 90 dinars. The cost of a taxi, both when ordering from the hotel reception, and when self-catching on the road is the same - 4 dinars to the nearest town of Midoun (about 5 km). A visit to the hotel's SPA center, depending on the procedures, costs from $60 for one massage session to $250 if you buy services in the form of a subscription from several visits.

The name of the city is translated as "market quarter" and reflects its bazaar spirit. These streets with old houses beautiful squares, arcades entwined with greenery and sea port good to look around during a long walk.

Sights of Djerba

Tourists choose historical and religious sights of Djerba for excursions. It is worth saying that on the island you can see more than two hundred mosques. One of the most famous is the ancient Abu Messwer. The architectural sights of Djerba are represented by the Borj el-Kebir fort. This building, built at the end of the 13th century, is located in the city of Houmt Souk. Having taken a photo while visiting this attraction of Djerba, you can capture ancient monument architecture.

In Houmt Souk you can visit and local history museum countries. It is located in the mausoleum of Sidi Zitouni and contains many antiques, including jewelry, ceramics and other artistic items.

The Mushroom Synagogue, located in the Jewish quarter of Houmt Souk, is considered one of the oldest on the planet. It was erected back in the 6th century, which makes this landmark of Djerba of global importance. Fragments of the original ancient building preserved as remains of walls and foundations. In addition, inside this attraction of Djerba you can see the ancient Torah and the burial place of Shimon Bar Yashai, who was one of the creators of the Talmud.

Having visited ethnographical museum Gellala, you can learn the traditions and customs of the Tunisian people. In particular, tourists are told about local rituals on the occasion of the birth of children or weddings. Natural attractions of Djerba are represented by olive groves in the east of the island. Some trees are over 100 years old. Tourists also like to visit the crocodile farm, where you can see predators from the banks of the Nile. In total, about four hundred crocodiles live on the farm.

Easy to navigate memorable places Arrivo's map of Djerba attractions will help.

Please note that as soon as you get to the beautiful sunny island Djerba, then almost immediately or a little later you will come under close attention local guides, which have already prepared for you a very impressive list of excursions and entertainment. To begin with, a hotel guide will take care of your processing, so to speak, and then local enthusiasts will be added to it, who will vying with each other offer you everything the same, but only much cheaper. Do not immediately agree to all these tempting offers. The fact is that there are a number of places on Djerba where you can go completely on your own, without spending big and so necessary money on vacation.

First of all, we are talking about the popular crocodile farm here. By the way, not only crocodiles live here. There are really a lot of them here - somewhere around 4,500 thousand toothy "cuties". In general, this is a pretty decent complex, which includes not only a farm, but also a museum along with a Berber village.

For the entrance to the complex you will have to pay only 15 dinars. Well, since a taxi in Djerba is a very cheap way to travel, then from the hotel closest to the farm you will have to pay about 2-3 dinars for such a trip. Therefore, it is quite possible to go here on your own. All the same, the guides will not take you to the museum, and they will not tell you anything special. Just find out in advance when and at what time the crocodiles are feeding, because the most interesting action here is watching how the crocodiles en masse get out of the water and immediately pounce on the decomposed pieces of meat.

Most of all, of course, the huge number of these creatures is striking. After this show, children usually love to be photographed with little crocodiles. They are extraordinarily cute creatures, like all babies. Well, the village is so ordinary - a few houses where you can get acquainted with the economy and life of the Berbers.

You can also see a diligent camel there, which is engaged in extracting water for irrigation. You can also take a picture with him for a couple of dinars. The museum itself is quite small, you can go into it, just read at least something about it in advance, otherwise it will be completely incomprehensible.

It is best to go on an excursion to the Gelala Ethnographic Museum with Russian speaking guide, they usually tell a lot interesting stories from the life of the Berbers. The museum is quite large and interesting, even children never get bored there. Not only in the house itself, but also in each of its rooms, not only the very life of the local residents, but also their daily activities and way of life are imprinted. You will have to pay 7 dinars to enter the museum.

Next to the museum is a pottery workshop. This, however, is not surprising, because the village of Gelala has long been considered the center of pottery on the island of Djerba. After visiting the museum, tourists are usually led to show a pottery workshop, where you can get acquainted with the process of making pottery. Just do not buy these very products in the shop at the workshop, because the prices here are high. All the same can be bought in any market two to three times cheaper.

The next place that you can also visit on your own is the Borj el Kebir fortress. The fortress began to be built in the middle of the sixteenth century, when real threat invasion of Spanish troops on the island of Djerba. Arab builders coped with the task very successfully and the fortress withstood the siege with dignity. This lasted for 80 days, after which the Spaniards had to admit defeat.

The entrance to the territory of the fortress costs only 7 dinars, there is nothing special to see here. It is simply interesting to climb and admire the wonderful views from the walls of the fortress. After visiting the fortress, it is quite possible to walk to the pier, where "pirate" ships are moored, which are simply eager to take vacationers to wild islands. If you are going on such a trip, then keep in mind that the “wild” islands are actually far from being like that and you will not find any landscapes in the “bounty” style there even close. But for children, such excursions with animation and treasure hunts are very, very interesting.

Without excursions and guides, you can also completely go to the Mushroom synagogue in Riyadh. It is literally a few kilometers from the city of Humpt Souk. It is very ancient - it is already more than two thousand years old, therefore it is rightfully considered the oldest on the African continent. There is a very ancient belief that it was erected on the very place where a heavenly stone fell from heaven to earth. And yet - as soon as the last Jew leaves the island of Djerba, the keys to the synagogue will immediately return to paradise.

There are special rooms for pilgrims who come here after the Passover holiday. In the sanctuary of the synagogue, one can see the carefully preserved ancient scroll Torah is the most famous relic. And here it is very interesting to look at a tiny room with fragments of the Wailing Wall. It is best to come here early in the morning and without any excursions.

You can also freely visit the Fadloun Mosque - one of the smallest, but the most visited mosques in Tunisia. It is located in the Midoun area. Interior spaces mosques are simple and austere, there are no decorations, stucco or mosaics. Just pure white walls. Surprisingly, even the niche that indicates the direction of Mecca does not have any decorations.
