Lindos is the original character of the Rhodes resort. Lindos is one of the best cities in Rhodes

I continue my "Rhodes notes". Today I will start a story about a wonderful town called Lindos, which is located in the southeast of the island of Rhodes.

Lindos is a very ancient settlement: here is the second largest and most important (after the Athenian) greek acropolis. A powerful fortress, built at one time by the Ionite knights, has also been preserved here. And the town itself with its white houses and narrow intricate streets is very colorful. All this, combined with the unusually picturesque Mediterranean landscapes, resulted in me in a very a large number of photos. So I decided to split the photo report about Lindos into two parts. The first will be an introduction to Upper city- this is the Acropolis, the fortress, views of the Lower City and the sea. And in the second part there will be a photo walk along the streets of Lindos itself ...

I went to Lindos on my own, since from where I lived, you can get to Lindos without any problems. A regular bus runs in this direction approximately 1 time per hour, in addition, the bus stop was located a stone's throw from mine. The bus journey takes about forty minutes, the fare is 4.8 euros one way (in June 2017).

Since I read on the net that the entrance to the Acropolis starts at 8.00 in the morning, by this time I went - this is the time and there are not many people at all, and it is not very hot yet.

Stop in Lindos is still almost deserted

This is the Rhodes-Lindos highway. On the other side of Faliraki and Rhodes

And on that side, the southern tip of the island -

There is a church next to the bus station. In whose name, though, I don't know.

To get into old Lindos you need to go from the motorway down the road. Donkeys - a local "taxi" - go to work.

The area here is mountainous. The eye clings to some recesses in the rock. Perhaps this is some ancient building. Maybe a bridge, or maybe a rock temple or a monastery.

Since the Acropolis is located on a high rock at an altitude of about 100 meters above the city, for some, this climb can be difficult. Therefore, you can go up there by riding with a breeze in a local "taxi", i.e. on a donkey. The cost of this attraction is 6 euros. In the meantime, the parking of the local "taxi" in anticipation of the influx of tourists.

But I decided to rise with my legs.

Along the way, different picturesque views opened up every now and then.

Snow-white houses of Lindos remain below

Rooftop cafes are very common here.

And of course, very beautiful bays. This bay is called the Gulf of Lindos. There is a large public beach here. On the other side of the cliff there is another picturesque bay - St. Paul's. (about her - a little further)

On a fairly large section of the ascent, local needlewomen offer to buy the fruits of their labors - napkins, tablecloths, embroidered towels, etc.

Everything just lies on the rocks

We approach the entrance to the Acropolis ... A ticket to visit costs 12 euros.

The Acropolis of Lindos - the second largest and most important in Greece - is the main attraction of Lindos. Today you can see monuments of several eras here. On the territory of the Acropolis, the remains of a small ancient temple of Athena Lindia, a shrine revered by the Greeks, the remains of a water gallery, and monuments of the necropolis, have survived to this day. There are remains of Byzantine buildings here. And all this is surrounded by a powerful wall erected by the Knights of St. John, who turned Lindos into one of the most powerful fortresses at the time of their rule on the island.

At the entrance to the Acropolis there is a unique petroglyph - a bas-relief of an ancient Greek warship by the sculptor Pythocrates, which testifies to the maritime significance of Rhodes in the ancient period: since ancient times, Lindos has been a crossing point for sea routes.

By the way, another famous work sculptor Pythocrates - Nike of Samothrace is located in Paris.

Of course, looking at the buildings of the Acropolis, you need to keep in mind that for the most part it is the result of the restoration that the Italians did in the 1920s and 30s of the twentieth century.

Temple of Athena Lindia

The Acropolis offers stunning views of the Mediterranean expanses and a small picturesque bay of St. Paul

In the next part, when there is a photo walk around Lindos, we will reach this bay too...

View of the city from the Acropolis

In the distance one can see another "failure" in the rock, which was once a kind of structure...

Down in the city you can see the Church of the Virgin with a bell tower

some square with a tree

and rooftop cafes

To the New Amphitheater, which is located next to the ancient Amphitheater

It will serve as a good guide for us, so that later we can go to St. Paul's Bay

Let's wander a little more among the ancient ruins

Remains of a Byzantine church

Inspection of the Acropolis came to an end. It's time to descend "from heaven to earth" ...

On the way back we return to Lindos, where we will walk a little more along its narrow picturesque streets. But more on that in the next post...

Even for such an ancient country as Greece, the history of the small town of Lindos on the island of Rhodes is unusual. According to one version, the city-state of Lindos was founded by the Dorians in the 10th century BC. There is a version that the city is 27 centuries old.

The mention of the city is in Homer and Herodotus. There were three ancient cities - Lindos, Kameiros and Ialliasos, of which only Lindos has survived. Only ruins remain of the other two.

Lindos was one of the participants in the Trojan War and is mentioned in the Iliad.
Lindos was famous city ancient world. The city with a beautiful port, consisting of two closed bays, located at the intersection of sea routes, was the center of trade in the Mediterranean.

Important maritime significance The city is confirmed by a petroglyph - a bas-relief depicting an ancient Greek warship. The author of the work is the sculptor Pythocrates. It is no coincidence that it was in Lindos that the very first known code of maritime law, the famous Rhodes Code of Navigators, was created and ratified.

Lindos was a very influential and wealthy city. He was known for his fleet, navigators. The city was not able to capture the powerful Persians, and Alexander the Great. But against the power of the Roman Empire, the city was powerless. During Roman rule, Christianity appeared on Lindos.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Lindos became part of the Byzantine Empire. Since that time, the golden age of Lindos has ended. The city was turned into a fortress, which was used by the Byzantines, the Ionite knights and, finally, the Turks. All eras have left their mark on the architecture of the Acropolis.

How to get there

separates from the center of Lindos 55 kilometers. But there is no direct way. You can get to Lindos from the airport by bus, taxi or rental car.

Another option for the road to Lindos is the ferry from the port of Rhodes. But the road by sea is obviously longer than the land. In addition, Lindos hotels are often located a few kilometers from the port, and upon arrival there you still have to take a taxi.

The most economical way is, of course, the bus. There is tourist information about direct bus from the airport to Lindos. But finding the price and schedule is possible only upon arrival at the airport, and these flights are quite rare. It is easier and more reliable to get from the airport to the city of Rhodes, which will take 15-20 minutes and costs 2.20 euros, in Rhodes take a bus to Lindos.

There are 7 such flights per day, and 6 of them are in the interval from 6.45 to 14.30, last flight at 19.30. The fare is 5 euros, travel time 1 hour 20 minutes.

Tickets are a little more profitable to take at kiosks at bus stops, but drivers also sell them. Tickets must be kept, because. there are controllers on the lines, and the fine for stowaway significant.

A taxi ride from the airport to Lindos will cost from 4851 rubles, depending on the class of car.

Many hotels provide a paid shuttle service to the hotel. This should be clarified in advance.

Where to stay

The city of Lindos, made up of white, crowded houses, leaves little room for the construction of hotels. Therefore, almost all Lindos hotels are located outside the city.

For tourists who want to spend time not only on the beach, this is a certain inconvenience. When choosing a hotel in Lindos, be sure to pay attention to the distance from the center.

In the center of ancient Lindos, on a high rock, is the Acropolis.. This architectural masterpiece of world significance was built in the 2nd century BC. After this is the largest Acropolis in Greece.

The center of the Acropolis is the temple of Athena of Lindos, famous far beyond the borders of Rhodes, built according to Homer in the 14th century BC. Danem. Danai was the son of the Egyptian king Bel, and is considered the ancestor of the Danaans. The temple, according to legend, was built by Danai with his 50 daughters when they hid here from anger. The great Alexander the Great came to this temple to bow to the goddess.

The original Acropolis was much larger. It combined defensive and cultural functions. There were many temples, a square, amphitheatres, warehouses with water and food supplies.

The ascent to the Acropolis is quite steep. But you can use the services. Their "services" are valued at 5 euros.

An amazing ancient theater is carved right into the rock. In the time of the Hellenes, all the buildings of the Acropolis were a single ensemble, an excellent example of ancient Greek architecture.
Knights - Ionites erected in the Acropolis medieval castle Order of Saint John.

In the 14th century, the knights built a protective wall around the city, which finally made the city impregnable for enemies. In order to get to the Acropolis, you have to go through the fortress. Narrow stairs without railings are unsafe, especially for children.
Behind centuries of history The Acropolis of Lindos has been destroyed many times by earthquakes and has been reconstructed.

The Acropolis of Lindos overlooks St. Paul's Bay.

According to legend, the Apostle got into a severe storm when he sailed on a ship past the island. Paul offered up a prayer for salvation, a passage opened in the rocks, and the ship was saved. Thus, a beautiful bay appeared. The apostle stayed on the island and began to preach Christianity here. At the place where the Apostle Paul landed on the shore, a chapel was erected.

In Lindos, during the Byzantine Empire, the ancient Christian Church of St. John was built.

At the monastery of the Archangel Michael there is a temple where you can see ancient frescoes and see the service of Byzantine monks. Several Orthodox churches have been preserved in Lindos. One of them is St. Nicholas Orthodox Church of the 13th century, built on the site where there used to be an even more ancient church.

Landmark of Lindos are the "houses of the captains", built in the 16th - 19th centuries and protected by UNESCO.

This is the most colorful quarter of the city, whose houses are made in the same style. Behind the snow-white facades of luxurious villas are patios with beautiful flower beds.

The system of fountains, built back in the time of the Byzantines, has survived to this day.
The sculptors of Lindos were famous throughout Greece. Sculpture of Nike of Samothrace on display at the Louvre, the author of which is the great sculptor Pythocrates.

Therefore, in taverns and restaurants on the roofs of old houses, gardens are arranged and open areas where you can not only have a delicious dinner, but also admire great views on the coast.

In the center of Lindos, in one of the captain's houses, is the Kalypso restaurant, Odos Agiou Pavlou, and in front of it on the roof is the Kyriakos tavern, where you can hear live Greek music almost every evening.

The most famous and popular is the Amphitheater nightclub, which is located 1 kilometer from Lindos on the way to Filiraki.

shopping

In the ancient, one-story Lindos, there are no large shopping centers. Small shops are located in the city center.

It sells: jewelry, wine, olives and ceramics, souvenirs, shells and sponges. But Lindos is famous for its ceramic workshops, and products made in them.

You can see the work of potters in the workshops, which are located next to the ceramics shops. The traditions of ancient Greece have not been interrupted until now. Master potters work using pottery samples found during excavations. Buying such a product is not a cheap pleasure, but what a memory of the trip!

For those who love not chic boutiques, but ordinary markets, a visit to the Lindos market will deliver real pleasure. It is huge, you can buy here whatever your heart desires, and unlike shops, you can bargain here.

Charming Lindos, sprawling around the Acropolis hill with white foam of houses, leaves no one indifferent. Those who came here for the first time come back again and again to see the bays with emerald water, admire the sunsets from the roof of your favorite restaurant or stroll through the narrow streets of the old town. Lindos is a story that has survived to this day, alive, fascinating and always a little mysterious.

Lindos is a true gem of Rhodes.
Even if you came to Rhodes to lie down on the beach and swim in the sea,
it is worth carving out half a day to visit this wonderful place.
You will not see such cities anymore in Rhodes, and I think there are few places left in Greece.
We drove to Lindos from the south of the island after visiting Prasonisi.
To get to Lindos you need to go along the main road along south coast islands and in
the right moment to turn according to the signs. If from the south of the island, there will be a right turn to Pefki
as soon as the road leaves the sea. If you are from the north of the island, turn left just outside the town of Kalathos.
There are many parking lots, you can stop not on the road, but down to St. Paul's Bay.

Lindos is one of the three oldest cities on the island. From three cities (Lindos, Kameiros and Ialliasos)
only Lindos survived as a residential city. We visited Kameiros - only ruins remained of this city.
Lindos was founded in the 10th century BC. The Acropolis of Lindos is considered the second most important in Greece, after the Athenian.

We left the car in the parking lot at St. Paul's Bay. The bay is named after the apostle Paul who visited the city in 43 AD.
This is one of the two bays of Lindos, the second is on the other side of the cliff.
A convenient combination of two closed bays and high cliff made Lindos the center of maritime trade in ancient times.

In the bay the purest water and two rocky beach from different sides.

The Acropolis of Lindos overlooks St. Paul's Bay. The height of the rock is 116 meters.
In ancient Greek times, a temple was built on the rock to the goddess Athena Lindia.
This temple was considered the second most important after the temple of Zeus in Athens, it was visited by Alexander the Great during his
hikes.

To climb to the acropolis, we will pass through the whole city.
Entrance to Lindos.

The remains of an ancient Greek amphitheater are visible on the rock.

The streets are very narrow, any new buildings are prohibited in the city. All buildings are painted white.

On the way to the acropolis there are many souvenir shops.
This shop sells ceramics.

They sell lamps here. The stairs lead up to the restaurant on the roof.

The ascent to the acropolis is quite difficult, but the views are just wonderful

At the foot of the acropolis, a trireme is carved into the rock.

The Acropolis of Lindos reflects the entire history of Lindos from ancient Greek times to the Knights of St. John.
It was originally built on the rock ancient greek temple. Then walls were added to it.
The Romans also noted: in 300 AD, a castle was erected.
After the Romans, the castle was already completed and strengthened by the knights of St. John.

The Acropolis has been restored since the beginning of the 20th century. Archaeologists are still working here.

Purchases

You will see a myriad of shops and shops with souvenirs when approaching the Acropolis, as well as on the narrow streets of the city.

Transport

If you are heading to Lindos from Rhodes, we recommend hiring a car. The road connecting these two cities is very good, so you will get only pleasure from driving. However, in Lindos itself, it is no longer possible to drive by car, since the streets in the city are very narrow and movement on any vehicle it's just not possible here. A bus that brings tourists from other settlements islands, also stops only at main square. Further, the guests of the city go on foot.

But how are passengers and goods transported in Lindos? - you ask. The answer is unexpected - with the help of donkeys. They take tourists to places of interest. For example, to the Acropolis, which is located on a hill and to which many do not want to walk at all. The cost of such a trip is 5 €.

Connection

To contact family and friends who are far from Greece, use mobile communication. Greek mobile operators are among the most developed in Europe. Here they offer a large selection tariff plans so you can easily choose the right one for you. Cost of international calls from mobile phone will be lower than from a stationary one.

You can use Wi-Fi connection when connected to the Internet in many hotels, cafes and restaurants in Lindos.

Safety

As in any Greek resort, in Lindos the overall picture of tourist safety is rated as positive. But do not be too careless and forget about your personal safety. First of all, do not forget about your personal belongings. They should always be with you and under special control in public places.

Do not forget about your health - even with short walks around the city, use sunscreen.

Don't be surprised if when you enter Lindos you see that the road to the city is blocked. Feel free to leave your car in the free parking and get down to the city on foot. You will find that the streets of Lindos are too narrow for maneuvering by car.

We recommend visiting the Acropolis of Lindos either in the early morning or in the late afternoon. At the same time, do not forget to take a bottle of water and a hat with you, because in the ancient city there is simply nowhere to hide from direct sunlight.

Next post for . We continue to open together with Maria Romanova Greek island and a new day gives us a journey to Lindos, Rhodes And interesting story about this amazing city. The beginning of the story

Day seven. 6.08.2014. Lindos. "Madam, relax!"

No more discos: only ballet and ceramics
Masyanya

So, we continue to carry out the planned. And today, according to the schedule, we have a visit to Lindos. It's a town-village on the coast mediterranean sea. It takes an hour (55 km) to go there by regular bus, but due to the fact that he traditionally bows to every stop, collecting people, it turned out more.

At 9-30 we stood at the walls of Lindos.

For prices: excursions to Lindos (naturally without an entrance ticket to the acropolis of 6 EUR and donkey riding 5 EUR, which you pay in any case if you wish) costs 35-40 EUR, moreover, a ticket for scheduled bus all the same 5 EUR one way. Those. for the difference of 25-30 EUR you will be given a story about Lindos plus a trip to 7 springs, which, of course, are interesting, but we decided that for the saved 1200 rubles per person we would do something else, especially since none of us was going to climb the famous tunnel of sinners - zero pleasure, drive too, and no one canceled an attack of claustrophobia.

I do not persuade anyone to travel on their own - here everyone decides for himself to the best of his ability. The students from Yekaterinburg, whom we met on the bus to the Valley of the Butterflies, never went anywhere else - they were sorry to waste time, they were lying on the beach.

View of Lindos from the bus

It’s hard to judge here - everyone has their own vacation: someone comes and doesn’t get out of a hotel with a cool pool, and someone takes a car for a week and only appears in this very hotel at night ...

So Lindos. All tourist buses stop at the parking lot and then you have to go down about three hundred meters (however, there is a special bus - you can ride it by paying 0.50 EUR). And you are at the entrance to Lindos.

We didn’t go, but from the stop we went down after a crowd of Spaniards who came with a tour. And the devil, without knowing the language, pulled to drag them along! While the guide babbled in an incomprehensible language, we examined the snow-white one-story town, narrow streets which was full of souvenir shops.

There are few sights here, of those encountered on the way - a church, where the tourists were not taken, but only waved their hands and told stories. And we went in ... A huge lady sits at the entrance and hisses in a displeased voice: “Madame .... Tra-ta-ta, Monsieur tra-ta-ta ... and tra-ta-ta are incomprehensible phrases, but which become clear from the indignant look and gestures. In general, it is necessary to cover the shoulders and knees - they say, in Holy place come on, madam. A headdress is not required in Greek churches, but who walks in the heat without one? By tradition, skirts are given out at the entrance - they cover both the knees and the shoulders - a kind of cocoon. But not only women, but also men))) I go to church, and there ... men in skirts go and not even in a box. I could hardly contain my laughter - from under the skirts there were crooked hairy legs ...

I can be wrong, but perhaps it was the old Christian church of St. John, built back in the days of the dawn of the Byzantine Empire.

With this overseas excursion, we reached some steps - here all the streets lead to the acropolis ... but where are the famous donkeys ?! I panicked - no smell, no sound, and, in fact, no donkeys. And then a Russian guide descends from the top - she asked her, and the donkeys are below and, they say, we shouldn’t go down at all if we’ve done this way ... O-sli-ki ... I wanted to howl, because Lindos without a donkey is an inferior Lindos ... but downstairs they say to go scary, fast (I quote an eyewitness “the descent is considered more risky than the ascent, since the donkeys are well aware that honestly earned carrots are waiting for them below and rush down much faster”), etc. Well, we will solve problems as they come up ...

We crawled up, what to do ... and there is already a kilometer-long queue at the entrance ... buzzing in all languages, they even heard Russian - an impudent Russian man came up to us to ask something and lined up behind us like our friend and with us! Russian freebie even flourishes abroad.

Along the line, they sell tablecloths of unique beauty, napkins, handmade towels with national ornaments, images of olive branches, etc. Very beautiful and very expensive, but foreigners bought. We stood for 15-20 minutes. In the shade and admiring the views of the city from the top, it was not at all tiring. Taking a ticket, we went through the turnstiles and found ourselves in Ancient Greece ... two steps and you get back a few centuries! A sort of time machine of Greek design.

Acropolis of Lindos

It is strange, but in the reviews they wrote that climbing the ancient steps to the Acropolis is not easy, you need a reserve of strength and lack of fear for this - the stairs are very narrow, and the flow of tourists goes both up and down at the same time. Well, yes, there are no fences, there are rocks and cliffs below, but I wouldn’t say that it was hard to go ... it’s a shame that I wasn’t on a donkey - yes, but not hard.

At the foot of the cliff, a unique bas-relief depicting a warship of the ancient Greeks is carved. 2nd century BC by the way!

There are no analogues in the world.

It is believed that Lindos - beautiful place on Rhodes. This is probably why there are a lot of tourists here ... especially in the acropolis and already in the morning. It would be interesting to hear the history of this place, but I again stood with a tablet and read aloud everything that was written in the guidebook. There were a lot of negative reviews about the work of guides on the route - they say "they will show us where to go and give us time to walk." So this is what we can do...

Indeed, several foreign guides, standing at the hatch below (there is a shadow), told what was where, pointing with their hands, and then the group crawled like ants along the slope. And you can read all the information about each object - with minimal knowledge in English everything is clear there.

Map of the Acropolis, Lindos. Tour guide not needed)

Lindos was one of three city-states founded on Rhodes by the Dorians in the 12th century BC. So, you understand how the island winds along historical milestones - the 5th century BC, the 12th century of our era, a hundred years ago ... and so the whole island - you will step back a few steps and 25 centuries ago you were carried away. Never seen anything like it!

So, it was a prosperous city-state, there was a lively international trade, handicrafts and navigation were actively developing. And what beauty is around ... in the openings of the fortress wall knight's castle, which surrounds the ruins of the ancient Acropolis, snow-white low Lindos is visible.

Lindos is the second largest city and the most famous ancient city on the island of Rhodes (although now considered a village). It is comfortably spread out at the foot of the cliff crowned with the Acropolis, which, by the way, is considered the second largest and most important in Greece, after Athens. And it's really huge! And it also turned out to be ancient.

Here, the world's first code of maritime law was drawn up and ratified by all navigators of the era of antiquity - the famous "Rhodian Code of Navigation", which formed the basis of modern maritime law and is still in force.

Marginal notes.

And on Sunday, the Oslo taxi has a day off! They are said to bask in the shade and rest while eating sweet carrots. They deserved it! Therefore, there are fewer excursions on Sunday, and transport does not run on the island at all on Sunday - this is a day of rest for everyone. Only taxis run around the city these days.

The central temple of the acropolis is the goddess Athena of Lindos (4th century BC). was once just a temple of a female deity, and then the Egyptians came and told about Athena so good, feminine. Without thinking twice, the temple acquired the name of Athena from the ancient Lindians.

There is an ancient theater in the acropolis - the stage and stands are carved into the recess of the rock. Try to repeat the feat of the ancient builders! They knew how to build for centuries, even now come on.

Centuries passed, ionites came there and let's go build a wall around. And they built an impregnable and powerful castle of the Order of St. John.

Together, these ancestors forced UNESCO to celebrate this unusual city How historical monument global importance!

“The pearl of the island is the legendary Lindos, in the fascinating history of which various eras are harmoniously intertwined,” the guide says. Truly a gem and wonder! According to legend, Alexander the Great, Helen of Troy, Hercules visited here.

But the tour is very hot. The shadow is only on the lower platform, at the top - the roasting sun, you literally feel like scrambled eggs in a frying pan! And this is at 10-11 am! Steps of a stone staircase lead up to the acropolis. From a height you can see the famous bay of St. Paul the Apostle - very cozy and somehow eye-catching. And everything that is located below, plus all the same snow-white houses local residents(moreover, in some mystical way, they are built in such a way that the patios are hidden from view).

The “stairway to heaven”, as tourists and guides call it, leads to the temple of Athena, because when you climb it, you see nothing but the sky. There are a lot of steps - they didn’t count, it wasn’t before, it was too hot. The sun doesn’t let you walk there for a long time, which brutally fries even in the morning hours, and how did these ancient people live there?

We slid down the mountain “van bai van”, as the aunt shouted at the entrance, and, saturated with impressions and photo shoots, went on.

Point number 12 “for the first time in my life” ... rode a donkey.

Donkeys, not very happy with their lives, stood at the entrance. It started with the fact that I wanted to talk with one of them - he stood out like a white crow, apparently because he himself was white, unlike his brown-black counterparts. I stroked my ears, talked to him, took a picture ... and then, like in a movie on fast forward, I ended up on the steps, and then on this very donkey.

Neither the donkey, nor the one that led several donkeys down, understood either Russian or English. The tanned Greek was actively typing something on the phone and did not pay any attention to where my donkey was going. And I yelled ... I hadn’t yelled for a long time ... not just from fear, but demanding to turn into the right direction, yelled that he was walking past the road and, in general, stones from under his hooves were already crumbling into a cliff ... and half of the words were English, the rest were in Russian, tried to turn the donkey around - but the donkey, he is a donkey in Africa - try to move him from a place ... a dusty road underfoot, a cliff on the right, hands clung to the saddle, eyes for 2 EUR each (5 kopecks is an irrelevant phrase here))) ... the guide saw my condition, came closer, with a slight movement straightened the saddle that had moved down with me and said with smile ingenious phrase: “Madame, relax!” and turned back to the phone.

You won’t believe it, but somehow I even relaxed, began to look at this amazing beauty around, already paying less attention to the fact that a donkey is walking into the oncoming lane and knocking down a donkey opposite, then one of his legs slides into a precipice and he lazily returns it back.

Relaxing my grip, I began to stroke his long ears with one hand, caught the balance and began to enjoy what was happening. I don’t know if I would advise you to ride and go again myself, but the sensations are unique. Below you is a panting, uncontrollable creature that goes wherever it wants, and goes there, and on the sides is the unique, unforgettable beauty of snow-white Lindos.

Marginal notes.

Interesting to watch the people in the hotel. In ours, for example, there are few Russians - 10-15 people, and they don’t really try to stay in a bunch - a couple of phases for breakfast in the dining room, in the corridor questions like “where were you? well, how is it? Oh, well, we’ll try there too ”... and how chickens gather around the hen in the evenings - hotel guide- she will rent a car to someone, give a tour to someone, show what on the map - she will tell, with whom she will just chat about life and tell interesting things about the Greeks (she has been living there for 15 years, she moved as a teenager, she has been living in Athens all this time).

Moreover, it is surprising that they work seven days a week - the season! They also worked in China or India - there is a season in winter ... when do they have time to live? Here the question arises - why do they need a house? They lived in a hotel, moved there ...

Here, even more surprising - people come here even on weekends! There was a couple from Moscow - they flew in for 4 days ... such a good weekend 🙂 they took a car for all the days and wandered around the island ... beauty! There was also a group of girls who looked like cheerleaders - they were all the same, even the length of their hair - they immediately went to the water park. We called them Americans, they look like ... Five days flickered and evaporated.

Well, so - the Russians go as they arrived - with families, friends - they do not create new companies - 2-3 people are enough. The Spaniards stay in groups, generally come in big noisy families and fill the space of the hall with their
chatter. The Italians have more night life, we get up to sleep, and they are already, having had enough sleep, ready to rush into battle ... moreover, 10 people at once.

The Poles somehow imperceptibly walk in shadows, too, in pairs or threes. There are a lot of elderly couples of Germans - they live more on the beach under an umbrella ... why did they rent the hotel at all? Greek vacationers were not recognized, they say that the most impudent ones are here))

When the first walls of the houses appeared, I exhaled - well, finally, the cliff ended. It wasn't there. The streets there are narrow and a cute donkey hit me against the wall with all its foolishness, then I just began to rest my hand so that he would not finally press me ... I can also be stubborn 🙂

And then the steps began ... and I realized that the cliff was flowers. The donkey, really in anticipation of the carrot, began to pick up speed, and, like on a faulty car, the brakes did not work for him. Steps 15-20 centimeters high, but this is when you go up them, and not when you go down on a donkey, which leans almost perpendicularly when dismounting, and you hang parallel to the ground, seeing a paved street polished by donkeys' hooves, on which you are about to fall from a height donkey. Struggling with the walls (it is useless to fight with a donkey) and clinging to the saddle, I safely reached the donkey camp.

Would you say it wasn't worth it? Yes, it can be a waste of money, but as they say, it's better to do and regret than not to do and regret even more. My heart jumped out of my chest, but I liked it, I didn’t regret for a minute that I sat down.

... And Lindos is mosaic streets, polished to a shine by the feet of visiting tourists, which is why they are a little slippery and shiny, this is a nice donkey taxi, an abundance of various souvenirs, some other air. Yes, only there we found unusual souvenirs - and sets of oils, bags and numerous spices, and coins with the image of donkeys for 2 EUR (we bought the same one with butterflies), and body and face oils, and other cosmetics and hygiene products on olive oil, and many, many more. We also bought a package of half-liter bottles here. cold water, and all of it was drunk here for a walk 🙂

Incredibly hot...

Lindos is recognized as a World Heritage Site, it is forbidden to build modern buildings here, and thank God! How can you spoil such beauty with architectural freaks like high-rise hotels or entertainment clubs?

After walking once more through the streets of the city, we went to the sea. A good asphalt road leads to the beach and now and then rental cars and locals on mopeds and quads pass by. They ran and jumped into the water. The beach here is sandy and already hot in the midday heat. The skin seems to crack in the sun, you can breathe and feel alive only in the water.

Far enough shallow - you go, you go, you go.

Perhaps that is why, in this calm water, children play local badminton tennis - it is not clear what to call it - wooden rectangular rackets and a tennis ball that does not sink in water. Adults have fun throwing the ball in the water - there is no other way to call this action, like volleyball ... moreover, the team is mixed and they understand each other only by gestures. Small children dig in the sand and run around with water pistols, pouring water on their relatives. And as always buzzing in all languages.

And what views! What are the views here! On the one hand, a mountain with southern Greek vegetation, on the other, a panorama of Lindos and the acropolis at the top (you can even see how donkeys drag visitors from the port to the city). Ahead - the sea and the port with a variety of small ships, yachts, sailboats, behind - the beach itself with sunbathers, cafes and small houses of the locals behind the fence. How can you not fall in love with this?

The sandy bottom without stones is an ideal paddling pool for children. However, immediately there are cobblestones that you can get hurt on, but in such clear water everything is seen.

On the way back, having calculated the time to the bus (the schedule was still downloaded and printed at home), we managed to take a walk and cool off under the air conditioners in roadside shops, take a picture of the Kleovul monument at the entrance to Lindos. He was a ruler and one of the seven Greek sages who lived for 70 years (which is a lot for that time).

In the Lindian state, a ruler was chosen every year - a person was invited from among the sages, and if he confirmed his wisdom by deeds, he was left to rule further ... history is silent about what was done with the rulers who did not confirm. All in all, this Cleobulus ruled for forty years. Imagine how wise he was! Trusted...

And he had only one daughter, who was somehow indignant: why do only boys go to school? Apparently he loved his daughter very much, as he immediately opened the first school for girls. The daughter became a famous poetess, and her poems are still taught in Greek schools - so it was not in vain that daddy taught, she glorified his name too.

From what they didn’t see in Lindos, there is an ancient system of fountains from Byzantine times, which has survived to this day, and a colorful quarter of luxurious villas for sea captains (the guide says that “all the buildings in it are made in the same style, and behind the whitewashed facades hide cozy patios that are simply immersed in flowers"). They didn’t get there - they didn’t have enough strength.

The day went wonderfully. By bus at 15-30 we sped off to Rhodes. We walked around the city, had dinner and happy and satisfied, with a bunch of purchases, photos and impressions arrived at the hotel.
